Reports: Blazers talking to Roger Mason
Jason Quick tweets: Blazers having "ongoing conversations" with free agent guard Roger Mason according to agent Mark Bartelstein. "We've talked quite a bit."
Update: Ken Berger from CBS Sports posted this last night as well...
-------------------------------
The Blazers, Knicks, Bulls and Clippers have expressed interest in Spurs free-agent guard Roger Mason, while the Jazz, Nuggets, Bobcats, Knicks and Heat are pursuing Suns free-agent forward Louis Amundson, sources say.

At the end of the article, it also said the Blazers have shown interest in Louis Admunson.
He’s the kind of guy I hate… when he’s on the other team. Wouldn’t mind having him around on our team though, floppy hair and all.
"[S]ince men enjoyed very great leisure, they used it to pursue many kinds of commodities unknown to their fathers, and that was that first yoke they placed upon themselves without thinking about it, and the first source of evils the prepared for their descendants. For, besides continuing thus to soften body and mind, as these commodities had lost almost all their pleasantness through habit, and as they had at the same time degenerated into true needs, being deprived of them became much more cruel than possessing them was sweet; and people were unhappy to lose them without being happy to have them." -Jean-Jacques Rousseau

If Louis Admunson comes here then maybe N.O. is backing off including Okafor in a deal.
I’m hanging on by a thread, hoping to get any news that might lead us to Chris Paul.
Amundson is awesome
He’s exactly the type of scrappy energy guy you want on the bench. My only worry is that he’d suffer offensively if he played on a slower-paced 2nd-unit that didn’t offer him the chance at put-backs or lobs.
Mason? Really?
Hurry up and hire a GM already so we have someone to blame this on.
Treat people well because Karma can hit you at any second.
If Portland guts it's roster to land Chris Paul
these are exactly the type of players Portland should be looking for. Portland would hopefully get a trade exception in the Paul deal and only have that trade exception, the MLE and the BAE to restock the roster.
"guts their roster"
Batum + Bayless + Scraps is not gutting the team
hahaha

Roger Mason's "history" doesn't sound very
impressive at ALL. Esp for the Blazers…doesn’t get to the rim, is not good at defense…ewwwwww
Roger mason?
Seriously? The Spurs aren’t going to keep him….why would the Blazers go after him?
Go to Heaven for the climate, Hell for the company.
Can someone tell our FO to look deeper into free agency and be a little bit less one dimensional?
Raja Bell. Raja Bell. Raja Bell. Raja Bell. Raja Bell. Raja Bell. Raja Bell. Raja Bell. Raja Bell. Raja Bell.
Geez.
Being a Blazer fan is not exactly healthy.
Why are the Blazers targeting players that will be stuck on the bench and not addressing the biggest need being PG and shooting.
Roger Mason is really athlectic but can’t shoot…why sign him…..why even talk to him…it’s makes no sense. It’s real clear that Cleveland is going to trade PG Mo Williams no matter what happens to the King….He’s a major upgrade over Andre Miller and a much better fit for this Blazers team.
This team needs a GM in a hurry. I would have loved for Danny Ferry to come here but he thinks that he can find a better job than Portland….good luck with that one!!
Whoever is making decisions as far as personel needs to go and work for “mr kahn over in minnesota, because they are making moves that he would make”
P.S……..that is not a compliment!
Kenneth Lewis Moore
really? mo williams is major upgrade over andre?
did you watch the playoffs

I second this thought
Mo Williams appears to be a good player next to Lebron, but what scoring point wouldn’t?

well...
Anyone ever consider the team is looking for an end of game knockdown shooter to replace Travis Outlaw? I mean Mason is a great spot up shooter, especially from 3pt range, as well as the fact that he’s won how many games for the Spurs in the past?
roger mason
can shoot. his d and bbiq i dunno about but ive seen him bury many threes, some to decide the game.

i see a big trade coming

I'd be upset if the Blazers didn't talk to 5 guys before signing one
But you also can’t expect the team to hold onto a billion developmental prospects with the need to make the next step.
I guess if Portland just plans on targeting other teams' table scraps
I’d rather just see the roster kept as it is and cross my fingers that it can stay healthy next season.

Yeah
What gives? Where’s all the free agents people swore we could get? You know, ALL the free agents that are supposedly better than Hedo Turk. Remember? The ones that were supposedly cheaper, and on their way to signing as soon as F/A started. What happened to Mike Miller? Josh Childress? What? They’re not coming. Why? Oh that’s right. Cuz, it’s Portland, freakin Oregon.
well
mike miller wants more than the mle

they couldn't sign him after signing Blakey, wasn't that it?

because they gave miller a deadline
and miller didnt sign, so they went with blake

I am still pissed that we missed out on Hedo
but not as upset as the Raptors, who are pissed that they ended up with him.
I don't know why nearly everyone in here is borderline offended that we are talking to Mason
There are a limited number of things Portland can do to bring in FA.
We have the mid level exception and the biannual exception. So far, this has been a player’s market. Everyone is getting inflated deals and it’s driving the prices up beyond our ability to snag ‘em. Additionally, Paul Allen might not want to use the full mid level because that likely means we’ll be over the luxury tax at the end of the season. Unless we’re certain the guy we’re adding is crucial for the team’s success then there’s no point.
Mason is the sort of guy we can target and fills a need even though he’s 1 dimensional. I’m not saying he’s good, I’m saying he’s available for the right price and can shoot the three which is something the team is after right now. We aren’t going to be bringing in a fantastic free agent.

As for the Blazers...They are officially the NBA equivalent of a movie serial killer

He has cool hair.
Maybe that’s the thinking—we need cool hair on the squad now that Brandon got rid of his fresh 80’s stripes, and Marty—and his Kid’N’Play mini ’fro—are out the door.

For all of the hype surrounding this year's FAs,
the crop is a tad thin at 2 once you get past Wade and not exciting at all at PG.
The Blazers would do well to look for the big PG trade but avoid Spurs castaways.

I think the real question here
Is, theoretically, what price would you pay for Roger Mason?
For example, I would be pretty happy to get him for the BAE. But if we used the MLE on him, that would straight up stink.
You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.
he earned 4.9 mil last year
and he’s going to be 30 in Sept

Mason's shooting percentage really dropped off the table last year
unless he had an injury that affected his shot, I’d stay away

apparently he was playing with a bad hand or wrist
can’t remember which

that makes sense
usually guys won’t suddenly lose their shooting eye at age 29 for no reason
so Mason and Raja Bell are in the same category, they’ve both got something to prove
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
This one makes sense.
It’s not surprising SGs like Wesley Matthews and Mason are in discussions, because Fernandez wants out.
That Farmar is being talked about is really odd.
I’m going to go out on a limb and predict the Blazers are going to trade Andre Miller and Batum for Gerald Wallace and picks. (this seems to be a little too favorable for the Bobcats, so maybe they throw in Gerald Henderson or Alexis Ajinca)
Rudy is a good fit for Charlotte, too. Brown loves off-the-ball screen action, and Charlotte lacks firepower, so here is where Rudy can be involved and feel appreciated.
I see Farmar replacing Andre Miller.
The only position the Blazers can really improve significantly is at the 3. And it struck me as really fishy that Batum wasn’t traded for the #4. I know Batum is great, but I think the Blazers may already have arranged something. If not Wallace in Charlotte, then it could be Granger in Indiana. Both teams are desperate for point guards and would be a great fit for Andre Miller.
"I've hacked into your brain. You're throwing a party and no one's showing up."
I rather have Batum then Wallace.
The guy can’t shoot. Plays defense very well though.

Nothing wrong with Mason....
Roger Mason, in my opinion would be a great piece for Portland. No, he’s not a 90’s Ray Allen by any means, but he’s a competent 3-ball shooter, when he’s hot — he’s hot. There would be many games where he would be an X-Factor.
Like I said, he’s a piece, he’s not the whole puzzle. I could see him battling for the 2nd string 2-spot with Rudy, assuming that Portland doesn’t trade him. We need shooters, Mason, yes he’s not going to get you 20 ppg, however, I think he really could benefit Portland.
I will agree with others, that we should continue to search for other options. But if the price is right, which it should be, Mason should be wearing the #8 jersey as a Portland Trail Blazer IMO.
Mason really struggled with his shot last year
compared to his previous seasons. I’m not sure why that was, but if the Spurs don’t want to resign him that is an automatic red flag, for me
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
Yeah, Roger Mason, Jr. had problems with his shot last season. Mason, Jr., however, has vastly ...
superior handles to Rudy Fernandez — which isn’t a shock — and is a good passer for a guy with true two guard size. He’s an adequate defender, too. At the BAE, the team could do much worse than Mason, Jr. Of course, Fernandez would have to be dealt in that instance and, well, either Elliot Williams or Jerryd Bayless would also be squeezed out of the rotation.
I don't see Elliott Williams being in the rotation of a contending team, his year
he’s going to be an emergency fill-in and a garbage-time player, like Patty Mills was last year
Bayless and Mason could hypothetically play alongside each other as reserves, but I’d prefer the Blazers acquire Bell or Matthews before Mason, because of Roger’s shooting concerns. If the Spurs don’t choose to resign someone who is only 30 and was in their starting lineup 2 years ago, that should send up a flare to the other NBA GMs.
San Antonio usually collects this kind of players instead of discarding them (unless they’re on the downside of their careers, like Ime Udoka, etc) and did you notice that the Spurs are also interested in signing Matthews to replace Mason? All the more reason to prefer Wesley
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
the team has enough handles
they need to replace/improve upon Webster, Blake and Outlaw’s outside shooting
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
enough handles?
one thing we’ve seriously lacked the last few seasons is ANY 2 or 3 outside of Roy being able to take it to the basket. Batum should get better, but isn’t there yet. Webs was terrible off the dribble, and Rudy worse. Not counting rookies who won’t sniff the rotation, we have exactly 3 players who can drive – Miller, Roy, and Bayless. Adding a rotation 2/3 who can actually handle and create would be a good move IMHO

-Dave, 2/5/2010: http://www.blazersedge.com/2010/2/5/1297509/no-amore-for-amare
3 is enough, and Nic will make 4
there’s only 1 ball, and any additional extra penetrators will have no craks in the defense to exploit if the floor isn’t spread
and they just drafted a couple of rookie guards who could make it 5-6, in a year or so
I agree with Nate on this one. Babbitt is a rookie, they need a veteran wing who is a sniper and can defend the perimeter
