I know a lot of fans are currently down on Rudy, and if you believe everything you read in the foreign media (who have their own motives for posting what they do) then your feelings may be justified. I just wanted to write a post in support of Rudy, he is a great player. Maybe not to the level that some people expected him to be at when he came over, but easily in the top 200 NBA players, according to Hollinger’s PER he was 192 last season, with 30 NBA that make his a 6th maybe 7th man on any team in the league and I would argue that his injuries last season held him back some and he will be an even better player next season.
My one wish is that Nate would be fired, but that’s not going to happen. So I guess I will just have to wonder, why can Rudy not be our “PG” of the future? I think Rudy Is the perfect player to compliment Roy’s game. Some people will say that at the end of the game they will be pressed and Rudy won’t be able to get the ball up court. But if a combination of Rudy, Roy and Batum can’t beat an NBA press then this team has much bigger issues then the PG of the future. Rudy might not be the best defensive player but Rudy, Roy and Batum could once again match up with almost every NBA team on the defensive end. Let’s look at the Northwest division rivals and see how we match up. Denver (billups, affalo, melo) Minnesota (Flynn or ridnour, brewer, Webster or Johnson) OKC (Westbrook, harden, Durant) Utah (Williams, miles, kirilenko?) The only team I see giving Portland a probably would Utah just because kirilenko is too long for Rudy or Roy and Batum would probably be on Williams. On the offensive end I would give the Portland team an advantage over all of these teams.
Another thing to look at is the Oden factor. If Oden is healthy Rudy will get many more open look, a healthy Oden should change how teams play defense against Portland, it will be hard to double Roy and leave either batum, Rudy, la or oden wide open. (This is why Miller is not a long term option, he is dangerous outside of 4 ft and he’s old) I’m not saying Rudy should be the starting PG for 2010-2011; Miller should and most likely will be the starting PG this year. But I think Rudy should be given some of the PG minutes with the starting unit and see how it works. And hopefully if it does work Nate won’t be Nate and just stop doing it. Then at the trade deadline or 2011-2012 or the 11-12 deadline depending on what happens with miller Rudy would be ready to take the reins. (Yes I am not a big Bayless fan)
Now is time to let the hate commence, I’m sure a lot of you will tell me how much of drama queen Rudy is and he needs to be traded for garbage. But I for one support Rudy as a PTB for as long as he is in the NBA and hope he isn’t traded for garbage. I also feel like Paul Allen loves guards and international fans and won’t just give up on Rudy like so many of you have. Viva La Rudy Revolucion
