Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Let's continue with the congratulations this morning. Dwight Jaynes writes...
-----------------------
I don’t really even know where to start in thanking everyone who has helped me along the way. I’m the luckiest guy I know — my job(s) have afforded me the opportunity to go so many places I didn’t think I’d ever go. And now I’m headed into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame, where only three sports writers reside. All three of those giants, George Pasero, Don McLeod and L.H. Gregory have passed away and I am humbled to be in their company.
-----------------------

Jaynes has covered the Portland Trail Blazers for decades and wrote two Blazers books in the early 1990s: The Long, Hot Winter with Rick Adelman and Against The World with Kerry Eggers.

Terry Porter, a major player in both books, is entering the Hall this year as well. He joins former teammates Clyde Drexler, Jerome Kersey and Danny Ainge.

CIP helped put him into the HOF

By that I mean that the voters listened to 1 MSP show and Chad in Portland doing his usual nonsense. That would have gotten my vote, well that and all he has done over the years. But working with people who are hard to work with is the icing on the cake.

That show has improved immensely since Gavin moved to Dallas TX.

Not so sure...

I think Dwight adds a ton and I think it’s better b/c of that. CIP is a buffoon, however.

by pdxrob on Jul 27, 2010 10:12 AM PDT up reply actions

I like Dwight and 'Tone

If I remember right, ’Tone took the place of Gavin. So I would have to say that it was him that made the show better.

by Greg Lenny on Jul 27, 2010 10:13 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah. CIP was just awful next to Gavin.

He’s kind of like the entertaining dumb kid in the class now. You just feel sorry for him as you laugh, as he tries to step his game up next to Tone and Dwight who are pretty good.

I'm happy for DJ

but at the same time, I am annoyed by 955 the game, promoting a “big announcement” for over a week, and this is what we get. Sure it is a big deal, but I was none the less, underwhelmed.

by usmcr3049 on Jul 27, 2010 10:01 AM PDT reply actions

Yeah the announcements get worse

Programming announcements are usually a waste of time, HUGE 955 the game announcements are even more of a waste. Now I am pretty sure the “drama” presented by Quick is nothing major, probably something expected like Rudy wanting to be traded still.

PDXBuckeye had the best post about the “drama”. Greg Oden wants to run the point, since Chris Paul probably will not for Portland. Don’t need the lateral movement if you can just plow through to the bucket. And you can’t get 6 fouls on 1 drive, 5 max unless you foul a teammate.

by Greg Lenny on Jul 27, 2010 10:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Wow, very well deserved

DJ is pretty much the The Woodward and Bernstein of reporting. I don’t know why it wasn’t done sooner.

Something about this sentence sounds premature...

It isn't actually. Jaynes is a vampire.

He sucks positive energy from stories and uses it to live forever.

A media vampire.

Scary.

I know less than half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Banning "chat speak" is like banning apostrophes. There would be no "you're" if some punk kid in the 1700s hadn't been a rebel.

by haildablazer on Jul 27, 2010 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Ugh. If Jaynes goes in can Charles Barkley go in too. Charles is more deserving...

I am not sure what Dwight did to deserve this. I read his work for 15 years (till 2002) and have found few writers more self serving and manipulative. Wojo is one of the few I like less than DJ.
If he stops writing this award will be worth it.

Not following

Why would Charles Barkley get into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame?

by Derek @Portland Men on Sports on Jul 27, 2010 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

No reason for either of them to be there. You were following and didn't even know it. *evil laugh*

He is a tabloid style news writer that covered Oregon sports. He covered NW sports from the same angle that is popular today. You see it all the time in FanShots and among very famous sports writers.

Recipe for success:
Take an unpopular stance on an emotionally heated topic and… VOILA. Every one is talking about your article.

I have a few other recipes to get tons of clicks/views if you are interested in becoming a hack too:
- Picture of scantily clad pretty women in a sport that has little to nothing to do with them
- Make an icon look bad by exaggerating a flaw/mistake (LeBron)
- Have an infuriating/misleading title for an article
- Over-cover negative news
- Center an article on opinion and state it as a fact

I have been guilty of these tactics in articles I write too but I am a personality and write for entertainment and my audience expects this from the sites I do this on. I am not a news person. I consider sports to be my holy ground thus my DJ opinion.

I first worked Spokane and then in Portland news media a long while back. You know a hack when you read one. However I moved away before I ever heard him on the radio where this is much more acceptable.

Love him or hate him (i personally love him)

Dwight Jaynes has experienced and reported upon decades worth of Oregon sports making him a walking encyclopedia when it comes to this stuff.

There’s something to be said for a reporter who has their finger on the pulse of the particular sports region he/she is writing about. For me as a reader – this is an indispensable quality. Jaynes has this.

Congratulations to Dwight. I’m certain that his family is very proud.

Longevity should not be confused with ability

Props, I guess, to Dwight for managing to stick in the industry for so long. But old boy is a slimy example of a bottom feeding writer, with the appearance and character of a sturgeon.

James, Wade, and Bosh = the Nazgul. Once they were great kings, until their greed got the best of them in their lust for the ring.

Come now. That's completely unfair to sturgeons.

congratulations Dwight. Despite all the venom on this page, I think Dwight is a very good writer / reporter.

I don’t understand all the Dwight Jaynes hate in here.

He has been pretty right on about most things blazers. He called out Nate for his predictable offense looooong before any other of the talking heads. He predicted the impending Rudy drama when Rudy was still a prince of the city and everyone called him crazy for it. He discovered “Hat Guy,” who NO ONE knew anything about until he scooped the story. That was some pretty darned good reporting. Yes he still gets no love from some people on here.

What? Would you all rather read Canzano’s poison pieces, or Jason “I grasp at Trailblazer news straws every week, please, oh please, sports news gods, let me break just one story. Let me be right about just one thing this year” Quick?

well, I think most people have gone to extremes in this comment section.

Dwight has done very good work for a long period of time. Yes, sometimes he’s a jackass and a tool. But mostly he’s just fine, thank you. And his longevity in this market makes him a HOF member IMO.

I enjoy Canzano more on the radio than I do in the Oregonian. Same with Quick. I guess tone of voice makes a difference in their work, for me. – Elgin

Danny Ainge and Dwight Jaynes… man, can I get in for playing kickball with gradeschoolers?

by sagcat on Jul 27, 2010 1:57 PM PDT reply actions

Dwight Jaynes

is the Oregon Sports version of Andy Rooney. A grouchy, senile old man spinning stale, ancient observations into endless lectures about what he doesn’t understand. Someone up thread referred to him as a walking encyclopedia. The problem with an 80’s era encyclopedia is that it’s full of nothing but 25-year old facts. He ignores, or is disdainful of, any story, personality, or sport he doesn’t know anything about. The intellectual curiosity of the man is zero.

Dwight's writing is fine but...

But his hosting of MSP and Talkin’ Ball are terrible. Of course if CIP was off the show I’m sure it’d be better.

Nothing annoyed me more than waiting for several days to hear this, waking up sick JUST to hear it at 7:30, and then just have it be about Jaynes. Lame.
