Junk Out Of Time Drawer - 7/25/2010
Today is the Day Out Of Time. Junk?
So today is the Day Out Of Time for a 13-moon calendar. It's the day that doesn't fit in the calendar so they advocate partying it up one this day that is out of time. Or as they say...
13 Moons x 28 days = 364 days. The 365th day of the year is called the Day Out of Time, a day to celebrate peace through culture, time is art and practice universal forgiveness so that everyone can start the next year fresh!
It also marks the beginning of a new year.

So. Junk well and prosper. I need to go recover from doing something dumb yesterday.

Internet is full of disturbing things like that.
I once saw a midget playing a German Artillery Inspector with a Clydesdale.
True
As to the proposition about a day out of time, here is an interesting thought. If we ever colonize Mars, we would have to deal with an extra 39 minutes each and every day (typically slotted after midnite and before 12:01am).
So the question to you is…which would you enjoy more, an entire day of anarchy, once a year….or 39 minutes of anarchy every day (night)?

That's a great question.
But I think that I would take 39 minutes of anarchy every night. 39minutes is just nearly enough time to do anything once, and you’d have lots of time to practice. A big problem with holidays is that trying to fit all that into one day is going to make it harder for it to live up to the expectations that build all year. But it being everyday, you’d just have so many opportunities that it could be a great habit to get into.
Yeah...that was what I was thinking

so like I'm confused
imagine that… so why would the 25th of July be this “out of time” extra day? I’m not finding it those links, but I’m not looking very hard either. My understanding was the leap year accounts for the additional day every fourth year that’s added to “counter-balance” earth’s 364.25 day solar orbit. But Leap day is like February 29th I think. I think there’s something druidic about this concept so I can live with it, and I grant an additional pass for outstanding secret message.

Hi. I thought I’d let you know that after both squads yesterday in my tournament I’m in third place. Today is match play so we bowl 2 games against someone and high total from that match advances on in the tournament. It is double elimination. I will win. I will win. I will win. I will pretty much be at milwaukie bowl all day so somebody should come cheer me on. I totally expect Medmelon, Fanfaraway, amlmart, and tominhawaii to show up.
Also it is mi padre’s birthday :)

Not enough.
Although your crush on Carrie Mulligan is definitely worth noting on the spreadsheet in my brain.
Your selflessness exceeds even LeBron James'.
And is only outperformed by your beauty which is only outperformed by your wit.
And you're humble, too!
But, yes, LeBron James isn’t so much a milestone to be conquered as a goal to always strive for. I frequently go through life and think about the choices I’m about to make and say to myself “What Would Lebron Do?”
hahahaha
i must be incredibly conceited, but I’ve never had a role model, or anyone in who’s conduct I inspire mine, at least not consciously, except perhaps my parents, but not often, because we have such different mindsets.
However, you motto seems like an excellent one, so from now on, before I act, I will ask myself WWLD, and then act accordingly.
It's probably that it isn't common to have a role model in Spain
as far as I know, it’s a US thing, so i’ve never actually thought about it. But it’s a silly premise, because everyone is flawed, so why strive to be like someone flawed? Why not just take the best from each person and strive for that?
In this TV production, what will I have to decide about?
Mhm, I think having role models is a fairly universal concept
Talking about who they are in your college essays is a US thing ;)
yes that makes sense I guess
because there are many people I admire, which is what role models are ( i think)-
I’ve never heard a non-us person list their role-models, they’re very conscious of it. All the talk about Miley not being a good role model and things like that. I never looked up to a pop singer growing up.
As usual, you're right on it.
I can’t even handle supposed appeals from authority figures because I don’t trust that some one else could possibly know anything for real. Also, I find that I internalize more selfjudgment and that all the motivation I could need is by treating the ideal I have already internalized as my only role model. That, plus impressing key people I can’t help but want to like me. :)
I’m not sure yet what this decision will be about but it needs these elements:
1) We have to overhype everything about the decision for weeks leading up to it.
2) The decision has to include you choosing something easy over something that’s fully been invested in you for years.
3) When you choose the easy thing, the thing you are choosing it over should become bitter and devastated and never be able to survive without you.

We saw him while we were eating at the Blue Bayou restaurant inside Disneyland (that is the restaurant that can be seen while you are riding Pirates Of the Caribbean). That place is spendy so he obviously wasn’t pretending not to be rich …however we heard lots of crickets chirping..so maybe he had his bug collection …or maybe it was just the “taped” crickets from the ride.

In 17 years of living in Southern California
the one place I interacted with celebrities most was at Disneyland.
Had a nice conversation with “Rerun” from What’s Happening while standing in line for Captain Eo.
Quick conversation with Jim Belushi while walking around in California Adventure.
Saw Elliot Gould walking in Tomorrowland with a couple of guys that looked like they worked for Secret Service – sunglasses, communication earpieces, etc. So I just gave him a nod of the head, as if to say, “I know you’re famous but I won’t bother you.” He gave me a half smile and a nod back.

Too bad the slogan came too late to save the Microsoft Kin, which depending on who you believe sold as little as 503 devices or as many as 9000 before getting canned after just a few weeks.

I agree
And part of why the book is better is Nicholson…..not because he wasn’t good in the movie….but because you take one look at Nicholson and you know he is gonna go crazy (dude looks crazy when he is just walking around….and because he likes the Lakers you suspect that he actually is insane) …which loses some of the oomph that was achieved in the novel. Plus there was a few other things that Kubric did that were head scratchers that I won’t get into here.
By the way…if I were to suggest any SK novels for the book club…I would definitely include The Shining..along with ..hmmm….The Dead Zone, and maybe Salem’s Lot. (I would probably avoid assigning The Stand even though it is my personal favorite …it is just too long).

Rick Reilly is an idiot. The goal of the running with the bulls in Pamplona is not to hit a bull with the rolled up newspaper.
http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=5407245&categoryid=2378529
Whoever told him that didn’t understand it – if he asked someone and didn’t deduct that from his own observations. The newspaper is the last line of “defense” as much as that is possible with a bull charging you. And you generally don’t try to hit the bull on the head with it (they wouldn’t care), you throw the paper away from you and into it’s line of vision to distract it, like a matador with his cape.
And the ultimate “goal” besides not getting trampled over is to reach the arena ahead of the bulls, instead of having to jump to the side into safety.
Exactly
I ran 3 times during the time I was at San Fermin… it was pretty rad.
You don’t hit a bull with a newspaper for any real reason, if people are doing that. Rick Reilly was a joke before saying a silly thing like that, but it’s just dumb.

This strikes me as funny

Police in Dunwoody, Ga., are looking for a man who robbed a Cheesecake Factory restaurant while dressed like a Cheesecake Factory chef. Investigators released a sketch of the suspect, who pulled a gun on the eatery’s manager on May 4 and escaped with an undisclosed amount of money. (Dunwoody Police Dept)

It's new
They are in the shopping center that is really close to our house and the only place with breakfast besides McDonald’s. It’s called Jack’s Place and everyone in there was Asian. The food came out really really fast.
One sad thing is that they are know for their biscuits but they don’t have biscuits and gravy.
I took a photo because of the spelling of the last item.
I know that area, but never really explored there.

I got a teriyaki chicken and a thai beef. The thai beef was incredibly tasty, nice juicy beef and the sauce was supreme. My girlfriend got the Yokohama Mama sandwich and really loved it. Pretty sure I saw Appel there, but before I had a chance to chase him down and say hi he was gone. We also bought some super yummy, fresh fruit. Y’all should check out kebabama, it’s worth it!

NFL’ers Antonio Gates, Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens vs retired NBA’ers Kenny Smith, Rick Fox and Hakeem Olajuwon.

Apparently it’s back to the normal format next week. They’re making a very questionable decision, but maybe good for ratings: Their main NFL “pro” is Michael Vick.

Worst broadcast idea since CopRock:
Bosh said he plans to move forward with documentary plans from the video he shot during his free-agent recruitment. “The documentary is coming along great,” he told ESPN. “I filmed a lot of footage. I have over 80 hours of footage taped, and I’m just trying to find out a direction and style that I want to incorporate. I might make it into an hour special.” Or even more. “Well, it could be a two-hour special. It might be a mini-series,” he said. “It will have a 24/7 feel. . . . I’ve been studying a lot and seeing what’s the best avenue to take it in.”
Wade and LeBron were also accompanied by camera teams for much of their trips
There definitely is some kind of documentary coming out of this
I still can't figure out why people did watch the ESPN thing.
It wasn’t history in the making, it was simply a testament to LBJ’s giant ego. It’s not like the world wouldn’t know 5 minutes after he announced it anyway.
Useless name drop of the day: I saw Brian Scalabrine
He’s not as tall as I remembered him from back in January. Maybe a good head taller than me, but not taller than e.g. Batum though Nic just looks much more lanky with his long limbs. He was accompanied by a carribbean-looking woman who was maybe 5-10.
Also saw a white guy in a Rondo shirt with a Boston skyline tattoo on his arm. That’s way worse than a pinwheel in terms of recognition and coolness-factor ;-)

random question
do you guys think that Brandon Roy is ready to give his team up?
would Brandon be ok taking the back seat?
don’t get me wrong, Brandon could be the most humble man in basketball..
but to be replaced as our franchises face?
Would he rather play this out and be the man?
Great questions
I would hope he’d be willing to share the spotlight with someone like Chris Paul. I don’t think he’d have to give up the spotlight completely (just as Pierce didn’t have to give it up 3 years ago).
I don’t think, however, there’s any way of knowing for sure ahead of time. I think his character is such that he’s a much more likely candidate than others in the NBA….
agreed
But this is undoubtedly Roy’s team as Jordan, Magic, and Bird said I wanted to beat them, not join them
Like Derrick Rose ;-)
Who reportedly was not at all happy about the idea of Wade or LeBron joining him and more or less actively refused to go recruit for the Bulls. And now he got Boozer, which is still an improvement but not that easy to win.
I suppose Roy would accept it and not worry much about being the 1a or the 1b, though the most unselfish star player to accept Paul with open arms would probably be Dirk (see interview linked above). Howard also seems like a guy who would be able to co-exist well with Paul, especially since he knows Paul would make him twice as valuable on offense.
But
Does Dirk seem that attractive to Paul at this point? Paul, from what i hear is doing this based on a Lebron suggestion.. Lebron also suggested he goes to the west. Is this a play to get a Lakers, Bulls setup? Give Lebron his years of rivalry such as Magic and Jordan?
what do you mean give his team up?
do you mean concede leadership? i think last year brandon showed a lot of growth on this front. i recall an article that said he was taking less of a role in terms of leadership since there was so many vets who were outspoken. after awhile the vets told him to start taking charge and reiterated that it was his team. so he did. if the right person came in…i could see brandon sharing or giving up alpha dog status…but for the 99% of players that we will get on this team…i dont see him doing that.

Yep. It really depends on his recovery.
He’s got a long Summer ahead of him if he wants to show up ready.
According to the Times-Picayune (New Orleans' version of the Oregonian), Paul will formally request a trade tomorrow
A source close to the Paul said all of the possible free agents this summer that he thought could have helped the Hornets win this upcoming season have signed with other teams. Last week, Weber said they have no plans to take on any more additional debt until the ownership transfer involving George Shinn selling his majority share to Gary Chouest is completed, but the possibility of improving the roster through trades is imminent.

For a team like the Hornets w/o Chris Paul, he is a perfect piece. Potentially a franchise player, with no risk attached.
I think it's risky for them
They gotta decide to sign him after 1 season and all that— money they don’t wanna spend. They can’t absorb that sort of risk like we can, or Dallas could, or some other rich team.
Just the idea that they’d wanna sign a fully healthy Oden for what he’d be worth sounds questionable to me. They can’t afford that right now.
#52
I’m just saying they get a year trial. If it doesn’t work out, they can let him walk in RFA, and they still get say Bayless/Rudy/whatever (which is almost as good as anything Dallas can give). If he does well, they match his RFA offer and he’s a great asset (unless next year he does well, but then he becomes really injury prone).
I'm borderline giddy
and while I love Nic Batum’s game, anyone who is hesitant to do a deal where the best basketball player we send back for Chirs Paul, future hall of fame PG, is a solid SF with nice upside is not someone I agree with when it comes to armchair GM’ing

an expensive one.
While I’d love for us to trade him in a deal for CP3, I highly doubt we can get him back. He’s going to get better in the next couple years and I expect he’ll have a pretty big price on his shoulders.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
Yeah me too
I think his and Rudy’s value will go up with the world championships, but there is nothing better out there than CP3 to trade them for anyway. Even Iguodala would be great but is a way harder fit next to Roy, while CP3 is the long-range shooter and driver and passer everybody always requests. I really like Nic, but he is far from a proven thing. He’s a more efficient Rudy Gay who plays less.
Is anyone here going to be disappointed if we don't get CP3?
I mean all this speculation is fun and everything… but I remain incredibly skeptical that he actually gets moved

I won't be disappointed
I’m probably just as skeptical as you. I guess I’d be a little disappointed if he does move but to a different team and for similar pieces to which we could move. But to me it’s more of a “oh my god what a miracle we got him” then a “man I’m so sure we’re gonna get him and I can’t wait”
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
I would be disappointed if he went to Orlando for less than we could’ve reasonably offered. If it’s b/c our mgmt didn’t have courage to stump up a good offer, or it’s because NO chickened out and let CP dictate the trade terms, either way it would be sad.
yeah, I agree with that especially if he ends up in Dallas for spare change… Orlando is at least in the Eastern Conference

I kind of got a little worried about what would happen if we do get Paul
and he leaves us in two years after reading Dave’s post.
Of course, I would still be stoked if we do get him.
It depends on what we give up
As much as teams want Paul, I think most teams are leery about the prospect of maybe 1.5 seasons then he bolts. It’ll hurt his value, no matter how good he is. You don’t want to gut your team, then lose that player shortly afterward.
It’s not unlike how great baseball players (Like Cliff Lee) are often traded for prospects at the trade deadline, because teams can’t guarantee he’ll re-sign. It’s just a slightly longer time frame, and a better set of players in return.
The (I believe) discredited trade was Rudy, Andre, Joel, Batum, Greg, Freeland, and a first for Paul and Okafor.
yeah, not that one.
I wouldn’t do that. But what was the very first one we heard? The one without Gregory.
For some reason, I swear it was just Rudy, Andre, Joel, and filler.
Which is why everyone freaked out, because we’d keep Nic and Greg. You may want to go look it up though, if possible. I’m not sure.
I could see teams lowballing the Hornets with offers until the deadline, and then get really serious
I would like for the Blazers to get really serious now, and if the Hornets don’t bit then at least they tried everything.
That Paul could bolt is part of what makes him movable now at all. Just as well the Blazers could get him into extending ahead of time once he sees where this is going. And unlike Dave I don’t believe in a lockout.
It's July 9th, 3 years after he signed his last one
So we would be totally fine with a one-week lockout, after which the first 300 players would run out of money and tell their agents and representatives to accept.
That sounds like you don't expect her to make it
Stay positive, and believe in CP3 signing his extension with the Blazers on her 55th birthday!

when people say that we need to hold on to Batum or whatever because Paul for two years isn’t worth [insert prospect here], you have to remember that if there wasn’t a threat he could bolt, the guy would be totally untradeable. it’s tough using the highest quality ingredients and providing good portions at a price people are used to, especially since the market I’m at doesn’t give me the best profit. Came up with St Augistine “that was the name of his boat”seafood sauce and made enough money to sell the boat and retire,I would buy your sauce
by southern oregon on Jul 25, 2010 5:03 PM PDT up reply actions
What I've got to figure out is how to make enough money to start bottling it.
The whole process takes quite a bit of money, not to mention trying to get the name out there. There are so many people who try and do it but they end up with their sauces gathering dust on the bottom shelf of some store and end up losing everything just because nobody knows what it is. I started this so people could try my sauces and I would have a reputation before I tried to market it. I just think that the market I picked won’t get me noticed enough. Got to stay positive though, and I’m glad you liked the Teriyaki. One thing about it too is it’s gluten free which can’t be said for 99% of the Teriyaki sauces out on the market. I’m sure you will all hear about whatever happens with this whole thing, and thanks for giving me a try!

ooooo
is a lot of your stuff gluten free? My girlfriend has been considering going gluten free for a while now cause she gets really bad stomach aches pretty often and was told it may be from gluten.
Also, the teriyaki was good, but was overshadowed by the Thai sauce. Which is also telling because I like chicken more than beef. Dunno if that is more to do with the sauce or the meat(the beef was incredibly juicy and delicious).
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
you got the Thai? That's one of my faves.
The teriyaki is one there as a safe flavor, it’s good for picky people and for kids. The Thai Mama cart next to us had some of our Bangkok Ballers for lunch last week and were begging me for the recipe for that sauce….

haha, that's pretty crazy.
I had to explain to my girlfriend why it was funny that you said “hopefully those aren’t undercooked.” She laughed when I told her the story and agreed that our meat was perfectly cooked.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
My dad came by today, he wanted to fix the "problem" with undercooked chicken.
What he doesn’t realize is that that problem was because of him. He was trying to convince me that it was the system and not his fault, but I know exactly how it happened when he was cooking. We pre cook everything up to a point and then we finish it in a chafing dish. When we get an order the kebabs are all perfectly juicy and proper temp as long as we don’t let the heat out of the chafing dish. Temperature changes going up or down eventually dry out your meat, but if you can hold it at the perfect temp it stays good for hours. My dad made the mistake of leaving the lid off for too long, too many times when he was helping me. The kebabs that were already in the chafer got cool, and with each subsequent opening of the lid they all lost temp plus adding more mass in there means more energy has to be applied to get everything up to the temp it should have been at if he’d of just been more careful putting the lid back when he was done.
His solution today was to pre-cook the chicken breast whole, then cut them up and skewer them to in his eyes, save time. I listened to him and just said, “yeah, we’re not doing that.” and he got pissed. He acted like it was the biggest insult anybody had ever said to him. I stopped short of saying, “Nobody else has had a problem with undercooked chicken except you for leaving the dang lid off!”, cause you know, I’m not a total jerk.

when you expand and get rich
you should buy your dad a retirement home in Hawaii so he stops giving you crap for something you know what you’re doing with. haha, kidding of course, but that’s frustrating that he’s till harking on it, especially since he caused the problem in the first place. When you made the joke today I didn’t want to say anything right then cause I wasn’t sure if the cook was your dad or your partner(I didn’t really get a good look at him because his back was to us and he had a hat on). But after we ate and were walking around a bit I saw the guy head on and figured he’s probably too young to be your daddy.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
Yeah, that was my friend, he used to own the Outback Steakhouse on 82nd, so I figured I could trust him with the grill.
The thing that sucks was my dad drove all the way down from Vancouver, and when he started talking to me about it, you could tell he was so proud of what he had come up with for the solution. I was working and busy, and I just wanted to be honest about it. Just don’t think he took it very well. But seriously, if I cooked whole chicken breasts before hand, that’s a whole new thing that I have to do, not to mention waiting for it to cool, cutting it up and then skewering to end up with a dry piece of meat that I would feel horrible about serving. Not to mention, the health dept would be all over me for doing that, they do not want you cooking it that way.

I love the new Magic Mouse (the flat one) and use nothing else aside from a trackpad. I wasn’t really found of the two earlier models and usually used Logitech mice then. And a standard old Microsoft mouse on a PC.
the magic mouse lets you use your finger as a stylus right?

To scroll yes, not to paint.
The whole surface is scroll sensitive and a button. It’s really well designed, though I needed maybe 2 days to get used to it after being used to heavier mices with more volume. Then I loved it. But I heard mixed reviews, so it’s still an individual taste decision.
I also like the new MacBook trackpads where I really don’t need a mouse though I did bring mine for work at my desk. But I also know people who swear on the IBM/Lenovo trackpads because they combine two navigations. Or people who just use the iPad ever since it came out because they love the direct touch. It’s all a matter of what you are used to and what you can get comfortable with quickly. I suppose the next generation of notebooks might combine both, a physical keyboard and a touch screen.
I figured it wouldn't be worth much as a stylus for painting, given the size constraints of a usable mouse.
Does it have some way of distinguishing between a finger and your palm when you go to use it as a traditional mouse? I imagine it’s somewhat like my iphone, just curious if you ever have the cursor jump across the page when you first grab the mouse.
I do like the interface on my iphone, and was seriously considering an ipad for awhile, but ultimately wasn’t sure I was ready to cut ties with an actual keyboard just yet. So we’re going with a super budget laptop, basically a larger netbook, and a kindle for the ebook stuff.

Nope, it works very well though yes when I move my palm over it I can get it to scroll
But that is a deliberate movement, when I just grab after it or rest the hand on it nothing happens. Try it out in some Apple store to see if you like it some time. It’s just bluetooth, so it might even work on Windows. And while it’s one button, at least on the Mac you can assign it an area for the secondary click/right click.
P.S.: I usually don’t rest the whole hand on it like it was some flint stone that I need to clutch to make fire ;-) Mainly just two fingers on it, and moving it side to side with the thumb and ring finger. I dunno, for me it just works really well. And I’ve used everything from the original Microsoft mouse to that monstrous big new MS mouse that also worked well especially for 3D programs where you need 3 buttons to various Mac and Logitech mice. Just for general work it’s my favorite mouse so far.
Making fire with flint stones is a valuable skill

To some level, I think a Mac or Windows comfort is dependent on a person's thinking style.
Some people click with a Windows setup, others with a Mac. And for .05% of people, Linux.
oh that's cool, the single button thing just didn't make sense to me. It's not that it's a really complex action, it's just after spending thousands of hours using a two button mouse it's a completely ingrained thing for me.

I pretty much hold it like that hand model at the bottom of this page. And only use the first two gestures.

I have switched off the screen zoom, since that is annoying when it happens on websites like the JD without intending to do so. For photos zooming around is kinda fun. And on the trackpad notebooks you can also do the finger pinch to zoom into photos like on the iPhone.
that looks pretty sweet actually, doesn't look compatible with windows though.

I’m gonna have to try really hard to get them. My cousin’s aunt won second row season tix at a some party thing a couple months ago (I’m pretty sure I mentioned it here before).
She’s not even a Blazer fan and will probably sell most of them, I’m assuming. My cousin knows I would kill for some tickets so she’s gonna try and get some for me.
I think I'm gonna splurge for courtside seats this year.
I’ll be in school so I’ll won’t be able to go to a lot of my games. I think I’ll sell a bunch and consolidate the profits into some awesome seats.

He also is great at creating nightmarish scenarios his characters have to deal with, his films have this classic gothic style to them.
Check out Suspiria if you’re interested in him. It’s probably his best movie.

Scandinavian thrillers, mysteries and horror films are quite good
There have been a lot of remakes by hollywood, and a new one is upcoming: Let the right one in.
that remake of Let the Right One In looks horrible.
and i agree, the few scandinavian area films i’ve seen have all been pretty good.

Apparently they showed some new footage at Comic Con that was quite convincing, especially regarding the female lead. Slightly different interpretation, and it will definitely be hard to reach much less exceed the quality of the book or the movie. It’s not really something that the world needs.
Nightwatch is also a good Danish thriller. There was a shot for shot remake, and that still wasn’t as good.
i saw the trailer for it. looked more like straight horror without the depth. really didn’t look good at all to me.

it's such a beautiful film
there’re so many layers to it. It’s not just a straight horror film, which makes it so unique and wonderful. I didn’t buy it because when it came out people were really hating on the DVD release because the translation is said to be really bad, but I think they may have fixed that. I’m still hesitant, though, and kind of want to wait for a better release.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
when you buy it, just look at the back and make sure it says “theatrical subtitles” in the subtitle area. i had to buy the dvd twice because of this.

seriously
it was super bright Friday too. I was joking with my girlfriend that I’d be fine walking home from the bar just by moonlight(she always gets nervous that I won’t find my way home, even though I’m usually out with my parents by the end of the night and my mom drives me home.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
Did you end up walking home? I got very lost and very confused in the middle of town last night.
High off of love.
Drunk from the hate.
nope, got a ride with my mama
good thing, too, cause I got a lot drunker than I had planned. My dad convinced my mom and I to go to another bad after our bar called last call and I got a vodka 7 up and the dude gave me 90% vodka. It was an awesome drink, but enough to toss me over the edge from “buzzed” to “drunk”
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
haha, it's an awesome set up
my mom is a bartender at a restaurant, so she gets off work just after midnight. If I’m out drinking, around 1130-midnight I’ll migrate to the bar my dad hangs out in, where I know all the customers and am often treated to drinks(Which is also awesome) and wait for my mom to get off work. Then we all hang out and talk for a while and my mom drives me home and then herself and my father to their place.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
The Edward Hopper painting?
I love that painting, and wish my life resembled it. I refuse to listen to the D12 song to see if that relates.

Personal finance advice for dummies: Pay it off and get a new one ;-)
My bank credit is under 6 percent despite going over multiple years (there are also a few credible private 2 private loan websites with even lower rates, but I haven’t tried that yet myself). If I overdraw my debit card bank account that still is under 10 percent. And my credit cards really are all rather debit cards so I know after a month what I have to pay. I don’t feel good with having debt, though maybe once I should go really big into it…
Yeah, I was stupid and young and got this CC too high
and now I don’t make enough to just pay it off on a whim to get out of it, otherwise i would have. It’s less than 5k, but with my current financial situation I feel buried under it. I know that once I finish school and get a real career, that won’t be too hard to get paid off, it’s just dealing with the stress of it and the annoyance of giving them so much money just for interest that kills me.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
sounds like my van
but my wife was stupid and young and bought it (with my power of attorney, so really i bought it) while i was in iraq. too high of interest, knows nothing about cars or finance=taken advantage of.
#88
my score took a shot
i was 760 before the laws came into effect and right now i’m sitting at 680 bc my spending to credit ratio is much higher now that they’ve shrank my limits for no reason. wtz!

i had a super good credit score
and i pay off my balance in full every month. i use my credit card as if it were a debit card and just earn a ton of bonus points on the sucker. i think i may have to stop in the near future just to build my credit score up again.
i wish congress would stop doing something about it…its as if they are plugging a hole on a leaky boat only to have a leak spring somewhere else. this all came as a result of the law that was passed to aid irresponsible borrowers.

and the other thing they don’t tell you is if you apply for a credit card, or your credit card co. randomly checks your score, it goes down. The whole thing is an absolute disaster, particularly for renters who don’t get credit for paying for their housing so our scores are much more volatile.
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/24/business/24nocera.html?_r=2&ref=business
sorta true
thats old news tho…when you do anything that involves your SSN…always ask if its a soft pull or a hard pull. a soft pull does not harm your credit score (it just shows up as an inquiry on your credit report)…however a hard pull does lower your score by a few marginal points. over time that can add up. if you are car shopping or home shopping and you are comparing rates…make sure to do all of your “pulls” within 15 days of your first pull. they only ding your credit once if you do it that way.

yeah, it's old news
but I think people have had to become a lot more credit score conscious over the past two years, so a they’re getting a rude awakening with that.
very true
the hard thing is keeping up with all of the changes. i honestly never thought i would be affected by any of this…my unexpected drop has delayed my purchase of a car. all of my cards are on auto pay and are paid in full every month. i havent missed a payment in 7 years or so…so i was very shocked to see my score drop so low.

the lenders have become a lot more credit-score sensitive, which is the sensible thing to do, but now people have to adjust.
this is also a somewhat strange aspect of that—employers are increasingly using your credit score in the hiring decision.
I’m not sure I come down on that as strongly as Kevin Drum, but it really is something to watch for, particularly considering employers aren’t giving out credit and credit scores are more an indication of whether you’ve got $$ than whether you’re trustworthy.
there is a ton of potential for abuse/confusion
when employers are doing that. i think again the onus is on us to check and verify our own scores before applying for a job. if there are some errors, perhaps it might be best to be honest with your perspective employer. at the same time a lot of employers are not even telling applicants that they are doing credit checks…and if you are just going to believe the score without hearing the persons side of the story, much could be left out as well. especially with identity theft spiraling out of control as we all become more and more reliant on the internet.

particularly
considering that in this labor market, the credit check is probably thought of as a cheap screening tool before the interview phase, denying the applicant any opportunity to explain.
i bet i was hit harder
i had two states report me for not paying child support for 2 yearts (I pay NC the state its ordered to so i didnt feel like triple paying a bill) going thru getting it off my credit for the 3rd time now with oregon 4th time with oklahoma. how i wish i could sue the state

i'm not going to argue that i got it worse
what i’m going thru is pretty minor compared to what many americans are going thru.

the way i currently spend
interest rates dont really affect me….when i signed up for my credit cards, i specifically chose those with the highest limits on purpose. those cards tend to have the highest paybacks on rewards. considering that i have always paid all my CCs in full every month, the interest has never accumulated on me. basically it was a free monthly loan that the CC companies gave me and i get a nice rebate pretty regularly that has added up.

Norsk is this true?
Talking to friends from the EU, the whole concept of credit scores was completely alien to them. Same with credit cards.
There are no student loans, because tuition is low and even a living stipend is covered as a grant so long as the student graduates in their program. Therefore no student debt (the level of shock at the level of student debt their NA friends quoted was pretty funny).
There are few credit cards, largely because it’s socially frowned on.
When you buy a house or car, you provide proof of income, they apply a multiplier, and give you approval for X amount of real estate debt. That’s it.
Turns out the whole industry isn’t really required. More and more I’m seeing the whole financial sector as being in dire need of a 90% culling.
Read it in a comment section of a blog. It would be persuasive if verifiable.
To some extent yes
There is a credit score in most countries (I don’t think there is a pan-EU one, but not sure), only it doesn’t get publicized or used quite as strictly. But companies can see your credit history e.g. before giving you a bank loan, and if you have a really bad one you won’t even get a cellphone contract or another credit card. You can request to see your file e.g. in Scandinavian countries, Austria, Germany, etc. to know where you’re at.
There is no tuition or very low tuition (think $500 per semester, sometimes only for students who exceed the average study time for a degree) in many countries for public universities – and most of the well-known ones are public. High schools are generally free, except for boarding schools. And the UK is more similar to the US system though.
Everyone I know has credit cards, but usually not more than 1-2 (private, maybe 1 more from the company), and you generally don’t borrow heavily on them. For that, you take out a bank loan. I e.g. have an Amex that doesn’t even offer loans – please pay after 1 month. And a Visa from my house bank. And that’s it.
And yes, many products of the mortgage industry are a US invention. And people generally tend to rent longer and not go into debt they can’t afford at a very young age. Though I do quite regularly see people in cars they probably can’t afford and that are just leased.
the house thing seems to be the most important
since that’s where we have the biggest difference in standards, and that’s where most credit comes from. It’s nuts to me that some people in the U.S. see buying a house as something less than a lifetime (or very long-term, 15+ yr) commitment.
yeah i only have two credit cards, and I pay them every month.
Not only do I not pay for tuition, but i get paid to study :)
Well, I come from a system where universities are mostly free and (depending on the income of you and your parents) you get support from the state while you are a student towards your rent, cost of living, and health insurance. Until a certain age, not forever. And the max amount is as high as social security for an employee who becomes (long term) unemployed, which seems fair since you already have free education and likely will have a higher income in the future than the average person.
Of note: I did not take advantage of this, and spent almost my entire university education at private schools abroad. Financially, maybe a fail
I also like the Australian model, where you have to pay tuition, but you can easily get fair long-term loans at no or low interest, and you only have to start paying them back once you make more than the average Australian so you don’t start your working life in deep debt.
I have 2 brothers and 2 sisters
so regardless of income, i have free tuition. The rest of the money comes from scholarships for “academic excellence” (public).
+ all the mistakes
And finally, they don’t take into account the many, many mistakes that are found in credit reports. My own credit reports, which I looked up for this column, are a case in point. Although my score was O.K. — the low 700s — the reports themselves were full of unpleasant surprises. They listed credit card accounts I didn’t have, and failed to list at least one big one that I did have. Two of them noted that five years ago, I was late on a car payment. (I was?) My daughter’s old Brooklyn address was listed as my former address. According to Experian, I was still writing for Fortune magazine. It said I no longer lived in a house that I just bought two months ago. TransUnion, meanwhile, listed The New York Times as my former employer. Currently, TransUnion said, I am an employee of Rite Aid.
very true
but its is also our responsibility to monitor our own report for accuracy.

I had an old debt that I paid off come back after being sold by the company I paid the money to.
And it’s the onus of the payee to prove that you’ve paid it. So annoying to take care of a black mark from the past, and have it continue to follow you for years in the future. Luckily my fiancee works at a law firm, and her boss just made one phone call…

Yeah I zapped into that show a few days ago
She denied some poor woman a $500 farm holiday in case they got into an accident because they had “only” savings of like 40k. Lolwut? I mean, nothing against being cautious, but I’ve gone on more expensive holidays and study trips with far less savings. And never regretted anything. Then again I rarely regret money spent on experiences…
Yeah, she is nuts. I mean for some people maybe they really need her advice, but at some point it's okay to live a little Suze.
Of course it’s easy to preach when you are sitting on a fortune made from telling people how to not spend their money.

That show has found imitators overseas
And yes, if you are in deep debt and don’t open letters from creditors anymore, have a lifestyle far exceeding your likely income and know nothing about personal finances much less how to manage a budget someone like that might be helpful, over the TV, via books or even better in person. But she seems to overdo it a bit with being stern and cautious.
With a grand total of $500 in savings, a car loan and CC debt I also would say “are you nuts” when someone would ask me if he should buy an expensive laptop. But with 40k in savings and a family income of I think 80k that sounded very extreme. That family shouldn’t buy a car for 50k, but no holiday?
she caters her show to people who have very little personal finance skills
no different than the blazer broadcasts tend to cater towards the casual fan.

does anyone think miller is more then an expiring contract?
reading all these trade ideas it seems like every thinks miller is the 12th man and plays 2 min a game. most likely he will be the starting pg for 82 games next season (really only 70ish because portland will have a 30 game lead with 20 games left and rest the starters for 10)
why is ever trade rumor just throw him out there as an expiring contract? hes still a good pg.

Miller is a good PG. If we get Chris Paul, he’s almost certainly being traded though, if not to New Orleans than to somewhere else.
yeah and he's clearly more valuable as a trade asset than as a backup PG, a position that I don't think he's willing to play just yet.

so she keeps the original one and if i want to wear it for special occasions, than it’s cool with her…other than that it doesn’t really matter.

what’s funny is they load this thing in, which basically looks like an over-sized bullet, and the engineer pushes it in up to his shoulder, then he actually gets his leg in there to get it in deeper. this is crazy, the divers from the aquarium are trying to capture some sea otters. To do it they have to swim up from underneath them, wearing rebreathers so the scuba bubbles don't indicate their presence

History of failed physicals. The latest: Luther Head, Hornets, in what some pundits have called second thoughts by the team.
I heard about some research where astrophysicist found a region where different laws of physics might exist. I don’t have the context, but it would be funny if those laws aren’t as “universal” as we currently think.
I doubt it
just because there would be a “boundary” between the area with our physical laws and the different ones. Different physical laws interacting at the boundary or something crossing the boundary would create a lot of strange happenings.

Oh, that wasn't a rumor.
That was just a trade Hollinger came up with saying it made the most sense to him.
and of course it makes no sense
since they wouldn’t want to take back a long-term deal on a less good player and also push themselves into the tax. Someone said Hollinger is just like a normal fan with the trade machine, which is totally true.
Hollinger thought it was a "fair trade"
Apparently giving up your franchise player, locked up for 5 years, for a player who is a free agent in two years and may miss part of that for a lockout is a “fair trade”.

my original response was that i was wondering if they still make full scale war type movies…saving private ryan, ehh opening scene in gladiator, pearl harbor, etc. i’ve kinda thought of LOTR as a mixture of fantasy, adventure, and epic war.

I pretty much agree with the reviews of the NYT, WSJ and some industry friends of mine, 2 of which found it it “very good not great” and only 1 loved it. One who is a director thought t will get discussed in film schools a lot for it’s use of time (within time) like some other movies and admired its density, but also criticized a lot about it.
Indeed
It was an annual event my last three years in college that as soon as we finished fall semester exams we’d hope in my friend’s car and drive to his hometown for deep dish and to watch the new LOTR movie.

Just seeing if there's a fine line between "sucks" and "overrated"
I have a hard time sitting through the three movies without thinking “did they forget to hire an editor?”.
Though I commented earlier today (we had it on TNT) that Pippin’s song as a truly outstanding moment of cinema.
i wouldn’t think the line between “sucks” and “overrated” is too fine. the line between very good/excellent/great and overrated is probably a very fine line though.
what’s funny about your comment with the editor is that the extended versions of those movies with the added in footage are all, i think, 30+ minutes longer than the theatrical versions. and in the case of The Two Towers, the extended version is much better.

I haven't seen all three extended editions in their entirety.
When you’re watching a movie and thinking “come on, I can see thirty minutes you could have edited out with no real loss”, it’s so hard to convince yourself to watch a longer version. Not that it isn’t great for people who want to see every bit of the book covered.
But I sure hope they didn’t win an Oscar for best adaptation. Checking… oh man, it won for adapted screenplay. Oh my.
well if it’s not your type of movie it’s not your type of movie. but i would venture to say that for someone who read the books, those movies, especially the extended cuts, were just as long as they needed to be.

Correct. But for people who didn't read the books
You’re thinking, “these are good movies, but come on, use some editing.”
Hence why there’s a level of feeling their overrated, for people who weren’t all about the books.
i have no way to give a counter point here really. i did see the first movie before i read the book though, and i thought the movie was amazing. it blew me away.

I feel like the third movie could have been ended after the rescue from Mt Doom, saving like 20 minutes
Though on the other hand it’s nice so see the loose ends wrapped up.
Aside from that, not that much editing necessary for me. And I remember being surprised and stoked at the same time when that first Fellowship trailer ran in cinemas, announcing that they would show one film per year for the next 3 (or at that time 4) years into the future. That was pretty much unheard of. So they needed some content for that. And while the second film just leads to the third, I did really like that. I think that was the only one I saw with my parents, and they even liked it albeit my mother loathes fantasy and sci-fi and is way more into crime and drama.

yeah but Tolkien was one of the first to write fantasy like that
he didn’t have much, if anything, to reference for formatting with writing like that. It’s half of why LOTR is so damn amazing, because it was so unique and beautiful and just completely fantastic for its time. Plus all the bloody languages. Tolkien was such a genius, truly one of my great heroes.

I read a great story years ago about the friendship between C.S. Lewis and Tolkien who had vastly different views on religion and would discuss their points of view in the context of what they were writing
I'm a Greg Oden honk, yeah.
Even when I was still a Sonic fan, I liked Oden more than Kevin Durant.

there was 4 of them in that group called The Inklings and they all met in Cambridge. i’ve heard that CS Lewis was influential in Tolkien’s conversion, or maybe it was the opposite. i don’t remember who the other 2 in that group were.

I would like to look at it again, it was something I borrowed from a friend whose grandma had told her LOTR’s were movies about devil worship.

that may be. but just from a writer standpoint, you don’t have the climax of the entire series in the middle of the last book. it just doesn’t make sense.

yeah I've wanted that edition for a while.
is the one you have in English? the red paperbacks? If so, that is my ideal LOTR collection.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
I think i might have this same edition
the 1st book in this edition i thought was unbearable, it took me ~ 5 months to get through it, i read about a dozen books in between. The rest was amazing.
This is what I mean by that "best adapted screenplay" Oscar. Blech.
For the first two movies, there was no one big segment where I thought, “this whole segment needs to go”… more that they meandered during sequences that could have been tighter.
I’m not as big of a Peter Jackson fan as some. Again, not that it’s a bad movie, just that I don’t think it’s the greatest thing ever made.
I’m not a Peter Jackson fan at all, in fact I hated most of King Kong and I think I didn’t watch his first movie though I saw the one about the two girls. But I do think it was a great project. Maybe he should get more credit as a project manager/producer than as a director to pull it off?
I apparently need to include an addendum.
I was commenting about this thread out loud to the wife (Me: “I was doing another round about the editing in LotR.” Her: “Oh no, not this again”)
I explained that I think it’s a good movie, just not, you know, The Greatest Movie or anything.
Her response: “Well no, the greatest movie of all time is Star Wars.”
hahaha, Timmay's wife for the win

She’s a sci-fi junkie, and doesn’t take movies too seriously. It was a great flippant response. :)
Timmay will recreate her, like in that Star Trek TNT episode with two old people alone on a planet seemingly destroyed by an alien ship except for their house
Hey I like that episode.
I expected you to go for the episode where Data creates Lal, except as a wife instead.
Wait, did I just type that and click submit?
i can do that with The Karate Kid.
the last time i watched it the friend i was watching with said, “ok you can’t do that through the entire movie.” it was sorta disappointing for me.

It is excessive.
I appreciate the detail from a writer making his own world but actually trying to read it (especially when as a young teen which is how I old I was when I first read the triology) makes my head think I’m studying.
Yeah, that's how old I was too.
I read the Hobbit at like 10 or so and that reads more like a kids book and when I have read it since then it’s been good but felt like I was reading a kid’s book. But the trilogy (and especially the Fellowship) really reads so densely and is very limited in action and the descriptions of things tend to read like historical accounts more than living stories. But I still appreciate his imagination.
i read the Hobbit right before the trilogy
and really enjoyed it. I haven’t reread it… maybe before the movie comes out :)
I re-read it at about 19. Right before I re-read the trilogy.
I’m really excited to see how that movie goes :)
MLS power!

The New York Red Bulls subjected Manchester City to their second successive pre-season defeat in the United States, thanks to a 25-yard winner from Dane Richards.
Macoumba Kandji’s opener put City on the back foot again – as they had opened the four-team New York Challenge with a 2-0 loss to Sporting Lisbon – and new Red Bulls signing Thierry Henry was again pulling the strings for the MLS side.
However Henry missed a great chance as he failed to beat Joe Hart, missing the ball as he attempted to round the City keeper after beating the offside trap, before the break and Jo hit back for City after half-time as he converted Greg Cunningham’s low cross with a delicate chip.
As a sluggish City tired in the New York heat, the Red Bulls were soon on the front foot again and the impressive Richards unleashed an unstoppable shot which went in off the bar with 19 minutes remaining.
City’s Alex Nimely could have claimed a draw in the final few minutes, but incredibly he turned Adam Johnson’s cross over the bar from just a yard out.
Manchester United also lost 2-1 to MLS opposition, falling to a 10-man Kansas City Wizards in their latest North American tour match.

Bad crash on 26 eastbound near sunset TC.
Passed it by 30 mins ago and all lanes were closed and people were standing around in the highway. So if they ain’t cleared it yet you’ll be trapped.

The O says
A suspected reckless driver is in custody tonight after causing a four-vehicle crash just west of the Sylvan Overpass on U.S. 26 that has shut down eastbound lanes and sent one victim to the hospital, according to Sgt. Jim Shumway of the Beaverton Police Department.
The suspect, whose identity has not been released, clipped another car about 8 p.m. on U.S. 26 and caused a chain reaction. One female passenger was trapped in a car that flipped over before being transported to the hospital, according to Shumway, but early information suggests the injuries are not life-threatening.
The suspect was arrested on reckless driving charges, with assault charges pending, Shumway said.
The Oregon Department of Transportation is currently on the scene, redirecting drivers onto the southbound lanes of Oregon 217 and preventing northbound drivers on Oregon 217 from going onto U.S. 26.
Police expected the closure to last about an hour.

CP3 originally didn’t have portland in his top 4(the report of the l*kers was correct). Allen after hearing this immediately called up secret agent Norsktroll and had him plant the idea in his mind that la=bad and portland=good. that would explain why he changed his mind the next day. Level one was him at a pick up basketball game where norsk impersonated Lebron. The rest is just too complicated but in the end they changed his mind
i'm gonna switch sides and side with Norsk

I assume it would work on a T-Mobile branded model, pretty sure it was basically the same. Perhaps the version you tried was too big to fit on the available memory, and need to use the smaller version instead?

It’s one of my all time favorite shows, and hands down the best final scene I have ever seen in television. I watched the final scene before going to a day of finals and was so amazed with it that I was distracted all day long. I own the entire series(two copies, actually, long story…) and will let you borrow them after you finish Always Sunny, should you be interested.

yeah, speaking of Caine’s role, you know what a cameo is right?
it’s not like just cause it’s Caine he has to have some huge role. he did what he had to do. he was probably only in the movie at all because Nolan likes him.

With more expository writing self-important dialogue how it all began and works. Though this movie wasn’t exactly short of expository writing to begin with.

I would bet they want a second one, with or without Nolan. Heck, there could even be a Matrix crossover!!!

He’s up here because he’s good. That don’t mean [a hill of beans]. it turns your basic home router into a superrouter

Philthy is correct.
It’s a replacement firmware for a number of router models (most famously, the Linksys WRT54GL). It’s basically a tiny install of Linux for home networking.
A number of the stock firmwares are very mediocre. Some of them are very unfinished. Bugs, broken features, you need to reboot them every three days.
DD-WRT can be used on a number of those. It’s fairly stable and can have hundreds more features than the default firmware companies provide. It’s more useful for some than others. If you’re frustrated at your current firmware, and your router supports DD-WRT, you can try it. There’s always a possibility it will render it useless if it fails, so you need to be careful. But typically the install goes fine.
Later this Summer, Buffalo tech will start making DD-WRT enabled routers, the first time you can get it installed by default on commercial routers.
Worth noting that not everyone likes DD-WRT. Open WRT is preferred by a number of techies because it’s more stripped down and can be faster. (DD-WRT has so many features that it’s pretty big and can slow down for some people). Open WRT is also open source. (DD-WRT is based on the core of Open WRT).
Tomato is an alternative firmware. I’ve had very good luck with Tomato, and it’s actually my first choice.
I am going to get a new router before long
I have an old Netgear WGR614 that has run great for years, aside from needing restarts every few days.
My new computer (when I get it) supports N, so I want to get a new router that can do that. I have one other computer and I’ll probably be getting a wireless printer. In the past my networking between the computers has been pretty simple. Like I said, I don’t know what I’d need to do with it. I just like to be able to play with stuff.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.

In a much more boring movie conversation...
We watched “Monsters vs. Aliens” tonight. It’s probably one of Dreamworks’ better animated works that I’ve seen, along with Shrek and Chicken Run. (I haven’t seen Dragon, and I liked Kung Fu Panda).
It worked well as a kids movie, even in 2D, despite a couple obvious “look at the 3D!” moments.
Weirdly enough, I think Dreamworks did make a minor mistake. Considering the CGI effects available, I might have enjoyed it more as a live-action movie.
Either way, I see why it made a bunch of money and was decently regarded. For a throwaway kids movie, it was at least entertaining, unlike some of Dreamworks Animation’s other work.
good to know
we passed on that one in theaters and haven’t rented it yet because the animation looked odd and the characters seem unappealing. We loved Dragon and Kung Fu Panda, though, and the first Shrek.

We liked the animation, but it's definitely different if you're used to Pixar
There are a few moments specifically for the adults in the movie, too, which was nice. It could be scary for any tiny kids, but it’s a fairly fun movie overall. A decent amount of action, and (of course) a fairly simple script for the kids.
The animation in the action scenes was great. It was easy to get caught up in the movie at times.
Haha, maybe I shouldn't watch the premeire of Mad Men, season 4
I’m recording it right now and just had the show on because I can’t turn the channel and had some spoilerific moments.

REJOICE! Shanxi Zhongyu has re-signed Stephon Marbury

Stephon Marbury apparently is a BOSS!
Cracked is like crack
Maybe the worst critique I've read that came out when the first LOTR movies were released was that the orks were "obviously" racist creations meant to mock Aborigines
Yeah right, Tolkien was afraid of immigration from Australia into England and that caused him to write the book series. Nice try. That the book celebrates friendship across different cultures/races apparently went over the head of this critic. At most, it might have been a critique of the industrialization destroying the nature of the British midlands that Tolkien loved (think the Isengard sequences where they cut down all the trees to keep the mines and “production” going). But even that might be reading too much into it, and he just wanted to create his own fantasy world – and language.

My better half sleeps with ear plugs
There is one particular model of ear plug that works better for her than any other she has tried. That particular model is difficult to impossible to find in stores, and it may have actually been discontinued. My wife also has something of a hoarding instinct and a huge fear of running out of things.
What’s your point, Dan? My point is this: I just ordered a 3000 pair case of ear plugs from ebay.

Does Chris Paul being ineligible for an extension until July of 2011 change anyone's opinion on getting him?
It doesn’t for me, even though I still argue vehemently that Greg Oden should unquestionably be off the table in trade talks involving Paul.
Not worried about the extension, and it's part of why he could be available at all: The fear of New Orleans of losing him for nothing
But it should also reduce his trade value to some extent.
Unless he does an illegal handshake deal with the team before the trade, not that he couldn’t back out.
Definitely not. If it backfires, it seriously damages your team
And if doesn’t always work out anyway, see: Boozer, Carlos.
Not at all
If he wants to contend for a championship, he should be able to do that here, so long as we get him in a reasonable trade.
Here’s my thought, though. There’s a lot of talk of possibly losing him after 2 years, then being left without some pieces after that. OK, so what? We get to actually contend for 2 years. That’s a big deal. When you talk about maybe contending in a few years, you’re looking at lousy odds of winning. We could win now if we get him. Of course, the potential lockout would completely suck for us.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
by dan_the_man on Jul 25, 2010 11:08 PM PDT up reply actions
The way I look at it
We wouldn’t be on Paul’s wish list if he wasn’t good with playing here long term.
To the people who are worried he would bolt in 2 years: Why would getting the extension matter anyway? He’s already trying to force his way out of a contract. If he’s unhappy he’s going to leave by hook or crook no matter what.
Can I get an Armon?
Trying to force a trade a couple years into a new contract
Would probably be better than him walking after 2 years, though. Even though a forced trade can diminish trade value, we’d still get good stuff in return. Look at what we’re offering: Batum, Bayless, solid vets/salary relief. Not too shabby.

Yeah, thankfully I got really good at BS'ing papers when I took a writing class and an English class concurrently for three straight terms
my freshman year of college, even. I got so used to writing papers that I got to the point where I could take just about any idea and run with it, creating a pretty good paper pretty quickly. However, this ends up being a double edged sword, because when I come across a topic that stumps me, I have a very difficult time with it and often don’t budget my time well because I’m overly confident.

I hate when the proverbial "she" laughs out loud
it makes things so complicated.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
Context is key to when she can laugh out loud certainly.
But at the right time it’s cool if you like to hear her laugh anyway :)
indeed
now when you both start laughing… that’s a fun experience but definitely changes the mood. hahaha

Ok, I'd like to briefly bring a point I've been making about win shares over here to the JD
because it’s been ignored several times elsewhere and dammit I want some feedback.
A player’s “standard” stats like points and rebound, advanced stats like PER, TS% etc remain stable. The player moves from a 25 win team to a 55 win team. The player’s Win Share increases substantially. Is there some overlooked variable (usage, efficiency) or hidden variable boosting the win share or is it a product of moving to a much better team.
I’m roughly approximating Pau Gasol here, by the way.

If you want it detailed, you can read this explanation of the used formulas
http://www.basketball-reference.com/about/ws.html
It gets normalized for the new pace of the team and such things. But if you are on a better team and win more, yes also your win shares should go up since adding up all win shares of the players on a team has to roughly equal the wins that team had (there is some error in there, as high as a couple of wins in total for a team). Unless you were just the hero on a terrible team and that gets exposed once you move to a better team and lose your playing time or something like that. In Gasol’s case, he already was a very good player on a mediocre team (at least they made the playoffs once or so), and certainly didn’t get worse once he came to the Lakers.
yeah, I read the explanation
I was looking for confirmation of my analysis is all.
Can I get an Armon?
Hehe
But it’s a good point. Part of winning more might be players like Roy and LaMarcus improving, but part of it was also building a better roster around them, so it’s hard to deduct how much improvement a player had just by looking at win shares.
Correct, but if a player maintains his stats and increases his win shares
It’s reasonable to say his skills translate well to a winning team, which is a very important detail.
Al Jefferson will be an interesting example of this over the next season.
it could be fit
it could be a benefit of teaming up with another good player instead of carrying a team alone
Can I get an Armon?
Absolutely
Or your numbers could be the result of getting a lot of touches on a bad team. So moving from a bad team to a good one can tell you a lot about a player.

Oh oh, a Rudy mailbag
Have Dave and Ben been asked to drive click rates and comments? Is SBN preparing an IPO and has to hit some target marks?
sad
poor Rudy. I’ll miss the heck out of that guy. He was one of the more exciting “young” guys that I’ve seen in a Blazers jersey and didn’t expect to be a star (like I did for Roy and Oden and LMA).

Casino was just on, so in honor of that movie
Name movies that should never be on commercial television because it the editing would kill it.
Can I get an Armon?
anything by Martin Scorsese.
anything by the Coen Brothers.
any action movie cause they don’t know how to edit for commercials and end up cutting during action scenes.
anything by QT.
anything by Charlie Kauffman because the commercial breaks would make things even more confusing.
i could go on but this feels like enough.

More proof that Bleacher Report is terrible (as if it needed more)
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/424872-new-yorks-possible-path-to-chris-paul
And I get articles/posts like that into my news stream as news. Ugh. Yeah right, the Hornets would be all over a deal that brings them Eddy Curry, Ronny Turiaf, Danilo Gallinari (reluctantly, as another NY media member wrote), Kelenna Azubuike and his surgically repaired knee (think Joel, only worse since he needs his athleticism), and Toney Douglas.
That’s about as good as sending out all our fanposts as news. In fact, it’s exactly the same.
Rather than Rocky Mountain oysters from castrated bulls, we can have fried British Isle oysters ...

the weekend report
Those of us who were at the beer festival this weekend had more fun than those of us who were not there.
Also, Zony Mash with Horns were quite awesome. And The Ocean Floor’s CD release party was very nice indeed and perfect for a too-hot Saturday night. – Elgin

speaking of chapters, is aug 1 or 2 still a realistic date for people finishing the book club book and then having the discussion that day?
"My love winks, she does not bother / She knows too much to argue or to judge"
cause if it’s gonna be longer i’m gonna start another book and i know some people haven’t even recieved their copies yet. i want to keep the book lodged in my brain for the discussion so i’m waiting to start another, for now.

I've decided to skip the first one, since I couldn't get it as an audiobook and have too much non-fiction books to read
I wanted to “read” while I’m commuting/traveling/have downtime/etc. This way, I’ll probably put in another book or so before the next one is up. I think I’ll next listen to Life of Pi.
I know
You build us one….I would be interested to see the topic
