The Dontonio Wingcast Episode 029

It's been forever but Basketball Prospectus's Kevin Pelton and I are back with a new The Dontonio Wingcast in honor of Portland's hiring of Rich Cho.  This week's episode (41 minutes) sounds more like a victory lap than a basketball podcast.

  • KP2 gives us the inside scoop on working with Cho in Seattle, what his addition means for the Blazers, what it means for the APBRmetrics community, who Cho might target as his assistant GM and a bunch more.
  • We then talk a little about the Wesley Matthews signing: the numbers, whether Kevin Pritchard or Cho would have done the deal, Matthews' personality and lineup fit, and the impact on future moves like extensions for Greg Oden and Nicolas Batum.

Click here to Download The Dontonio Wingcast 029You can also subscribe to our iTunes feed or our Microsoft Zune feed.

For more Rich Cho discussion check out this interview with Antonio Harvey and Mike Barrett on Monday night's episode of Blazers Courtside.  The segment starts at the 28 minute mark.

I’ve never listened to one of these. Sell me on it. Why listen to this vs. just reading front page stories? Give me a reason and I’ll start listening.

I want to..

Do you listen to sports radio or other Blazer podcasts? Are you interested in basketball analytics? This is my favorite Blazers podcast— Pelton’s analysis is great, Ben does a great job asking good questions and making good points, and there are usually some funny moments.

I would give you the hard sale pitch, but...

They tell me this thing is free, so there’s really no sale to be made nor commission to be earned. Consequently, I scrapped the powerpoint presentation I was working up for you and and cancelled catered luncheon.

I can tell by the tone of your post that your time is more valuable than most, but since it won’t cost you real or play money, maybe you could just give it a listen, huh? Or don’t.

Very well thought-out.

It was a serious question though. I do value my time. I really appreciate Ben taking the time to do these. I’m just trying to figure out (without listening) what they talk about on these podcasts which hasn’t already been discussed ad nauseam here on front page and fan posts. That’s all. My response wasn’t meant to be a knock on Ben or his work at all. It’s just everyone seems to have a podcast or a blog these days.

Sorry for the "...."

I guess what is in the wingcast that isn’t in anything else is the analysis and comments from a basketball insider, exec, and stat pioneer. Peltons input aren’t jus random or opinion , it is solid exec level input (he works doe wnba team after sonics—→ thunder) add to that bens knowledge and sense of humor you get something worth listening to. If u don’t like it, no big deal – maybe podcasts just aren’t your thing. If so, it’s no big deal . But I think these wingcasts provide good info and are very enjoyable – you wouldn’t be wasting time listening.

And yea “everyone has a blog” not sure what that means since this discussion is taking place on a blog . Maybe you meant an "opinio I dunno.

Go blazers

To me it's like the movie Fanboys with stats instead of Star Wars and no cancer subplot

I listen to them because I can tell that Ben and KP2 are friends. Ben seems to “shoot from the hip” with insider knowledge and then KP2 kind of summarizes and rationalizes stuff. (I could probably have explained it better)

Listening to the podcast feels kind of a mix of a morning radio show/stat podcast/two buddies talking podcast. They are funny, the stat stuff is easy to tune out, and the buddiness is cool.

I don’t know if this particular podcast is a good podcast to sell you on it because the Ben/KP2/Cho dynamic is kind of like Mormon missionary asking a Mormon priest about Joseph Smith. But then when KP2 explains his relationship with Cho, it is silly to expect him to be that critical. (Seems like a good analogy since I don’t think I believe in stats or Mormonism.)

It’s in my top 10 of podcasts and like I said, I thinks stats are fake. Ben’s insider knowledge, KP2’s even-keeledness, and the dynamic of two men that have an obvious loving and endearing friendship makes it worth listening too.

Excellent APD (alchohol per dollar)

The smooth mild taste also allows for an extremely high usage rate. Put those together, and the amount production is outstanding.

Disclaimer: everything I know about basketball I learned on Blazersedge.

It is fun to listen to the webcast because because Ben and Kevin get pretty wild and are not afraid to say just about anything that comes into their heads. They are both very knowledgeable about what is happening now and in the past.

is (WesMath) going to be a better wing defender than Batum on the wing? No, I don’t think so.

Agreed, KP2! Many of the CP3ers have figured that Batum is disposable because of WesMath’s defensive chops. Not so.

no one was saying that

but the difference between CP3 and Miller > the difference between Oden and Okafor and Batum and Matthews.

you might be underrating Oden anx Batum

might also be underrating Miller

either way the equation does show…
CP3 + Okafor < Miller + Oden + Batum
we keep matthews either way, so he should not be in that equation. give up one of Oden and Batum, give Miller plus Bayless plus Przy and anything else not named Roy, LMA, Camby.

by avalancheman on Jul 23, 2010 6:18 PM PDT up reply actions

no, and it isn't close

Miller + Oden + Batum are so much better than CP3 + Okafor that such a proposition can only be an overt attempt at comedy.

Law of Logical Argument

by blacknoiseNW on Jul 23, 2010 9:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Best case scenario maybe.

Unfortunately Miller is old, Oden is injury prone and Batum is still relatively unknown. If Oden can’t stay on the court then he’s not a better center than anyone.

I would be hesitant to do that deal, but I think in the end I would bet on Oden not being healthy. Plus Camby and Joel give you a couple years to try and develop a younger center prospect.

by Nick Van Excellent on Jul 24, 2010 8:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Andre Miller is a poor stylstic fit and Nicolas Batum is vastly overrated nowadays; thus, ...

they’re not the point of contention. Instead, the kicker here is Greg Oden. So, even though I’m all for giving up the farm for Chris Paul, it must be noted that Oden is bigger than the farm. A team of LaMarcus Aldridge + Brandon Roy + Chris Paul won’t win a championship against a team led by Chris Bosh + LeBron James + Dwyane Wade — while the current version of the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dwight Howard led Orlando Magic would also be triumphant — therefore, Oden should unquestionably be off the table in trade talks involving CP3.

by AK1984 on Jul 24, 2010 7:18 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah, clearly it's a debatable proposition.

and I think we are basically on the same page here as shown in the other thread, except we come to different outcomes. It’s a very tough call, IMO.

I must weigh in, though now that I know Ben doesn't read the comments, it seems even more meaningless than the rest of my life.

1. Whereas I do usually listen to these, I haven’t check this episode out yet. Haven’t had the time.

2. I am a fan of the podcast. Usually pretty good stuff, quite entertaining.

3. KP2 should now be promoted to KP1. Don’t know if anybody else has suggested this.
