Oden Trade = Crazy Talk

Please, stop it with the trading Oden talk.  When Oden is playing, he is dominant.  Look at any of your favorite stats, be it Adj +/-, PER, ORating, DRating, etc...  And this is basically as a rookie.  You cannot trade that away - even for Chris Paul.

Think about it like this.  The difference between Chris Paul and Andre Miller is not as large (and i would say it is not that close) as the difference between Oden and Okafor.  And people want to add Batum and half our roster on top of it all.  I don't get it.  That is almost a playoff team we would be trading.

Oh, and while Paul gets a lot of steals, other than that his defense is not that great.

I am sure we could get much better value going after other players (Devin Harris, Iggy etc...) and maybe be able to dump LMA at the same time.

That is all.

Nobody wants him

and we don’t want to trade him.
So why even mention it?

I'm gonna be the only A-hole that owns a Nic Batum jersey that doesn't live in France. Awesome.

That is the big question though.

WHEN Oden is playing, he is effective I wouldn’t say DOMINANT. But the problem is, he is RARELY playing.

by RipCityRoyCity on Jul 22, 2010 9:05 PM PDT reply actions

When Oden is playing

his defense IS dominant and his presence alone on the offensive end is enough to change the game.

So what?

All we need is a little bit of luck, and get Greg HEALTHY for the playoffs…
You saw what Boston did – finish fourth, and get healthy. This team, as constructed now, if healthy during the playoffs, can win it all.

But that is only because Greg provides the defensive stability you need to bang with the best teams. Also, you always want to construct your roster to beat the best teams in the league. To keep even with LA, we need our bigs. To have an advantage over Miami, we need our bigs.

If he rarely played during the regular season, but was healthy for each playoff run during the next decade, we should win a couple of titles.

And I would say dominant. Absolutely.

Absolutely agree

that you gut the team for Paul at your peril; but it’s a requirement to negotiate for the best possible deal. That includes making the calculation regarding Greg Oden. Przy and Camby make it possible that Oden is included with Batum, Miller and other chips. That sounds pretty reasonable when you get right down to the facts. No one much will miss Greg Oden because he has so few games under his belt. No one much will miss Miller because he’s a journeyman. And the minute people get a close-up of Chris Paul they’re not going to miss Nic very much either. Once you start throwing in additional young players though, it starts getting harder to swallow. 4, 5 or 6 for one is a stiff test for any owner but PA’s a crazy dude when it comes to wheeling and dealing. Then you get into taking bad contracts in return and….. Oh boy, it’s little dizzying.

I imagine

a large number of people who have purchased season tickets since the Oden pick would probably care…

Also, someone said it on another post, there is no point in having a rock star point guard on an exclusively jump shooting team which we would have if you trade oden, Camby and Pryzbilla..it is just insane and represents a setback for our title hopes. it would be insane…

Not me!

I bought the day we got the #1 pick, and I’m going to be a season ticket holder as long as Greg is on the team, because he can bring us a title.

by Visionary2 on Jul 23, 2010 9:21 AM PDT up reply actions

I don’t imagine that most of those people love a great big man, and specifically want to watch Oden operate. They bought tickets because they thought the team was going to be better (which it has, although mostly for reasons other than Oden) and it’s more fun to watch winning basketball. If Chris Paul makes the Blazers better, I don’t think those people would care that they didn’t get to watch Oden specifically.

by inroywetrust on Jul 23, 2010 7:44 AM PDT up reply actions

I do!

I love watching Greg beast on opponent’s big men, causing them to foul him, and then swatting away their shots…

I LOVE watching Greg in the low post! And he doesn’t even have any moves yet!

I would love to watch CP, too, but don’t think the Blazers win a title without Greg.

by Visionary2 on Jul 23, 2010 9:22 AM PDT up reply actions

Like Me

If they trade Oden for Chris Paul, I will stop being a Blazer fan and go back to being strictly a football fan. I will give up my season tickets next year. Um has anybody counted teh number of championships the elite PG in the league have?

I think it is three and they all belong to Tony Parker. Chris Paul = 0, Deron Williams = 0, Steve nash = 0.
Heck…how many conference finals have they been to? Not many of those either.

Wake Up, This is not the position of need.

KEEP GREG FREAKING ODEN PLEASE!!!

Really, I can’t take the idea of sending a team to NO for a player who played half a season last year and has demonstrated that he is disgruntled. The team we are supposed to sending is three of our current starting five. AND Rudy, who could start for a few teams in this league. And Freeland. And a draft pick???

Wow. Too much. Waaaay too much.

I could see Miller (who would not be pleased playing behind Paul, anyway), Batum, Rudy and Joel, and if they wanted Freeland. I could even see a pick.

That’s all folks!

I agree, Lao Tzu

Let’s remind ourselves that Chris Paul comes with a short contract and a group of advisers – the Lebron James management team. Do we really want to give away so much to get involved with that?

Yeah, it's crazy

the way some Bedgers value our young guys at the level if Paul, Iguodala, Harris or Parker is odd. In the past I thought maybe it was just a little good-natured homerism but now I’m not sure. We’ve got Roy and everyone else is support. We badly need one of those guys to get to the next level.

by oregonslee on Jul 22, 2010 11:17 PM PDT up reply actions

well

Paul may be better, but what is better one season of Paul or many more years with guys we already know can perform for us.

Paul is great, but with his contrract length and the fact that 2011 is likely a lockout season, well…

Paul will help LMA and Oden, that’s why we need him. If we manage to keep Roy, LMA and Oden and get Paul then I am for it. Everyone else is movable.

If we move Oden and half the roster to get Paul then we are pretty much NOH last year. We have to have those 4 to be a contender if it’s possible

"Dump LMA"? Are you kidding?

He’s a half-step beneath the All-Stars and his contract is suddenly relatively cheap.

PLUS CP3 is on the record saying if he came to PDX it would be to PLAY WITH Roy & LMA. I doubt any other all-star level player feels differently.

And man, Devin Harris is barely a step up from Miller. If at all. One-dimensional shoot-first penetrator.

by Marvin100 on Jul 22, 2010 10:23 PM PDT reply actions

I would trade Oden in a heartbeat

IF had have some sort of guarantee that Chris Paul would be around for more than a year after a trade. Unfortunately, I don’t see Paul coming to Portland long-term, making Oden a better investment. At least he wouldn’t be a one year rental.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.—Dune

my only iss is we wont have any money to pursue another big to replace him

if we go out and somehow get shaq for 2 years great but that leaves us with a Great 2 yr window. after that we have no money to replace any of our aging centers. that said if we realistically look at how many games greg and okafor are going to play in the next 2 years, okafor may still put up alot better numbers than greg. i would like to keep andre as a back up to cp.

by Captain fruit on Jul 22, 2010 11:14 PM PDT reply actions

Not that I;m for it but

Shaq may play for us if we gave him the BAE. For the record, I do not want to trade Oden. But if it happened.

Paul
Roy
Batum/Matthews
LMA
Shaq/Camby

That is potentially a dangerous squad, depending on who is traded. Title this next year? Maybe, no dynasty though.

by dpnim on Jul 23, 2010 10:53 AM PDT up reply actions

Ultimately next year is the final exam for Oden

Here’s the grading system in my eyes given that next year will be his 3rd year. No excuses.

A=playing at least in the post season almost 100% physcally and being competitive with Lakers in WCF (or whoever is in the WCF)
B=playing at least in the post season and role playing his way for us past the first round of playoffs
C=playing at least in the post season and role playing his way for us to be competitive in the first round
D=gimping in post season getting 10 minutes a game
F=Not playing in post season

First 3 years were Fs guys. Big fat F. You cant have 4 Fs and still deserve to play in the greatest league of all sports. Hang up the sneaks and go to dental school time if you get 4 Fs.

1st year was preventative surgery.

No injury occurred. It was preventative. I’m surprised people don’t remember that. The FO, trainers and coaches elected for that to happen. I discount the first year because he had no control over that decision.

by dpnim on Jul 23, 2010 10:59 AM PDT up reply actions

Call it what you want

He was hurting therefore they did a study and found what they did which prompted microfracture surgery. He didn’t play all season. That’s an F or at best an Incomplete. Or he was ‘held back’. I’m already tired of my analogy.

agreed

I think Roy, Wesley, Batum, LA, and Oden is a pretty good starting five. Three defensive guys and two prolific scorers…that can play defense when they want.

I say start with RAMBO 1 and put the game away with RAMBO 2

RAMBO 1
Miller
Roy
batum
Aldridge
Oden

RAMBO 2
Roy
Matthews
Batum
Aldridge
Oden

This is a difficult call

A Pryzbilla/Miller/Oden for Paul/Okafor trade would hurt like an SOB … but if that’s all we have to give up, I still might be willing.

1. Paul is the best point guard in the league, period.

2. The Hornets are not going to move Paul unless they can move Okafor with him. We cannot build a big enough package to balance that unless we include Camby or Oden, and Camby’s on a two-year deal so they might not want him.

3. Oden has the potential to be the best center in the league. He also has the potential to be like Jonathan Bender, so banged up and broken down that he’s out of the league before his prime.

4. Yes, Okafor has underachieved and yes, he’s overpaid, and he’s had some injury problems of his own. But he’s a perfectly serviceable starting NBA center when he’s healthy. A lineup of Paul, Roy, Batum, Adridge and Okafor is better than a lineup of Miller, Roy, Batum Aldridge and half Oden half Pryzbilla/Camby. I know it’s not fair to assume Oden will get injured, but he’s developed a pretty good track record at this point.

5. On the other hand, if Oden does stay healthy and does develop like we think he will, he’ll be much easier for us to hold onto long-term than Paul. And his game, generally speaking, is also a better fit for the other personnel on the roster.

6. And it does seem like dominant big men win more titles than dominant point guards, although there are exceptions both ways (Luc Longley, Isaiah Thomas) and the NBA does seem to be shifting in favor of the latter.

I just don’t know. I’ll put my faith in Cho and the Blazers player evaluation team to make the right choice.

by Charon on Jul 23, 2010 10:23 AM PDT reply actions

All that being said

The people suggesting a straight-up swap of Roy for Paul do not understand the long-term implications of such a trade, how much Roy means to this franchise or even what New Orleans would want to accomplish in any deal for Paul.

by Charon on Jul 23, 2010 10:31 AM PDT up reply actions

dump LMA..

no way. you speak of him as if hes a shawn kemp or something. we wont know until THIS season if we overpaid him

My Worst Nightmare!..

Three years from now in the NBA finals:

The Miami Globetrotters with LeBron, Wade, Bosch…and CP3 at PG

vs.

The New Orleans Hornets with Greg Oden Dominating the Middle and Nic Batum locking down on D and scoring inside and out!

That would be more then I could take…

yeah on second thought I dont want someone like Chris Paul

sure he will dominate while playing for us but he seems a really complainy type and will bolt at one instance

WITH ODEN ON OUR SIDE

the more you think about though the more this point of view makes sense

Paul is only here for 2 years and one of those is likely mostly a lock out season.

He is not worth what it would take for just 1 year.
