Batum, Miller, Bayless, Przybilla around there I’m okay but not ecstatic about the trade. CP3 is a GREAT basketball player, but hes only a PG, and not a defensive one. Defense wins championships. Not Defensive?

CP3 averages 2.4 steals per game for his career and owns the record for most consecutive games with at least one steal at 108. He’s one of the best defensive PGs in the league. And he’s also not just any PG. PGs are NOT expendable when they average 20+ points and 10+ steals per game. He’s an MVP type player when healthy (that part is a bit dicey with him though). MVP-type guys like him are ones you go get by any means necessary if they’re available.

Not better than Oden... Just too valuable to trade...

I understand pessimists wanting to cut the ties and trade Oden, but totally disagree with them… The dude is barely of legal age… He could easily turn things around and have a decade of dominance ahead of him.

Nic is not more valuable than Oden, but if you think defense wins championships, then you want to keep a guy like Nic. He has also shown much progress each year he’s been here. His length is what people like. Guys with long arms make great NBA defenders…

The problem is, will NO make a deal without Nic or Greg? Now remember, Monty is down there now, so he obviously knows our personnel as well as we do… and he must have some targets in mind, and given all the time he spent working on Nic’s shot, and Bayless, I think, those guys are probably in his sights…

I still think this can get it done: Miller, Pryz, Rudy, and Camby….

by Visionary2 on Jul 24, 2010 9:32 AM PDT up reply actions

If we can do Camby instead of Oden or Batum....

Cho becomes the GM of the year. Although it would be even better if they could sell Bayless and do a: Miller, Pryz, Rudy, and Bayless trade. Although I’d be fine with the former. But if I were GM, I wouldn’t do Oden or Batum, cause defense does win championships.

According to Fletcher Mackel's blog

The deal would be:

Chris Paul & Emeka Okafor to Portland (if CP3 is traded a team HAS to take Okafor and his horrible contract with him!!!!!)

Greg Oden, Rudy Fernandez, Nicolas Batum, Andre Miller, The rights to Joel Freeland and a 2011 or 2012 1st round draft pick to New Orleans

This is too much, in my opinion; even for CP3. Willing to give up Oden OR Batum, but not both.

Keep Oden

The whole attraction for me with getting CP3 is having him throw lobs to Oden all day… I mean the guy made Tyson Chandler look good, imagine what he’d do for Oden. Not to mention that the whole reason we’re considered the biggest threat to the Lakers by many is that we have the length and size to match up with them. I’d give up batum, rudy, bayless, miller, pryz, and picks, but leave the big guy out of it.

by ozqb3 on Jul 22, 2010 12:34 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

What if it came down to Oden?

What if it got to a point where it was very simply this: if we want CP3 then we have to trade Oden + Batum. If we don’t trade Oden + Batum, then no trade. What would you do then? Tough decision, I know.

In other words, when we hear the PDX has the best pieces, those are 2 pieces they’re talking about, primarily.

by zbrum on Jul 22, 2010 12:43 PM PDT up reply actions

I would not be willing to give up on G.O.

I’ve got way too many hopes and dreams tied up in him to have it all thrown away now. I want Greg to succeed SO badly I can taste it, and my brain is hardwired to believe that as Greg goes, so go the Blazers.

CP3 is a proven star, but in the end, fandom to me doesn’t require a championship. I love the Blazer’s story, and I’m happy to follow it to its conclusion WITH Greg Oden. If you ask me if I’d trade Oden for Durant I’d laugh at you.

by levelhed on Jul 22, 2010 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions

This

Added to the fact that I’m a firm believer in the “defense wins championships” school of thought. If we give up Batum/Oden, we go from being potentially one of the most intimidating defensive teams in the league (pending an improvement in our defensive strategy) to being a fairly bad team defensively.

Matthews may be a good wing defender, but . . .

       he’s not a SF. He’s 6’5", 220 with a 6’8" wingspan. He’s not going

He's made a lot of proven fouls.

He was only coming along just this year before he blew out his knee. Who knows how strong he’ll be and if he’ll rely on fouling and such when he gets back on the court? We have no idea. And he’s in the last year of his contract, entering a CBA year, etc. etc. etc…. I do agree that it would be a bad idea to trade both Oden and Batum because we need youth at one of those positions. Camby’s just a backup, a good insurance policy and someone we can bring in off the bench. Not someone we want to rely on for several minutes a game, and same goes for Okafor.

I think the biggest thing most other teams can offer is capspace. I posted this earlier, but capspace > expiring contracts since you save $ NOW, not next year.

I think Blazers will want Okafor because they will almost certainly lose 2 of: Oden, Prz & Camby in the deal.

I think many teams will want Rudy (Bulls? Knicks? even the Hornets?). That’s the easiest part of the deal.

by zbrum on Jul 22, 2010 3:18 PM PDT up reply actions

but no one here is going to have that inside info, I do think that a 3rd team with capspace (probably in the East) will have to be brought into the deal to make the salaries work

I doubt NO is going to cut off the deal if we say Oden, Roy, and Aldridge are untouchable. The rest of

DO NOT GIVE UP ODEN!!!

I would pain me greatly to lose Batum, but now with My Dear Sweet Wesley it makes it a little easier (although we do lose Batman’s length – but gain Wesley’s toughness) But we cannot lose GO, not even for CPDX3 (New Nickname – you read it here first!) We still have the rookies we could send too and nobody has mentioned it but if the Blazers are so high on Eliott Williams (and Monty would be aware of this too) why not include him as a sweetener?

This has been mentioned. Perhaps the Blazers drafted Babbitt and/or Williams because the Hornets valued them highly?

On this same note...

Is it possible that Wes Matthews, apparantly duplicating many of Batum’s talents, was signed because we had this deal wih NO in mind, and Monty said Batum was a must have, deal breaker?

(Or, perhaps Monty likes Wes Matthews?)

Who TF knows… but the Blazers certainly can put a fine package together… I still think we can do it without sending EITHER Batum or Oden out…

Pryz, Dre, Rudy… Those 3 are the obvious guys to include, to me, for salary matching reasons, and because NO will love the $14M next year when PRyz and Dre come off the books. I really think they can sell their fanbase on Rudy being exciting to watch, too…

Then, if they want to get rid of Okur too, we could add Camby… Hope Monty likes Marcus for some leadership skills…

I’d deal a rookie that Monty liked, too, if he wanted.. Throw in some Euros, draft picks, and millions of cans of SPAM, whatever it takes to get it done…

This lineup would be compitive with anytbody, including LA and Miami:

5: Oden, Okafur
4: LMA, Pendy, Babbit
3: Batum, Dante, (Matthews/Babbit)
2: Roy, Matthews, EW
1: CP, Bayless, AJ, Mills

The trade also opens up 2 more spots on our roster to get another big and maybe a 3-pt bomber type. But that roster has defense, speed, youth, athleticism…. even Nate couldn’t screw this up…

I'm with you all the way...

…if N.O. trades CP3, they’re definitely in rebuilding mode, and probably desperate. And I’d rather the Blazers stay loaded on the frontline (a lesson that comes from long and painful experience-I’m old enough to remember the Moses Malone fiasco). I still believe Greg is the answer long-term: age and/or contractual matters mean Joel and Marcus will contribute less and less even in the very near future. And Greg’s injuries have seemed much more obviously freakish in nature than the painfully chronic injuries that Walton and Bowie suffered. I agree-Batum and a fair number of other players could be in play in this deal, but I’d veto anything that would take from the long-term and deep core of this team.

by Modal Rounder on Jul 22, 2010 4:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Why....

Why is any giving credence to what some sports anchor from NO is saying? Did you happen to see any of the other trade possibilities he has on his site? He has zero basis or insight into anything he is saying.

by MusicCityBlazer on Jul 22, 2010 3:04 PM PDT reply actions

If I absolutely HAD to...

I would give up Greg over Batum in a heartbeat. I just don’t think Greg will ever be a reliable NBA player. He just doesn’t have the body to hold up to an 82 game + season. If giving up Greg is what gets us CP3 then I’ll be glad we at least got something for him. I’m no Greg-hater either; if by some miracle he remained healthy i think he could be the best center in the league. I just don’t see it happening.

by hollywood robinson on Jul 22, 2010 3:44 PM PDT reply actions

Again, we don't necessarily NEED Greg healthy for 82 games...

sure, it’d be nice… But all we really need him for is May and June!

I’d gladly have him be injured (or, ideally, used very conservatively) all winter, then start to bring up his minutes in the spring, so that by the playoffs, he’s ready to go…

But all we need is for this deep and talented roster to get lucky enough to be healthy for a month or two when the games really count…

OPP: add this link to your fanshot-I don't want to spam another CP3 thread.

http://www.wdsu.com/offsidesblog/index.html

that’s the link to his Blog he “tweets” (ugh i hate that word) about later on. It has a hypothetical scenario involving portland giving up rudy, batum, oden and more for CP3 and Okafor, and then NOH swapping David West to ORL for gortat and more.

Please, for the love of all that is holy, please stop using the following: "Book it.", "FTW", "Epic" & "Fail".

...no seriously--stop.

Just to chime in.

I’m not giving up Oden in this deal.

It’s a 2 year rental in our case and you have to approach it that way.

Without Oden and likely Pryz (in the rumored deals) we lose what makes us a very tough matchup vs LA. Our size and length.

by Rudy4three on Jul 22, 2010 6:39 PM PDT reply actions

The fascination of PTB with CP is unbelievable. He is not the promised land. Look how our defense shut him down. He is stoppable and we can do it. So, do not give up Batum or Oden. Move Miller or Bayless along with a “big” and use the money issue to get him if you choose to do so. Bayless or Miller need to go, esp with the development of our rookie selections of this year. May have to move Rudy too as part of the deal though teams will not see him as such a value considering we signed Matthews, not showing much confidence or support. With Martell gone, Batum stays. What you want rudy and wes to be the Batum, not the case, i am sorry. With KP gone, maybe we will realize Bayless is NOT the answer at the one or the two. Move him! Of course, now that Nate has new assistants, who knows what our offensive philosophy will be. Anything better than he could come up with but the philosophy needs to meld with the personnel and Nate is terrible at that. In fact, maybe someone should realize our problem is NOT talent (we are the envy of the league) but Coaching!

I just don't see it happening

CP coming to PDX, especially with Monty in the mix. He’s going to be against deals with the Blazers for several reasons, the least of which is he doesn’t want to get the raw end of a deal and appear to be in collusion. Reminds me of Jerry West sending Gasol to the Lakers (I know he was a GM unlike Monty). But don’t you think Monty will just be saying out loud “don’t deal my best player to the Blazers, I don’t want the scrutiny”…?

Redonkulous!

Why don’t we throw in Camby, Babbitt, Bayless and LMA, too?

by Sheedwasright on Jul 23, 2010 10:39 AM PDT reply actions

Oden AND Batum?

No deal, ever. I wouldn’t give up those two in a package for anyone except LeBron, and even then, I’d think twice about it. Batum and Oden are both good, young, developing, and cheap. If we trade Oden, I guarantee we will never win a championship. He’s the key to the whole thing working.

Prince: This bores me. Is anyone up for a game of basketball?

I Like Portland's "Pieces" Too!

I don’t blame them for wanting Portland’s players, because we have some incredible talent. It;s kind of like saying that you like some of the Laker’s pieces.

We are a legitimate threat to win the Western Conference Playoffs if we are healthy as it sits right now. Adding CP at the expense of decimating our probable starting front line of Oden Batum and Aldridge makes any gain from CP into a massive net loss on defense.
