Spurs Resign R. Jefferson
4 years, 38 million. OK, I get why he opted out of 1 year 15 million now. No way he was going to get a 3 year, 23 million deal next summer (or whenever the lockout ended).
What I don't get is why the heck the Spurs do this? Sure, they will save some tax money this year, but do they really want him tying up 10 million in cap space for 3 more season after this? Maybe non-guarantees or team options will explain it - can't wait to see those.

final season is player option for more than 11 million. Still think it’s a bad move, but it does keep him around for the rest of the Duncan era, and the savings this year pay for Bonner and Splitter. Maybe they figure they should just go all in.

assuming 10.5% raises
contract is 8.375 this year, 9.254 in 11-12, 10.133 in 12-13, and his player option in 13-14 is 11.013

Question
Would you rather pay Richard Jefferson 38.8 million for 4 years (at which time he will be 34) or Wesley Matthews 32.7 million for 5 years (at which time he will be 29)?

Matthews.
Jefferson is not very good. He survives on name recognition alone.
"[S]ince men enjoyed very great leisure, they used it to pursue many kinds of commodities unknown to their fathers, and that was that first yoke they placed upon themselves without thinking about it, and the first source of evils the prepared for their descendants. For, besides continuing thus to soften body and mind, as these commodities had lost almost all their pleasantness through habit, and as they had at the same time degenerated into true needs, being deprived of them became much more cruel than possessing them was sweet; and people were unhappy to lose them without being happy to have them." -Jean-Jacques Rousseau
yeah
can’t believe the general consensus that Matthews is overpaid. He is well worth the money, especially compared to RJ’s deal. WOW
picture me rollin'
Obviously Matthews
Because he plays for the blazers.

Ah, but what about Barnes at like 9 million for 3 years?

But didn't Barnes want
$5 million a year from Toronto? Not sure you can get Barnes for $3 million a year….
Yea, I think he was hoping for $9m over 2 years, but...
It sounds like that kind of money isn’t available to him now. The current rumor is that he’s leaning toward signing with a contender over taking the fattest contract available.

According to A Woj, he's on the verge of signing for $1.7m with LA

I don't get it
he was better at the end of last year, but this is a terrible deal.
I also don’t get why Buford is considered a genius
"its tough to play with one eye, unless you're a pirate." Delonte West
"una canasta a Pau en la cara" Rudy
4 rings will do that for ya
especially for a small market that no “name” FA would ever want to got to, unless you’re winning ’ships
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
His genius is Duncan

lets see, outside of Duncan he drafted Parker with the 28th pick, Ginobili at 57, Hill at 26 (even though they wanted Batum), Blair at 37, and Splitter at 28. That is a pretty good resume alone for why he is considered a genius. And on top of all that, he had the insight to pick up the unheralded Bruce Bowen back in 2001.

Ginobili a great find, as was Parker
Blair is still to be seen (to be seen if he outlasts Duncan), Hill is okay, and Splitter has looked very very good… in Spain. He may be an NBA player, but we’ll see

Who were the Spurs trying to out-bid with this deal?
A week ago, Jefferson was supposedly off everyone’s radar. Now the Spurs sign him to this huge deal? I get that they want to see if he can fit into their system better this year (accounting for last year being a transition season), but…..
Were they concerned that the Knicks were going to offer him $8 million? I don’t get this….
the only thing that makes sense
is that they had a handshake deal with him before he opted out “hey, opt out of that 15 million, and we’ll take care of you on a multi-year deal”. The savings this year allowed them to pay Splitter and Bonner, and they can kick the can down the road a year on the rest of the new deal, since Parker’s salary comes off the books after this season.
That, and maybe they think he will improve in year 2 in their system.

Agreed
I think Hollinger basically insinuated this in one of his recent articles:
Now, after the shadiest summer in league history concluded with those three [James, Wade, and Bosh] all on the same roster (not to mention the apparent shenanigans with James Jones and Richard Jefferson opting out from and then returning to the Heat and Spurs, respectively)

new rule
illegal to opt out of a deal then sign with the same team for less money
