Wespons of Math Destruction
Wow, that is a tongue twister!
I think I’ll stick with Wild Wild Wes(ley) :-)
Welcome to Portland!!!
wonder how disappointed he is to be the 2nd or third guy off the bench?
Behind Bayless & Camby (or even Dante?) He woulda been a starter in Utah…
by blacknoiseNW on Jul 20, 2010 7:37 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
He would be making millions less in Utah, and there is no telling what our roster will do between now and the trade deadline (or beyond when you consider the *fingers crossed* possibility of injury). I think he will do just fine.

He won't be behind Bayless. No way. With the amount of $ they are paying him, he will be
1st off the bench. He will relieve Brandon and may also relieve Batum. He may also play with Brandon and Batum when Brandon is playing the point.
Camby? I don’t think Matthews is a 4 EVER.
Dante will probably be behind Matthews at the 3 also.
matchups
none of these guys except Dante play the same position – but who is the first starter out of the game? For my money, the closest position between starter and 2nd string is point guard, and bigs typically come out of the game before smalls.
Ultimately, the question was rhetorical – because of the position issue – but with real perception issues. This guy is almost certainly not the first guy off the bench if he is spelling Roy/Batum – given that Miller is the weakest link in the starting rotation and Camby will come in for either Oden or LMA before Batum needs to come out.
by blacknoiseNW on Jul 20, 2010 10:58 PM PDT up reply actions
I'd sub Andre out, first
not because he’s the “weakest link” but because I’d like to see the backcourt rotation staggered and have Roy or Miller on the floor as much as possible, while the game is in doubt.

I was anti-Miller to start the season, last year
but I had to admit that Miller remained far more effective than I would have thought. But the idea that Miller is better suited than Bayless for crunch time took a hit in the playoffs.
Age will catch Miller eventually, and Bayless is hungry. I’ve been wrong about Miller before, and will be pleasantly surprised if he keeps up his efficient production – but I’m not holding my breath.

I think they can scale Andre's PT back, at the beginning of the year
he could still be traded, we can’t rule that out
but if the RAMBO lineup finally takes the court in November, I’d think that Miller would play less mpg than he did at the end of last year. He tends to “ease his way” into the season, and after Nate saw how well Dre rolls after January I think he’ll “let Dre be Dre” in Nov-Dec and play Bayless and Matthews more to start the year.

lesson one in how to use depth
scale back starter minutes early so that by playoff time, you still have a team.

especially the big guys
Oden and Camby should be fresher in May if they have Joel rotating in with them all season long
this depth also takes care of foul trouble issues during the post season

Bayless should be the first off the bench...
for the face punch. Him and Roy have had flashes of brilliance on the floor together and I think with more time on the court, those two will serve up some slaughter.
I think WesMath should come in behind Batum to keep a defensive presence on the wing. Oden should be the next to sit after Miller, followed by LMA, Batum, then Roy. So depending on what kind of look Nate is going for Mathews might be the last player subbed in, but I would think he’d either bring him in for LMA if he was going small for a stretch, or stick with putting him behind Batum.
Roy is generally going to be the last starter out, but it would be interesting to see Nate mix it up a little bit by going with the All Stoppers squad (Armon, Mathews, Batum, Dante, Oden). If WesMath can really play defense, Nate is going to find ways to get him minutes—don’t worry about that!
Stealth > Wealth
LMA has usually been the last starter to sub out
there were games where he played into the 2nd quarter before Nate substituted for him, last year. That may change this year, if Camby and Joel both available
I’m a lot more excited about the lineup combinations that are currently available with Portland’s depth this year as compared to last offseason

Me too
Going into last season, nothing was set. JFB, Andre and Blake all thought they had shots at the starting PG spot, and nobody knew what Oden brought to the table (really, it seemed like he brought a new freaking table). There will still be an adjustment period where the guys will have to get used to a titan roaming the floor, but I’m sure they’ll figure it out plenty quick.
This season should get started with a bang.
Stealth > Wealth
Roy's already made the adjustment to playing off the ball
So he shouldn’t have to go through that “feeling out period” with Andre again, this year
LMA’s going to have to get used to sharing the ball more, I doubt he’ll average 15 shot attempts per game like he’s become accustomed to since ‘07-’08
and if there’s a blockbuster trade that could take some time to resort out all of the roles
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
The only way he comes in the game before Bayless
is if Miller picks up 2 quick fouls and Bayless comes in to play the point.
Sorry
The only way he DOESN’T come in before Bayless…
was wondering about that one....thought maybe you and blacknoiseNW were
studying the roster together!!
Matthews will be the first wing off the bench. I think that is all he expects.
Bayless will be the first PG off the bench. Camby will be the first big off the bench. Dante hasn’t been around enough to complain about minutes. Pryz isn’t the complaining type but he is the one who might have cause to complain about minutes.

I think Joel will be happy to be able to play at all!! Will be very very surprised if he can play
this year.
Unfortunately.
You’re probably right. He’s probably not much more than a contract, this year. Would love to trade him, then have him sign as a FA next summer!!
I have a question...does Joel have to pass a physical if he is traded for his expiring
contract?
Since no one has used that qualifier when discussing his expiring contract “assuming Joel passes his physical”…Kind of assumed “no” but don’t really know.
depends on the other team
typically players do have to pass a physical, but the receiving team can always waive the physical, or do the physical to look for something else, and just sign off on the knee injury.
Since any team trading for him likely is looking at him as cap relief at the end of the season, they would almost assuredly waive the physical or sign off on it no matter what. The exception of course would be a team trading for him in hopes of getting him to use down the stretch and into a playoff run. That is a much less likely scenario though, because we aren’t a team that has any reason to just want to dump his salary – we would actually be trying to get a quality player back. And of course another team in a playoff hunt isn’t going to be dumping a quality player to us either. So a trade to a playoff type team would then likely be part of a 3-team deal, which is obviously less likely.

I know you'll appreciate hearing this
When he was asked about how attractive Joel and Andre’s ECs are to other teams, Cho replied
Those are 2 very good players, I don’t look at those guys as just trade chips. They were significant parts of the team last year. Unfortunately Joel got hurt, but Andre had a very good year. So I look at them as assets for our team as players. As far as other teams look at them, I’m sure they look at them as good players, too.
KP is gone, but his spirit of “GM-speak” remains

yeah, I heard him say that live on the radio
and he’s absolutely right. Referring to guys that actually can and do log major NBA minutes merely as expiring contracts is just a joke. We aren’t taking Theo Ratliff or Raef LaFrentz here. We are talking about starting-caliber players. Of course KP or Cho or any other GM worth his salt isn’t going to think of them “just as trade chips”.
It doesn’t mean they are more or less likely to trade them, it just means that they recognize and want to publicly point out that these are productive players.
For the record, I’m not in favor of trading Joel this summer unless it’s in some sort of no brainer not going to happen deal like CP3. Come February, I could be agreeable, depending on the health of Oden and Camby.

Camby off the Bench?
Maybe after Christmas when Oden is in back in the swing of things. Camby will start the first 30 games IMO
On game day, I leave the turkey alone because it is some chemicals in that thing. Nate Mcmillian 11/26/09
We'll have to see how it plays out.
For now I’ll stick with my projection. Hope is a terrible thing to lose.

I'm with you, Greg will be back in the swing of things in September
by preseason there won’t be any doubt who the starting center will be. The only concerns we’ll be hearing from fans and the media will be “how are they ever going to find enough minutes for Przybilla and Camby?”
And I’ll just smile because that’s such an awesome problem to have. I hope it lasts all year

Did Bayless just hear of the Wesley Mathews signing? Or maybe I’m just putting too much into a tweet consisting of four periods.

Regarding his contract...
is this a loophole of sorts for future “LeBron caliber” lottery picks? Matthews was undrafted and will make $9 mil next year. Would a future high lottery pick have the option of bypassing the draft, showing up at a training camp of his choice and opening a bidding war for his contract? I suppose there is some contract language that prevents this? Maybe David Stern’s private army of flying monkeys prevent it? I dunno.
The cowards never started
The weak died along the way
Only the strong survived
They were the Trailblazers
can't really bypass the draft
but you only have to go through it once. if you aren’t drafted that year, you are a free agent after that. In the case of some future stud, someone will draft him. Even if he declares before the draft that he’s “taking his talents to Greece”, some team would still draft him and hold his rights until (and if) he ever decides to return stateside.

Agents love it
when their players, the ones that can actually play, slip under the radar. 2d round and undrafted players are greeted w/ unexpected opportunities because they are not tied to the 5 year rookie scale.
That the Blazers guaranteed Pendy’s contract through the end of this season, it very well could have been an error. Not a huge error, but one that could have been avoided. KP was determined to give ‘his’ players the chance to validate his picking them.
It seems like a lot of money and cap space for The Sweet One. He’s still a prospect, and there is only a small body of evidence that suggests he’s worthy. And he’s another very young guy. I would have thought that McMillan would have struggled against. His defense must be impressive.
Still, if The Sweet One really is all that, and w/ all that future staring him in the face, why would The Jazz let him go? It seems reasonable to assume that the rights to great young players are not available, and certainly not for free.
