If you could be a tea, what kind of tea would you be?
I personally know three different people who are getting married within the next six weeks.
Some people think a JD Book club would be good. Could hearing people talking about some book in the JD be worse than the constant baseball talk?
I don't have as much problem with people talking baseball as others but I do sometimes wish there was a aZ for a whole thread.
Have I babbled long enough yet??

I watched Jurrasic Park a few days ago
it ages well. The effects don’t stand out as bad…for the most part they looked just as good as the effects you see today.
Why are we only concerned with the median temperature?
Why not the mean? It makes more sense with ratio continuous data.
I contest that temperatures are not continuous, particularly throughout the day, but driven by extremes.
Also, Fahrenheit is not a ratio scale measure. It’s interval. There is no true zero in F or C temperature scales so you can’t compare ratios.

it is of course interval data. However, even with interval data it is most prudent to use the mean unless there are massive outliers in which case, yes, it is best to use the median.
Additionally, temperatures are continuous because continuous data is data that can be infinitely divided (e.g. weight , distance, and time) as opposed to categorical data, which cannot be infinitely divided (e.g. # of people in a room).
But how is temperature during the day distributed?
I’ll contend that the central tendency of ANY non-normally distributed data is going to be better represented by its median than its mean. I know temperature is theoretically continuous for the reasons you give but is it empirically continuous? Even without outliers, a mean is impacted by any deviations of normality: skew, bi-modality, or just simple gaps in the distribution.
I also argue that without evidence of the normality of a function that the median is always going to be your best conservative estimate of the center.

I would guess that temperature is relatively normally distributed over a 24 hour period
It certainly isn’t bimodal barring bizarre weather activity, and I can’t imagine where the skew would be. It might be a bit leptokurtic in the afternoon, but i would imagine the rise and fall is roughly the same. Even so, you can use the mean due to the application of a sampling distribution rather than a single distribution.
I’m sorry, but the stats part of my brain turns off when I don’t have to take those classes.

In other words, I examine cognitive predictors of addicts, specifically in nicotine, alcohol, opiates, and cocaine.

Caffeine addiction is tought to kick
and thankfully not very harmful.
I quit smoking last year, before smoking cessation medicine was covered by health insurance.
Why it was considered optional rather than preventative I have no idea.
Honestly though, the thing that really kept me on track was the cost of the medicine. It was over $300 for a month, and even though I was spending over $120 a month on cigarettes, it was one pack at a time so it was easier for me to gloss over the cost.
But dropping $360 all at once really appealed to my stingy side, and I was determined not to waste my money by picking it up again. I had smoked for 18 years, and once I stopped I have not had a single one since.

the first couple days are rough, then you run into a time about two weeks later, where you've been so good it's easy to talk yourself into having "just one"
If you can get through that, it’s really more of a matter of readjusting your daily routine to eliminate the psychological dependence. The physical stuff still pops up for awhile, but that goes away too.
I just kept myself super busy, and avoided bars and the smoking area at work during breaks.

My mother quit cold turkey five years ago after having smoked for nearly 30 years. We are all very proud of her. My dad can’t quit smoking cause he drinks too much and ALWAYS smokes when he’s drinking.

I kind of kicked both at the same time.
I wasn’t a raging alcoholic, but I was a drinks every day kind of guy. Eventually I just started feeling like crap all the time, and now my body isn’t that great at metabolizing all that alcohol, so I drink a lot less just to stay comfortable. Every once in a while I like to tie one on still, but it’s pretty rare anymore.

I am using the median as a proxy to describe the temperature throughout the day. It’s very likely for temperature to be skewed positively or negatively throughout the day. Even if the temperature was normally distributed throughout the day, the median would be equal to the mean.

I do the exact same thing
I have an idea for a couple inventions.
1. The Sumforter
A comforter that you can rock in the summer that doesn’t have any insulating value yet gives the sleeper the weight of a regular down comforter. Stay cool, stay cozy.
2. The Chillow
A pillow that stays cool on both sides all night long. No more flipping the pillow on hot nights to get the cool side against your face.

Just watched the Olive Armon Johnson video.
I love his attitude, and the tape with him and Wall was encouraging. He has very nice lateral quickness and is as big as Wall, if not bigger. Very intriguing.

I’m not going to make any stance on the draft picks (williams screams mediocre name wise, babbs may be one dimensional) because of how much I believe in their skills to find quality players.
I think it's a safe assumption that Born and Buchanan had a lot to do with KP's knowledge of draftees

I never ever hear a plane.
I live behind Marina Del Rey, in Mar Vista. Kinda between Venice and Marina Del Rey. Get an ocean breeze, cooler weather, cleaner air, I never ever hear any airport noise (I don’t even think about it, since I’m not that close— the airport just isn’t that far or slow of a drive, even with traffic).
The water is a mile west of me, 405 about 1.5-2 miles east of me. The 10 is 2 miles or so north of me. It’s a good location because rent is cheaper here than Venice or Marina Del Rey and I get the benefits of living in both.

There's some maybe "hipper" areas that I might like in LA
But anything too far east, I hate the weather. TOO DAMN HOT. I am made for bogs and snow and coldness.
Staying near the water is something I prefer. Since I have a corner apartment, I can open the windows and get a nice breeze almost any time.
Though today was really damn hot, and I needed the AC right on me. My body is like a furnace.

In the cartoon

I don’t know. We moved a futon that is on those felt pads. It moves super easy and she wanted to change the position. I walked out to throw something away and I heard her say, “Ouch” and then heard her crying. I walked back into the room and she yelled at me for making her move it on her own. What made me laugh is that when it was in the living room, she moved it all over the place daily.
She sounds like an unreasonable monster.
Probably even has borderline personality disorder.
There is only one known cure—

Who, aside for Andre Miller, do you both adore and abhor with a passion?
We’ve all got guys we like and dislike — since I definitely love me some Greg Oden, yet can’t stand Nate McMillan or Jerryd Bayless — however, it’s difficult to get a read on you ’cause of your singular focus on Miller.
So yeah, I’m curious as to your opinions — yet strictly the strong ones — on a few other NBA players.

I think the only person I hate in the world is Miller
I blame everything from the gulf oil spill to the injuries last year on him.
I love Outlaw as a person so I didn’t mind him on the court as much as others and I know his game is flawed. I don’t really have a favorite player at this point.
I’m not high on Batum because of the Batum-centric fans here and I think he’s injury prone. I’m not high on Bayless because of team-Bayless. Same reason I wasn’t high on Sergio because of team-Sergio.
I’m not a fan of any rookies or players of other teams, but I don’t hate them. I just don’t care.
I just wish it was like the good old days when I was just a fan of the team and everyone involved. I miss being a homer.

We also need a coach who runs all the time, makes his players play lock down defense for 48 minutes a night, and plays solid half court offense.
What about guys like me who advocate a more down-tempo offense?
Of course, I would like to see a strict man-to-man defensive scheme over the constant switching and, moreover, dislike the current half-court offense that’s installed here.
So yeah, 2 out of 3 isn’t bad here.

True, you've consistently been down on rookies.
That’s actually not a bad thing, however, for rarely do rookies make a monumental impact — with Magic Johnson being the main outlier — although each case is unique.
Homerism, however, is a hindrance, as is subjectivity of any kind. I’ve managed to squash my homerism in basketball — albeit not in the NFL or MLB — however, I’m admittedly less than objective regarding players I admire (e.g., Kirk Hinrich) or loathe (e.g., Jerryd Bayless).
I do my damnedest to grasp why I’m biased about some players, though, and attribute that to my keen sense of self-awareness. As a result , I suggest people take whatever I say about a player who I’m invested in personally — such as Mike Miller — with a grain of salt.

It seems like a lot subjective fans have unreal expectations. To me players are who they are and there is no point in bashing them for not being taller or not being Bosh or CP.
I hated Blake’s stupid shot at the end of the Rocket’s game, but I also don’t dwell on it or hold a grudge. I know that starting CP instead of Blake would make the Blazers better and I don’t see the point in dwelling on that as well. While a guy is a Blazer, excluding Miller, I’ll support him and hope he gets better.
I get the feeling hanging out here that folks dwell on numbers and focus on what players can’t do instead of what they can do.

Unlike a lot of fans, I am willing to accept at the start of the season that I’ll be stuck rooting for the players on the roster for the rest of the season. I don’t expect nor hope for unrealistic trades to happen. I accept the players flaws and hope for the best.

I used to watch a lot more NBA games before I got league pass and started hanging out here. I don’t have time to watch other games now and my work hours kind of messes it all up as well.
I think hanging out here has made me not like blazers fans. There is so much hypocrisy that goes on that it is sickening. I’m an a-hole for not liking Miller but it’s OK for others to say horrible things about other Blazers.
I can remember fans calling Kobe a rapist and then complaining that someone made fun of Zach’s Bell’s Palsy. I could go on, but it’s pointless.

My only advice would be to avoid taking low blows at Andre Miller — such as making references to him being a pedophile — but rather knocking him for reasons of merit.
Regardless of whether those are on-court (e.g., lack of long-range efficiency) or off-court (e.g., reclusiveness), go ahead and call him on it. I, however, advise not veering so far off path on the criticisms — with the main example being the one mentioned above already — otherwise, people start to disregard everything you say.
It’s a fine line, y’now. Heck, I know that for a fact. I’ve walked it for a long, long time.

I screwed up the Miller bashing a long time ago, once I realized no one wanted to listen to reason. I would complain about him not being able to shoot the 3 and fans would just say he didn’t need it.
He benefited from not being Blake much like Obama got a huge boost in his first year because he wasn’t Bush.
My over the top bashing of Miller also made fans get protective of him. Heck, even ULC stuck up for him when I bashed Miller a few hours ago.
The pedophile joke was a joke at the bottom of an old JD. And I got banned for it like 3 days later. I think what happened was that someone flagged me and then the mod who banned me capitalized on the opportunity while going through old flags.
I still don’t know why it’s ok for fanpost and mainpage posts to go up that perpetuate rumors and lies about players, GM’s, or trades and then when I make one tiny comment on something that I believe to be true and I get banned. That wouldn’t happen in North Korea or Afghanistan!

or anywhere. Heck, I’ve been banned more often and longer than anyone — even though I’m truly contrite after I’ve made such ill-advised comments — but such is life.
Yet, to be frank, I’m not upset regarding my bans at Lookout Landing or SonicsCentral. Regarding Field Gulls, however, I’m still confused by that ban, but I’m not about to contest it.

A few days before, I asked Dave to ban me until the draft because my Miller hate was consuming me. He said no and then I got banned for something that I thought was pretty trivial. Lord knows I’ve said way worse here.

Getting too caught up in the minutia of each and every detail about a player is not that fun to me. I understand the purpose of doing that, I understand that it is enjoyable for stats type guys, and I don’t begrudge them for that.

Who knows.
Batum got destroyed by Melo once last season. That doesn’t mean he’s not a good defender or even that he didn’t play good defense. It’s hard to tell with those guys.
I did see Matthews in a couple games in the playoffs and I thought he looked amazing, but I don’t really remember him at all from when the Jazz played the Blazers.
I’m very optimistic, but a tiny bit worried that Nate ruins him.

no, that's absolutely true
sometimes even the best defensive performance can’t do anything against a great scorer (Roy lit up Battier in the playoffs last year). But the fact that people see Wes’s playoff performance as the biggest feather in his cap + those numbers + underwhelming +/- numbers are enough to make one suspicious about the idea that he’s a lockdown defender.
Maybe he started out slow?
I know he did a really good job on Granger.
Matthews, in particular, was key defensively. After scoring 16 of his career-high 18 points in the first half, the rookie largely kept Granger under wraps in the second half and was consistently active at the defensive end of the floor.
With Matthews leading the charge defensively, Utah held Indiana to just two points over a key five-minute stretch midway through the fourth quarter

I remember one of those books not because of anything about the storyline but because I gathered at some point that I was deciding the fate of a young Indian (from India that is) girl.

And smarter. These are good ideas. I’ve never been a part of an on-line book club before and I’ve only joined real book clubs when the selections were pre-determined.
Your question on members or books is one I’m not sure about. We (so far I can recall the following people being interested: DTL, GBlaz, cloudy, idol, ffa — anyone else going to jump on board?) could come up with a book and those who are interested can jump in. Or we can find people who are interested in principle and have us all decide together.
When the idea first came up, cloudy suggested Moby Dick to which GBlaz said that was too long. That’s where decisions halted.

How bout Pynchon?
V would be a good book club book since the plot is so dense and crazy. Other suggestions: Master and Margarita, The Power and the Glory, The Savage Detectives, or, if you want something lighter, The Magicians or Jonathon Strange and Mr Norrell.

It’s his own fault he played on the national team while injured. But there are definitely mitigating factors for his performance last year that may not be here this year.
Also, I never pay attention to Marca, which is the primary cause of the “Rudy is drama!” stuff.

This is how I felt about it.
Maybe one day the Memphis Grizz owner will wake up with a horse head in his bed or something. Maybe PA holds deep crazy grudges for this stuff that we can’t even fathom. Something weird happened.
I am pretty sure the doctors were correct to say it would not be advisable for Miles to continue playing basketball which is what they said. I don’t understand why this recommendation that it is not in his best medical interest to continue playing should have retired him. I also don’t understand why he didn’t have to submit to anymore “independent doctor” reviews to return to the league.

I doubt he cares enough about Darius Miles to get a doctor to doctor up a report making his injuries worse than they are.
THAT part, isn’t the problem.
The problem is what defines a career ending injury, and how that is clearly open to interpretation. And how the rules leave us screwed with the loophole of how we gotta pay the contract on the cap space, but we also can’t use the contract in any trades and whatnot.
I doubt Stern is like “hmm, that Miles guy that I never really think about, I think I’ll join in on a conspiracy to screw him over”.
Plus the doctor is approved by the Players Union AND the NBA. I doubt the head of the players union wants to screw over Miles either.

in other news, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is way way fun. it’s even better than the first installment.
the castle at the end of world 2 is one of the best castles i’ve ever played in any mario game.

I so far like the first a little more than the second, but I have a ways to go still
They’re both great.
i think what puts the 2nd one over the top for me is the friendlier interface with the different worlds and galaxies and (the biggest plus) the more frequent integration of sidescrolling sections of games. i love how it shifts from third person to side scrolling during a level.
visually this game (just like the first one) continues to astound me. it’s so fun, so inventive. a really really great game.

no it never saved your lives in #1 either. which annoyed me at first. but they make it really easy to get extra lives anyway so i don’t think it’s a big deal.
that world 2 castle was something else huh? so fun. i just did like 6 or 7 of the comet mission things last night after getting to world 3. some were really easy, some were frustrating.

I also can’t find the comet coin in one level. the roly poly level in world 2, where you first get the rock mario thing. I’ve found it everywhere else without a guide though. It’s really fun, I was gonna only play it on and off as I played RDR, but I’m a little frustrated with RDR so I’m taking a break and now I’m loving SMG2

i think on the one where you’re a boulder, on the very first part where you have to get the goombas to unlock the rock mushroom thing, there are a couple toads hitting a big purple crystal. you roll in to that a couple times and the coin is in there.

I rolled into it twice, which is the usual amount to break things, and figured it wasn’t there. you must have to hit it three times. And I dunno, I just kind of got bored with it for the moment. I still love the game and will go back to it really soon and continue to love it, but I felt I needed a break otherwise I might get burned out on it and not like it. It’s a really big game and I went from not gaming in a long time (I guess I had played AC 2 but that was easy to use as pick up and play style) to playing RDR really regularly.

i see. that makes sense. i powered through RDR pretty quick so that point never came for me. but then the other day i restarted a game to play as a bad guy and after the first session i was thinking, “ok i’ll not play this again for a while.” and then i bought SMG2.

when i worked at a grocery store people would come in with food stamps or something, i’m not sure what, but it was some sort of assistance thing for food. but they only had specific things they could buy, like a dozen eggs, a certain kind of milk, that kind of stuff. they couldn’t just use it for anything.

my point is
that the card subsidizes their living expenses so that their discretionary budget could be used for beer and magazines. if they have that much discretionary money for buying non essential items…then maybe they shouldnt be on the program.

you can get most any food, but not alcohol and non-food stuff. However, the crap they by is often overpriced or unhealthy. A smarter shopper would be able to stretch it more. Plus, if the dude has money for beer and magazines, then he shouldn’t be leaching off the govt.
when i see people on those programs
buying anything but non essentials…or even if they buy top of the line cuts of beef…i tend to get a bit angry. i’m a responsible person, yet even i cant afford to eat filet or halibut all the time. yet people on govt assistance get the luxuries that many others don’t.

i can’t hate on gov’t asst…without it, my family would have never made it.
of course, my parents used it the right way until they could find two steady jobs and didn’t milk it…for all the stupid people out there, there are a lot of families who use it correctly and has helped them. now, our family pay more in taxes than we ever received as assistant

Maybe that's the whole plan...
Allen fired Penn in February to make it look good. Then he “fires” KP after the draft work is pretty much done…..now he’s on an undercover mission to get CP3 for us.

I can’t figure out the western conference right now. There have been so many changes.

But luckily, not many clear improvements.
Kings are intriguing as hell and will be better but prolly a bit away from being a team to worry about… Rockets and Blazers should be better if healthy, and everyone else is the worse or the same.
Spurs get more depth in a good big in Splitter, but I think we’re better if healthy at this stage.

Yao has played way too many games. He has played competitively for China every summer when he isn’t injured. The only way he can rest his body is to get hurt.

at the time he signed the K, nobody would he a viable European player. He flamed out at Bayer Leverkusen in 2004 and was terrible in exhibitions for Bayern Munich this last off-season. He had every reason to believe he was going to retire as an MLS player. Of course, signing a four year contract looks dumb now, however.

Me too. But it's a weird distribution so it's hard to guess the std.dev.
I’m sure the mean is between 23-29 depending on the strength of the skew from the extreme outliers. It’d be amusing to plot some random things like this and compute basic stats if the data was already in a spreadsheet.

Hey GB (and other Japanese film nerds)
I’m on something of a Kurosawa kick, catching up on the parts of the canon I’ve missed. I’ve seen High and Low, Ran, Ikiru, Seven Samurai, and Dreams (and preferred them in that order). What should I watch next? Yojimbo? Rashomon? Throne of Blood? The Bad Sleep Well?
of the ones you list, i liked Rashomon the best. Throne of Blood and Yojimbo are good too.

that’s tough. If you watch Yojimbo you’re gonna want to see Sanjuro afterwards, but those are both great films. I own, but haven’t actually watched, The Bad Sleep Well, so I can’t say much of that one. Rashomon is awesome and is one of his most canonical films, and I love the original story, so I’d probably go with DTL and Mort and recommend that one. And Throne of Blood is also great, and probably the best rehash of Macbeth I’ve ever seen, but I’ve seen it a lot and don’t love Macbeth as much as most people, so I’m not the best person to defend that film.

i thought some of the best stuff about Throne of Blood was the camera work. the story is pretty rehashed and straightforward. he doesn’t do much new with the material, but the camera work is pretty great.

What if the NBA
kept the age requirement to play in the NBA but let people chose to enter the draft and play a year in the NBA-DL, drop max salaries and Veteran Salaries a 4 or 5 perfect and used that savings to put more into developing their own D-league farm team.
