Tomasson: LaMarcus Aldridge Will Not Play In Turkey
Chris Tomasson of NBA Fanhouse writes...
-------------------------
Portland forward LaMarcus Aldridge has dropped out of next week's Team USA training camp here, and any Olympic hopes he might have for 2012 have been severely damaged.
"He just decided that he didn't want to do it,'' USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said in a phone interview Wednesday morning with FanHouse. "He's not going to come.''
-------------------------
This is somewhat surprising and a little disappointing, as I tend to fall in with the crowd that believes the competitive atmosphere around Team USA would serve Aldridge well.
Does this decision diminish LaMarcus Aldridge's reputation in your eyes?

Yes, I do think slightly less of him.
It’s an honor to represent your country and his excuse sounds a little flimsy. I think he could learn some good habits from some of the dudes there.

well
after last season I really want these gus healthy for us, the less organized ball they play the better rested.
The key is if they keep their conditioning up so they are ready for camp, that is all I care about at this point. I would prefer if all our guys would take this summer off frankly.

One the one hand, less wear and tear on LMA during the summer could be a good thing in the long run. OTOH, nobody really knows what he does to prepare during the offseason except that his post moves haven’t really improved that much over the past 2 years
So maybe he’s hanging out with Andre a little too much?

great idea. Let's get more guards that can't dish dimes.
LMA’s decision was a bummer though. I think everyone from redeem team except for CP3 who was injured, kicked it up a notch or two last year. More proof that LMA is an underachiever?

It's should be well understood by now that LA is a private guy.
He’s not shave ice frosty like Dre on media day… but whatever his reasons are if they’re not something that would make his agent want him to issue a press release (like an offseason injury or somesuch) then he’s gonna keep it to himself. Team USA is a great honor, but it’s also basically a volunteer 2nd job and while I’d love to see LMA on the squad, it dosen’t upset me that he’s not interested. Maybe my bar is set too low, but not getting arrested, not being a drama queen, and being curteous with the fans is all I think I have any right to ask for.
Like the Whos down in Whoville they did it without boxes or ribbons or bows, they did without centers or posting down low. They won without All-Stars and Spaniards and Frenchmen. They won with old geezers and sub-par defense-men. They won playing rookies from deep off the benches. They won with their grit and their guts in the trenches. And some who observed them have been known to say that their hearts grew three sizes (at least!) on the way. One hopes with their poise and their passion now proven that once they are healthy their game will be groovin'. -- Dave

LMA's private side came out during the BT Smith interviews last season
when asked about fan criticism, LMA said “I don’t really listen to what the fans say, they don’t even know what the team’s strategy is from game to game”
The player from Blazer history that LMA reminds me of the most is Mychal Thompson. Talented, but soft. Played out of position at center because of injuries to the other Blazer big men and the fans thought he was too laid back to ever lead the team to a championship
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
Excellent points
And LMA is right…We fans don’t know crap about team strategy, what he is being asked to contribute, etc…so he should NOT listen to what we say.
I like the comparison to Mychal Thompson. They are both talented big men who are not “bangers”. However, I do see a side of LMA that I really like. He gets PISSED at times and seems to want physical contact. It’s just not his forte. Also, Mychal Thompson went on to win (at least one) championship with the Lakers…Hopefully LMA won’t need to go elsewhere for his rings!
As for playing for Team USA…Everyone’s different. I view playing for one’s country as an honor and an opportunity. I also think he would learn some things and gain confidence by participating. But if your heart isn’t in it don’t do it. The silver lining is that he doesn’t risk injury or fatigue. To each his own.

It's a personal decision.
I do agree that it could have helped him develop as a player. However, he’s smart enough to know that and I trust that he has his reasons for not participating.

btw, I want you to pay particular attention to the hustle stats here,
the blocks and steals and rebounds. Not a perfect way to measure hustle and playing hard, but it’s the closest thing we have in terms of standard box score stats.

LMA doesn't like to stick his nose in there
and his inferior lower body strength causes him to be bodied out of position for rebounds by legit bangers
if he takes the time that he would’ve spend at team USA camp and improves his lower body strength, then all criticism should cease
but if LMA comes back to fall camp with basically the same game and toughness as he’s shown in the last 2 years…then it will be time to start questioning whether he’s still a part of “the core”
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
it's not that he can't,
it’s that he won’t.
If you look at the plummeting block numbers (1.9 per 36 his rookie season, 1.3 year two, 0.9 year three, 0.6 year four), it looks an awful lot like he’s figured out that he can opt out of playing hard on defense and no one in Portland will care.
And the sad thing is he’s right. Look at all the fans still defending the guy here. Joe Barely Cares and Derrick Coleman played a lot harder than LaMarcus does.
by howlingfantods on Jul 14, 2010 10:36 PM PDT up reply actions
I don't agree with that.
He doesn’t flail his arms around like Sabas or contort his face every time he ‘hustles’—he just plays good fundamental ball. He’s durable and fits nicely with a rebounding big like GO. The fans here want him to be Brian Grant and that’s just not his style.

wow, so it's good fundamental ball

you'd think that LMA - wanting to ascend to the next level, would want to play against the best competition
for someone who talks about wanting to be an All-Star and a top tier forward, don’t you think he’d want to spend some of his summer working out with some of the best players in the league?

On the topic: the NBA needs to shorten it’s season and playoffs to make more room for international play. The league worked hard to globalize the game, now it’s time to give players playing abroad time to rest up before and after their respective leagues. At the very least, the NBA should start later after the olympics.

basketball is closer to soccer in it’s global scale than NFL or MLB. The NBA (and it’s many sponsors) benefit greatly from that. Of course, I agree with your proposed number of games any year. Too long—too many meaningless games.

Wait, I hear the national anthem Ben.
Stand up straight and keep an eye peeled for any other slackers.
Now that the 3 Kings run the national team
you can hardly blame the other guys on LMA’s level for backing out. They’re just place holders till the 3 Kings arrive the week befor the plane leaves. Who could possibly trust the organization now the leadership is undermined. Nate needs to think twice before hitching his star to Colangelo and the 3 Kings.
Interesting take
There’s probably some truth to the idea that LMA felt like he would not be part of the final squad or get playing time, etc…so why spend the time and energy? Who knows.
Little disappointed,
I would have really liked to see him playing at that level, It for sure could not hurt his skills or confidence. Plus maybe they would make him take it to the hoop a bit more.
It's his decision and I think it's ridiculous to think less of him for it.
It’s not like he’s doing anything wrong. Look at all of the big names who already said they don’t want to. Aldridge has no obligation to play for team USA. If he feels like he plays enough basketball throughout the year then respect his decision.
You guys don’t always want players playing extra in the summer then slam Aldridge for not doing so? I don’t get this place sometimes.

If he's hurt,
it makes sense to want him to take it easy. As far as I know, he’s healthy. A lot of the big names that dropped out did so either because they weren’t 100%, or they were free agents that figured they’d be too tied up with negotiations to give it their best.
The only decent reason for him to sit out would be that he could have been forced to play out of position because of how few bigs Team USA fielded.
Stealth > Wealth
The problem isn't that he doesn't want to do it
The problem is that he committed to do it, then changed his mind without a lot of notice (~1 week?) and gave a lame excuse.
Personally, I don’t care if he was a part of the team or not. I do have a problem, though, with the fact that he backed out of a commitment to his country in the laziest way possible.
Good point
Somehow though I’ll give Lamarcus enough credit to think that he gave a more valid and indepth reason than simply “nah I just don’t wanna”.

This.
Everyone worries when a Euro goes home to play national ball… but with Team USA, it’s different. That’s our country, our national pride. Mix in the general malaise about the gap between LMA’s perceived ceiling vs. current output, and you have an enditement of his character that is effectively applying a double standard to him that doesn’t apply to the Euros.
Conversely, while I think most would love to see B-Roy on Team USA, many have said that he shouldn’t risk his health… same argument as the Euros. In B-Roy’s case though it’s a risk vs. reward argument. Brandon is so meaningful to the team, and it would be such a heartbreak to us if he were seriously injured playing for Team USA that many would rather he take a pass. LMA is seen as less valuable than B-Roy… so therefore he is more “expendable” and should be free to go play for the national team.
I feel like this puts LMA in something of a Catch-22 situation with respect to fan expectations, and I think he deserves better than that.

…because playing on our nations “All-Star” team would almost make him a shoe-in to be an All-Star. Plus: Play with the best to learn from the best!!!!
dunno
With Blazers getting injured right and left, I think it may be reasonable for him to forego it.
If it improved his game enough that the benefit to the Blazers of him participating outweighed the risk of him getting injured, then it would be advisable for him to do it. I think that is not an easy call to make.

Do we kill Roy for declining every year?
No, we don’t. I’m sure people will point out that Roy has injury issues. I’m sure people will point out that Roy doesn’t have as much to prove. However, I still don’t see much of a difference. Aldridge has played through as many nagging injuries as Roy in the past years; Roy has simply had a couple more significant injuries too. I believe Roy has declined the invitation one year to rest…and was applauded for it.
I don’t get why people hate Aldridge for this.

RE: poster
How has Roy declined every year? Solid rookie year, the perpetual allstar and all nba teamer. If anything he has platued(sp?) where most players platue(sp?) And the reason Roy was appluaded for sitting one out is that he is an unquestioned star and no longer need to prove anything. LMA on the other hand still has alot to prove. His off season work ethic is a joke and this is yet another sign that he seems to think things will just “come” to him.

I meant that he has declined the invitation to USA basketball.
He is obviously not getting worse every year. Sorry for the confusion.
Roy declines every year because of injury concerns
Aldridge made a commitment to join the team and then backed out at the last possible moment, with no excuse but ‘idohwanna’. The fact that you can’t can the difference between this is amazing. Its like the difference between calling in sick to work because you’re sick and calling in to work to tell them you won’t be in because you’d rather hang out in the sunshine and work on your tan.

So is this team for the WCs or the Olympics?
Is basketball in the Olympics the same as soccer in that the squads are largely under-23 national teams?
It's for the 2010 world cup in Turkey (beginning late August)
And then by extension, most of the players will be re-invited to play for the 2012 Olympics in London by Colangelo.
Maybe think of it a bit as building goodwill, like Kobe & Co. did by playing in a way more meaningless FIBA Americas tournament to even qualify for the Olympics and World Championships a few years ago. (the equivalent of the European championship, only with way less competition aside from Argentina, Brazil and maybe Puerto Rico).
And no, most countries send their best pros to the Olympics for the basketball tournaments. Only the US for a while sent college teams (also in hockey) because the pros didn’t care and/or it collided too much with their seasons. But after some bitter losses, that has turned in recent years. In basketball with the 1992 Dream Team, though they did send some inferior versions of that afterwards. In the 2004 Olympics and the following and preceding world championships Team USA looked really bad and failed to win, prompting the management of Team USA to recruit the biggest names to play for them again. Which worked in 2008, beating Spain in an interesting final in Beijing. But now, apparently none of those players has signed up again for 2010. I would assume they talked about it, much like they talked about where they wanted to go as free agents. Some felt mistreated by Colangelo for not guaranteeing them another spot for 2012 after all the work they had already put in.
FIBA ball is a lot different from NBA ball
Everything from the way the court is organized (the 3pt line to the key) to the way defense is played, is different. You can’t just round up a group of NBA stars and expect them to beat international competition without trouble. The players need to (a) learn to play FIBA ball and (b) learn to play as a cohesive unit before they can have success.
He's a communist I tells ya !
Meh. Why risk ones health being a tackleing dummy for a bunch a guys who don’t even need to pratice anyway? Besides isnt Team USA basically Miami now?

Hopefully
He doesn’t want to do it cuz he wants to keep doing individual workouts and focus on specifics parts where his game needs improvement to help OUR team win. Let’s give our guy the benefit of the doubt. I remember many fans being upset that Nic played last summer and was unable to play for us the first part of the year.
Nic was hurt and shouldn't have played.
LMA’s healthy and just doesn’t want to.
Isn’t the team being coached by Coach K? If that’s the case LaMarcus just gave up the chance to be coached by the best, which negates any individual goals. Who knows what Coach K would have spotted and worked out?
Stealth > Wealth
I think
Preparing yourself for a role on an Olympic Team is different then working on individual things that he needs to improve. Maybe, Lamarcus is in contact with Coach K and already has an idea of how he’ll be used. Just sayin.
I dunno, man
At the very least, just go to the freakin’ mini-camp. It’s a chance for him to work-out with some pretty top-notch competition, and it’s not that far to travel from either Portland or Dallas, wherever he’s at right now. I was excited and proud when he got added to the roster. As an American, he should be giving some effort for his country, regardless of what his individual goals are.
Plenty of time for that
The guy is what, right around 24 yrs old. There will be plenty of time to make Olympic teams especially if he continues to work. I don’t have any insight as to why he doesn’t want to join, but neither does anyone else. All I’m saying is if he wants to spend his off season getting stronger and working on his own weaknesses then I’m okay with that.
6'11 and can shoot it anywhere inside the 3pt line at a 50% clip
I’m sure sooner or later, he’ll get another invite.
But that wasn't the Olympics.
This is the Olympics, where we get to shine a healing light on the rest of the world and show them how freedom and TV programming go hand in hand.

Rather disappointing. I would love to have Roy and LMA win a title with Team USA to see how it feels and works
And with all those guys from 2008 declining their invitation, LaMarcus would have had a true chance to get on the roster as a big, and that would have been valuable both from a learning and a PR standpoint. Amare who people always give a bad rap for being egoistic signed up for Team USA this year.
Watch out for OKC to send 3 players now (Durant, Westbrook, Green or Harden), and people will love them for it. Speaking of Love, he and Lopez should also be locks now.
The "Decision"
Hold the phones. I hear thru reliable sources that LaMarcus has set up a 1 hour program on ESPN to tell us all why he is not going to play for Team USA. I’d tell you more, but I’ve got to go buy pretzels and invite some friends over for the attendant party…
Good News
LMA has his head on straight and his priorities right. Why risk an injury during a slew of exhibition games. Just look at Batum last summer.
NBA careers are justifiably more important to players. And careers are short.
The U.S. should field it’s team from guys trying to make an NBA team or trying to impress and crack an NBA rotation. Why should a guy who is going to play 82 to 100-plus games a year blow out their knee in an exhibition?
Seriously?
The best competitors and great players have all played for their country since the Dream Team. This is a huge opportunity for LMA, and the chance to get some national limelight right before his first All-Star appearance (I’m still optimistic). Coach Nate should call him up and chew him out for being a quitter and weakling (I don’t think this is true in general of LaMarcus, but in this instance, it is). The guy has no major health problems that preclude him from playing, and has the chance to work with and learn from some of the greatest coaching minds and to work-out with some really solid fellow players. There’s more risk of getting hurt in offseason work-outs than a few exhibition games.
Yeah, I'm serious
I don’t like All-Star games either. There aren’t a lot of positives at the All-Star game.
I think this would be a better opportunity for guys who are trying to make an NBA team and who don’t get as much mileage during the regular season. I’m particularly glad that BRoy has wisely chosen not to participate in these exhibitions in the past and that he sat out the All-Star game last year.
Yeah, but there's no hard feelings
We know you can’t stand him and the fans always get the last word on the player to love or hate. For me it’s Rudy. I can’t wait for him to face Dwight Howard again. He won’t be dunking on Howard again. Howard’s going to let him know what happened with Ariza was just patty cakes compared to what’s coming.
Eh. He just continues to confirm my impression of him.
I’ve pored over far too many defensive possessions where LMA clearly dogs it for me to ever expect much effort or heart out of this guy.

while it may not be totally fair, the reasons (at least for me) are: 1) Roy has come a lot closer to reaching his potential and 2) Roy has been dealing with more injuries.
I’d like to see Roy play USA basketball also though. Both those guys need to learn something about competing hard on each and every possession, even on that annoying defensive end.
I have that double standard and part of it has been injuries to Roy. At some point I want him healthy. This hasn’t been an issue for Aldridge.

Roy declines the invitations (ostensibly due to health concerns)
LMA accepted the invitation, then backed out at the last minute with a flimsy excuse. Calling in sick to work isn’t a problem, but calling in “sick” because you want to sleep in is.
I think that reflects on Aldridge
There are those with talent who are driven. There are those with talent that aren’t.
There’s an Ali quote that I haven’t been able to find. The summary is that it takes talent and will to win, but mostly will.

I hope he just realized he wasn't going to make the team, and decided to save some time
but if this is him just admitting he doesn’t want to do it, thats pretty weak. There are lessons to be learned in international play, ask anyone from the redeem team. LMA could learn how to play and score while not being a primary offensive weapon, that way he could adjust to guys like batum or oden getting more involved in the offense.
No, it doesn't make a difference for me.
He’s got his own reasons not to go.
Of couse I realize everything I say here means nothing.
In K.P. I STILL trust.
Travis Outlaw fan from the beginning.
No, because it's Turkey.
Yes, if he somehow gets offered and turns down London 2012.
Same for B. Roy.
The time commitment that US basketball expects from the roster players has become rather demanding.
LMA's upset that Joe Johnson's making about twice as much as he is

I know I've been sulking around about it.

It does seem peculiar.
By no means is it a requirement for him to go nor do I have any preconceived notions or expectations, and undoubtedly he’s got other important things going on in his life.
But it is a bit underwhelming of him to opt out like that.

Well...
I won’t think anything less of the fella….but it seems like if you compete and train with some of the higher level players your game in turn is elevated as well.
It would be a nice springboard into the season

I could not care less
I think “national” teams are ridiculous anyway. There’s always a whiff of Nuremberg in the air at any medal ceremony

Did you just Godwin this thread?
I think national teams are awesome. At the recent World Cup you had national squads containing players who immigrated (or whose parents immigrated) to start a new life for themselves and millions of their new countrymen cheering them on. Teams like this demonstrate tangibly how interconnected our world is and really humanize people we often consider foreign. The fact that the USA can have an Olympic contingent that includes people from all sorts of ethnic groups really makes me proud of my country.
W0rd, as Mortimer would say
And speaking of Nuremberg, Germany’s soccer team which is a HUGE deal there just had players whose parents or one parent hailed from about ten different countries on it (Ghana, Nigeria, Brazil, Spain, Poland, Bosnia, Turkey, Tunisia, …). Talk about the world becoming global. And yes, the US and EU with aging populations due to no western country having the necessary 2 kids per woman will each need hundreds of millions of immigrants in the next 50 years just to keep the current level of economic productivity. It’s a fact that all too many politicians and current citizens like to ignore.

"He just decided that he didn't want to do it."
Yes, I am disappointed.
I really don’t care all that much about gold medals, but playing with the NBA’s best against the world’s best would have been a golden opportunity for LaMarcus.

No
I’ve never been a great fan of second seasons. Last year, we had two tired and ultimately injured players in Batum and Fernandez, and after an NBA season, players need to work on their injuries, heal, and work on their game without the threat of injuries. From where I sit, the evolution of the world games is a little too much – as its become a second season.

I'm disappointed in him a little. Perhaps he wants to focus on getting that all-star spot.
I think the competitive nature and pride in playing for his country could have been great for his game. I wasn’t worried about him getting hurt either, as he has been very durable for us. Too bad. I think he would have been very good at FIBA play, probably better in FIBA than in the NBA.

Turkey is a powderkeg of military factions waiting to blow sky high
I would not want my kids to vacation or work in Turkey. For the NBA to do anything
in Turkey, is crazy, and very suspicious. Cue the X-Files theme if you like.
Everyone feel free to post either links to photos of your family vacations in Turkey, or
soundclips of crickets.
The NBA is not the country, LA has proven to be a model citizen, and I trust a
20 + 10 guy to make wise choices to benefit both his team, and his family.
Don't want to play? Fine. But burning bridges with someone like Colangelo is moronic.
LMA always struck me as a guy who plays to get paid, so this doesn’t surprise me.
