Lack of 3 point shooting...
Is it just me or is our real major problem (besides injuries) not being addressed? Anyone who watched our playoff series with Pheonix saw that though our backcourt is great at getting to the rim and usually the foul line (Roy and Miller), it quickly became predictable since we rarely had a successful outlet at the 3point line and we became easily defendable by logjamming the paint. Unlike Pheonix we had little ability to spread the floor and only did well when Roy or Fernandez or Webster were hitting outside shots. Now we've traded Webster, will probably trade Fernandez and only have Roy. Batum's a great player but not really a huge 3-ball threat and neither Miller nor Bayless can hit a 3 to save their life. I really wish we'd go after a dedicated outside threat like Ray Allen to compliment Roy and Miller's driving abilities to help us spread the floor. I'd suggest trading any combination of Pryzbilla/Fernandez/Bayless for a good SF.
C = Oden / Camby
PF = LA / Cunningham
SF = Ray Allen or someone / Batum
SG = Roy / Matthews
PG = Miller / P. Mills

Batum is not a 3ball threat?
I thought he was our most efficient shooter… especially from 3pt range.
However, I do agree with the premise of the post. The team could use one or two more shooters… you know I hear there is this guy Matthews who plays for Utah…

Absolutely - correct on the premise, but wrong on the position
Amen to your premise that we are lacking on perimeter shooting. Your conclusion regarding Batum is not correct. His shooting last year was vastly improved, and there’s no reason to think he won’t continue to get better. I thought I saw Matthews shoots 38% from 3 – not bad. Thus, between Roy, Matthews and Batum (and Babbitt?), there is an outside threat at the 2 and 3 positions.
It’s the lack of a perimeter threat from the PG position that will – both Miller and Bayless, that will hurt the Blazers this year.
Before upper left corner gets here, I'll reiterate his position...
Bayless shot about 40% from 3pt range the last two months of the season. Combine this with the fact that he is an extremely hard worker, and that there are a huge number of examples of players improving their 3pt shots measurably over their careers (Jason Kidd, Chauncey Billups, Troutlaw), I say give him another season at least.
You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.
Also, Bayless shot extremely well at a distance during college.
It didn’t automatically translate to the NBA, but should return with a little more practice/PT
This is really the reason why we will probably have a very hard time winning games next year.
Book it. At least with Nate coaching. We were highly dependant on our outside shots the past 3 years for out success. Let’s replay all the highlights, Trout’s long bank against grizz, all of Roy’s tre’s, all of Blakes tre’s. Can any remember an awesome offensive rebound which led to some killer dunks to change the momentum of the game? Nah. It was long shots and fast breaks.

I think Batum at 39%
for his career from 3 could be considered a threat and Bayless isn’t as bad as Miller at 3’s. He is not really a great outside shooter but teams do have to repeat him. Not too sure how Ray Allen playing the SF would work out on defense… probably not that well.
yeah that's ridiculous
“old” ray ray played defense better than any blazer could possibly do RIGHT NOW. Talk about Batum’s potential all you want but I’d take Ray ray over Batum any day of the wiggety week.

seriously? Ray Allen?
did you even watch the Finals?

Patty Mills can hit three....

But Patty Mills is not a Trailblazer...not really.
Unless I am mistaken, along with numerous other BEdgers, he is under no contractual obligation to the Blazers and can accept an offer from any team. So to have his services we are going to have to get him signed. This could be costly if he continue to perform well at Summer League.
I thought he was restricted?

Im sure Utah would love to try to punk us.

Except they don't have a need for a backup point to D-Will
Do they even have money to throw his way?
they dont need one they have mr summer himself

I agree that we need more shooters
Both Batum and Roy can hit the 3 but beyond that (assuming Rudy is gone) we have no proven three point threats now that we have lost Martell, Blake, Rudy and to a lesser degree Travis Outlaw. Luke Babbit is an attempt to address this need as is Wes Matthews, however, I would like us to get a JJ Redick or someone like him to really help space the floor.
This is an essential ingredient when you have players like Roy, Miller, Bayless and Oden who all bring traffic into the lane.
Maybe lma extends his range a bit?

he should be encouraged to do one or the other...
He should either extend his range to the three point line or be able to play more around the basket. With Oden coming back I wouldnt be disapointed if he went with the three ball..

He should be expected to do both?
It would be nice if he eventually does both, but to expect it is unreasonable.

Stop with all the humor!
We’re not here to have a good time damnit!
i will give him 37%
ultimately I hope he and Oden develop a nice high-low post game…
that would be deadly and plays to both of their physical gifts.

we need a better, bigger version of Steve Blake ... Gilbert Arenas anyone?
he was a solid point … could hit a three, run the play, limited turnovers (was not clutch however). It’s possible that Roy will see more time at the point along a bigger lineup (Matthews, Babbitt, Bayless). Even though he was great last season, I see Miller as the odd man out as long as Roy is playing. Do we trade Miller/Fernandez/JPEC for someone like Gilbert Arenas? Possibly Kirk Hinrich? There is a logjam at the point in Washington …
I know people hate Arenas
but I would totally go for it. The only problem is that means getting rid of Miller, who is a known commodity.
Silver lining
Gilbert had a nice little Jordan-like rest :p
except with the guns and whatnot…
Silent Swagger.
He's a shooter, no doubt...
Seriously though, while the NBA was the source of most of the legal drama, I don’t think bringing guns to an arena would be as big of an issue in the Northwest. Oregon and D.C. have completely different gun-cultures. He wouldn’t have been arrested for it, anyway, though he would have still gotten the suspension
Would be fine if it was a shotgun...
…he could easily claim he was heading to Sauvie’s Island for a little duck hunting. totally legit.
what killed us in the playoffs
was a hobbled roy a missing oden a missing pryzbilla…
That is it.
Jump shooting teams do not win titles. Sure you need some outside shooting and I would argue we have some. This is not our principle problem. It is getting a roster together where some steady and consistent player rotations develop.

I completely agree.

If Patty Mills can run an NBA team like he ran the Summer League team the other day...
He could be a starter in the NBA.
Silent Swagger.
If Ekene Ibekwe can block shots in the NBA like he did in SL the other day
he could be first team NBA All-Defense.
I'm sure....
that’s why’s they drafted Babbitt. he’s a sharp shooter. so is Elliot Williams. he can hit the long ball but cnt hit the mid range. Wes Mathews also can hit the open 3.
so…. I’m not sure why u think they army trying to address theneed of shooters… McMillan and co. even said them selves they were targeting shooter through the draft and drafted the 2 best shooters in thisyrs draft.

oh n by the way...
ray Allen signed with celtics for 10mil a yr. so I’m sure the blazers tried but his price tag was too much.

many nba scouts said Babbitt was the best shooter in the draft
did this include nba 3pt range as well?
Treat people well because Karma can hit you at any second.
I remember seeing from a highlight compilation that he had a couple from well outside the college line.
Anyway, he’s such a pure shooter than if he doesn’t have it, he soon will.

This is a championship level team...we should even compete for best record in the conference
1. Miller – Bayless
2. Roy – Matthews
3. Batum – Matthews
4. LMA – Camby
5. Oden – Camby
Deep Reserves Yet “Playable” in event of injury: Joe Pryzbilla, Babbit, Rudy Fernandez, Dante Cunningham
Almost .....
I like your 8 man rotation. I’d like to see a nine man rotation with Dante getting about 10-15 minutes. I think there’s enough minutes in a nine man rotation for Bayless, Matthews and Camby to each get about 24 minutes a game.
Bayless backs up the 1/2, Matthews backs up the 2/3, Cunningham backups the 3/4, and Camby backups the 4/5. And like you said, a lot of young depth behind those nine.
However, I would still prefer to see a different starting point guard, and with Rudy, Miller and Joel, we should have the assets to upgrade.
I wish it were true, but alas I don't see it
Good team yes, deep team yes, title team, not unless the Lakers, Heat and others have some serious turmoil this year. Stars beat depth when it counts, it’s as simple as that.
This looks good but don't you think
that with just three on the second team they would struggle defensively?
no
a ton of teams have 7 or 8 man rotations…we were going against the grain when we had a 10 man rotation.

Lack of 3pt shooting a tough problem to solve
Since the starting PG has no 3 pt shot and the starting SG was shaky last year too. Batum has developed a solid long ball, but it’s tough to address a general lack of shooting by tinkering with the bench. Signing Matthews, who would be a major rotation player, is about as much as could be done to add shooting without replacing Miller and/or Bayless.
when Roy was healthy he shot quite well.
He was ‘shaky’ when he was playing less than 100%.
You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.
All of last season...
Health was definitely a factor, but he was only a 35% shooter pre-allstar game, which is not that great, and only got worse later. The only month he shot more than 36% was in 3 games in October to start the season.
We know he can shoot better though, like he did the prior season. One factor is getting used to play with Miller. The biggest factor though I think is winning. One notable stat from last season: Roy shot 35.7% on 2.7 attempts from 3 in wins, and only 30% on 4.7 attempts in losses. The takeaway I think is that Roy takes a lot of bad shots during losses to try to get us back into games, and if everyone is healthier the team will play better, and Roy’s % will go up.
Either way though, Roy said himself adding a shooter should be an offseason priority, so he must feel like there is a lack there.
With us getting Matthews I am now 98 % sure Rudy is gone
