At what point do the Blazers just come out and say that ‘yes, we are trying to take down Utah’?

That would be today.

Offer him a front-loaded toxic offer, of course,
and force Utah to overpay, and put them into such luxury tax hell that they will give us Deron Williams, or at least send him out of the division.
But seriously, he’s a known contributor who might be had for relatively cheap. He can back up two positions, and hits the 3 at a good clip.
the problem with making an offer to an RFA
is that the Jazz have a week to match it…another week of limbo like with Millsap, meanwhile other FAs will be getting snapped up

well, if it's a BAE offer, we won't have to wait to make an MLE offer

the final nail in the coffin of Rudy in Portland
if we are going after a pure 2 rather than a combo 3/2, then we are planning on a non-Rudy future for sure

Rudy's replacement, come on down
I guess the Blazers figure “we’ve got Andre and Marcus, who needs more veterans?” smh
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
your veteran fixation is getting out of control, smh
For a bench role player, I think value (in a WARP type fashion) is pretty important. I seriously doubt we’re offering him the full MLE, and it’s not like someone who’d play 12 minutes per game behind Brandon is going to provide a lot of ‘quality veteran playoff leadership’.
Besides, who on the FA market really has that much experience? I don’t think we’re getting Ray Allen, I don’t know that Mike Miller has ever gone deep in the playoffs, does JJ Redick even count?
You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.
it’s not like someone who’d play 12 minutes per game behind Brandon is going to provide a lot of ‘quality veteran playoff leadersh
What if that same player averaged 15 mpg behind Nic Batum?
Matthews is 23, signing him (and drafting 3 more rookies) indicates the youth movement continues. How long can Brandon wait around while all of these new kids develop? I would’ve preferred a Raja Bell or even a Kyle Korver, or someone who’s at least been around the league more than once
that’s why I’m smh re: the Blazer’s 1st choice

It's basically a peeing match between Utah and Portland
Though I wouldn’t be surprised if he simply signed and traded for Rudy, so basically they would get a similar salary.
Rudy and Jerry Sloan? Made for each other
that would be a fitting end to Fernandez’ Blazer careeer, send him to the Jazz. I’d love to hear him to compaining about his PT to Jerry and get his backside chewed

Don't mind Matthews
Could be that excellent 6th man if asked to score and hustle.
"OK Kids! Who wants a basketball? That's why I love my Chevy Silverado."
I think I've uncovered KP's fiendish plot to undermine Portland's FA process
Born remained confident, though, that the Blazers were prepared for the money run. He said that Pritchard made a point to include him and Buchanan as much as possible during past decisions that involved either adding or passing on a player. And by combining forces and immediately jumping out of the gate, Born does not think Portland will miss a beat.
link
KP left them a priority list of FAs to call at 9:01 with RFs who were most likely to be matched at the top. Chad, Mike and Nate are just working the list. By the time they figure out that these guys aren’t coming to Portand, there won’t be anything left but dreck, and Paul will get mad and continue the front office purge
Who said that KP wasn’t the smartest guy in the room?

do you think he answered Nate’s call and said “sure, I’ll take the MLE and lace ’em up one more time!”
then we’d have some real veteran leadership in the backcourt

I hope he has scrap.
"What people need to know is that those pictures were taken a year and a half ago, and I've grown since then." - Greg Oden
its a good move
if we get him, he’d be our second string defensive stopper.
if we don’t, we screw utah into signing the guy for more than he’s worth, and put them over the lux tax amount (if they sign boozer), that probably leaves them with korver and hayward as their wings — two bad defensive players.
in KP i trusted
I agree as well
However, I’d rather see if there’s a bigger name (a la Mike Miller) that might want to play here before taking the “let’s poison our rivals” approach.
Matthews would be a good asset, but I think we need more experience.

Babbitt and Cunninham can both play small forward no?
I can’t really see Cunningham getting killed by any second string small forwards.

While I agree with your point, I want a veteran that can step in if Batum is injured.
I really want a quality 6th man that can score and backup both the 2 and 3 spots. I’d really be disappointed if our only major moves of the offseason turned out to be getting Matthews with the MLE and trading Webster for the 16th pick. But I’d take a Matthews for Rudy (+filler) sign and trade, and then use the MLE for a backup 3.
by BlazerFanSince1970 on Jun 30, 2010 10:48 PM PDT up reply actions
Not a chance they pay him the full MLE.
by Nick Van Excellent on Jun 30, 2010 10:50 PM PDT up reply actions
Doesn't matter. We need the full MLE for a backup SF.
by BlazerFanSince1970 on Jun 30, 2010 10:52 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm fine with Cunningham.
Plus I’ve seen Mathews do a passable job on Kobe, so I think he could guard a lot of small forwards. Or maybe we trade Rudy for someone else, or maybe we just play a three guard lineup since Camby is such a solid defender.
There are a bunch of options, especially with the second unit where size probably isn’t as important.
by Nick Van Excellent on Jun 30, 2010 10:56 PM PDT up reply actions
Sorry, but I'm tired of youngster development unless they have exceptional, immediate upside.
i.e. Batum and Oden, not Cunningham.
I want to win this year, and that means filling out our key backup roles with quality, tested veterans that contribute off the bench and can step in when starters are injured. Just my opinion I guess.

by BlazerFanSince1970 on Jun 30, 2010 11:22 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah.
I’m not into youngsters either. Especially with the team’s shaky health.
I give Cunningham a pass because he’s older and has shown some defense, which is my main beef with young guys. I’m still hoping Rudy and some of the other youngsters get traded for some real help.
by Nick Van Excellent on Jun 30, 2010 11:42 PM PDT up reply actions
Cunningham did contribute last season, as a rookie
After a full season, a playoff round, offseason workouts, summer camp, and training camp, he’ll only be better. That’s pretty immediate upside.
He’s already a better rebounder than LMA (not saying much, I know), and his shot is coming out. Not to mention, he has tremendous athleticism and a great BBIQ. Give the kid a chance…He might not have Oden or Batum’s star potential, but he seems to have upside in the Paul Milsap/Ron Artest range.
I like Dante
I’d just like to see another backup wing who’s on the far side of age 25 (at least!) added to the 2010-2011 roster

Disclaimer: everything I know about basketball I learned on Blazersedge.
well, yeah
ones a rookie and the other can’t dribble
I guess if you morphed Dante and Luke together you’d have a decent backup 3
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
Yeah.
Because it’s really important that your backup SF has great handles.
by Nick Van Excellent on Jun 30, 2010 10:53 PM PDT up reply actions
You have to have someone to fill in for Batum when he is injured.
Cunningham isn’t ready for that (will he ever be?) and we don’t know what Babbitt will be yet.
by BlazerFanSince1970 on Jun 30, 2010 10:55 PM PDT up reply actions
That's a fair point.
I have some faith is Babbitt, but not as a starter. The Blazers might just slide Roy to the three if Batum get hurt, which is probably OK for short stretches.
by Nick Van Excellent on Jun 30, 2010 11:04 PM PDT up reply actions
It's great to hear you have some faith in Babbitt.
I’m hopeful, but I don’t know anything more about him than what I’ve seen in the highlite reels. And you know how unreliable they can be.

Ack! As if that solution has ever solved anything
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
It got Miller into the starting lineup
ultimately getting Steve Blake out of the starting lineup. So that’s accomplishing something I guess…
not really
Nate went away from the 3 guard lineup after 9 games (the W-L record was 7-2, BTW) probably because Roy was getting tired of defending SFs.
Andre yelling at Nate on Jan 7 signaled the end of the Blake starting boo-boo. And the team played much better during the 2nd half of the season (once Nic and Camby were added to the starting lineup…)

Like it....
-Intense defender, should be even better here with some shot blockers behind him.
-Offensively, he moves well w/o the ball, hustles in transition, good spot up shooter and is hard nosed with the ability to post-up smaller defenders. Not much of a ballhandler.
Highly doubt Utah doesn’t match, but he is one of the very few solid and realistic options for a FA back-up 2.
Talk about underwhelming
we need one more star, not Wesley Matthews
Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!
Rudy for....
Seraphin once the pick makes it to Wiz in the Heinrich trade. Notice the team isn’t talking about him at all and the Wiz asked for him before the draft and we said we wanted a pick instead.
Then Seraphin and Nic can make there Babbitt jokes together in French.

yeah
there’s a lot of summer left obviously, but if we go into training camp having added the 3 rookies, a guy like Matthews, and a 3rd string veteran PG, color me VERY disappointed.
Seriously though, why are we wasting time and effort with restricted guys? This guy was Utah’s starting SG down the stretch, he defends well, he shoots well, and he stepped his game up in the playoffs, scoring 13 points in 37 minutes a game. First off, why would he want to come here to backup an all star instead of start there? Second off, it’s all moot anyway, because Utah will match whatever we offer.
This was our big number 1 target? Really?!?! My guess is we got shot down by a lot of agents over the past few days

batum needs help!
what we need is a player that can keep up and shut down players like melo, lebron, odom and artest of the world….
that player needs to be able to defend and put these guys on their heals on offense.
and what these guys I mentioned have in common that batum has is the strength and size.
batum may have length but batum dose not have the strength and speed that these other elite or big small forwards… all these I’ve mention can definitely go off.
if u ask me…. guarding the pg isn’t a problem it’s the small forwards we are having trouble with….
batum can guard elite Pgs, elite sfs, even some elite pfs…. but everytime he gets owned by elite sfs….
if we definitely want to win. that’s watt we need….. pls no more undersized tweeners!

I’m not worried that much about Dante’s defense and rebounding, I sure hope he’s working on his ball handling skills if he’s going to be playing more backup 3 than we were led to believe
