The WNBA Thread (aka "When is Brittney Griner coming!?")
First off, I really want to like the WNBA. Back in college at OSU I worked a few women's BBall games and they were pretty cool and all, rah rah, lot more passion at times, good TEAM focus etc etc. I just had no idea who was who aside from our own players, and without any real WOW factors like extreme height/dunks/oops/girls dropping 40/night, I had trouble sticking with it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portland_Fire (Completly forgotten about FIRE!!!)
Now the WNBA has some interesting players and some of that ever important star power, something that the NBA/NFL has really keyed in on to market itself. It's not the TEAM, it's the matchups or individual players that attract an audience more often than not. You don't see people wearing Blazers jersies with BLANK on the back or TEAM and no numbers- you rock your favorite player if you can afford it. Still, the same issues that are inherent to women's basketball are present, just not quite as prevalant. More athletes, more HUGE games/tripe double types, more taller players etc. The All-Star weekend tie ins also are kinda neat as they try and strengthen the bond between the two sides of the coin.
I think a lot can change if a certain lady by the name of Britttney Griner eventually plays for the WNBA. She can dunk. She can dominate on the boards/block shots like none other in recent memory, and is adding to her offensive game. She is TALL for a lady at 6'8''(and possibly growing I don't know) so that's always interesting to see as that's about the equavlant of a Yao Ming/Shawn Bradly type in the NBA. When she was playing in college playoffs recently it was the ONLY women's game i saw all year, and rightly so as ESPN hyped the beejeezus out of it and got me sucked in.

I also think that having a WNBA video game-that is GOOD mind you-would do wonders for the sport. Get EA/2K to whip something up for the Summer Time inbetween LIve/College games. That should create a bit more buzz around it, and with increased media coverage it just might
Another tidbit for this season is Marion Jones playing for a team. Back in teh day for North Carolina she was damn good and led them to a title, then went to the racetrack route for fame, so that's kidna interesting since she's been removed from the sport for more than a decade.

Interestingly enough, the WNBA almost tries to be like FIBA in a lot of ways(3pt line line, length of game etc) where maybe they should focus on making it more like the NBA. It's now WFIBA or something after all.. Obviously you probably can't move the 3pt line back farther than FIBA/NCAA, but perhaps make the quarters the same length as NBA(WNBA are 10min/ x 4) to help increase those numbers. People more often than not will respond to larger numbers, and it can be more comparable then to NBA. THe WNBA for 10 years had a 30sec shot clock, but finally smartened up and shifted to the NBA 24second in 2007...but maybe too little too late? So far career PPG leaders are hovering around 20ppg, rebounders arounders around 10 etc. Maybe it's a slightly more team focused game than the NBA, but those aren't really eye popping stats from supposedly the best players in the world.
So what do you think? WNBA going to make it another 5 seasons? Do you ENJOY the WNBA? Do you detest it?

One interesting random factoid I recall from OSU Women's BBALL...
…was the fact for many seasons they would have male rec players come in and scrimmage against the girls, in hopes of making them tougher, more physical I suppose.
That’s always the age old debate when it comes to broaching the subject of any woman’s sport, the whole “guy vs girl” debate, i.e. would Micheal Jordan avg 60 pts a game in todays WNBA kinda thing.
I think with the Britney Griner’s of the world coming down the pipe we may see an interesting transformation.
If you think of generations of basketball players and breeding/training, you can obviously see the lineage passed down from the many decades of male dominated sports.
Case in point Shelden Williams(DUKE) and Candace Parker(Vols) had a baby recently, that could eventually go on to become quite a phenom given that genetic pool, financially support and added training down the road.
So perhaps that’s one of the biggest issues with women’s sports, they may have to play catch up in many ways because they haven’t been playing for 50+years.

please don't take this the wrong way.
The NBA today is a game of speed and strength that the WNBA will never match. It is not an issue of boys playing the past 100 years. It is an issue that Boys are bigger, stronger, faster. PLEASE don’t get mad about that. Look at the facts in any sport.
In my opinion the WNBA will continue to fail because of this. It is just a question of how long the NBA will continue to subsidize it to keep it afloat.
I hope that I am wrong in this because I have young girls and hope that they will want to play Basketball as they grow older (i have no illusions that they will make it to the WNBA) and a girls league might be inspiring for them.
I don't disagree, but ...
The NBA today is a game of speed and strength that the WNBANCAA will never match. It is not an issue of boys playing the past 100 years. It is an issue that Boysadult men are bigger, stronger, faster. PLEASE don’t get mad about that. Look at the facts in any sport.
You're right.
Basketball is a competitive sport and by that inherent aspect of it we tend to evaluate all participants in it. The NBA is and will always be better than the WNBA simply because of physiology which so-far hasn’t been tampered with by science. Women can’t compete at the same level as the men can and that is why the vast majority don’t pay attention to the WNBA. If this weren’t the case, then teams like LA and Boston, Cleveland and Ordlando simply wouldn’t have the following they have because people wouldn’t be enamored by the best and the flashy play, they’d be cheering on the home town team regardless of what anyone else was doing.
"She turned me into a newt!
A newt?
...I got better."
Griner is a beast
She’s built like a female Nic Batum, with KG’s post game. Which, now that I think about it, is like a female Garnett. There might some personality similarities as well. She once punched an opposing player and leveled the poor girl.
I still feel Brittney Griner may very well be an intersex individual like Caster Semenya and Sarah Gronert.
I firmly believe that the WNBA should impose a gender verification test, for somebody who's of ...
an ambiguous gender is at a distinct advantage compared to a pure XY female. Then again, though, being a hermaphrodite puts someone in a real grey area, particularly regarding athletic competition.
In any case, though, it’s a very sensitive subject, which can blow out of control (e.g., Caster Semenya & Sarah Gronert). Concerning Semenya, I’m sure most folks recall how everything spiraled downard with the IAAF publicizing the gender verification tests. Semenya’s odd, ill-timed YOU magazine cover photo shoot didn’t help matters, either.
As it pertains to Gronert, though, that whole ordeal flew more under the radar. Nevertheless, Gronert reportedly had superficial genital surgery at 19, which is noted in the below online news article. That, of course, is a form of body mutilation solely to fit within the so-called norms of society.
I don't know...
LeBron James and Michael Jordan are/were superhuman athletes. Why should they be allowed to compete against great athletes who aren’t simply freakish and more “normal,” like Clyde Drexler or Andre Miller. Is it fair that the Glide didn’t get a title in Portland because of some superhuman freak with an unfair advantage?
Discriminating against someone because their biology gives them an advantage is extremely hypocritical when you decide to draw the line at gender, especially in cases where gender cannot readily be determined. Approaching gender as a pure dichotomy is clearly erred, as we know not everyone falls into one of the two established categories, and we don’t have one unquestionable means of determining where a person falls.
At the same time, there are physical differences between (or among?) the genders, and I can see the point for having leagues like the WNBA. But, as you point out, it is a sensitive issue to go about, and it is particularly difficult in sports. Nevertheless, creating a gray area for those of an ambiguous gender should really be avoided, especially if it means excluding talented people from competition.
I like the WNBA. The Phoenix Mercury with Diana Taurasi and their offense that makes the Suns look slow paced is cool.
Robert Sarver probably made a concerted effort with his front office when they hired men such as ...
Paul Westhead originally and later Corey Gaines — who’s Westhead’s disciple — to coach the Phoenix Mercury. Sarver’s hiring of Westhead and Gaines happened in 2006, too, which was right at the peak of Mike D’Antoni’s SSOL offense making headlines with the Phoenix Suns, so that may’ve had something to do with it.
Lower the rim height a foot. This will allow a post game for more than just 3 or 4 women in the league.
They already use a smaller basketball, so you can’t say that it is insulting.

Interesting, would be cool to see wider dunking. Maybe do this for NCAA too.
Though people all over would never allow this. Just maybe for WNBA.
