Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Found this on ESPN Insider. Apparently Thibodeau officially declined the Hornets offer yesterday. Looks like Monty is gone. Too bad. He did a great job with some of our young guys and would have been an interesting option to replace Nate some day.

Will be interesting

Been great with player development/relationships. No clue how he is with X’s and O’s. Next Mo Cheeks perhaps?

Good luck to him if he gets the job

2011 staring lineup: #11, #7, #88, #12, #52 Reserves: #6, #21, #4, #33, #31, #20, #8

That's going to be a huge vacancy for us

Next to the draft, that new hire brought in to replace Monty might be our biggest offseason move this year

Yea, it will be interesting to see what kind of a guy we go after.

Maybe we’ll use the opportunity to bring in a proven strategist instead of a player development guy, given the team’s evolving needs (thought Monty may have been great with Xs and Os to, I don’t know).

I would like to see someone install an offensive system that really allows Roy, LA, and Oden to excel together. It’s hard to lay blame without being inside of the locker room, but I got the distinct impression last year that Nate and company didn’t know how to integrate Oden into the offense without disrupting Roy and LA’s games. And it seemed as though there was a general lack of direction from the top as to what the guys roles were supposed to be. I would like to see them clearly and confidently defined this offseason. I think the players will adapt as long as they believe they’re being asked to do what’s best. Again, it’s hard to say anything with certainty, but I’m not convinced that Nate is the guy to draw up the plan of attack. The right assistant could really help.

It's not the offensive system

Ours is remarkably efficient, just not very creative or fun to watch. Nate is a defensive minded coach with a mediocre defense. I see us going either for another player-development guy (Juwan Howard, perhaps?) or a defensive coach. Someone like Thibodeau would be perfect, but he’s getting an HC job no matter what (someone will want him, no doubt, and he wouldn’t have turned down the Hornets unless he had a better opportunity awaiting), and I don’t know who else has a great defensive system and is looking for an associate assistant coach spot. If Larry Brown has any young-ish assistants, that would be great.

We were not a mediocre defensive team early in the year

So lets just say that Nate does not know how to run a defense without a center. Can you forgive him for that?

Nate is a way better coach than Woodson or Brown

He is more creative when he has more options, as we saw earlier in the year when Oden was emerging. Brown had Shaq, Williams, and Jamison, while Woodson had Smoove, Crawford, and Horford. Nate’s system does a much better job of involving Miller and Aldridge along with Roy than either of those two coaches, and we did pretty darn good for having half a team for most of the season. Nate won two games against the second best team in the West without his franchise players, while Brown and Woodson’s relatively healthy teams made it to the second round and lost to lesser teams. He may have similar system, but he is a higher caliber coach.

While Nate McMillan was head coach of the Seattle SuperSonics, Bob Weiss on his staff. Weiss, ...

by the way, had been with the Sonics franchise through a portion of George Karl’s reign and all of Paul Westphal’s short tenure; thus, he wasn’t an outside hire by Nate McMillan, but rather an organizational guy. Regarding Weiss, he came from an up-tempo, flex offense background — which he installed when he took over for McMillan after “Sarge” left for Portland, although it failed miserably — however, the man known then as “Mr. Sonic” was who he was in spite of having this grizzled veteran on his coaching staff.

In the end, ultimately, my point here is that McMillan will never change his ways—no matter who’s on his coaching staff. McMillan is who he is at this point, end of story.

Congrats Monty

Please convince the NO owner to trade Chris Paul to Portland.

I'm interested if he takes any other coaches with him

We could have a decimated coaching staff…couldn’t we?

by parkinglotj on Jun 3, 2010 9:18 AM PDT reply actions

I bet we pay better than NO

Dean is also a candidate for some of the head coaching jobs around the league, though, so we have a decimated staff even if Monty doesn’t take anyone with him.

I wonder what actual impact this will have on the Blazers.

No disrespect to Monty. I’m happy for him and hope he’ll do well.

It’s just… exactly how big of a role did he play on where this team is? It doesn’t really seem quantifiable to me. Wouldn’t young players have developed anyway? Would those same players be better if they’d had a different mentor? Who’s to say really, right?

Being insistent when you're wrong is just really, really annoying.

That's a very good question...

It’s obviously hard to quantify an assistant coach’s impact. We know things have worked well and he’s been a part of the success. We know he’s a hot commodity around the league. And we know several of our young guys have worked with him and he has been credited by them and others for at least some of their success. But I don’t think we’ll really know what his impact was until he’s gone and we see if things change. Even then, we can only guess about causation.

One possible impact

Monty is best known for coaching up Travis, and lately Batum. Now, Bill Bayno and Kaleb can also work with players one-on-one, but if the Blazers don’t have Williams they may decide not to draft high school kids or freshmen and develop them in house, like they were doing in the past.

We saw the beginnings of this change in draft strategy last year, when they drafted Cunningham and Pendergraph, and Chad Buchanan repeated the other day that at this stage of their “window” the Blazers are looking for kids who can step in and help right away (“they already know who they are”) as opposed to younger prospects

I wonder how big of deal this is too...

I am not sure if I am right or not but I always kind of felt like Nate surrounded himself with yes men.

This makes me sad

mostly cuz my stepmom said I look like Monty, even though I’m white. He always does look pretty sharp though, just like me. ; )

Bill Bayno

If he’s healthy. Nobody better for player development/relations.

Did this just open the door for J Howard to replace Monty?

Or does Nate have someone else in mind?
