As expected, the Portland Trail Blazers have announced via text message that they have waived forward Ryan Gomes, acquired in a draft day trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves that included the #16 pick, Luke Babbitt from Nevada, and Martell Webster.

I would have liked to see us move Gomes for Beasley and try to pry Miami's #1 away in the deal

Sure, if they land 3 huge FAs it’s a bad pick, but if they strike out, it could have been pure gold.

I know the Heat said they wouldn’t give Beasley away for free, but if it’s true that no one wants him then I’m glad the Blazers didn’t get him.

That depends if Marty can play alongside Wes Johnson, or if the rookie #1 draft choice receives preferential treatment

This is going to happen as the new contracts of Roy, Aldridge and Camby come into play.

Last year, I just marveled at what an amazing team Portland had for the price. From memory, the Blazers did not exceed the salary cap until they signed Travis Diener late in the season. Considering, Darius Miles’ 9 Million was still on the books, the entire roster (less Miles) cost less than 50 Million. Those days are over. Now, the team is struggling to stay under the luxury tax.

Martell’s contract was pretty spendy when compared to contracts for Nic, Rudy and Bayless (and the rookies and Juwan, of course). Honestly, if Martell’s contract had the exact same buyout clause that Gomes’ has, the team might have just waived him to create space. What the Blazers received for Martell is a younger, cheaper replacement and a nice savings in payroll. Sure Paul Allen had to buy Gomes out but he regularly pays money for draft picks and trades. Plus, it gives Dante a chance to compete for minutes at the 3. Personally, I would like to see Dante get some playing time. He could be a keeper.

The way the NBA is structured financially, teams need at least 2 cost-friendly players for every large contract superstar (unless they want a huge luxury tax bill). Players with Webster’s and Gomes’ skillset for $4 – $5 million/year are often expendable from quality teams, especially when those contracts have 3 more years on them.

From a payroll savings standpoint, this was a smart move. And with Dante and Luke on the roster, the Blazers should be able to duplicate what Martell brought to the table.

Martell’s contract was pretty spendy when compared to contracts for Nic, Rudy and Bayless (and the rookies and Juwan, of course).

Marty’s mid-level deal was Warp-tastic when he was starting back in Jan and contributing well. But paying 5 mil/year for a 23 year-old player who is only going to receive 15-20 mpg is a luxury that few teams can afford. In a way, it’s an affect of drafting high school players: they “grow out of” their rookie contracts sooner than they “grow up” into consistent veteran role players. In Portland’s case, they couldn’t afford to wait around for Marty’s role-player-on-a-contending-team light bulb to flicker on. Webster is “too good” to just sit around and collect a mid-level paycheck for spot minutes, but not important-enough to keep around as injury insurance in case Nic was hurt again, for awhile

by two4larue on Jun 29, 2010 3:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree.

The quote you reference was not meant to imply that Martell was overpaid. I think his extension was fair and reasonable for both sides. But, given the Blazers current payroll status and Nic Batum’s ascension in the league, Martell’s contract certainly stuck out to me as a good one to move. I just didn’t think it was possible since it had three years left. The more I think about it, this was a pretty amazing trade. Gotta love the T’Wolves. Though, in their defense, Martell should make them better.

Personally, I was hoping the Blazers would move Rudy (mostly because he is unhappy, vocal about it and a distraction) and Martell would be given the sixth man role. I wanted Martell to have an elevated backup role (at the 2 and 3) because I think he deserves it and performs better when given responsibility. However, the move the Blazers made was a much better one. What I want and what should happen are generally different.

by Sean M on Jun 29, 2010 4:47 PM PDT up reply actions

I wanted Martell to have an elevated backup role (at the 2 and 3) because I think he deserves it and performs better when given responsibility.

I just don’t think Martell had enough handles to be the 2 guard when Bayless was playing the 1, and I think that the Blazers want Jerryd to take that backup SG “6th man” role and run with it, this year. I don’t know who the backup PG will be yet, if not Rex. But it won’t be Rudy, and it shouldn’t be one of the rookies. A 3-guard rotation with Roy-Miller-Bayless would be ideal, but it Brandon or Andre aren’t in the game, then I’d like to see a longer guard than Bayless on the floor to defend 2 guards. But that hypothetical longer guard should be able to help Jerryd run the offense, and Webster isn’t ever going to be that guy. Nic might eventually grow into that 2nd ballhandler role, but Batum also has to come out of the game for a rest, once in awhile

by Nick Van Excellent on Jun 29, 2010 3:15 PM PDT up reply actions

I hope he "wastes" 8+ mil in free agency, too

but every little bit helps, I guess. There may be an arbitrary budget amount that the Vulcans have set that PA can’t exceed. 70 mil, 75 mil? I have no idea. But I did start mentioning that they might consider dealing Marty to move up in the draft (to remove his contract from the payroll) and prepare for spending the MLE) as far back as March, so I’m sticking to my version of reality until the events on the ground radically change

I agreed with you back then BTW.

Moving Webster made a whole lot of sense if they were going to use the MLE. Also, there were some other hints, like Cunningham saying the team wanted him to improve his three point shooting, which doesn’t make much sense if they planned on keeping Webster, Rudy, and Batum long term.

If Webster can’t produce in limited minutes then he can’t play behind Batum.

by Nick Van Excellent on Jun 29, 2010 4:08 PM PDT up reply actions

If Webster can’t produce in limited minutes then he can’t play behind Batum.

He couldn’t consistently produce, that was my concern. The roster needs a veteran wing who is used to playing in limited minutes off the bench, preferably one with playoff experience. That’s why I’ve targeted Mike Miller or Raja Bell in the past. Kyle Korver might fill this role, as well. I want someone who is steady, but not so good that he starts taking PT away from Nic or Jerryd (like Blake, Outlaw and Rudy did)

And that's assuming that Babbitt and Williams

sign for 100% of their rookie scale. A more likely scenario is that they sign for the ‘standard’ 120% of their rookie scale. That scenario would put the Blazers at $66.15 million in player salary.

A $56 million cap means a luxury tax threshold of about $68 million.

In short – making this deal has put Portland a bit futher under the tax threshold, but a full MLE signing would definitely put the organization back into territory of paying tax money (and also losing out on not getting the rebate that teams under the threshold get).

On the bright side...

apparently Patty Mills will be playing for us in summer league

You like Patty?

I’m pulling for him but he looks 5’10" out there to my eyes. I can’t imagine him being able to dish the rock around any sort of perimeter D. Not to mention his own D.

I wish sarcasm could have it’s own color. You know, {"color=sarcasm"} would make your words, say, flourescent yellow? That would really help me out.

somebody said he was 6' in sneakers

so when he was singing “Merry Christmas” last December at the youth center, there were a couple of kids standing next to him that must’ve been pushing 6’

and according to Jason Fleming, we've put a QO on Mills

http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=16649

which makes sense, because otherwise I don’t see why he plays for us this summer as opposed to a team where he might have a better shot to crack the roster.

Him signing the QO could make Armon Johnson’s tenure with the team real short, unless we do some sort of trade this summer I suppose.

nothing new really

a source close to Danny Ferry says he has “serious interest”. No one says he has been offered the job yet. Ferry is under contract through tomorrow, so is reluctant to comment until after that. The NY search form contacted Ferry, Buford, Presti.

Ferry is the lead candidate, job could become his to turn down. control/autonomy could be the sticking point. but Smith says his inside team source indicate KP has a high amount of control most of his tenure.

Dunleavy contacted the Blazers to indicate his interest in the GM job (this from Kenny Vance). Smith had no info there.

Expected move

They never intended to keep Gomes, he was specifically included in the trade BECAUSE his contract was non-guaranteed and we could save money by waiving him

Just shows how good that trade was for us – we get a lottery-pick level talent (at the same position to replace the outgoing player nonetheless) AND save quite a bit of cash, just for unloading our backup SF

Thanks for going out in style KP!

The salary cap savings are a plus, but I thought Gomes had a lot of interesting potential as a backup SF/PF. The guy can score and after the draft the T-wolves raved about his defense and work ethic. Maybe just blowing smoke?

Well, that's $1,000,000 of dead money next season, $1,000,000 of dead money the following season, and ...

$750,000 of dead money in the final season. So yeah, I still wish that the team could’ve flipped Ryan Gomes for a useful asset rather than pay him out a total of $2,750,000 over the next three seasons in dead salary; though, it’s a justifiable move if the lone objective is staying under the luxury tax this upcoming season.

by AK1984 on Jun 29, 2010 5:23 PM PDT reply actions

storyteller would need to confirm but..

i believe we can now use the full MLE and not get hit with the luxury tax. Gomes created 3 million about of cap savings by being waived and i believe previously we were between 1 and 2 million into tax territory if we used the MLE.

so, if we go out and add a player with the MLE, this trade paved the way for it in a sense.

Story and I discussed this somewhere today

Not quite enough space to use the MLE and stay under the tax
