Dirk opts out
Dirk adds himself to the free agent medley. Best scenario is Dirk leaves and the best free agents Mark @$$ Cuban can get to come to Dallas are Joe Johnson and Brad Miller.

I am truly
Surprised. I thought he would resign. Certainly changes the dynamics of free agency slightly. Dirk is a great back up plan for the team(s) that dont land LBJ, Bosh or Wade. Should be interesting

he's still going to sign with Dallas...
this is probably to free up cap space for Dallas to land a good free agent……unless they don’t have much cap space even with Dirk off the books….then….I don’t know why he opt out.
Go to Heaven for the climate, Hell for the company.
I've heard this elsewhere, but I'm confused by it.
How does it free up cap space? To get the cap space, don’t they have to renounce his Bird rights? And then they wouldn’t be able to re-sign him after they signed another FA.

Cap space doesn't have anything to do with it
Since it was Dirk, and not the team, who held the option on that last year of his contract. He could have agreed to an extension, but as unrestricted free agent he’ll be able to sign a brand new contract with the team.

contract extension = 3 years
new contract = 4 years

Yeah that makes more sense. Where are people getting the cap space idea?
I saw it at HoopsHype too.

Don't know

Sign and Trade!!!
Oh, please….If there were any chance we could get him, I’d totally give up LMA and some of the youngsters…
He was expected to opt out.
That doesn’t mean he’s leaving. He’s still expected to re-sign with Dallas.

Send LaMarcus back home with a sign and trade?
I know it will not happen, but I’d like to pretend it would.
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.
Yes, yes, oh please yes
LMA, Rudy and JPEC for Dirk seems to be a win-win. The nice thing for Portland would be that we could all stop talking about a “true point guard” in the starting lineup since both Roy and Dirk could handle the ball. Also gives us another legit last-shot/big-shot player.
Dallas gets a younger, hometown PF, Rudy to play alongside Nash and Joel for half a season or use his EC as an asset later.
"What we have here, is a failure to communicate."
Think of the floor spacing he'd provide for Oden too.

LMA is BYC, so he is extremely difficult to trade. BYC players are almost never traded.

BUT....
If LMA gets an opportunity to play in Dallas, his home town, I don’t think he’d pass that up.
"Ain't nothin' in this world for free."
Oops I read interpreted that wrong
BYC = base year compensation
But keep in mind it only applies when the Blazers are over the cap… with the waiver of Ryan Gomes, I believe we’re now under the cap? Not positive. Maybe thats just under the luxury tax threshold.
"Ain't nothin' in this world for free."
No, still way over the cap
Just barely under the luxury

And Dirk would be the ultimate PF to pair with Oden.
In Bayless I trust.

Perfect for Oden, Roy, Miller, and Bayless
I know I left out Batum, but he can play with anybody. He’s like LeBron freakin James, only French, and better at defense.
Hes German.
Sorry, thought I would mention that before you have people mad at you for being on the other side of the nationalistic line.

No he's French.
He meant Batum.

He's not going anywhere but Dallas.
Just a move to lock up a long-term and no-trade deal with Cuban.
Dirk is just
testing the waters without the intentions of swimming, if Dirk left Dallas, I would be shocked. I’m sure a team like New York would pay him big bucks to play there, but alot of fans would lose respect for him. He’ll go back to Dallas, but I would toss a package together to see if Dallas would sign and trade if Dirk was serious about leaving.
99% chance he resigns
but I’d at least see if a) Dallas is down with a sign and trade and b) Dirk is down with being a Blazer
Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!
Umm... Really Guys?
Dirk for LMA? I have no interest. LMA is a younger Dirk… Yes, Dirk is better right now, but there is no way we get him for just LMA and filler… Hes not Lebron… Hes not Shaq in his prime… Hes not worth mortgaging the future for. If LMA develops as he should, esp. with the new coaching staff (which should have at least one guy chosen specifically to develop LMA) he becomes Dirk-like just when we are looking into a championship. I would be more interested in Kidd, despite the age.
yeah
I think I’m in your camp…Dirk is going to want max contract, LMA didn’t quite go for full and LMA is younger and basically the same player. Dirk is a little better but on the downslope, LMA isn’t currently as good, but is still on his upslope I think. Gotta say stay with LMA…

Different opinons.
I guess mine is that LMA will never be close to as good as Nowitski and with Nowitski for LMA the Blazers are contenders for the championship even without a healthy Oden.
Also, this is all silliness because I don’t see Cuban S&T Dirk for LMA.
In Bayless I trust.

He's 31
That’s not terribly old, and he should be able to play at a high level at least until he’s 35-37. Height and shooting ability really help extend your career, and Dirk has both, and in even greater quantities than LMA. His shooting percentages, especially on FT’s and 3pt’s, have only improved over the last few years, if anything. LMA may be a younger Dirk, but he’s not nearly as good as Dirk is/was at 24. I love LMA, but Dirk is what I dream he could be, not what I think he has the talent to become.
