Brian Smith Notes
the Blazers have explored the possibility of trading Gomes since acquiring him last Thursday. Portland will continue talks today.
the Blazers will now look to Cunningham as a player who can lock down an opponent's top shooting guard and small forward.
The Blazers are targeting two positions during free agency. A sign and trade or a multi-player package deal remain options. But it is more likely Portland will acquire 1-2 players with its MLE and/or trade exception.

re: Gomes
Smith also says we would pick up a 4.8 million dollar trade exception if we waive Gomes. I’m not sure about this one, given that we didn’t actually trade him, which is as far as I know actually what generates the exception to begin with. We’ll see if he got this from team sources who actually know, or if it’s erroneous assumptions on someone’s part.
Any guess which two positions they are eying in free agency? I gotta think it’s a backup 2/3 and a veteran PG, but I could see the old “banger 4” being on that list as well.

Huh?????
No way does Portland get a trade exception if they waive Gomes….I’m not sure if Born actually told this to Smith or if he misunderstood. But the trade rules in the CBA are very clear, and there is no way that Portland gets a $4.8 million trade exception if they waive Gomes.

I thought it was way off
he finally corrected himself just now

Update: #Blazers picked up trade exception worth $500,000 in Webster deal. Gomes’ future with team will not change value of exception.

Hehe, yeah we discussed that in the JD and figured out it could only be the difference between Martell's about $4.3 million and Gomes just under $3.9 million deals
Would have been very weird if what you do with a player after a transaction goes through suddenly creates exceptions
Nice to see Dante getting some love
Sounds like he’s going to be converted to a 3, which means that perimeter game is going to have to come along. Sweet…
hard to see him finding much time at the 4
with LMA and Camby locking down those minutes, if DC can’t backup the 3, he won’t find much floor time.

At 3 though he'll have to battle with Babbit for minutes behind Batum
Disclaimer: everything I know about basketball I learned on Blazersedge.
yeah
sounds like the team views Babbit and Williams more as future projects – don’t expect them to see much floor time this year.

ditto
I see Dante looking at Babbitt in the locker room and thinking the same thing that Batum did re: Luke Jackson, back in the fall of ’08
“Don’t even think about it, kid—this job is mine!

How much time is a rookie going to see under Nate?
Babbitt is going to have to really impress Sarge with his shooting to see much PT.
There’s also the option of paying either one along side Batum, since Rudy’s minutes will essentially be garbage time this season, if he’s even around.
I really hope the hype around Babbit
is for real. This team needs a scorer off the bench who can light it up, and he fits the mold. His defense doesn’t need to be steller in short minutes off the bench, so I’m not worried about that. I just want him to be able to light it up.
Ben II Blazersedge.com || New to Blazers' Edge?
Babbitt could also theoretically play the 4 in a small lineup
Luke spreading the floor with Camby or Oden to cleanup the mess in the middle? Might work out ok against the right team for limited stretches.
there aren't enough minutes to go around at PF as it stands right now
without talking about stretch 4s and small lineups
Cunningham will play that role, if it’s even needed

Smith now confirms Blazers targeting PG and wing positions
sounds about right to me

Also, there is a rumor David Kahn has been hired as the new GM of the Blazers
Seriously, how many PG’s and wings do we need?
well, we need more wings
we really only have Roy and Batum, Rudy won’t play for us again, and Williams and Babbit aren’t ready. Backup wing is our biggest need by far, so that makes sense.
I think Portland wants to give Bayless Rudy’s old minutes at backup 2, and maybe some time in a 3-guard unit as well. Thus, the need for a backup point guard is clear – and they would want a veteran rather than going with Johnson or Mills there.

I'll shoot myself if David Kahn is the new GM......
Go to Heaven for the climate, Hell for the company.
Good one, and I agree
I was hoping we’d grab at least one big body in the draft…now I definitely see backup wing as a need (Mike Miller please) but do we really need more PGs?
(No. No we do not.)
You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.
Yeah, I think you've got it
Not that I’m a Miller hater, I love the guy. But we need to do some consolidation and improvement on the bench.
do we really need more PGs?
Bayless is still learning the position, Andre is a workhorse but the team could use a veteran #3 PG for emergency backup
Williams and Johnson could be in the D-league as much as they’re in the NBA this year. They’re the future, not the present

Do you think there's any chance we could get Anthony Morrow this summer?
I know the Warriors have said they’re going to give him a qualifying offer, so probably not, but how high do you think they’ll go to match?
"Nicolas! You're the strongest boy in the world!"
At least to the MLE
which is all we can offer without finding a trade exception first.
I could see them sign and trading him, though, if we took Ellis or Biedrins off their hands. Maybe try and line up the Griz to take Ellis for OJ and Thabeet? I dunno, I think they’ve solved their SG problem by drafting Henry and are trying to turn Mayo into a point…
someone's going to give him the MLE
now that Martell’s gone, there might be a chance for AM. But Morrow is probably going to want assurances that he’ll get starter’s minutes
and I don’t want to give up any of Batum’s PT

Hello? Dante defendng 2 guards? If that’s true, he’s come a long way in 12 months, when Prunty said that he wasn’t quick enough to defend Travis Outlaw out on the perimeter
I’d settle for DC bellying up to Melo and not getting himself completely worked
