Trade Drawer - June 25th
Now that the 2010 NBA Draft is officially over, we have a slightly clearer picture of what the Blazers roster will look like next year. However, there are still issues to be addressed and I don't think anyone expects the current lineup to be the same lineup that arrives at the start of training camp. The following scenario is what I would like to see happen this off-season - just a couple minor trades, not a blockbuster, but a couple changes that I think will put the Blazers in a better position to be title contenders next year without breaking up our core group of players. Please use this trade drawer to suggest your own trade ideas, too. Thanks!
Trade A: Jerryd Bayless and Rudy Fernandez for Darren Collison and Julian Wright
Why the Hornets do it: The Hornets are not trading Chris Paul. However, Collison emerged this last year as a legit PG and they might as well try to get something back for him as it's not ideal to keep both players. Julian Wright would be thrown into the mix to make the salaries match, but I doubt that New Orleans would miss him much as he's been rotting on their bench and has stated that he's unhappy with his playing time. Bayless would be good for the Hornets as could play backup PG, but could also probably play alongside Chris Paul. Rudy could replace the recently traded Mo Pete and could share the position with Marcus Thornton.
Why the Blazers do it: Andre Miller has been great for the team, but he's old and has value as an expiring contract, so I could see him getting traded at some point before the trade deadline. Even if he's not traded, we need to find another PG soon and I think it's clear that Bayless is not the answer. I actually like Armon Johnson a lot, but he's probably at least a couple years out from even being considered a possible starter. Darren Collison could fill in well as our team's starting PG, instead. He's young, quick, a good defender, and a good shooter. I wanted the Blazers to draft him last year and was extremely disappointed when the Hornets got him with the pick right before ours. Also, Rudy has got to go. I hate the idea of trading him because I love Rudy and I think he would immediately make an impact on their team, but there's bad blood now between him and the Blazers and we need to fix the situation as soon as possible. Trading Bayless would be hard, too, because I love his work ethic and attitude, but I just don't see a long-term fit on this team for him, especially now that we have Elliot Williams and Armon Johnson.
Trade B: Ryan Gomes for Michael Beasley
Why the Heat do it: The Heat are trying to open up more cap space in the hopes of being able to sign 3 max players, probably Wade, LeBron, and Bosh. The idea is they would trade Beasley for Gomes just for the cap space that would become available by then cutting him.
Why the Blazers do it: I highly doubt that Gomes was included in the draft night deal so that he could play in a Blazers uniform next year. It's much more likely that it was just to make the salaries equal and so we could have another trade bargaining chip in this crazy free agent off-season. Beasley has had some character issues in the past, but I don't believe it's been anything too serious (please correct me if I am wrong) and he's still very young and will hopefully mature as he gets older. Most importantly, he could be a very promising backup to LaMarcus and would provide some much needed offense in our second unit.
All this being said and done, this is what the 2010-2011 team roster would look like:
PG: Miller / Collison / Johnson
SG: Roy / Williams
SF: Batum / Babbitt / Wright
PF: Aldridge / Beasley / Cunningham
C: Oden / Camby / Pryzbilla
What are your ideas? I would love to hear some proposed trades for Tony Parker!

Decent ideas + well though out = rec
"I'm passing it down," Howard said. "Showing the guys that, hey, here's an example of a guy who played 16 years. If you don't want to listen and get the valuable, free information from him - soak it up like a sponge - then you've got to be a damn fool."
I do want to package and trade up, however

I want Beasley as a 6th man
I think it is a role he could play too. I know his ego wants to be a starter, but being a 6th man would put a lot less pressure on him and free him up to play to his strengths (instant offense). I also don’t think he is a starter for a championship team, but 6th man I can see.
I really don't think the Hornets are trading Collison
unless Peja or Okafor are attached. Miami are trying to get rid of Beasley, but they’re still holding out hope they can get something of value in return in addition to the cap space.
We could always throw rudy into this trade.
Make it Gomes + Rudy for Beasley. That way they’d get cap space and cheap, good talent. Also, there’s no way we’re taking on Peja’s contract just so we can get Collison. Maybe Okafur if it was a Okafur and Collison for Rudy, Gomes, and Pryz deal.
"Nicolas! You're the strongest boy in the world!"
Oh, but i just remembered that Beasley can't be packaged with another player, right?

True...
But it sounds like that is for two months. A deal like that could be worked out and agreed to, but couldn’t happen until August. The plus side is, that’s still plenty of time before training camp!

I'm pretty sure his contract becomes guaranteed at that point, though.
Miami would really only want Gomes for the cap space, so it looks like if we’re trying to trade Gomes to a team like Miami, we’ll need to do it before the contract becomes guaranteed and it has to be just him without any other players packaged in the deal. Please correct me if I’m wrong, though (there’s a good chance I probably am).

The first one probably has the most chance of getting off the ground.
I agree that CP3 is the brightshiny that most BEdgers want, but Collison is eminently more “get-able” Not by much, maybe, but definitely easier to get than Paul. Plus the trade also helps the Hornets out in areas they need it, a legit 2 guard in Rudy and a nice backup for Paul in Bayless.
I know less than half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
Banning "chat speak" is like banning apostrophes. There would be no "you're" if some punk kid in the 1700s hadn't been a rebel.
I agree the first proposal is sensible
But I think the CP3 scenario has wings now. Maybe not quite as realistic as collison, but if they’re looking to shed salary and we’ve got the flexibility now.. especially if we waive gomes.. we could take paul and another bad contract in return for some kind of package. I’m bad a cap balancing so I will rely on my intuition on that, but I could be totally wrong.
Can the Blazers waive Gomes? I hadn't realized that.
Believe me, I’m all for seeing CP3 in a Blazer uni, like he should have been all along. The problem with “taking on a bad contract” is that the Blazers don’t HAVE any big, expiring contracts to give back. And the ones that ARE expiring aren’t enough to pry Paul away.
Gah, frustrating.

Yes, they can waive him.
We’d have to pay him 1 million in guaranteed salary for the first 2 years and a little in the 3rd i think, but it can be done. This is what the heat would do if we were to trade him for Beasley. Also, regarding your comment about us not having any decent expiring contracts, Miller and Pryz together are $13,500,000, which is pretty substantial and the same amount that Chris Paul makes.

I see us
most likely trading Gomes for Beasley since we need to trade him before his contract is guaranteed, and the Heat want to take money off the books. New Orleans is not trading Collision, period. He’s too talented and cheap, and they’re cutting costs too.
Elitism - It's lonely at the top. But it's comforting to look down upon everyone at the bottom.

The whole point is that Collison is too talented for the Hornets to keep him.
Why keep both Paul and Collison? If Paul’s on the team, Collison will probably only play limited minutes unless they envision him as their long term shooting guard, which I doubt. Here’s an updated from today on Rotoworld:
“Darren Collison believes that there is a strong possibility that he will be traded by the Hornets by the end of the summer.
With team management standing behind Chris Paul as the face of the franchise, Collison seems to be left in limbo. The Hornets need to remain mum to keep Collison’s trade value high, which doesn’t help Collison’s peace of mind.”

New Orleans has made it pretty clear
That they won’t trade Collison unless either Peja or Okafor is attached. And IMO they won’t make any move until the deadline because if the sale of the team goes through then Shinn isn’t the owner any more and they won’t be in cost cutting mode
