Steve Patterson interview today...best info I've heard so far about KP, Paul Allen, the Vulcans and what happend
This really is a must listen. Steve Patterson was interviewed today on 95.5 the game on the MSP. Some highlights of the interview (I'm adding my own interpretation to some of this):
- Paul Allen and Vulcan's are tone deaf to PR
- Vulcan's in Seattle throw people under the bus to stay in Paul Allen's good graces
- Berte Kolde is very close to Paul Allen. They have been friends since they were young.
- Warren Lagarie overplayed his hand trying to get a new contract for Penn and KP - apparently Legarie and Bert Kolde have a longstanding relationship, and Legarie used Kolde by misinforming him about the Penn's status with other teams, that forced Paul Allen to give a Penn a bigger contract and promotion. KP and Penn got caught in that mess, since they perpetuated that perception of that misinformation that Legarie was spewing to Kolde. Furthermore, Kolde has lusted after running a sports franchise for a long time, which would give him motivation to throw KP under the bus.
- KP leaked information to the press and talked behind Paul Allen and Larry Miller's back...basically that KP took credit for the good things that happened, and blamed ownership and the president for things that went badly
- KP unduly got the sole recognition for getting Roy and LMA
- The only deal KP made the Roy year, was to get Sergio Rodriguez
- Paul Allen wanted Morrison over Roy
- KP and Penn with Legarie were trying to go around Larry Miller and gather more power in the organization
- Paul Allen is committed to putting a winning team on the floor
- Paul Allen wanted to extend Miles against the recommendation of the gm and president....knees were evaluated and doctors said they wouldn't last 18 months
- It sounds like there isn't enough direct lines of communication between Portland management and Seattle...too bureaucratic
- Paul Allen is very involved with the team....but sometimes people who are not informed or competent (namely Berte Kolde) have his ear
- Haha..this one is good, Patterson says he would've drafted Durant over Oden at the time
almost 2 years ago

very insightful
thanks for posting. I’ve got to listen to that!
Marcus Camby was gaining energy again as the game wound to a close, much like a vampire sucking the life out of a dainty maiden. Amare Stoudemire, on the other hand, looked daintier and more maidenly with every possession.

thanks for the write up
that does sound like a pretty realistic overview of what might have happened. Some blame for PA, some for KP, and some for other random guys.

- KP unduly got the sole recognition for getting Roy and LMA
- The only deal KP made the Roy year, was to get Sergio Rodriguez
- Paul Allen wanted Morrison over Roy
Something here doesn’t add up correctly for me.
If Paul wanted Morrison then why should he get credit for drafting Roy?
If KP only made the deal for Sergio then who DID get Roy?
which is something I've been hearing for a year now
from someone with very good sources.
The truth is likely somewhere in between – it was a team effort.

I think KP was a Roy fan, but he didn't make the phone calls.
Which means he didn’t make the Roy deal.
by Nick Van Excellent on Jun 25, 2010 10:53 AM PDT up reply actions
it also means
that KP wanted eveyone to know he made the Roy deal
or at least he didn’t defer credit (enough) when the media and fans were calling it a “Pritchslap” etc

that is what he wants you to believe
patterson said quite clearly, “i made the phone calls.”
and when asked about what KP did, he said “he made the sergio deal.”
this is clearly a guy with an axe to grind. he wanted the credit, so he came onto the radio show and downplayed all the scouting work KP and Co. did when they first identified Roy and Aldridge as the players to get.
considering how slimy this guy was with the DMiles issue, i don’t want to believe him.
Also, considering how much crap KP gets about supposedly always seeking the limelight, he always defers to his scouting team for their contributions… something Patterson fails to do. And KP never went on a radio show to beg for credit.
in KP i trusted
Im sorry but it wasn't that clear to me that he had an axe to grind
why would he?

That's what Patterson said at the time...
I doubt PA cares if KP took the credit for Roy/LA. Surely he’s no fan of Patterson’s. Patterson probably included that stuff out of his own pride. But there’s less reason for him to lie about or embellish the other stuff. And that stuff is reason enough for Allen to fire KP. You don’t lie to or mislead your boss. Period. That should always be a fireable offense. And when you add to that the fact that KP basically accused Allen of forcing him to take Mills, appears to have portrayed Allen as the bad guy in the Roy negotiations, and didn’t fire LaGarrie after his broadside attack on Allen, it’s quite clear that Allen not only had the right to fire KP, but was behaving reasonably when he did. All of the other rumors and stories may or may not be true. But they’re essentially moot because there’s enough public information to explain things.

But there’s less reason for him to lie about or embellish the other stuff
Right. The draft choice stuff isn’t what got KP fired. It’s the end-around Larry Miller office politics with Penn and the Lagarie-related stuff.
So now we know, let’s move on. If KP gets another GM job soon then that means all the “A-Woj stuff” bounced off of him. If KP has to work his way back up from lead scout to GM over the next few years then we’ll know that some of the A-Woj stuff (complaints from his league sources re: KP’s arrogance) wasn’t made up

Patterson is a self-serving sleazeball
There was nothing here (that was potentially true) that wasn’t already known. Here’s just running down a checklist of the (mis?)information that is already out there.
This whole interview was about building up Steve Patterson’s resume.
Ridiculous some of you can’t see things for what they really are.
Just like I had to take crap from people on June 23rd when I said the Rudy rumors were false, his trade value is nil, and guaranteed 100% that he would not be moved on draft day.
But Jason Quick said…

What does Steve Paterson have to gain by coming on a local radio show and speaking on behalf of his experiences?
Nothing, it won’t pad his resume or make him look better or worse, it’s just a local radio show. You have your opinion on Patterson based off of media hype from the past, just like many have there opinions of KP based off the same thing. The truth of the matter is somewhere in the middle, so when you listen to these interviews rather then just coming in with the perception of Patterson is a sleaze ball, or KP is god, you should really ask yourself what they really have to gain by saying the things they do.

Steve's info has been corroborated by others
it’s just that up until now, no one has connected all of the dots, either in an article or during an interview
perhaps Patterson is less-afraid of reprisals than the local writers?
Just like I had to take crap from people on June 23rd when I said the Rudy rumors were false, his trade value is nil, and guaranteed 100% that he would not be moved on draft day.

Patterson has been pretty good both times I heard him on the MSP
Hated his interviews and soundbites when he was GM. Most of his comments make sense and really give insight to the dysfunction of the Blazers’, Vulcan and PA. Portland is still, probably, fortunate to have PA’s money backing the team but not as successfull as if we had a real cohesive team running the Blazers. I had forgot all about Miles and his extension…YUCK! He soured me on the Blazers and the NBA. He did not put forth an honest effort to come back in a timely manner from his surgery and then stuffed us when he should have retired. Still could not play well because I do not believe he really put the work in to make it back. You don’t get that fat and soft if you are driven to come back.

Frankly, I'm not buying the Patterson "gets no credit" take
He was the titular GM at the time (interim position) but Pritchard was publicly acknowledged as responsible for the draft and the driving force behind all the draft day trades.
Patterson was not the basketball man – that was Pritchard and the scouting team. Patterson’s claim for responsibility is akin to an attorney taking all the credit for winning a case when his legal aid did all the work.
Patterson was the one dealing with Chicago and Boston to get the trades done
That there is no doubt about. And there is no doubt that Pritchard was heavily involved in the talent evaluation of Roy, Aldridge, and Sergio. How much Patterson was involved in that talent evaluation remains to be seen.
Patterson was very clear - he made the phone calls
that is a far cry from identifying the trade targets or setting the trade up. Patterson was an interim GM at the time – and not the player personnel guru. He was a figurehead on the basketball operations side from the moment Nash stepped down. He didn’t run the draft, didn’t scout players, didn’t perform cap analysis or evaluate player value.

Nothing new here. This has all been reported before.
Overhyping the Penn to Minn job offer was the original explanation assumed for Penn’s firing. While it may be true, it was suggested when Penn was fired.

KP and Penn were a package deal, all along
Lagarie was trying to leverage KP into the Blazer’s president chair (instead of Miller) and Penn into the GM chair. (With the appropriate raises in salary, of course)
The Blazers might very well have been better off today if he had succeeded, but the spoils go to the victor and Larry Miller is still left standing, 9 months later
and now we wait to hear who the new GM will be

To me it seems pretty simple after ingesting this....
Kevin tried to play both sides. Some GMs may be allowed to do this. But Paul Allen was not going to provide cover for his GM to play both sides. In other words, Paul Allen did not want KP to use him as the bad guy by saying, I would give you a max contract for max years, but Paul Allen doesn’t want to do that. Or if it were up to me I would do this for you, but Paul Allen won’t go for it. Even if it was true! And maybe this was part of KP’s downfall? Maybe KP forgot that he worked for Paul Allen and not the players or staff?
The other concern is that their appears to be a rivalry between the local management and Seattle management. It seems like there may by too much bureaucracy at Vulcan for the local Portland management team to go through in order to get anything done. I can understand any GM or the Portland based management’s frustration going through the bureaucracy. Especially, when you probably think you can run the organization and make better decisions then the Seattle based group. However, Seattle is where the bills are paid. And of course any good owner who cared about his organization would want to be involved. Going forward, if the Blazers want to be more successful there will have to be a better bridge between Portland and Seattle management groups. And to have these two groups become one rather than rivals would go a long way toward reducing this dysfunction.
Yeah Patterson, we believe that you drafted Roy, would have drafted Durant, but took Martell Webster over
Chris Paul the year before. Yeah, it was all you.
I had to stop listening to this interview.
It was just so self-serving that it was clear I wouldn’t be able to tell what was fact and what was fiction.

Would have picked Durrant.
Sure. This coming from the guy that took Webster over CP3 and D-Will.
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.
don't forget John Nash
Nash was running the war room in ’04 and there was a pre-draft deal in place to take the high school kid (Bassy) in the lottery
and Martell impressed Allen with his shooting at the PF in ’05
I’ve maintained that PatterNash didn’t have enough gravitas to protect Paul from himself in those years (max contracts for Miles, Ratliff, Randolph, etc) KP had Allen’s trust up until about a year ago, and now the franchise really needs to hire another strong (and silent) GM to “balance the force” again
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
"now the franchise really needs to hire another strong (and silent) GM to "balance the force" again"
This is why I’m down with hiring David Griffin as GM.
the part of the interview that I thought was interesting
was his recount of the Miles signing, he really through Paul Allen under the bus on that one. Saying he tried to talk him out of it, to the point of making Paul order him to just, “get it done”. Not sure if that is really the truth, but what he said about Paul Allen the owner, doesn’t give me hope for the future of this franchise.
He overruled his basketball people to sign Miles and Randolph to large contracts.
He would have overruled his basketball people to draft Morrison over Roy
He overruled his basketball people to aquire Sergio.
That is “3 strikes and your out!” for Paul. His ability to see basketball talent in players is NOT good, eventhough after telling us all of these things Steve Patterson said Paul was pretty good at it, the results speak for themselves. So is Steve lying about Paul wanting MIles, Z-bo, Morrison, and Sergio? Or was he lying about Paul Allen being a good judge of bball talent?
As a fan I can only hope that Paul hires a very strong GM, who has the clout to tell him no, and make him listen, while also being able to tell Bert and the rest of the Vulcans to go fly a kite.
Ben II Blazersedge.com || New to Blazers' Edge?
but what he said about Paul Allen the owner, doesn’t give me hope for the future of this franchise.
That’s why I’ve supported ideas like Jerry West as GM, because ideally you want to strong GM who can keep PA from shooting himself (and the franchise) in the foot. We’ve heard the rumor that Paul wanted Darius almost from the time that ridiculous contract was signed (“Portland is bidding against themselves” was the running joke at the time) So, what Steve said re: Miles shouldn’t be in too much doubt.
We’ve also speculated that the decision to pursue Hedo last July might have come from Paul, we may never get the real story unless KP wants to open up about it, later. Certainly Kevin did not deny Allen the chance to draft quick PGs, even though that decision came back to bite KP and Nate last fall re: Mills vs Udoka. Paul needs to be told what to do, and for all of his faults, the best Blazer GM for this was Bob Whitsitt.
Now they’re talking to Ferry, who has been pretty adamant about not wanting to deal with a meddlesome owner, in the past. Now, I would prefer Griffin from Phoenix myself, but if Miller/Allen decide to hire Danny I would hope that Ferry gets something in writing that he has full autonomy and only has to consult with PA about money, and not about player personnel. This would restore some proper balance to the organization. The other stipulation that Ferry should demand is that Bert Kolde and the “hat man” stay out of his business and that he report directly to Paul. That might be too much to hope for, but it’s a worthy goal and now is the time for DF to grab the Vulcans by the shorties, if he’s ever going to have the leverage to do it

It’s time for us to stop calling the cloying bureaucracy of incompetent yes-men in Seattle “Vulcans.” Vulcans, as any Star Trek fan knows, are logical and intelligent. But they do need a catchy name that sums them up. I propose The Duraks (“doo-rocks”)— durak being Russian for idiot.

No way he would have some insider information that the Blazers scouts and Pritchard would not find out about
That reminds me of what Kenny and Jay have been talking about for awhile. They said that in Vegas last summer a prominent NBA exec showed them “actual evidence” that demonstrated why Paul Allen was upset that he hadn’t received all of the information that he needed to make the big decision back in 2007. (This could be MRIs re: Greg’’s knees, or something similar, I’m just thinking out loud, here) KP told the media that Oden’s knees were “pristine” before the mishap at Big Al’s that resulted in his m/f surgery in the fall of ‘07. But what if KP wasn’t being completely forthcoming to Allen, and swept some minor detail re: Oden’s health record under the rug to help convince his owner that Greg was a better choice than Durant? Yikes!
I would sure like to hear more from Vance and Allen re: what evidence that they’re talking about, I’m not sure who they’re protecting now that KP has been let go. Maybe Oden? Or perhaps they’ve been told that the evidence is confidential and they don’t want to risk losing their source…and what if this “Vegas deep throat” was Steve Patterson, all along?

Took Patterson's comments with a grain of salt
During Patterson’s time in Portland – the management had a feel of paranoia – seemed to want to shut people out as they were concerned what others would see…it just felt pretty unhealthy.
Pritchard was a breath of fresh air in the way he spoke to the media and fans – opened up communication and made folks feel welcomed to the organization – it hadn’t been that way for some time.
Maybe Allen, the Vulcan’s and Patterson didn’t appreciate that oppeness and/or exposure to the organization and perhaps thought such exposure brought Kevin too much adoring attention. There is a lot of speculation about what this was all about – errogance, bride, disrespect…who knows. What is known is that the truth may not ever be known and that this kind of thing seems to repeat itself.
I’m hoping the next GM can be as open as Kevin seemed to be and would be out front trying to make a connection with the media and fans, would draft players with good talent and character – not substitute one for the other, and if over time this alienates Allen and the Vulcans, that this person can have at least 3-4 good years before he gets fired, but the team will have at least moved in the right direction during this time versus going back to how it was before.
this person can have at least 3-4 good years before he gets fired, but the team will have at least moved in the right direction
That’s about as long as any GM or head coach can expect to last under Paul Allen (unless they start winning titles, then who knows what Paul would do? Probably offer them both a lifetime services contract or something…or give them their own tropical island as a retirement present)
Trader Bob had the longest run as a GM, and Nate’s hourglass is running out of sand. Whoever replaces KP should have no allusions, this is not a job to settle down into. Lease, don’t buy
