Here is my side of the story, for whatever it is worth. I have been a diehard Blazer fan, as most of you are, for a while now! Starting in 1998 I became a season ticket holder with my father up till around 2005. After that we would still attend numerous games a year (usually via the 20 game packs). I only got to go to one game last year because I now live in Florida, but am/was still a DIE HARD blazer fan! Yet, this firing is completely inappropriate!
First off, if you want to defend good ol' Paul Allen please try, but I don't see it! I did read the post about the business side of things, and it was a very good post with a couple of flaws. To begin, Paul Allen is no NORMAL business man. He and Bill Gates made their money off of a brilliant idea revolving around computers and NOT business smarts necessarily. Second, he is cited as having a net worth of about 13.5 billion by Forbes.com. Individuals who have this type of money see owning a team, in which he paid 55 million last year for salaries, as a toy that he can play with and NOT a real business investment! Granted, he doesn’t want to lose money but, it would kind of be like to me owning a Mercedes. Yeah I wouldn’t want to take the car to a crash derby, but a few dings here and there while taking it out for a joy ride would be seen as acceptable.
Know to the idea that WHEN he fired KP didn’t matter, and or didn’t really matter that much. Like the saying goes, “Timing IS everything.” I believe that when he fired KP IS important! It either shows that PA was trying to send a message that this is HIS team and he will do what he wants when he wants (an a**) or it shows that he is REALLY stupid! Because he had to have known that when you do something is as important as anything and therefore he had to have known that firing him an HOUR before the draft would be seen as the ultimate kick in the nuts and lack of respect, not to mention the message it sends to the fans (like we don’t care about you and further more we can spit in your face and you can’t do anything about it)! The ONLY excuse is if Allen is an Idiot, which I personally DO NOT believe that he is!
I always LOVE the draft, but to me this was the worst draft in Blazer history! Once I found out that KP had been fired I felt as if someone had taken the air out of the room! I honestly was in shock at first, but from that moment on the draft seemed SO pointless! I hope that the situation isn’t as bad as I fear, because I STILL love the Blazers! But to be totally honest I am having a hard time wanting to continue to support the team as long as spoiled Allen is in the driver’s seat! I didn’t quit on the Blazers when they lost a heartbreaker to LA in the 7th game of the western conference finals in 2000! I didn’t quite on the Blazers when they were known as the jailblazers and were the laughing stock of the league! I didn’t quit on the Blazers when Oden went down the first, second, or third time! But I am having the hardest time not giving up on them today!
as a side not: I WISH KP NOTHING BUT THE BEST!! You were a GREAT GM here and you gave me a team to fall in love with. Best wishes and I hope you find a home where they can treat you better!
