throwing in a player to move down in the draft?
to move down?
i realize what miami is doing trying to clear cap space by getting rid of a garaunteed rookie contract at pick 18 plus a player but that still seams a little crazy.

it's something that I suggested that the Blazers do a few months back
if they were concerned about exceeding the luxury tax threshold
not overpaying unproven rookies guaranteed money for 3 years > writing luxury tax checks to the league office

speaking of capspace
this would leave Miami at 27,615,873 which includes Wade’s scheduled salary for next year. if he opts out, he counts for more on a cap hold basis, so he would have to sign FIRST to free up enough room to potentially sign the other two. Taking his number out of the pot, Miami would have about 42 million to divide up among 3 stars. That’s about 6 million short of 3 max contracts. They would either have to all agree to take less (presumably equal amounts), OR Miami would need to rid themselves of Beasley AND James Jones in order to max out all three.

Try $44 million to give to Wade and two others
Cutting Jones is a no-brainer. They’ll have Beasley, Chalmers, the guaranteed portion of Jones’ deal and nothing else but cap holds. After signing Wade first, his higher cap hold comes off.

beat me to it.
i was just coming back to update this. I’ve got them at 11.935 without including anything for Wade, including Jones 1.856 guarantee, and including 9 roster charges. If the cap is 56, that is just over 44 million. If they can dump Beasley for someone making a little under a million, then they are real close to the magic number of 3 max deals.

Presti is up to something
He now has 12 guaranteed contracts for 2010-11 + Weaver’s non-guaranteed deal + 3 First round picks. There’s no way you’ll convince me that he’s establishing his 15 man roster tomorrow…..

Probably looking to move up to the Sac's #5 pick
And pick up Cousins. Green+18+ maybe another one of their 1st rounders should do it. Then they slide Ibaka to the starting 4 and Cousins to the 5.

Cousins is kind of a toss up.....
the physical talent’s there, the mental part….not so much

Thunder holding serious talks with Pacers to trade Eric Maynor, 18th and 21st picks for Indy’s 10th pick, sources tell Y!
for the pacers I think
no guarantee that the guy at 10 is any better than Maynor or the guy at 18.

Pacers need a PG
They aren’t going to get it with the #10.
Thunder need a big. There should be some pretty good one’s available at that spot, though you’re correct that they might not be too much better than the one at #18. However, the odds favor the Thunder in that scenario. Presti has been pretty good at finding talent for cheap (reached for Westbrook and Harden, thought the latter was still taken a bit too high, originally drafted Beaubois, then traded him for Ibaka, got Maynor for cheap).
Works for both teams. However, it bids up the price of those lotto picks, which I don’t like for our sakes.
I heard Presti is trading the 18th pick to us...for Oden...

That might be worth it
As long as he throws in a guy with the initials KD (and I don’t mean Keyon Dooling)
OTOH, never mind. It’s gonna take more than that to pry Greg away

wait, we just paid 2 million to move down 10 spots in the SECOND round
and Sam Presti picks up the 18th pick and a decent shooter for…free?
I’m sure Paul Allen is getting a kick out of this
The Blazers as a whole are far more like my wife than like me in the sense of their physicality on defense.

wow!
if I didnt read it here, I wouldnt believe it! That seems crazy a team would give up an 18 pick and a player for a higher pick!

While this is a good deal for the Thunder, I would suggest looking at Daequan Cook's stats before calling it a steal.
His career PER is 8.9 (7.9, 10.3, and 7.5 for his three years). He is a shooter with a career-best true shooting percentage of 51.2% from 2008-09. While he is still young (22 years old last season), he has done very little in his three seasons to suggest he’ll be more than a journeyman since his stats are plain bad. He was a $2+ million dollar expiring contract to dump rather than a likely asset for OKC.
However, getting a first round pick for $2 million dollars (and a little opportunity cost for having less cap room) is still a good deal. Presti took advantage of the team’s cap space.
getting a player and a 14 spot improvement in draft spots for free is ALWAYS a steal

This might just be plain argumentative...
…but it’s not really “free” because of a loss of cap space and having to pay Cook’s contract (which Miami obviously didn’t want) and it might not really be “a player.” Sure, his contract is expiring and riskless, but that doesn’t make him any better at basketball. As an extreme example, it would be a horrible deal if they had to take on an Elton Brand-sized contract to move up 14 spots. But they didn’t, so it was a good deal IMO and a steal in your opinion.
It could be a great move if it leads to more (like trading for Randy Foye was great for the Blazers because it led directly to Roy), but I still don’t think it’s great if it’s just the typical 18th pick that the Thunder get and Daequan Cook doesn’t explode out of nowhere.
This move is a good move for Oklahoma and maybe Chicago
The move is good for Oklahoma in that they had the cap space available to make the move (which the Blazers don’t have)and moved into the position to select a potentially better player (it’s the same move the Blazers make only they pay out of pocket for a pick which doesn’t count against the cap).
It becomes a good move for the Bulls, if the freed up cap space results in them being able to use the extra money to bring in a better player – they are obviously hoping to land Lebron and likely freeing up space to show to him that they can bring in even more talent.
20/20 hindsight, obviously
but we really ought to have worked our way to having cap space this year, not 2009. Watching teams around the league dumping assets in order to clear 30 million in space in case LeBron brings a pal…
We could have refrained from the Miller and Camby deals, waited a year to renew LMA, and had 10 million in space plus Joel’s expiring. Huge trade chips in 2010, while RLEC and our 2009 cap space was only good for getting Andre Miller, a B player who’s on his last legs.
this idea was discussed pretty heavily before those extensions were signed last summer
even had we not got Miller or Camby, and not extended LMA, the best we could clear this coming summer is about 3 or 4 million – not much more than the MLE really. LMA’s cap hold would actually be higher this summer than his new deal starts at.
Though we would be about 4 million under right NOW, a little more if we hadn’t signed Diener or Shavlick. That 4 million would allow us to take a free player or two like OKC just did, but not like we would be getting an all star or anything.

His cap hold would've been over 10 million?

yep
17,534,481 by rule (300% of his previous salary), but reduced to his maximum allowable salary, which is unknown now, but somewhere in the 13.5 million range.
