I can’t hear about it anymore as both an excuse for self-created totally unrelated problems and a real reason for some other things as well as a political topic.
Great observation by Jobs during the "All Things D" conference about why the TV market is so cluttered and fairly slow to innovate

Bad times ahead as long as the cable providers sit firmly with their subsidized and non-standardized boxes on the TV, at least in the sense of a national much less global market. TiVo is about as good as it gets, and TiVo is non-existent outside the US.
So...I just got offered a job....should I take it?? Here is an excerpt from the email
As I have said, I’d want us to get a head START with things as soon as possible.I do have lots of works piled up presently and a number of unattended chores which you can immediately assist me with, I hope we can meet up with the workload eventually. Permit me to use the coming week to test your efficiency and diligence towards all this, also to work out your time schedule and fit it to mine. I really need to find the perfect person for this job, I’m confident you can take up the challenge and on the long run we should have a relatively sound working relationship between us. I’m online most of the time as I am hard of hearing so I prefer we contact each other through E-mails,but if there is need for me to call, I will be glad to do that.I am glad you are willing to work with me and i promise to be a good boss. I am also glad on the commitment in working.I have been checking my files and what i would want you to do for me this week is to run some errands out to some of the orphanage home, I do that every month.A payment in form of a Wire Transfer/ Bank Transfer will be sent over to your account from one of my clients and i have some lists to email you once you received the funds,You will make some arrangements by buying some stuff for the kids in the Orphanage at any nearest store around you so you can mail them out. I will get you more information on that,I will like you to get back to me with your Contact Details

I think every movie needs a scene
Where a group of strapping young muscular men need to sneak past a heat sensing camera/creature/robot, and of course the best way to sneak past it is to take off their clothes and rub wet dripping mud all over their chest, biceps, thighs, etc.
And since there is a time limit on whatever their mission/activity/bank robbery whatever, they need to help each other rub the cooling mud on each other and then you film it all in slo mo and wait for the money train to arrive.

I hate flight search engines/travel agencies
I put my flight in the shopping basket, want to check out, and woosh the session “expires” and they bump the price by about $150. Thanks guys.
Do you think actual human beings at a travel agency are going to make a slight comeback? There seems to be a little buzz about people’s getting sick of travel sites, and agencies becoming more competitive.
The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Ash.
The last few travel agents I've worked with have left me yearning to just do it myself on the Internet
I had to research every one of their quotes, often to find they were charging me more than online, even though they said it would be the same. Then when I told them it was overpriced, they’d magically find the price in question.
Interesting. When it comes to some things, like international travel, they have come through for us. I guess it depends. For a really long time we ignored travel agents, but sometimes they can beat online prices. One more tool to use when searching for the best deal, I guess.
The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Ash.
True story: The travel agents I've worked with get very mad if you mention the Internet
They want to work with you exclusively, or not at all. If you mention the Internet (meaning you’re checking for best price), they get very angry.
With the market for travel agents bottoming out, the remaining ones get very protective and some see the Internet as the enemy.
I tend to go directly to the websites of airlines, but here I tried a different route
In the meantime I got an email that said the website is still quoting a price that is no longer available, and that they won’t charge my credit card. I’m keeping that and a screenshot of what I really wanted to book just to be sure. At least I got an ID and it didn’t just die in the transaction, which is something I hate even more when you are in limbo.
But I won’t book my flight over them now ;)
Some sites seem to be better about this than others
Some of the US sites are pretty reliable and give you a decent amount of time to consider your options.
Yeah, but e.g. Priceline only lets you use the site when your departure airport is in the US. Similar with Virgin.
I like Kayak, Opodo, etc. but those aren’t the absolute cheapest. But still reliable, so they probably win again.
In business travel I have my own b2b agent who is a highly paid specialist so that works very well. But this is private ;)
No, the market changes too quickly
For example the fares between Atlanta and Vegas have (since the beginning the year) changed on average about once every 6 seconds.
I only know one thing
My Virgin America round trip flight to San Francisco from LA was pretty dang cheap… just 100 bucks after taxes.

well, for simple flights, I understand, but for more complicated trips, I think agents would/should understand when/how to work it.

i wonder why they don't name the insurance agency?
"I told somebody to stop crying," Pendergraph said after the game. "Actually, I told them all to stop crying."
maybe i'm biased, but the principal admitted it was his bad, not the company's.
In any event, it’s a strange insurance company that ensures half time contests. Probably Lloyd’s of London, or a similar group.

many if not all rewards are covered by insurance. I didn’t read where the principal said that. At least the insurance company finally bellied up.
The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Ash.
My bad, it wasn't the principal
Part of the problem stems from McMinnville High School breaking a contest rule. The insurance company that pays if the half-court shot is made requires it happen on an NBA-length court. The school’s court is five feet too short.
The insurance company said it wanted a videotaped measurement of the court, but weeks went by and the school didn’t deliver.
The student leadership adviser, Mordechai Kotler, who coordinated the event said: "We could have acted faster; I’ll be the first to admit that. We hit a road block to making the video, then we put it on the backburner when other issues arose and hadn’t taken it back up."
According to the school, it had difficulty juggling the schedules of all the students needed to do the videotaped measurement and to have all of them involved in the contest sign notarized statements.
According to the insurance company, it has finally received the videotaped measurement and despite the short court, it has just put a check in the mail to pay for Ulvang’s half-court shot.

Steve Nash is going to be working for CBS at the World Cup
Future career perhaps?
http://www.cbssports.com/info/about/press/2010/nash2010wc
CBSSports.com today announced that two-time NBA Most Valuable Player and self-described “football freak” Steve Nash will travel to South Africa to file a series of video segments and reports on the 2010 World Cup. CBSSports.com has partnered with Nash’s video production company, Meathawk, to give fans around the globe a unique perspective on the world’s largest sporting event.
Nash, who was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, will post a series of eight videos to CBSSports.com and the CBSSports.com page on youtube.com (youtube.com/CBSSports) and also upload daily photos, iPhone vignettes, and status updates on CBSSports.com’s social media platforms while interacting with fans about his travels and Cup experiences. The videos, photos and commentary will be distributed through the official pages of CBSSports.com on Facebook (facebook.com/CBSSports) and Twitter (twitter.com/CBSSports).
“This project with CBSSports.com combines two of my passions off the basketball court, the beautiful game known internationally as “football” and video production," said Steve Nash. “I look forward to shooting some memorable pieces from South Africa and giving fans a unique and sometimes humorous look at the World Cup.”
“Having a talent such as Steve Nash represent CBSSports.com is an incredible opportunity and we’re all looking forward to seeing the work he produces from South Africa,” said Jason Kint, Senior Vice President & General Manager, CBSSports.com. “Steve’s sense of humor, unique perspective and access to some of the greatest soccer players in the world should make for fun and entertaining programming.”

BSU to the Moutain West?
Opening Salvo in the realignment battle perhaps.
The opening salvo in the Great Realignment Battle of 2010 could very well center on Boise State and the Mountain West Conference (MWC). While the Big Ten’s efforts to add one, and possibly five, teams, in order to qualify for the cash cow that a conference title game would be have garnered the most attention, the MWC appears to be on the brink of making a preemptive move of its own to brace itself for a brave new college football world.

My favorite television edit was for the movie Major League.
It’s the scene wherein Jake Taylor goes to Roger Dorn’s house. In that scene, Taylor tells Dorn that if he ever purposely tanks another grounder he’ll do the following: “I’m gonna cut your guts out and stuff ‘em down your frickin’ throat!”
In the original version, Taylor didn’t say “guts” or “frickin’” when calling out Dorn. The best part of the edit, however, is the guy who did the voiceover didn’t sound anything like Tom Berenger, so it was incredibly choppy.
On another note, it’s amusing how Major League is rated R, Major League II is rated PG, and Major League: Back to the Minors is rated PG-13.

even after this? (stolen from ulc)
Look at Brooks’ stats for his first three years, after a four year career at Oregon:
PER: 13.1, 12.9, 16.0
TS%: .535, .524, 549
AST%: 23.5, 20.2, 25.6
TO%: 15.1, 12.7, 13.7
3PT%: .330, ,366, .398
Compare those stats to Bayless’ after a "one and done" career at UA. Bayless only has two seasons rather than three, so in order to show the trend in his development I have given his stats from this seasons Playoffs as a substitute for a third season. Certainly this involves a small sample size, but my point is to illustrate the trend in Bayless’ development:
PER: 8.2, 14.3, 15.5
TS%: .487, .534, .536
AST%: 18.2, 22.3, 27.8
TO%: 19.3, 13.8, 9.6
3PT%: .259, .315, .407
BEEBS!!!!!!

Brooks is definitely better than Bayless right now, but I give Bayless a solid chance to surpass him.
Yeah, it's about age and putting what Brooks does in perspective
Brooks is better now but quite a bit older and not really that great as of now. His situation enabled him to put up big-esque numbers.
Bayless’s career could still go a lot of directions, but he had a big jump in his 2nd season and he’s very young.
#52
plus Brooks is a tiny PG, isn’t he?

AK is always flip flopping on BayBay
One day he says he’s the PG of the future, the next he says he’ll have to sign with a Euro team after his rookie deal is up.

Oddly enough, you just summed up the debate about Sergio Rodriguez between as11osu ...
and myself last year. Right now, though, it looks like I’ll win that one, with Rodriguez most likely returning back home Europe soon.
I think Sergio is a great example
Of someone who CAN be good in limited doses but that goodness wouldn’t translate to big minutes.
I think he can be a good backup PG for the right team, but he just ain’t a starter or good enough to dominate the ball like he does. He’s fun and a curiosity but not anythin’ mo’.
Stuff like PER is stuff I like and Sergio looks good with PER, but I think (unlike a lot of players) his good PER is dependent on him being an off-the-bench limited doses role player guy.
#52
I share your opinion on Sergio Rodriguez.
For Rodriguez, though, I’m sure he’d be happier starting in Spain than backing up in America.
I also think, without knowing him, he'd be happier anywhere he can dominate the ball and have fun.
That is much more likely to happen for him in Europe. His talent level is too tweeny for the NBA; too talented to not play, but not talented enough to dominate the ball so much like he was a star. He’s kinda stuck.
#52
Why don't I like either guy?
I classify Jerryd Bayless as a me-first gunner, while Aaron Brooks is a mindless chucker from deep.
They both have high usage rates and play supbar defense, too, so neither player is a good fit next to Brandon Roy.
hmm..
bayless’ assist percentage climbed by over 4% in year 2. his turnover% also dropped… as long as his defense continues to improve, i could see him being a useful player for portland in the future
your stats need to be weighted and normalized
The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Ash.
And he can learn to shoot off the dribble
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
There's no denying that Jerryd Bayless showed marked improvement this past season, ...
although that was on the heels of a disasterous rookie campaign. As it is, though, Bayless is still on a progression path that closely mirrors Louis Williams, whose game I just can’t stand from a stylistic standpoint.
"Sweet" Lou Williams is the only nickname I've heard for him.
I still find his game to taste rather bittter, though, but that’s just me.
he’s referred to as ‘glass jaw’ in the JD because he broke his jaw after i traded for him and troy murphy in our fantasy basketball league
Nope, you're correct that Jerryd Bayless' offense improved from season 1 to season 2.
Yet, I still find Bayless’ defense to be insufferable, as is noted by his poor defensive rating (i.e., 110), poor defensive +/- numbers (i.e., +3.2 net points allowed per 100 possessions & ), and high foul rate (i.e., 4.2 per 36 minutes).

Even in the words of Steve Ballmer it was "just not executed well". Especially it was not executed early enough ;-)
“Just not executed well. Not the product itself, but we went a gap of about five, six years without a product. I think back now and I think about thousands of man-hours, and it wasn’t because we were wrong-minded in thinking bad thoughts and not pushing innovation. We tried too big a task, and in the process wound up losing essentially thousands of man-hours of innovation capabilities.”
The worst was Windows Millenium Edition
Which Microsoft probably never wants to admit existed.

Ed Davis is ranked high based on potential, which is understandable. That was the case ...
with Brandan Wright a few years ago, though, which didn’t quite pan out for Golden State.
I don’t agree. Brandon Wright has been nothing but productive when he’s been given minutes. He’s a player.
I wouldn’t touch Ed Davis in the lottery, but he’ll be a respectable NBA-er.
Nelson has killed the careers of Wright and Randolph, careers that would have been promising under a coach who hadn’t completely gone insane.
He made them both get hurt too!
Nelly needs to go away, for the sake of Dubs fans.
I think both can recover, though their development has certainly been set back.
#52
Even if Anthony Randolph wasn't stuck with Don Nelson, I'm ...
not a believer that he’d be some otherworldly player. Randolph’s handles and passing are overrated, he’s a bad mid-range shooter, is defensively outmatched at both forward positions — as well as at center, which was hilarious apparent when Greg Oden plowed him this past November — thus, I can’t entirely blame Nelson for his lack of success.
I think he'd be a more disappointing Lamar Odom
I think he can be good but not as good as it seems he might be, with his body and apparent skillset.
I don’t think he’s an allstar. Just a middle class man’s Odom; that’s still a good player though.
#52
Yeah, I shouldn't say that Brandan Wright sucks or Ed Davis will be a bust.
On the contrary, Wright is a relatively productive player when healthy and Davis could become a solid role player at the next level. Davis, however, isn’t worth a lotto pick, similarly to Wright a few years ago.
I don't advocate drafting Ed Davis, but the argument his supporters give is based ...
on supposed untapped potential. I don’t buy it, though. Yet, on the other hand, I dislike Greg Monroe, who gets props for having a refined game. I don’t think Monroe will bust — for he should actually be an above average player — instead, I’m not overly high on someone whose game is that of a power soft forward in the mold of LMA/David West.
i think anderson fit in the mold of xavier henry
which they explained

At least Eric Bledsoe could provide a quick impact, à la Rodrigue Beaubois -- except ...
with the muscular build of Kyle Lowry — did this past season with the Dallas Mavericks. I, however, do like Avery Bradley over Bledsoe, although they’ve both got positive attributes. Jerome Randle, however, just flat-out sucks, so Portland better not touch him with a ten-foot pole.

they just didn’t seem to have any energy. The crowd was ready to riot when they came on stage and they just didn’t seem to bring anything; especially after they followed band of horses who seemed to be the most in tuned w/ the crowd.

Increase the value added tax for flowers, pet food, other subsidized goods, etc. seems to be a good solution
And blame rating agencies. It’s what the EU does right now to fix its holes in the budget.
short answer
we lent too much money to too many people who couldnt pay it, banks gave away all their money and didnt have any when people needed it, no one could pay their bills so they gave their houses back to the banks, who couldnt sell them because no one could lend any money since they already gave it away, all the houses are just sitting on the market and since no one is buying home values are falling.

The Things They Carried
both by Tim O’Brien
...when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].
The Things They Carried is about a guy in vietnam and his experiences there. but told in a way where he re-imagines the things that happened to him, so at points you’re getting more than one version of a story. so then it sort of becomes about how a person copes with their own history. it is the better of the two books.
In the Lake of the Woods i honestly don’t remember as well so i can’t safely say what it is about, but i remember it being good.
Another one by O’Brien is Tomcat In Love that is about a linguistic professor who gets in to some weird relationships and stuff. also very good.

No. Unless you count European players who turn pro straight out of whatever high school they went to and can declare early entry to the NBA draft at 19.
So will be Favors. Doesn't matter as long as the player turns 19 in the year of the draft.
Subtract birth year of player from year of the current draft. If greater or equal to 19 → Eligible. Profit!
Yeah, that's true. When high school players were draft eligible, there were even some guys ...
drafted at 17. A prime example of that was Andrew Bynum, who even played in a few pre-season games before his 18th birthday.
I know a couple of people who find that midget to be hilarious, but I can't relate to his brand of comedy ...
whatsoever. Then again, my favorite comedians include guys such as David Cross, Lewis Black, and the legendary Bill Hicks. I, however, also enjoy more unique comedians who aren’t all political, with Stephen Lynch and Mitch Hedberg being examples.

shooting the dog was an appropriate use of force? more appropriate than getting out a nightstick and thumping it once? not that hitting a dog with a nightstick is a good thing, but if it’s attacking you it seems like a better option than shooting it. at least they didn’t kill it
...when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].

but it’s running at you ferociously… if a person was doing that you would be in your rights to shoot them in the leg, why is a dog different?

just seems to me there were other alternatives than lethal force. i was surprised he just managed to hit the dog in the leg while it was running at him aggressively. that is impressive.
...when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].
Dogs can be intimidating and very quick. People are also lazy. IDK.. Whenever I have to punish my dog and it gets defensive, I am not even close to being fast enough to get out of the way and usually get bit.
"Seek the wisdom of the ages, but look at the world through the eyes of a child."
-Ron Wild
It's about reflexes and instinct and the time they had to react
I don’t know the situation, but if a gun is already drawn and a dog is running at you to attack, you don’t want to get into a melee with an attack dog. You want to put it down.
You whack a dog good with a stick, it can still keep attacking you. Plus you’re at a disadvantage because you have to be close to a dog to hit it with a stick.
Depends on the situation!

Our crazy big dog we had to put down because it was murderous
It was 150 lbs of strong crazy dog, and when it went nuts I had to tackle it and hold it down until it relaxed. It wasn’t trying to eat me, it was trying to eat another dog, and it was insanely tough to handle it even though it wasn’t going for me.
If I thought a dog wasn’t going to try to kill me I would likely try to shoot it, depending on the situation. And I LOVE dogs. A big dog can murder you though.

My buddy had a big crotchety old Bullmastiff
It was extremely territorial and had been known to kill smaller animals — It even chased off a small bear once! Anyways, the thing would always growl at me and act like it was going to eat me. I had to yell and scream at the thing REALLY loudly to get it to back down. We weren’t friends. So, one time, my buddy was having a party at his house and we were all drinking and having a good time and the dog came in the house and we started playing with it. Before I knew it, I was chasing the dog around the house like I was a gonna get it and the dog was running away from me like a puppy.
Moral of the story?

I think "passenger in a car during a shooting" might be the character equivalent of the t-shirt test.
it needs to be much more general than that
because it needs to encompass all of the other things that make you say “hold up, they did what?!?”. Likes like run a dog fighting ring from their garage, have to register as a sex offender, ride around on motorcycles with loaded guns, etc.
but if you have the "passenger in a car during a shooting test" then you all need the
“registered sex offender test” and the “dog fighting test” and so on and so on until you have a list of 100 different character related tests for you to perform, which devalues the whole enterprise

I'm not laughing at all. I'm legitimately angry about that.
I hate it when umpires feel so inadequate that they have to screw with someone else by making the “right” call and showing everyone who’s boss. Ok, I get that you weren’t going to gift it to him. But that wasn’t even a close call.
Just wow. Geez.
Even if it'd be an actual tie at the bag -- which t wasn't -- the umpire should've given it to the pitcher then.
So yeah, that guy should be fired by MLB tonight. I don’t usually advocate officials losing their jobs over one play, but this is an exception to the ruel.
It felt to me like he didn't want to gift the pitcher.
So he predetermined that he would be out, and made the wrong call because he lost his wits when the pitcher got there.
That call is a worse decision than his choice of facial hair.
pffff
wow. you are way to accustomed to nba officiating. predetermined? really? your anger is getting the best of your reason
...when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].
You are obviously misunderstanding?
It’s human nature. He got stressed and knew there could be a big call, and that he didn’t want to gift him the perfect game. So when he saw the play, he decided that the guy would probably be safe, and it influenced the way he saw the play.
That is a call he's made thousands up thousands of times.
You can’t tell me that the spectre of the perfect game and the stress of the moment didn’t mess with him.
no i can’t. but you can say it did?
...when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].
That play was not close.
Joyce undergoes a lot of analysis, and his refereeing has apparently met the standards of the MLB. That was not even a particularly close play at first. I’m let to conclude that there was a mental aspect affecting his call.
yeah maybe so. all i know is i’m listening to guys that know joyce personally and know all aspects of the game better than you or i ever will. so i’ll take their word over any fans on this situation.
...when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].
How is that relevant?
For whatever reason, he messed up a call that he would make 99% of the time. I have to believe there’s a mental aspect when it’s an obvious call in an utterly obvious decision.
yeah you keep saying that. that’s fine. i’m saying no one i’m hearing that is more credible than you or i agrees with you.

Yeah, I tend to agree that the Jim Joyce's rationale on that play was to not gift the pticher.
That in and of itself, however, is a fireable offense, for it indicates an utter lack of competence on Joyce’s part and an inability to officiate correctly during high-prssure situations.

...when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].
I am pretty sure I didn't say that he was.
I said he predetermined that he wasn’t going to gift him the perfect game, and that mental state made him see the call differently.
I hate it when umpires feel so inadequate that they have to screw with someone else by making the "right" call and showing everyone who’s boss

I guess I wasn't clear enough.
That line is referring to the “not going to gift a perfect game” mindset.
I dunno bout that
"People that hate cats will come back as mice in their next life." - Faith Resnick
a few things:
1) there is a clear bobble on the play by Galarragga— if he’s deemed to have control as soon as the ball hits leather, then he’s out by a lot… but if he’s not deemed to have control until after the bobble, not so clear. I don’t know why nobody’s mentioned that. Joyce apologized, so clearly he thinks he missed the call, so I dunno.
2) Cabrera should have let the 2B take the ball, easy play if Cabrera covers first.
3) No idea why the scoring hasn’t been changed to E1— if he was ruled safe due to a bobble or due to missing the bag (as opposed to the runner just beating it), scoring it an error would be a possibility— at least he’d have a no hitter.
this one is more accurate.
...when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].
They're both the same.
the distance from foot to bag is essentially the same, it’s just a different angle so the distance looks smaller.

Obviously there are worse calls.
Is a bad block/charge call in the NBA finals that determines the title the worst botch of the year? No. But it’s the most impactful.
that exact call has been botched a ton of times. the only reason it is a big deal now is because of the circumstances. but that call is missed a lot. this isn’t a rare occurrence.
and i’m with skywaker. worse calls have happened. in the playoffs too.
...when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].
I take issue with this.
That call isn’t missed a lot. The first base umpire might miss some bang-bang plays, but that was as docile a call as something close gets. It was obvious to us on tv, let alone the guy standing there.
But regardless, you give the 50-50 call to the pitcher throwing the perfect game. If it was close, which it wasn’t.
i’ve seen that call missed a lot. every year. in the playoffs. in regular games. in special games. all the time.
...when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].
That call was not particularly close.
Not calling a semi-obvious out in a perfect game situation is insane. He should be looking to give the guy any out he can, like the ump did for Halladay.
i’ve seen that call missed a lot. every year. in the playoffs. in regular games. in special games. all the time.
...when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].
Don't you figure that an umpire should be at his best for the 27th out of a perfect game?
Maybe his attention should be perfect on a play where he has plenty of time to adjust and get into position? A play that doesn’t have many moving parts? I find it inexcusable to write this off as nothing.
i’m not writing it off as nothing. it obviously isn’t. but i’m saying that that call gets blown often. if it happened even as late as the 7th inning, no one would be saying anything about it. it was a perfect storm for controversy. yeah, it sucks. and yeah, it was a horrible call. but it’s nothing out of the ordinary. in my opinion.
...when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].
That play, with very few moving parts. The simple pitcher to first force out.
It is one of the easiest calls to make when it’s not a bang-bang decision. We can not just write this off as a simple error by the umpire. It reveals a flaw in both his skills as an umpire and the baseball system. How can you rob a player of a perfect game on a play that is easily visible by replay, when there is a system in place to handle replay?
Hopefully this is the linchpin that makes replay happen. To say that the pitcher-hitter duel is essential to the game and is not a waste of time, but replaying one play every few games isn’t is a little far out to me.
Not that I’m putting those words in your mouth.
ok. next time you see that play get blown in the 3rd inning, say the same thing.
it is the same call in the 3rd inning of a 5-5 game as it is in the 9th inning of a perfect game. and no matter what you say, yes, it is just a simple error. the ump thought the guy was safe. he was wrong. it is an error. nothing less and nothing more.
i already dread the instant replay talk.
...when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].
why? screw the pace/sanctity of the game or whatever, let’s make sure the calls are correct. there is too much $$ on the line for them not to be
maybe in the playoffs. this was a game between one of the worst teams in the league and a mediocre team that won’t make the playoffs. i don’t think there was that much money on the line.
...when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].

I won't say the same thing, because it won't be the 27th out of a perfect game.
I’m saying the umpire has to get that call right. Everyone knows the borderline call goes to the pitcher in that situation. No one is mad at him for calling him out even if he’s a little safe. So to call him safe was bizarre.

cricket either lasts about 8 hours or 5 days (two main forms of the game)
A new popular form only lasts about 3 hours though. Instant replay has little do do with the length of the game in any case – only a handful of calls are referred for video review in a 5 day test, let alone in the shorter forms of the game.

yep
you can’t review every close play at first, but instant replay for home runs and plays at the plate would be benefical
they do review home runs.
I was watching a Yankees-Mets game last week and they looked at the video to see if the ball went out.
at this point that is as far as they should take it
because once you start looking at safe calls at first then you almost have to look at it for stolen bases, pick off attempts, etc. Which will make the game even slower.
But how do you define those?
I mean, do you create a new system for the one case like this probably, I don’t know, ever?

How about each team gets one per game

"People that hate cats will come back as mice in their next life." - Faith Resnick
Leave it open for interpretation.
But make it clear that it’s for this type of scenario. Call it the Gallaraga Rule.
correcting it is my question
it’s easy enough to overturn it where the bases are empty, etc. But in the Flyers-Blackhawks game, the Flyers had the puck go over the line but not be ruled a goal. Then 1:30 and several Chicago chances later, the goal was given, and the time put back on the clock. So if Chicago had scored there, it would have been wiped out.
This could easily happen in baseball, where a line drive is incorrectly ruled fair, but the runner is gunned down at the plate. What do you do with the resulting play? The most important thing about sports (even more so than the better team winning) is that the next act is important—the next thing you see could swing the game. Playing portions under what is essentially a “probationary” period undermines this facet.

4.19
PROTESTING GAMES.
Each league shall adopt rules governing procedure for protesting a game, when a manager claims that an umpire’s decision is in violation of these rules. No protest shall ever be permitted on judgment decisions by the umpire. In all protested games, the decision of the League President shall be final.
Even if it is held that the protested decision violated the rules, no replay of the game will be ordered unless in the opinion of the League President the violation adversely affected the protesting team’s chances of winning the game.
Rule 4.19 Comment: Whenever a manager protests a game because of alleged misapplication of the rules the protest will not be recognized unless the umpires are notified at the time the play under protest occurs and before the next pitch, play or attempted play. A protest arising on a game-ending play may be filed until 12 noon the following day with the league office.

tom thibodeau was given a deadline to make up his mind. The deadline is the end of the week. It is prolly safe to say that Monty is gone.
The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Ash.
Who'd replace Monty Williams?
I could see Paul Allen wielding his influence by having Nate McMillan make an organizational hire, with Terry Porter getting a job on the coaching staff. If not Porter, McMillan may welcome back his old mentor, Bernie Bickerstaff, who’ll.most likely be looking for work once the Chicago Bulls hire a new head coach.
it depends on what is going on with Coach Lucas. If he can’t go, then I’d prolly want a big man coach. If he can go, then I’d probably want someone with some semblance of an exciting and effecitive offense

The weird thing is that he paused before calling him safe.
Like his brain and his body were having trouble coordinating. Most umpires do the out-safe thing pretty quickly… though he could always be slow with it I guess.
i think he could have easily called a meeting with the other umps, and had it changed fairly easily. i wonder why they didn’t do that. i mean that’s a huuuuuuge call
And no one would have had a problem with it, since it was obviously wrong.
No one would have protested them giving the guy his perfect game.

speaking of baseball
why do catchers allow runners to advance on the “indiference?”
isnt it easier to throw a guy out at second than to get a guy out at the plate?
Michael Jordan is the Nicolas Batum of America

most bases are stolen on the pitcher, not on the catcher. it really should be called pitchers’ indifference
why do they let it happen?
i would think that the risk of a batter getting a hit would outway the risk of the ball getting past the shortstop

by thomasikehara on Jun 2, 2010 6:59 PM PDT up reply actions
Often it's because that runner is irrelevant
Bottom of the ninth, tie game, 2 outs, men on first and third.
The catcher doesn’t care if the man on first steals second.
but if you get the guy out second
you dont need to risk giving up the walkoff hit

usually the team will be up by more than 1 run so the guy in scoring position isn’t important. meaning he wont’ tie or win the game.
...when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].
but every out is important
guys are more likely to get hits than errors on throws to second.
an out is an out—regardless on whether it was an out on an important run

by thomasikehara on Jun 2, 2010 7:02 PM PDT up reply actions
Say there's a man on first and you're up three runs in the bottom of the ninth, with two outs.
What the man on first does is completely meaningless. His scoring will automatically happen if the batter at the plate scores, assuming the player goes base to base. So whether he’s at first or second or third is meaningless. He’ll score anyway if the guy at the plate scores.
i understand that that run is meaningless
but isnt it easier to throw a guy out than to pitch to the batter?
Michael Jordan is the Nicolas Batum of America
draft Ekpe Udoh
by thomasikehara on Jun 2, 2010 7:06 PM PDT up reply actions
no. it’s not. cause bases are stolen off pitchers. if the pitcher isn’t holding the guy to first base and lets him get a big lead and a good jump, there is no way the catcher could throw him out.
...when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].
that the pitcher wont try to keep tabs on a meaningless run
gotcha, and if he did keep tabs on him, the runner wouldn’t try to steal; because its to no benefit to him either

Cost-benefit analysis.

The veteran ump regretted it.
“I just cost that kid a perfect game,” Joyce said. “I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay.”
“It was the biggest call of my career,” said Joyce, who became a full-time major league umpire in 1989.

His job is to use his eyes and make the call. His eyes told him it was the right call. I don’t really see how it is a mistake on his part. If he wasn’t watching, and just guess, then maybe he has something to apologize for.

why not? he has no one to blame but himself. he should hold himself accountable. he blew the call. he is to blame. he knows it. he admits it. that’s as it should be. for him to assign blame where it doesn’t belong, while the norm in this society, would have been one of the worst things he could have done.

yeah cause you shouldn’t let some idiot bat boy give you the wrong bat and then be a moron and try to hit with it. the hitter doesn’t have to take whatever the bat boy gives him. the umps don’t have the stuff you’re talking about to work with. so they should use that as a fall back when they screw up.

how about this old joke:
An old Indian chief sat in his hut on the reservation, smoking a ceremonial pipe and eyeing two US government officials sent to interview him. “Chief Two Eagles,” asked one official, “You have observed the white man for 90 years. You’ve seen his wars and his material wealth. You’ve seen his progress, and the damage he’s done.”
The chief nodded that it was so. The official continued, “Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?” The chief stared at the government officials for over a minute and then calmly replied, “When white man found the land, Indians were running it. No taxes, no debt, plenty buffalo, plenty beaver, women did all the work, medicine man free, Indian man spent all day hunting and fishing, all night having sex.” Then the chief leaned back and smiled, “White man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that!”

He was a great player. No question about that. But for many years, he wasn’t quite the player people thought he was, or was supposed to be. In retrospect, did Griffey really deserve his spot on the All-Century Team? Did he really deserve to win 10 Gold Glove Awards? Tomorrow, it will be said that Griffey was the best player of his era who didn’t use steroids. Was he really, though?
and sort of contradicts himself here
Actually, he might have been. Only three of Griffey’s contemporaries are credited with more Wins Above Replacement: Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, and Jeff Bagwell … and Bagwell’s just slightly ahead of Griffey, well within the margins of measurement error.

He spoofed the Japanese games shows by bringing a so-called dignitary by, putting his head in a transparent cone (like a dog sometimes wears) with a block of cheese on top, and dangled mice above his head, to be released if he gave a wrong answer.

Very good
It was a nice baseball I bought at the Kingdome.
I have a collection of signed baseballs (baseball is my fav sport). My most valuable are my DiMaggio and Ted Williams balls (both bought before their deaths). Probably worth $1000 each (and I paid a lot less than that for them).
I’ll never sell them though, its my collection.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
To be fair
I’ll never sell my basektball I bought at the Jewish Community Center auction signed by the entire 1999-2000 Blazers (even though a lot of them are douches) either.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
i have a signed nolan ryan baseball. my favorite piece of memorabilia is a signed picture of roger craig. i also have a clyde drexler signed basketball
they are all personalized (except the ryan baseball) though, so i can’t really sell them for any value
Mine are not
I bought most of them from a memorabilia shop in New York run by an orthodox Jew who sold baseballs for cheap since he made up the rest on selling coins, stamps and watches.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
And by cheap I mean $200 instead of $500 or so

I have one
I got it from him personally in 1989 (I was 8). First autograph I ever got in person and I’ll never sell it.

I also had the Upperdeck rookie card of his somewhere… still have it, I mean. Up in Oregon. That used to be like 100 bucks. Got it in a pack, luckily.

Upper Deck took the pricing from 50 cents for 12 cards, to 99 cents for 5 "modern" cards.
Afterward, kids couldn’t afford them anymore, and moved on to other pastimes. I mean, you don’t put a card in the spoke of your bike when it’s a dollar for 5 of them.
Once the interest in new cards disappeared, the demand for old cards vanished nearly overnight.
I used to have a Shawn Kemp rookie card too

With Ken Griffey, Jr. retired, there's only two men left in professional baseball who played at least one ...
game for the 1995 AL West Division Champion Seattle Mariners. One of them is Alex Rodriugez, while the other guy is currently toiling around in Triple-A baseball at the ripe old age of 40.
Who can name that “other guy” here? (Hint: The guy was part of a mid-season trade that got Andy Benes.)
Yeah, it was a real doozy.
Within the past couple of years, Salomon Torres, Randy Johnson, and Ken Griffey, Jr. have all called it quits. Tim Harikkala might still be out there somewhere, although I highly doubt it.
Griffey is the last sports superstar of my youth
To retire. Shaq is probably the closest to that left.

Best player of the modern era hands down
To be fair, I disqualify all the admitted PED guys, but even if you include them, Griffey in his prime is better all around, imo, than Bonds (defense slipped when the roids/power really kicked up) and A Rod (again, Griffey’s D was phenomenal).
Gotta say, Joey Crawford recognizes the importance of having a big 3rd quarter. He always brings it after halftime. - J.A. Adande
In head size? Yes.
But Griffey’s Batum-like defense puts him ahead, compared to Bonds’ Rudy-esque defense.
The author of "How to be a hero then a goat in less than one JD"
It doesn't matter if you prevent runs or produce them at the plate.
Bonds was the greatest offensive force we’ve ever seen.
Well, he's not Jack Wilson.
He’s not Jeter either, though. He plays the position fairly well, and at shortstop, that means you are a really good defender. Somewhere around average. In fact, his fielding for this year is right in the middle of the 32 starters, though it’s a smaller sample size.
But if you can play the position with any modicum of efficiency, you are doing good.
interesting. the eye test tells me that he’s one of the best fielding shortstops in the league:
http://colorado.rockies.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=8593475&c_id=col
Well, there's different ways to look at the debate.
Hanley Ramirez isn’t a great fielder; generally there are good fielding Jack Wilsons and good hitting Hanley Ramirezes. For Tulowitzki to be a slightly above-average fielder at a position at which there are so many defensive specialists is impressive.
He’s probably the best fielding star shortstop.
omg 22 season?! is he a legend?

ICHIRO WINS IT FOR GRIFFEY!
The 2nd best player in Ms history wins it for the Ms the day the best ever retires.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Edgar's status overall is hurt by Ichiro's defensive prowess
If he had just said the 2nd best hitter in M’s history…
Either way, it’s a fun argument.
Any discussion of Ichiro's defense
has to be annotated with the fact that he played a corner outfield position, one of the least valuable on the field… so I’m not sure that it’s enough to overshadow Edgar’s greatness at the plate.
I don’t think there’s a right answer… both are pretty great players and it’s hard to make too strong an argument for a DH.
Why don’t we check back when Ichiro is done?

No, I think the reason Deadliest catch is so interesting is the people. You just don't find the kind of characters you see in Alaska everywhere else. I'm born and raised in AK, so I'm familiar with the type. And maybe am the type.

There's something about deadliest catch that's special.
The relationships made and broken by the men. We see them change dramatically from season to season living so hard. Life and death decisions made every episode, and they are all laughing about it on no sleep for 2 days, chain smoking, fighting with each other, and just trying to survive. There’s just no other job in the world like it.

but it looks like there are a bunch more “Face of the Enemy” ones. Do you know when I start watching those?
The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Ash.
"Face of the Enemy" takes place between the first and second halves of Season 4
Don’t watch them.
If you’ve watched The Resistance, you’re ready to dive into Season 3.
For later reference, the details on Face of the Enemy:
Preceded by “Revelations”
Followed by “Sometimes a Great Notion”
I'm going to go find a proper order for you to watch everything, and I'll paste a comment here
So you can refer to it later.
Thanks
I don’t think there are any more webisodes. I didn’t see any.
The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Ash.
Correct order to watch BSG:
1. BSG Mini-series
2. Season 1
3. Season 2
4. Webisodes: “The Resistance”
5. Season 3
6. Movie: “Razor” (note: This movie is fairly standalone, takes place chronologically during Season 2, and could be skipped, but does have some info that comes into play later)
7. Webisodes: “Razor Flashbacks” (note: If you watch the extended version of “Razor”, you can skip this, they’re mostly integrated into the movie)
8. Season 4, Part 1 (Episodes 1-10)
9. Season 4, Episode 11 (“Sometimes a Great Notion”)
10. Webisodes: “Face of the Enemy”
11. The rest of Season 4 (Episodes 12-19, this is the end of the series)
12. Movie: “BSG: The Plan” (This is a flashback movie that fills in gaps in the series)
From there, you can check out Caprica if you’d like, but it’s completely different than BSG.
(BSG fans, feel free to correct any mistake I made, spoiler-free of course)

Wow, this is sad.
It’s audio from the umpire that missed the call. He mans up and is a little emotional, says that he flat-out missed the call and that people have every right to be mad.
I like him now.
Did he ever make an effort to talk to the other umps?
On replay, he handled the play poorly (ESPN did a surprisingly good job showing that he wasn’t focused on the play until the last second). If he didn’t check with the other umps to at least get their view, I have no sympathy for him.
I'm sad about the missed call.
But I just can’t be mad at a guy who owns up to his mistake. He said that he wasn’t supposed to get a huddle to make a safe/out discussion after the play… he probably should have.
What was he supposed to do, say the call was still correct?
The best thing that can come out of this is a push for an in-game instant replay system that doesn’t slow the game down.
And, in the end, I think everyone wins under that scenario.
I don’t feel too bad for Galarraga. He has one of the most infamous perfect games in history now… if we get replay out of this, I’d be happy.
I haven't thought about it enough to have a fully formed opinion.
But I suppose they’d enact rules similar to that of the ground-ruled double or an errant throw into the stands. If the situation did arise, there would be a predetermined number of bases granted to a particular player.
I was just thinking about this because I saw a goal given on review in the Flyers-Blackhawks game, but they had to wait like a minute to check the video. Playing all that time under “probation” gave me the heeby jeebies.
why can't we ever hear stuff like this from NBA refs?

David Stern hides them from the media typically
Every once in a while, you’ll see a quote from one though.
I'll admit to being wrong about his character.
It is still stunning to me that he was that sure about the call.
now why doesn't the nba do this?
allowing officials to face the media after the game would make things a lot more lucid.
It would probably be like listening to Rasheed Wallace
Except replace “Both teams played hard” with “It was a judgment call” or “It looked like the correct call live”.
I’d still like to see them face the media nightly though.
even if all that resulted of the interviews were PC non-answers,
i still want something that can restore credibility in nba officiating.
It doesn't have to be a press conference.
The NBA could assign a single reporter to ask questions after a game, which isn’t associated with either team. (If there’s not one locally, do it over video conference).
There are ways to let referees answer questions without it becoming a circus.
If it does become a circus, it says more about the reporters than the referees.
Serious question:
Can he return to Detroit? Will he need a security guard? Will he need to bring his own food and keep it locked up?
Yeah, I no longer think Jim Joyce should be fired now; though, MLB needs to overrule his call posthaste.
MLB is so far refusing comment.
If Cab is correct that he’s still scheduled for tomorrow’s game, I would not be surprised if he gets a suspension tomorrow morning.
I’m fine with firing him. It’s extreme, but it would get the attention of the umpire’s union, who might actually push for technological tools that will make their more accurate.
People get fired every day for making mistakes that cost their company credibility.
It’s very common.
He won’t be fired here. But if he was, I’d accept it.
If he really is one of the best umpires, a guy that the players like.
It’s pretty hard to fire him over one call. I do think he should be reprimanded.
Because it is meaningful only as a historical footnote, and therefore nobody is actually harmed by retroactive application?
That poor Cleveland player would be deprived of a hit!
Think of the poor Cleveland player!
No seriously, this is a no-brainer overturn of a referee decision, if they can find a loophole to do so.
i recall reading somewhere
that even the guy who got that undeserved “hit” was surprised by the safe call.
Yeah, even the blown call in the 1985 World Series wasn't as clear-cut as this with ...
regards to an overturn. Rarely — if ever — does a lapse of judgement of this magnitude happen on what would’ve been the final play of a game, but it happened here. And, once you factor in the historical significance, there’s no solution other than to right the wrong.
Seeing as this will follow him forever and he's received death threats...
He’d probably be pretty happy.
clearly they need instant replay or some kind of review for cases like this

The "we're having a meeting to decide the fate of the NBA" hype is driving me insane.
Though I did laugh pretty good when Amare invited himself.
Also, who invited Johnson?
that'd be a heck of a team
you could pretty much use missed shots as entry passes against them though, seeing as they’d be using minimum salary centers.
Here are my earlier comments on that issue.
“Yeah, Joe Johnson’s future production isn’t a sure thing. Anyway, I see that RealGM has linked another team to Johnson in the Miami Heat.
Yet, unlike with Brandon Roy, I could actually see Johnson taking a reduced role and deferring heavily to Dwyane Wade if he went to South Beach. Nevertheless, Pat Riley overpaying for a glorified wing would be an odd choice.
If anything, Wade needs a secondary superstar in the mold of Chris Bosh. Indeed, a 4 who can score in bunches — while doing it efficiently — would lower Wade’s workload and also add some much-needed balance to the roster. Beyond Bosh, other options — albeit lesser ones — include Amar’e Stoudemire, Carlos Boozer, and David Lee.
Then again, perhaps the Heat could re-sign Wade and also sign a couple of maximum-level players. To do that, though, it’d take some work to clear up the necessary cap space; however, a franchise like the Washington Wizards — which has a few trade exceptions — could hypothetically absorb the contracts of Michael Beasley, James Jones, and Daequan Cook.

Future First-Round Draft Pick (Via Toronto & Through Miami: Lottery Protected Until 2015)
*Acquired by Washington via a trade exception created from dealing Brendan Haywood on 2/11/2010 or, if the team withdraws all of its qualifying offers and renounces all of its cap holds by then, via cap space.
I think everything is in order here, although James Jones may have to waive a portion of his trade kicker in the first trade — which could squash the deal — plus, I’m not sure how quick the turnaround period is on trading back future draft picks. Yet, since the first trade and the third trade would be transacted during different NBA fiscal years, it should be kosher. I’m not sure, though.
Oh well, I’d be interested to watch how a theoretical Bosh/Johnson/Wade triumvirate — with a collection of low-cost role players flanking them — would fare against the Orlando Magic, the Los Angeles Lakers, and whichever organization employs LeBron James.
[…]
Y’know, if Pat Riley returns to the sidelines, then maybe he could convince Shaquille O’Neal to sign a one-year, minimum-level deal and settle his Cold War with Dwyane Wade. O’Neal, Chris Bosh, Joe Johnson, Wade, and Mario Chalmers.
More realistically, though, a low-usage, defensive-minded veteran like Ben Wallace would fit with Bosh, Johnson, Wade, and Chalmers. Wallace has lost a step or two, but he was still one of the few bright spots for an otherwise gloomy Detroit Pistons team this past season."

if any of you watched any of marbury’s ustream/justin tv vids from last year, you would recognize how accurate this quote is.
In 6 starts
Cliff Lee has had a strikeout per inning, an xFIP of 2.84, and 2.3 wins above replacement. That means his performance through one month was worth ten million dollars on the open market.
It is going to suck when he leaves. :( but at least my favorite player played for my favorite team at one point.
They don't have xFIP for his 1999-2001 years.
but Lee is pitching at the level Pedro did in 2002.
Pedro’s dominant years were sooooo good though. Amazing that he did what he did from the mound around the same time Bonds was magical at the plate.
his stuff was incredible. 98 mph fastball, followed by a 85 mph circle change with big movement and the same arm action. and that’s not even mentioning his knee-buckling curveball. insane.
Haha my chasm font wasn't thick enough.
Pedro was the skinniest pitcher ever. I’m surprised he could pitch in sub-70 degree weather.
hahaha ok.
lincecum could have had similar stuff to pedro now, but the velocity on his fastball has dropped in velocity since his rookie year. but if you add in his changeup, the best pitch in baseball, with his 94+ fastball and curveball…
As much as I love my dopin' fellow-Husky Timmy
he isn’t quite Pedro. He is tremendous though. It’s just too unfortunate that he has to be second to Cliff Lee. ;)
I'll take Roy Halladay, who -- in my best DtL impression -- will be the next ...
pitcher to reach 300 wins. That, of course, is unless C.C. Sabathia surpasses him, Jamie Moyer pitches until he’s 50, Andy Pettitte gets back on the juice — if he hasn’t already — or Mike Mussina comes out of retirement for a few more seasons.
he’s 33 and has 155 wins. he’s not reaching 300. he’ll get 200 pretty easy. maybe even 250.
i’m not sure there are any active pitchers right now that will reach 300. that’s really tough to do. still too early to tell with The Freak though.

They both are rushing to interview him before the Game 1 deadline passes for the Hornets.
We’ll know status on this by tomorrow night…
For Monty Williams' sake, I hope he earns the New Orleans Hornets job. Once Nate McMillan is fired ...
after failing to meet expectations next season, Williams’ stock would go down if he’s still his assistant. So yeah, Williams should strike while the iron is hot and get out of town—pronto!
I figured Monty was the inevitable interim coach in Portland, since Dean would be seen as Nate 2.0.
But it seems very likely that Monty’s out of here. And more power to him, very few people ever get to be an NBA head coach.
I hope Monty Williams gets the gig, even though I expect him to fail and be ousted rather soon ...
after the incoming owner, Gary Chouest, puts his stamp on the organization. Once George Shinn is officially gone, organizational lifers like GM Jeff Bower — as well as Bob Bass’ kids, Kelly and Kip, who are scouts — and the new coach will be on a short leash. Y’know, if it were up to Chouest, I bet he’d cave in and overpay to hire a guy like Avery Johnson to be GM/coach.

You're already calling your shot for the 2010-2011 Portland Trail Blazers season
and it will fail to meet expectations…..how sad

Who the heck knows
Maybe for once we don’t get an injury bug. Then at least we’ll know for sure if Nate is capable of taking us deep into the playoffs.

wait...
You doubt that it will live up to expectations
or
You doubt what I just said
?

I'm kind of buzzed, so yeah. I thought you were doubting my expectations, so I doubted ...
your doubt. Undoubtedly, that’s a lot of doubtfulness on my part.
your expectations make me sad

at this point
I think some new coaching blood might be good for the Blazers
The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Ash.
Not going to happen this offseason
Unless someone decides to try and snatch Nate from us for some reason, which would be beyond bizarre.

So my mind is pretty much officially checked out. I couldn’t stay focused on what my professors were saying today and it took me about 7 hours to write a 5 paragraph review for a book.

hahaha
I never, ever got sunburned as a child. I just tanned like crazy. My first ever sunburn was when I was probably 15 or 16 and I was on the beach for about 10 hours without sunscreen. The only thing that got burnt was my nose, and it peeled a tiny bit. Nowadays my shoulders will burn, but I’m still mostly a tanmobile.

same and my hair would get lighter
but until middle school now i burn and then tan

just wait til you're a senior, dude
my senioritis is so bad right now. I’m at the point where I’m just spewing out total bs for my papers because I don’t care enough to try and get a good grade.
"Bof teemz play hahd"
Getting it done FTW?
Or something like that.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
pretty much
my midterm paper in my English lit class was worth 50% of the grade (the final is worth the other 50%) and I did it the night before it was due and didn’t care about it and as I was writing I said to my roommate, “yeah, I can tell this isn’t a very well written paper and I quote from the book way too much.” I got a B+ and the professor’s comments were “there are some spots with pretty awkward syntax and you quote from the book a bit too much, but otherwise this is a pretty good paper.” So the two things I knew I did badly but didn’t want to fix were the only things he docked me for. I was satisfied.

One of the key skills at the PhD level
Is the ability to pull stuff out of your ass when you have about ten papers to write in ten days.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Yeah, I learned that one nice and early
my Freshman(college) year I took a writing course with an English course consecutively for all three terms. Which meant about 20 papers my first year in college. I got really good at MLA, specifically works cited pages, and BSing my way through almost any subject.

I love the new Word 2007 for that reason
Once I cite a source once in any paper, all I have to do is import is and it will cite in the right format every time.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Yup
You go up to your reference list and it has a list of everything you’ve ever cited. You import the ones you need and Word will format it in any of the major formats (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.).
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
GAH
HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS???
"Seek the wisdom of the ages, but look at the world through the eyes of a child."
-Ron Wild
I learned it out of necessity
As I note below, saves me so much time.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Citations take sooooooooo much time
This will aid me greatly next year.
"Seek the wisdom of the ages, but look at the world through the eyes of a child."
-Ron Wild
Go to the referrences tab in Word 2007
And its pretty self-explanatory.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
ooo that sounds nice.
I’ve only got Open Office, can’t afford Microsoft Office. One of my saviors my first 2-3 years of college, especially the first year, was the little pocket MLA handbook. I think the author’s last name was hacker or hackard or something. Used the heck out of that thing and it was only around 20 bucks.

If you ever do Grad school
You MUST invest in something that automatically does cites for you because it will save you a TON of time. It saves me about 30 minutes on even a four-page paper.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I will do Grad school, eventually
plan on taking a break for a few years to go to Japan and work to see if I really do love the idea of teaching there my whole life and then coming back. I know that there’s some website that will auto cite almost anything, it just needs to be in some internet database. I think I used it once, but I have a friend who swears by it. Open Office is cool, but it’s not that user friendly, so when I go to grad school I’ll probably make the investment into Microsoft Office

nah,man
college Senior. Pfffft. HS Senior was a lifetime ago. I only took 4 classes and then went to work, and I honestly don’t remember what 3 of those 4 classes were. I know one was Japanese and that’s it.

Lol
I’m on the 5 year plan.
Whatchya majoring in?
"Seek the wisdom of the ages, but look at the world through the eyes of a child."
-Ron Wild
Yeah, this is my fifth year too
Japanese with an Applied Linguistics minor which I may turn into a second major cause I really love it.
"Bof teemz play hahd"
I looove linguistics so much
You should do it! Two majors are better than one!

That’s my thought. I stumbled into the program (you have to take Intro to get any language degree, at least at PSU) and instantly loved it. I’ve since taken a course called “Language and Gender” and Phonetics(hardest class in my life, or at least hardest A in my life) and I was registered for Phonology this term but didn’t like the teacher on the first day and being in that class not only made put me on campus for 10 hours every Wednesday, it made me come to class Fridays as well, so I dropped it.

Doesn't matter for me
PSU finals are next week but all it means is I have to get a few forms filed before the end of next week.
When you’re done with coursework at the PhD level, terms don’t’ matter.

remember how I was happy when I received my financial aid letter?
There’s a reason why I’m still happy about it.
haha, yeah I bet
because our government is stupid and the way my parents’ finances are, I couldn’t even qualify for large enough LOANS, much less grants, for L&C. I still hope to go there for grad school though, if I do grad school in Oregon (or the US for that matter). What is your degree in?
"Bof teemz play hahd"
I just finished my freshman year,
so my major is the ever popular ‘Undecided’, although I’m very seriously considering a major in Foreign Languages and major/minor in East Asian Studies.
Ah, yes
the classic Undecided. Fortunately I never was in that boat. I took a year off to work and think about what I wanted to do instead of going right after HS. That sounds like a cool major though. I would have gotten something East Asian Studies related but so many of the classes that fall under that category also count towards my Japanese credits, so I couldn’t get/didn’t need both.
"Bof teemz play hahd"
ohhh woahhh!
dang then when do u start back up?
