OT: Goodbye, Manute Bol
He was a unique player, a great humanitarian, and a shining personality. I never got to watch him during his playing days, but love seeing him in youtube clips, and ejoy reading players' and fans' memories of him.

his career block averages are staggering
over 3 blocks a game in a little over 18 minutes a game in his career. crazy.

Here's his career stats.
The guy took 91 threes as a Golden State Warrior!
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

he averaged more blocks than points
I doubt we’ll see anyone achieve that ‘feat’ anytime soon.
Yea, his 3’s are classic.
RIP Bol
Played for 10 years at his height and frame

RIP

Sorry to hear about this.
I got a chance to watch him play when he was at Golden State. I lived in Berkeley and thereabouts during that time and well remember the zany but effective way that Nellie used him.

I'll pour out some beer for Manute tonight. A fun player to watch ( especially when he shot 3's ) and a great person. His humanitarian work was very inspiring.

Wow, I'm stunned.
I knew he was sick, but Bol doesn’t deserve this. A great, great humanitarian. He did so much to the people of the Sudan.
RIP, big guy.

RIP Manute
I remember going to a game vs. the 76’ers with a buddy of mine freshman year of high school and when Manute took the floor, in the late 1st quarter or 2nd, the entire Coliseum was abuzz. It wasn’t because of the game, it was because of the unique, fantastic spectacle of such a tall, thin man out there.
Truly the human fly swatter. And what a great guy to do what he did after his basketball career was over.
Anyone remember that SI photo of him underwater in a swimming pool?
"I come to you now, at the turn of the tide." -- Brandon "Gandalf" Roy, April 24th, 2010
When was this?
For a birthday present, my father took me to a game against the 76’ers (I was a huge Jeff Hornacek fan) and Manute was playing for them as well. Every time he got the ball outside, the crowd would shout, “Shoot it, Manute!” Once, he took it in from the three point line and dunked it…it got called off for traveling, but I still contend that the refs just didn’t believe anyone could make it that distance in only two steps. I think we won in overtime.
I really liked this article in SI
It’s an older older article (2006?) but it provides some great background about Bol’s roots and journey to the US; I find both fascinating.
“I had a good time with the American people. I hope they remember me as a good guy who played hard. I wasn’t Michael Jordan, but I was somebody called Manute Bol.”
Classic.

I saw him as a 6er
I loved him back in the day. I went to a game and saw him dunk on the Bulls. The whole place erupted! Unfortunately he got called for travelling and no one could hear the whistle it was so loud. Still, one of the most memorable players of my youth, and a great humanitarian as well.

The first thing that came to mind was his SNL Skit from way back when. It’s a classic. Here’s the link.
I went to a Cavs game back in the day
