So what is up with folks travel plans?, I am headed to the far NW corner of the lower 48 in late July via Portland,Lake Chelan,Everett and thence to the coast,l but I have a couple weeks to do it and the last time I fished out of Lapush I caught a 43 pound king salmon.is this 75 words? What do you have in mind this summer? Where would be a good place to do a bedge camp out?. I am really happy that part of my family is moving back to Portland and I am going to be a local again.

Reposting my worldcup preview for tomorrow since it was near the bottom
Points in parentheses.
Group D:
Germany (3) vs. Serbia (0)-4:30 AM-Serbia desperately needs this game if they are to have any chance of making it to the second round. Fat chance the Germans, who spanked the Socceroos 4-0 in their opening match will let that happen. Germany probably rolls.
Group C:
Slovenia (3) vs. USA (1)-7 AM-Hey Sasha Vujacic, I hope you enjoyed hitting those 2 FTs because its the last thing that you’ll enjoy in the next 24 hours. But seriously, the US would nearly lock up a second round birth with a win here but would still retain control of their destiny with a draw. The US is in the rare position of being favored in the World Cup and don’t expect them to waste it. They should win this but Slovenia’s D may make it difficult.
England (1) vs. Algeria (0)-11:30 AM-England were left Green in their last match as Green let in one of the softest goals you’ll see at any level. To make the manic depressive British press forget about this, England must win this convincingly and they should. Algeria is clearly the worst team in the group and the sort of team that, if England can’t beat, they don’t deserve to move on.

Yea, I know that.
I’m just reacting because if I were to be a fan of any baseball team anymore, it would be the Dodgers.
not me
i’d be a fan of the A’s, which means i’d have to hate you from what happened in 88 i believe…
And I'm still laughing about '88!
Do you ever get cold sweats when you wake up and swear that Orel Hershiser is still shutting out the bash brothers or that Kirk Gibson is really going to knock the ball out of the park vs. Eckersley?
You kids and your selective memories!
Only thing I remembered about baseball in the years that followed was the earthquake. That was a surreal experience.
i remember the 89 quake during the battle of the bay
more memorable for an oakland person, going up against crosstown rival, winning, and of course the earthquake, i was only in kindergarden then.
I had just started middle school then.
Watching them stop the World series because an earthquake was shaking up the bay was crazy. And, as a Cali-kid, I had been used to earthquakes but none were quite as dramatic as that one in my mind up until then.
i'm happy that nothing crumbled onto me
just some serious shaking, some books fell on my sister but that was it.

Shortly after Lakers declared NBA Finals victory, LAPD declared an unlawful assembly at Figueroa and Olympic. They began arresting individuals shortly after. "Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Honestly, good for him.
I can’t get worked up about this. And honestly, I think a number of teams would have let him into camp, so it doesn’t say much about his ability to play.
But hey, he’s inspired to keep trying to play, and that’s great for him. Unless, as noted above, it’s because he’s in the Antoine Walker situation.
I don't think he lived quite as large as Walker
Also didn’t hear about gambling issues, while Walker tried to play with guys who made him look poor with their earnings (Jordan, Barkley, …). He probably did blow up some of his money, but he also had a nice deal and I hope his agent told him that with his knee issues he should put some of those millions into stable investments.
Well, he did like to make it rain at strip clubs...
But hey, who doesn’t? That’s why I go to the bank to get $300 in dollar bills on Thursdays….er, stop talking, you fool!

Looney Tunes is getting a new show.
They’ve done a minor redesign (and what looks like a digital HD upgrade) to the characters. In some cases (Porky), it’s very obvious, in other cases (Bugs) it’s more subtle. Pictures in the link.
Possibly the best part:
In each new three-minute cartoon short, Wile E. Coyote is as determined as ever to catch the elusive Road Runner, now with an arsenal of state-of-the-art ACME gadgets to snag his quarry
Hmm, I don't like the new character design
Looks less timeless.
Looks like “Looney Tunes Kids” or something.

PHEW
I was at 97 points with 3 minutes left in the 4th quarter, after not playing most of the 2nd half because we were up by so much. I get back in with 55 seconds left, steal the ball on an inbounds for points 99, and finally scored points 101 with 5 seconds left. Phew!
I don’t like forcing it like this but it’s a rookie/sophomore game, why not huh?
#52
This was also a test
To see if this would count as the all-time record for the NBA, beating Wilt’s 100 points… since it was in a rook-soph game, it didn’t count. That is good.
This gives me something to shoot for. I’ll do this against the Wolves or something, to beat Wilt’s record.
#52
I'm annoyed though.
After the allstar game, I’ve been benched out of nowhere and down to only 8 minutes a game— it would do this every once in a while during my rookie year when my overall rating sucked, but not since I had the best rating on the team. I have the #1 overall rating in the league.
And now the sucky backup PG is playing 30+ minutes a night and I’m benched. And Oden is down to 2 minutes a game. We’re 53 and 0, and this will mess up all the hard work I did getting the stats just right.
What a dumb glitch. It was annoying when I was 40-something for my overall rating, but I understood why the computer did that. Now it’s gone too far.
#52
Wow, Ubaldo Jimenez is on pace to win 30 games.
I know it won’t happen and wins are a laughably weak statistic to measure a pitcher, but that’s nuts.
Guys I just had a great idea
What if we traded for Iggy… and Chris Paul?
Do you think we’d be good?
#52
He'd also get in the way of Bayless's development
And with Iggy getting in the way of Batum’s development, that’s just too many guys getting their development ruined. And then once CP3 and Iggy and Roy and Oden are too old in a few years, where are we? Screwing ourselves over with guys who coulda’ been great but are all developmentally screwed up.
It just ain’t worth it.
#52
But then Blake is in Patty Mills way and Outlaw is in Victor Claver's way!!!
THIS IS HARD, IDOL. How can we form a roster without anyone being in anyone’s way?!?!?!
#52
I think there is only one option.
We need a blockbuster trade! Let’s get rid of anyone who’s in anyone’s way. Then we can appeal the NBA rule to keep a 12man roster. Or we can appeal the NBA rule to play only 5 men on the court.
Wait. Maybe we could form a spin-off team. That way everyone can start and play 48+mins a game. Plus we could let the spinoff team go play in Seattle to make those guys happier. Win-win!
How do most people view the all-time top-twelve players in NBA history?
If I had to venture a guess, this’d be my estimation on how most folks view the tiers.
TIER #1
Michael Jordan
TIER #2
Bill Russell
Wilt Chamberlain
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
TIER #3
Larry Bird
Magic Johnson
TIER #4A
Jerry West
Kobe Bryant
Oscar Robertson
TIER #4B
Tim Duncan
Shaquille O’Neal
Hakeem Olajuwon
Personally, I feel that Bill Russell doesn’t belong on tier #2 — no matter his 11 championship rings — although that’s neither here nor there. Rather, this is just me being interested where Kobe Bryant now lands on the list of all-time greats according to the masses.
At any rate, though, Bryant has seemingly reached tier #4 after last night’s victory, with the potential to eventually land on tier #3. Yet, as it is, Bryant will never reach either one of the top two tiers, for he’s passed his prime and will soon decline.
Too early (or late) to argue.
I have issues with the top three tiers. But I like the bottom two tiers. That’s exactly where Kobe is. And he will not go above that tier either. No for anyone who actually saw any player of your top three tiers play. Kobe even at his peak just does not compare. Staying around longer and winning championships with a strong team won’t be enough.
How can anyone argue with the top tier?
Michael Jordan is #1 by himself, end of story.
I can see how there can be a debate with the 2nd tier and 3rd tier — for even I’m against Bill Russell being mentioned in the same breath as Wilt Chamberlain or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar from a statistical standpoint — yet, Jordan is the best of the best.
I hate Jordan and always will.
But of course he is #1 by himself. I just disagree with the placement of 2nd and 3rd tier. I’d think you were closer to correct if you just made one tier out of all of those guys.
Oh, I can understand that.
For some reason, though, I think most people view Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar a notch higher than Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, which is in part due to position and in part due to era. That’s particularly true for Abdul-Jabbar, who transcended two eras — as is noted by him winning titles with both Oscar Robertson and Johnson — as a result, longevitity is in his favor.
It's true.
Kareem has to get a nod for lasting so much longer than the rest of them (I think Jordan only comes close to Kareem in terms of longevity from the top of that list). Of course, the fact that he had Magic (and before him Oscar) to win those championships will always count against him the way Russell’s HOF (yet none of them cracked the top 4 tiers) teammates do. Wilt was a statistical wonder, but there was clearly something missing besides just HOF-caliber teammates. It took him years to achieve just his second championship even with a ridiculous “supporting cast” (e.g., the ’69 & ’70 Finals should have favored him pretty heavily). In fact, only Bird and Jordan from the top three tiers won only without having another player from that top 4 tiers (Wilt, of course, had the one championship in the ’60s with an amazing team but not including any of those guys and one with West).
But Magic and Bird have to be given credit for transforming the game, becoming a leader even amongst other great players on their team, and dominating during the time they were able to play. They sacrificed for the team and were unique amongst those in the top tiers (minus Russell) in their ability to make their teammates better consistently and to win out of the gate.
No, Michael Jordan is the clear #1. That's all there is to it.
Regarding contemporary players, Oscar Robertson = Dwyane Wade.
On a side note, Robertson’s base stats are highly inflated due to the quicker pace of his era and the porous perimeter defense he faced back then.
you got your side note from Bill Simmons’ book

I think this is a fair list as far as CW goes
However, if I were making the list, Shaq would have to be above Kobe, and Duncan is at least equal to Kobe. Shaq was sooo dominant for years teams were absolutely terrified to play him. And even though Duncan’s supporting casts for all his championships have been good, he was indisputably an absolute rock on both ends.
Also worth noting.
The NBA altered rules to slow Wilt and Shaq’s dominance of the game down. Not true with Jordan or the others on this list.
where would you put him. he is clearly in tier 2

It's funny.
Harlem Globetrotters (1958–1959)
Philadelphia/San Francisco Warriors (1959–1965)
Philadelphia 76ers (1965–1968)
Los Angeles Lakers (1968–1973)
For one of the greatest ever, it’s insane how he never played in one place more than 6 seasons!
Those numbers seem to suggest that all three teams have an even claim on him.
He was a pretty weird cat all along – I expect that he wore out his welcome in SF and Philly both.
Everyone put him in the role of the bad guy. He had a whole lot of self-esteem which led to some flaky behavior. But he wasn’t a real bad guy, I don’t think. But I sure hated him when he was a Warrior. I pulled for him on the Sixers, due to my Celtic hatred. – Elgin

He was on some really good teams in there too.
The 66-67 76ers and those Laker teams were so good. He definitely had some issues. Hard to get why he struggled to win so much. Even after Russell left, he kept struggling.
by that time he was pretty old.
He says he changed his game because he wanted to – but part of why he changed his game was that age was catching up with him. – Elgin

i think that it accounts for why every great player's game changes over time
you just can’t do the same things when you are 30 as you get when you were 25
Probably right.
But do great players also make conscious changes that just have to do with playing the game differently? Or does the wisdom these people suddenly come to have more to do with physical limitations?
i think that it has to be conscious because they need to refine different parts of their game
and that doesn’t happen without putting in a lot of time. I remember hearing about how Jordan changed the way that he trained so that he could play more minutes, albeit at a lower rate of activity than when he was younger

True, for all I've got to work with on Elgin Baylor is clips.
If you adjust for the differences in eras, though, the similarities are there.
Certainly similarities.
But Elgin ran the floor and finished better than Melo in addition to being a better rebounder.
Due to the quicker pace and worse efficiency of Elgin Baylor's time, his rebounding ...

Serbia - Germany had one of the worst refereeing I have ever seen
Or at least one of the most pedantic. Over a dozen yellow cards and a yellow-red card in a game that wasn’t unfair at all. Bravo Fifa, bravo Spanish ref. You have forgotten that soccer in essence is a run and fight game.
yeah, it just doesn’t look like we will be able to get anything going if we let slovenia’s d get set. seems to be much more action off of the long lobs to altidore/findley
Yep
the US needs to work much harder to get an equalizer here. And, to be honest, a win is infinitely better for them
"Bof teemz play hahd"
I heard he was terrible
(430 is too early for me to wake up for any team besides England). My dad woke up to watch it and he’s pretty sour about it. And I read it was the most yellows given so far this tournament. I’m sorry you had to deal with that…
"Bof teemz play hahd"
Germany still could have won it and the ref wasn't biased, he was just completely in over his head after establishing early on that he would give a yellow card for almost EVERYTHING
Yeah, but that's almost certainly going to be a problem for Germany, who tend to play a bit rougher, especially compared to Serbia
"Bof teemz play hahd"
Which gives some teams a disadvantage depending on who they get. There are e.g. an English ref and a guy from New Zealand and Germany who let a lot of things go on like is typical e.g. in the premier league or Bundesliga. And then there are some who blow the whistle way too much and/or react way too harsh for little fouls.
Thank God that twit Robert Green won't be playing keeper today.
Green’s error gifted the United States a 1-1 draw in the group opener in Rustenburg, and the West Ham keeper was unconvincing in a final training session at the Green Point Stadium on Thursday.
“Green was unimpressive in training in Cape Town on Thursday night,” said BBC Sport’s Phil McNulty. "He fumbled a couple of pretty routine shots from England goalkeeping coach Ray Clemence, which did not inspire confidence.

what a terrible first half. just abysmally bad.
i’m gonna go look at pictures of adriana lima to clear my mind
the printing press was invented, only after gutenberg was given pictures of lima from somebody in the future
I understand God wasn't even going to give humans eyes at first.
And we were to have no sense of sight but then God (all knowing and all) realized that Adriana would one day exist and decided to bless us by giving us the sense of sight to see her in all of her glory.
one time, in my greek history class, i read that recent theories suggested that helen of troy is actually adriana lima
She's more than worth starting a war over.
In fact, I’d preemptively strike Serbia for making someone as gross as Jaric not just touch that perfection but put his troglodyte off-spring inside of her.
This morning I finally saw her preggo pics.
I’d avoided them last year. She is hot no matter what but how could she spawn with a troll? Yet even that doesn’t make her less hot because it means that anyone (who looks like a troll but has mad bucks and is an international sports “star”) has a shot with her.
well,
i guess the US is done for right? mind if i hope on the English bandwagon, GB?

‘cept a big problem is that a big part of the US’s problem is inability to convert. Findley is all speed and Altidore all strength—neither has enough skill or composure. Bring in Buddle.
We are getting destroyed in midfield—only Bradley is trying to control play and he has nobody to help him out. That’s b/c we have two strikers, a winger (Donovan) and a support striker (Dempsey) so our only option has been to kick the ball long to one of those guys.
and long balls haven't been doing very well at all this Cup. And much of that is blamed (probably rightfully) on the ball.
"Bof teemz play hahd"
i only saw the first 3 minutes where Dempsey accidentally hit the guy in the face and the guy had an ice pack so his pretty face wouldn’t get bruised. he left the game. the pansy.

of course I'm speaking PNW
though i suppose to be fitting for the situation on hand, we could toss someone from the top of a proper English castle. Maybe we’ll throw the haters who try to join the bandwagon off a building in York, and they can join the other ghosts in that city.

you should take it. if everything goes well, that’s a sign we’re getting 75-80 games + playoffs out of Greg this year. and if you end up next to a hot woman, that means he’s averaging a double double.

lawl, i'm stupid
USA with have five points to Slovenia’s four if the USA beat Algeria and England beats them as well.
"Bof teemz play hahd"
how so? then there would be a 3 way tie. i don’t see any way england doesn’t gun for winning their next two
it depends how many goals England beat Algeria by
cause as it stands we’re 1 goal down on goal differential.
"Bof teemz play hahd"
Yeah, true. England just needs to score a lot on Algeria
cause if we win today and tie Slovenia anything less than 2-2, Slovenia will win based on goals scored
"Bof teemz play hahd"
right, but I mentioned above, incorrectly, that the US and Slovenia would be tied and depend on goal differential
which was wrong, because USA will have 5 points if they beat Algeria and if England beat Slovenia, Slovenia ends up with 4 points.
"Bof teemz play hahd"
Yes, very true
Slovenia has great defense, but I think England is a bit stronger at striker/finisher than the US. In my biased opinion…
"Bof teemz play hahd"
Much better. The U.S. are just team chaos—terrible defensively with some good individual talent and a lot of spirit up front, but not a lot of cool heads anywhere (except Bradley).
England need to be a lot more positive vs. Slovenia than they were vs. the U.S. It was weird to watch England try to defend a 1-0 lead when there were definitely more goals for the taking.
that pissed me off
as soon as Gerrard scored early England were happy playing kickball. Stupid stupid thing to do against any team, much less a team like the US. They’re saying they plan on attacking a lot and “scoring a lot of goals” so hopefully they will. ALso, Rooney was nearly invisible against the US and he’s done alot of talking this week, hopefully he can back it up

There was a lot of holding going on with about 6 players clinging to each other, but from both sides
Really the only one who was not doing anything was the guy scoring the goal.
But unlike with offside, there are no passive players in such situations. He must have thought some holding was worse than the others.
I thought that I heard a whistle long before Adu touched the ball (almost as soon as the ball was kicked)
so I have no idea what the ref thought that he saw
rightfully so. It was disgusting. I'm pissed off and I don't even care too much for the US.

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Bad refereeing this morning. Game 1: Spanish ref trying to deal with Bundesliga and Premier League players gets all officious because he doesn’t like how they play and ruins the game with a soft red. Game 2: the old argument about refs from the non-European and South American leagues sucking rears its ugly head. Pretty abysmal all around.
As the quality of play has gone up
The quality of reffing has gone down.
Can we have the ref back from the US-England match?
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
So here's the situation
Assuming England beats Algeria.
US must win obviously but.
US win by more than 1 goal-US through no matter what thanks to goal differential.
England beats Slovenia-US through.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Now if England lose or draw
A US win puts them through, period but that seems unlikely.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
if we beat Algeria, but England beats Algeria and then England-Slovenia draw like 5-5, we lose out on goals scored.
Not if we win by 2
Because then our GD is +2 and Slovenia’s is only +1.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
in that scenario
wouldn’t any non-tie in the England/Slovenia game result in the US advancing (assuming the US wins)?
England/Slovenia winner- 7points
USA- 5points
England/Slovenia loser -4points
Algeria-0points
Yup
The US really should be able to beat Algeria by 2, that’ll take care of it for sure.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Algeria didn’t really look any worse than Slovenia in their first match. You have more faith in the team than I do, especially after watching that first half.
They'll have to attack though
That’ll be good.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
there is actually a scenario where England, Slovenia and the US all end up in an exact tie on 5 points, +1 goal diff and 4 goals scored— England beats Algeria 1-0, USA beats Algeria 1-0, Slovenia and England tie 1-1.
And then we have a coin flip
That’d suck.

Here are the official rules
“The ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows:
* a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
* b) goal difference in all group matches;
* c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows:
* d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
* e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
* f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
* g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee."
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
wouldn't England lose out on part d?
in the games between England, USA, Slovenia in that situation England will have scored 2 goals and USA and Slovenia 3 each.
Right?
oh, you are right. the England 1-0 Algeria, USA 1-0 Algeria, England 1-1 Slovenia scenario sends England home on part f. Very true.
If England beats Algeria by 2, that’s moot of course.

my real thought on the U.S.-Slovenia game
I was pretty disappointed in the U.S. performance. I thought we had outgrown the “heroic draw” and OMG look at them hustle!!! with the draw vs. Italy last year (which was genuinely heroic). Was looking for a touch of class and for us to look something like a cut above. Outside Bradley (and one moment from Donovan) we didn’t have that at all. So the U.S. still has a lot of growing to do.
besides that leaky defense, Donovan needs to get on the ground to knock that ball in while it was still 1-0.
I still dislike the Findley-Altidore combo, because it forces Donovan to play further back than he is comfortable—he is stronger higher up the pitch IMO.
Don't have to worry about Findley in the next game
Horrible yellow card.

An England tie or loss today means any win over Algeria sends to US through.. BUT given that we need to beat Algeria regardless, is it more desirable for England to blow out Algeria by about 20 today to eliminate them and totally demoralize them?
Also, with Germany losing today, its no longer clearly an advantage to finish 1st in the group rather than 2nd.

I thought this was a good point by a poster on the Guardian blog
It was a dreadful refereeing performance, but the officials are not helped by the cards rules themselves which do not do the job for which they were intended, namely to keep the game flowing, eliminate cynical hacking and maintain the game a spectacle. None of these three were achieved by Alberto Undiano’s double digit card performance today. It’s time to get rid of yellow cards altogether, never mind the two-yellows-and-you’re-off rule. Where the hell is the sin bin in football? It is a significant punishment for which the team which goes down to 10 men usually suffer, but doesn’t represent a permanent handicap which ruins the game as a sporting (as in fair) spectacle. The balance gets restored, the guilty player suitably chastened and the game can begin anew without rancour. I guess its all a bit too obvious for FIFA to implement
He’s addressing the Germany-Serbia game, but it’s a generally applicable point.

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Btw to someone who watched the Germany match
Was the first yellow on Klose legit? The second certainly was.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Not really
Even for the second one the player who got tackled said he himself had hit into the ground as the main reason for falling and Klose had made an effort to hit the ball. It was not a brutal foul, nor was it a really hard or unfair game. The referee just got trigger happy with his yellow cards after initially establishing he would show one for about every foul. I remember dozens of way more hard games in recent world cups that saw a laxer interpretation of the rules.
And if the ref had been consistent, he also would have had to send off Lahm after he called a second foul on him but showed no card (Lahm had clearly hit the ball first, which is a clean tackling). As well as some Serbian defensive player.
It just was too much, though Germany has it’s own performance and bad luck to blame. 1-0 one minute after Klose was sent off from a pretty weird combination of plays. Crossbeam kick before the half by Khedira. They were dominating even with 10 players for the first 20 minutes of the second half, but mainly Podolski missed 3 great chances narrowly. And the penalty kick, which he took maybe thinking he could make good for his missed shots though Schweinsteiger would have been the #1a designated shooter (made 3 in last test game). And then the substituted players didn’t really change anything.
I think they’ll be really focused to beat Ghana now though, and still advance. It reminds me a lot of 2002 (draw after 8-0 win in first game, then to the finals) and the 2008 European Championships (loss to Croatia after win in game one, on to the finals).
And they likely have to win that game
Since Ghana and Serbia should both beat down the Soccerroos.

i don’t think algeria has been very impressive at all to be honest. their wings have been able to get the ball up the field, but their play once they get into england’s zone (is this only a hockey term?) hasn’t been very good. they haven’t given themselves any chances to score, it seems. but, like i’ve said before, i’m not much of an expert on soccer so take my opinion for what it’s worth.

apparently they called a foul on the guy who scored, but as you can see, he didn’t touch anybody. i’ve also read that the foul was on bocanegra, but he was being fouled by a slovenian player.
WE WUZ ROBBED
And ESPN put up offsides
Which made no sense.

it was a very perplexing call. about 8 players were probably technically committing fouls on the play, but like 6 of them were Slovenian (including the ones committing the most obvious fouls) and the guy who the foul was called on (the goal scorer) was definitely NOT committing a foul.
The ref just didn't want us to score.
I rewound and re-watched it a few times. It is mystifying.
Well, that sucks. At least we tied.

haha, good point
but he IS one of the best players in the world, that’s what freaking sucks. If he was just some kid with potential I wouldn’t be as worried, but he’s excellent in league play and he’s just choking so badly right now. He was injured a ton this year, and he has said he’s fine now, but I can’t believe he is with the way he’s just sort of stood around so much.

Argentina, Netherlands and Brazil look like the class of the tournament, along with Germany and Spain despite their losses.
England does not want to draw this match. You do not want to be in a must win situation against a Slovenian team that knows it advances with a tie. Surprised England isn’t more desperate here.
algeria’s defense is so sound, yet they are so terrible on the attack. it’s going to be very difficult for the us to win by 2+ goals

No, Andre Iguodala's contract is decent value.
LaMarcus Aldridge’s contract is an absolute farce, though.
would be in prime position to win the group. still a legit chance to win the group though… and everybody could go home, England very much included.
I think so. If they beat Ghana by 1, they’ll have a +4 goal differential, which would be enough to win the group unless the Serbs beat the Aussies by 4, which I don’t think will happen. Of course, there’s some possibility they tie or lose vs. Ghana (with the latter result sending them home).
yeah, we are actually in position to root for a draw between England and Slovenia now.
Also, I just realized that there’s now a scenario where the USA advances with a tie against ALG, should SLV beat ENG or if they play to a draw and the US ends up with more goals than ENG.
yeah, but with the England/Algeria draw
had the ref not botched the disallowed goal, the USA would have guaranteed a spot in the knockout rounds.
nope, not quite. Even without that disallowed goal, an Algeria victory over the US would have given both 4 points, with goal differential tied (if the Algeria win was by 1) and Algeria holding the head to head tiebreaker. So, it would still have been possible for Algeria and one of England or Slovenia to go through ahead of the US.

wow, the English press will not be pleased. There will be huge pressure for them to beat Slovenia. USA fully in control of its own destiny, but based on this it won’t be easy.
So here's the deal
For each team:
Slovenia: Advance with a draw, a win, a draw in US-Algeria and a draw with an Algeria win of less than 3 goals (thanks to goals scored).
US: Advance with a win or, if Slovenia-England draw, a draw.
England: Advance with a win, they lose in any case involving a draw thanks to goals scored.
Algeria: Prayer. They can advance with a win and some other things.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

Algeria will be tough although the US should be able to be more creative than England.

its without question the greatest comeback in US Soccer History, and given that not counting the first world cup in 1930, the US has won a total of 4 world cup games (1 in 1950, 1 in 1994 and 2 in 2002), its certainly in the top 5 wins in the last 80 years! It would probably rank 5th on that list though since the other 4 were a stunner against England in ’50, a win over Columbia on US soil that was part of the catapult to respectability, another shocker over Portugal and a win over hated rival Mexico in the knockout stages.
They said today that was only the 21st time in World Cup history
That a team had come back from multiple goals down and gotten any result.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
so the ref stole what would have been our 5th greatest win since 1930! and the only one to happen in comeback fashion!
Only US win from 2 down before today was a friendly against Saudi Arabia
This would and should have been the second.

Wayne Rooney, the most overrated player to never score a world cup goal yet ;)
Though he still looks hampered by injury. The whole English team plays astonishingly slow compared to your regular Premiere League games. The defensive midfielders stand too far back, the wingers who are great sprinters (usually) can’t get past anybody, and once they get anywhere near the penalty zone they shoot long shots over the goal. Only 2 or 3 times they combined quickly, and it immediately got dangerous. Algeria must be mad that their starting goalie dropped that tied game against Slovenia, otherwise everybody would be tied now.
England looks tired
I don’t know any other way to say it. Tired and lacking in creativity.

Nate Silver's model says:
Should the 0-0 result hold, #USA United States will have about a 70% chance of advancing, #SVN Slovenia about 65%, and #ENG England only about 55%.
Likely because the scenario where USA and ALG tie means England must beast SLV to advance.
Yup and if the US iwn
England cannot win the group, although they really could play any one of GHA, SER or GER.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
getting second in this group may end up being better off
with Germany’s mistake today they aren’t guaranteed to get first. If anything Ghana is looking more likely to get first, especially if the beat Australia tomorrow.

Speculative group play question:
What happens in the event that every game in a group ends with a draw? Or, more realistically, the two second seed teams end with the same record and the same GF/GA?
head to head is next. eventually, it can come down to a coin flip. Skywaker9 posted the rules above. Repost:
"The ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows:
* a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
* b) goal difference in all group matches;
* c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows:
* d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
* e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
* f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
* g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee."
If no one scores in any of the 6 matches in a group
They basically hold a lottery.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
So in this case should both matches on Wednesday end in draws
The US advances based on scoring 2 more goals.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
But that is why, for example, Germany's loss today isn't horrible
They still have a +3 goal differential and so if they beat Ghana probably win the group.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
if every game in the entire group ended with scoreless draws, that would be a fun one for FIFA to sort out.
Rock paper scissors for the right to advance?
Why Not?
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
As mentioned above, a team once really advanced because they had fewer yellow cards
I can’t come up with the specific case though
I haven't heard of that
but this is my favorite World Cup group of ALL-Time.

Except France
And probably South Africa and Australia.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
yep, England and Algeria will be in true must win situations.
The US must treat its match like a must win, but there’s the chance it will turn into another “can’t lose” scenario. Of course, that’s why they play the games simultaneously.
The US has to win the game
Also, winning it gives them a chance, should Slovenia fail to win, of finishing top of the group and probably getting an easier path in the second phase of the World Cup.

This is great
For some reason, it seems to me that men tend to cook more often when it comes to a BBQ than a stove. I have no explanation why…
However, in order to be able to BBQ like a pro, here are the 12 golden steps.
1. The woman buys the food.
2. The woman makes the salad, prepares the trimmings and the desert.
3. The woman prepares the meat, marinates and places it on a board with the necessary tools and sauces.
4. The woman carries it out to the man who is placed next to the BBQ with a beer in his hand.
5. The woman stays out of the mandatory 9 feet zone where a surplus of testosterone and other male activities can take place without intervention of the woman.
6. The man places the meat on the BBQ.
7. The woman goes in to set the table.
8. The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat looks good. He thanks her and asks her if she would mind getting him another beer while he’s flipping the meat.
9. The man takes the meat of the BBQ.
10. The woman places the meat on the table that has been set by her.
11. The guests praise the man for his skilled cooking.
12. The woman clears the table and does the dishes after dinner. The man takes another beer.
There you are, good luck.
Peace

Also lets not forget that when Magic retired the first time at age 31(the same age as Kobe is today) that he seemed to have a bunch of basketball left in him as he finished 2nd in the MVP voting. It also isn’t inconciveable that with Magic that the Lakers would have gotten to another finals or two either.

Help me out BE.
I’m caught in an argument on DT where I’m defending Kevin Pritchard and I thought I’d ask you guys for help in constructing a good rebuttal.
The thread thus far:
I was looking over the Kevin Pritchard’s draft results with the Blazers and I now think he doesn’t deserve a new contract. His reputation is based on the great draft-day trades in 2006 that netted Roy and Aldridge but he can’t take full credit for those picks. Pritchard was only the assistant GM; Steve Patterson was still Blazers president and GM. (And if he does get credit, he also takes blame for blowing late first round picks in 2006 on Joel Freeland and Sergio Rodriguez).
Since Pritchard’s been in charge, from 2007 to 2009, all of Paul Allen’s bought draft picks, all of those draft day trades, have produced only one really good player who’s performed better than his draft position: Nicholas Batum. The rest of the picks are pretty damn mediocre.
2007: Oden, Rudy Fernandez, Petteri Koponen, Josh McRoberts, Taurean Green
2008: Jerryd Bayless (Batum)
2009: Victor Claver, Jeff Pendergraph, Dante Cunningham, Patty Mills
The jury’s still out on Oden and Claver but those are not impressive results. Portland’s over the cap and has no significant draft assets to improve their team. There’s no wonder why Portland would try to interview Presti
My rebuttal:
Pritchard gets a ton of credit for the 2006 draft; it’s basically what secured him the position after Patterson was fired. It’s not something that should be overlooked when looking at his accomplishments. In the end, he turned Sebastion Telfair, Theo Ratliff, Victor Khryapa and Ty Thomas into LaMarcus Aldridge and Randy Foye. He then turned Randy Foye + cash into Brandon Roy. That’s a pretty remarkable course of events.
His counter:
Pritchard is great at media relationships and he’s great at taking credit. The trades in 2006 worked out so he takes credit in the media, and Steve Patterson, the man in charge, is ignored.
But what about the Blazers’ trade in 2005, trading the third pick (Deron Williams / Chris Paul) for the 6th pick and 27th pick (Martell Webster and Linas Kleiza)? Pritchard takes no blame for this disaster even though he was director of player personnel.
Rudy Fernandez had a nice rookie year but he was pretty bad last year. He’s unhappy with the Blazers and seems to want to sign with a Spanish team. That’s not good return for a first round pick.
Pritchard drafted Petteri Kopenen over both Landry and Big Baby. Bayless was picked one spot after Brook Lopez and four spots before Robin Lopez. He had a disappointing rookie season and was a little better his second year.
Pritchard gave up 2 second round picks to Dallas to move up from 24th to 22nd to pick Claver. Pendergraph and Cunningham were drafted before Dejuan Blair and Jonas Jerebko.
And like I said, if you’re going to give him credit for 2006, he’s also got to take blame for using first round picks on Joel Freeland and Sergio Rodriguez.
There are several holes in his arguments, but help me clarify my reply.

But the other parts of the argument make some sense. He does need to take responsibility for that which wasn’t great also.
Sergio Yes... but Freeland still looks like he could be a viable back-up if he ever comes over
both Freeland and Claver were taken with the understanding that we wanted value we could stash oversees for a couple years
.
Bayless over the Lopez’s is cause we have Oden and Pryz in teh middle and needed a guard…
.
I’d take DC over Jerebko still, but EVERYONE passed on Blair due to his knees… and yes, as good as KP is, there’s only one RC Buford

Yup, of all KP's moves
that is the one that really took the shine off. Not a fan of LMA’s extension, either.
this is probably too nuanced, but you also need to consider where he was drafting from
you can’t expect to continually trade up into the top 5 and get the best player in the draft every year. In other words you can’t always hit home runs, sometimes the best you can do is get singles. And in the 3 drafts where KP has been in charge he got Oden (a game changing center when healthy), worked his way into Batum through a pretty convoluted path, Bayless isn’t a terrible piece, and then in 2009 he picked up some good pieces. What else do you want him to do?
Well, I can give pieces
2005— John Nash was GM. Pritchard was and is known for saying we should draft Paul. Nash didn’t want to because he loved Telfair. That is a known story.
Before the 2006 draft, the media was told KP was running it. He engineered it— Patterson was a suit and a joke and doesn’t deserve the credit for imaginative trades that were never part of his repertoire.
Joel Freeland is young and has one of the best PERs in Euroball. He looks pretty good.
Everyone passed on Blair for various reasons. Who gives a crap about Jerebko on a team with Batum, Webster, Roy, etc.
Claver is a good young Spanish player; taking a flyer on Euro talent with late 1st round picks isn’t really something too serious, even if it doesn’t work out. When it does (Rudy’s rookie year and Batum) it’s awesome deals.
The Sergio pick didn’t go anywhere, but 2006 sucked late in the draft anyways and it was just to see if he could work out. Freeland, like I mentioned above, doesn’t count as a mistake thus far because he has been actually really good in the ACB.
On a team with Oden and Przybilla and now with Camby, Robin Lopez isn’t really someone we need. We hope/hoped Bayless can be the PG of the future. That remains to be seen. We got him for Jarrett Jack and Brandon Rush— not a bad deal if one thinks Bayless will be quite a bit better than Jack.

Also
Using the guys that every team passed on (Landry, Blair, Jerebko, you can throw Marc Gasol in there too) is pretty weak… might as well fire everyone.
#52
This too
It’s not fair to set KP’s bar 5.6 times higher than you would for any other GM. No one is going to identify every diamond in the rough. To me, it’s on par with being upset with a guy shooting 40% on threes because he’s not shooting 60%.

Yep, well said
Late 1st round picks (>20) and 2nd round picks are a total crap shoot. If you can get a guy that pans out that’s great, but it doesn’t happen that often.

KP has also gotten oodles of 2nd round picks
Such as the Omar Asik-for-3-second-rounder-draft-picks from the Bulls.

And Re:Rudy
He can’t just sign with another team, he has a normal rookie scale deal. He was good as a rookie; he could easily be that good again. His rookie year play and shooting is worth the late 1st round selection.

I'm comfortable saying without Rudy's rookie year play, we don't get 54 wins that season

Curious
Authorities are asking students, teachers, parents and anyone who was at Skyline School on June 4 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to answer the questions, which can be viewed here. The questions ask whether Terri Horman was seen at the school and at what time. They also ask whether they remember seeing the white Ford F250 pickup that Terri Horman drove that day to school.
The pickup has since been towed from the family’s home. Gates said the family requested that it be towed because of mechanical problems, and that the towing was unrelated to the investigation.

so, don’t spread this too far (ie McC C), but I heard a rumor from a trusted source that the Giants medical guy who supposedly cleared DeRosa before the Giants signed him never actually cleared him, and because his name is getting dragged through the mud, the Giants keep giving him all kinds of free stuff— premium tickets and stuff— so that he won’t come out and say anything.

finish season 2 of Breaking Bad yet? Watch any more Dexter? See any good movies? I’m bored trying to finish my work and this JD is deaaaaddd
"Bof teemz play hahd"
hahaha
yes i did finish season 2 of BB. loved it. i have a long wait for season 3 now. but Walter White is awesome. I can’t stand his wife either. the biggest stretch for me in this show is convincing myself that Walter feels bad about what happened with his wife. i was thinking, “sweet! now he can make mad cash and be the man!”
i have watched more Dexter. still not that in to it. I just don’t like the character very much. i’ll keep watching the first season and see if it gets better though.
haven’t seen any really good movies in a while. I think i’m gonna watch The Warriors tonight. haven’t seen it yet. I’m also just about done watching the first series of Blackadder. i like this show. you ever seen that?
"My love winks, she does not bother / She knows too much to argue or to judge"
by DrivetheLane on Jun 18, 2010 7:27 PM PDT up reply actions
Man, our theory that we are the same person just doesn't hold up if you don't start liking Dexter...
And yeah, his wife is a see you next tuesday for sure. I fully hate that character. Sucks you’ll have to wait so long for season 3, I hope AMC does a marathon sometime this summer so you can DVR it.
I feel like I’ve seen a bit of Blackadder before, and yesterday when you mentioned it was on instant queue ,I tossed it into mine. I’ve got almost 200 things in there now… but about 50-60 are foreign films which I can’t watch while working, so I’ll get to Blackadder fairly soon, probably.
I have two reportedly excellent movies sitting at home from Netflix, Rififi and City of God, but i haven’t had time for either of them and it doesn’t look like I will this weekend. Hopefully I can squeeze one in soon though, cause I hate wasting my subscription with films just sitting on my tv stand for weeks.
"Bof teemz play hahd"
those are both good movies. I haven’t seen City of God in quite a while, but i remember it being good.
I have Amores Perros and The Warriors right now. my instant play queue isn’t nearly that long, only about 70 or 80. and i have another 90 in my regular dvd queue.
i’m hoping for the marathon as well. but i don’t see anything on their schedule at the moment.
and yes, it does seem that Dexter will be the final nail in the “we aren’t the same person” theory. i’m just waiting to see if my theory that he is the Ice Truck Killer comes true. but i think the last episode (it was the one with the cuban refugees) may have disproved my theory. i also don’t find the acting all that great. except for Michael C Hall, but i don’t really like Dexter anyway so….. i just can’t seem to care about what’s going on is all.
"My love winks, she does not bother / She knows too much to argue or to judge"
by DrivetheLane on Jun 18, 2010 7:36 PM PDT up reply actions
I really don't remember if I loved it in the beginning or not
I just remember being so moved by the finale and literally sitting with my jaw down at how well they wrapped things up. I don’t want to spoil things for you, so I won’t say more than just make sure you watch it til the end.
Also, the acting gets quite a bit better after the first season. Deb especially gets a lot more comfortable in her character and in the later seasons has some scenes where her acting(and character) has literally brought me to tears just because of how powerfully she portrays it.
Dexter also becomes much more rounded out as the season progress and finishes, and in later seasons even more so. Man, I wish I remember if I liked it right away or not so I could tell you to just wait until the end and guarantee you’d be happy then.
"Bof teemz play hahd"
i’m glad to hear about Deb. i do find her the most interesting character, but the acting hasn’t done it justice thus far. there are hints, but nothing consistent. i’m glad it’ll get better.
i’ll for sure keep with it through the first season. i think i’m only on episode 5 so, barely half way through. if it’s gonna take a dramatic turn, it should be coming in the next episode or two i’d think.

The one coach Jerryd Bayless had who put an emphasis on defense, Kevin O'Neill, clashed with him ...
‘cause of “Jay-Bay” being undisciplined on that end of the court. For Bayless, he’d get off on a free-wheeling coach like Don Nelson — who’d let the kid run amok — alas, the Golden State Warriors already have Monta Ellis on its roster.
The Memphis Grizzlies are probably the one realistic destination where Bayless could go and receive carte blanche to play like a spastic loose cannon. Yet, dealing Bayless and salary filler (e.g., Jeff Pendergraph & Dante Cunningham) for Mike Conley, Jr. would be terrible value. I’d much rather move Bayless in a big-time consolidation trade, as well as retain Pendergraph and Cunningham for next season.
he’s one of the pieces going to Philly for Iggy right?
hahaha

where exactly has it been rumored that that is kp's big trade?
other than it making a lot of sense, is it just generally bedge speculation?
by Peteyhasnohead on Jun 18, 2010 9:37 PM PDT up reply actions
i’d say it’s slightly higher than bedge speculation. it’s a brp rumor. i don’t doubt brp anymore.

eh….that was just a crazy coincidence. i don’t think he actually said, “MJ is gonna die today”. he just said that MJ would die before some other person. i think that’s how it went anyway. it was still eerie though.

yes. this is what makes me not doubt him anymore. i thought there was no way he’d be right about that.

I'd feel extremely bad for Doug Collins if Ed Stefanski stuck him with a four-guard rotation of ...
Rudy Fernandez, Louis Williams, Jerryd Bayless, and Jrue Holiday. At least Collins would have a point forward in Evan Turner — and perhaps he could use Fernandez like he did Allan Houston in Detroit and Richard Hamilton in Washington — but having both Bayless and Williams on the same team would wear down anyone.
my uncle has this van, but in blue and without the graffiti
whenever I see him I walked up to his window and say ‘hi mister! do you have any candy?’
"Bof teemz play hahd"
tell him he needs to paint the van black and put a big red stripe on it that leads up to a red spoiler.

my cousin, this uncle, and I are going to drive that van to Reno
it will be fun to stop in little places with our creepy van, especially cause my uncle is 70 with wispy white hair and only one tooth…

there was a guy here last year that lived right next to me
here at OSU on sorority row and everyone knew the guy as creepy van guy and he had some weird stuff in the back of his van and had the swat called out on him and they had a long standoff, it was very crazy

why do people spend money on social media gaming? who the hell cares about how big your farm is.

maybe they are getting promotional stuff out of it; like gambling a bunch and getting comps.?
do this and that and get an ipod, and the farm is just that, if they get a bigassfarm they can win a from i phone or something maybe?
how will you celebrate…..
that’s really funny. but probably only if a person has read The Fountainhead.

if you guys had to trade either Roy or Oden plus draft rights plus throw in like three other players and money to get back Lebron, would you do it?
And if so, which would you rather trade given the resulting lineup?
I'm a Greg Oden honk, yeah.
Even when I was still a Sonic fan, I liked Oden more than Kevin Durant.
by AK1984 on Jun 12, 2010 12:20 AM PDT
I would not trade Roy
I’m not as big of a LeBron fan boy as many others. I’m a major Roy fanboy, on the other hand. Maybe I’d give up Oden and three guys and draft picks, but I still think G.O. is going to be one of the top centers in the league when he is healthy. So I guess I really don’t know.

it's like asking if the Pistons would have traded Isaiah and Dumars to get Jordan.
I’m sure Atlanta would trade Joe Johnson and Josh Smith for Lebron, and our two might not be any better than them.
