Junk, Pure Junk, and Nothing But Junk -- JUNE 17
Well kids, it looks like an end of an era. I'll likely be moving back to NYC in a few months. The lady's got a new job there again and off we go, likely in September.
The bummer thing is, I'm supposed to attend two weddings in Sellwood in early August and can't afford the airfare. If the official move was a month earlier it would be grand on the old wallet, but as it is, I'll have to decline seeing two, three or four really, of my best friends get wed. a bummer.
This is Junk. I'm allowed to talk about personal crud 'n zach.
I looked into airfare and it will be a minimum of US$1870ish from HKG to PDX.Also, I'll have to cancell teh concert I was planning on playing at The Woods in Sellwood. AH!
The move brings up another very important question: Has anyone ever taken a pet on a trans-pacific flight? The airlines make it sound like it's no big deal, but the plane will be in the air for a minimum of 16 hours, and it goes over the arctic circle at amazing hight. Gonna be cold and low on oxygen down in the cargo hold for my little shnowzer.
Any advice?
I've done some research online, but nothing is really convincing.
See you soon!

I’ve had free tickets on Lufthansa and Cathay in business class, an I’ll say, it is awesome. totally pampered.
The Blazers have their own jet, I presume. What does it look like?
Just any other?

cathay is like a hotel
but when I left HK it was Bangladesh Air, to London via Bangkok, Dacca, Dubai, Instanbul, Paris. 3 days. For $141, though, if you want to save some money

no no - off plane layovers all along the way
including 9 hours in Dacca and 7 in Dubai. enough to whip into both cities for a minute. The oddest thing was no utensils for the in-flight meals. Everyone ate with their hands

eeesh, eating with hands on a flight?
I do everything I can not to catch a cold on a plane. Eating with my hands would be near the bottom of my list.

this was a long time ago (though prices were about the same)
it catered to the budget Bangladeshi traveler. You had the local naan-ish bread to scoop the food. Tasty, really. And we weren’t eating family style

This is a comment by the Spanish National Coach about Fernando San Emeterio, who made a 2+1 in the last minute of the last ACB Finals game, giving the Championship to his team.
“The fact that the last basket was made by a player who in the middle of last summer was practically out of the team and invited to seek a new team, is a great message to all players, some of which sometimes exaggerate about having confidence depending on outside trust”.
“Fernando understood that confidence had to be found in himself. He interpreted the decision taken against him as a challenge, and responded on the court like a great player and a great professional should. Week after week, training after training. And it was nice that, still probably in the worst game he played in the playoffs, he got the prize of making the last free throw to make his team the champion of the ACB”.

Silver linings. Silver linings. Silver linings.
Ben is apoplectic, most of BE is pissed, some still think (hope) KP will keep his job, and a few wouldn’t mind him being replaced.
I don’t think KP should be fired, but if we get a solid replacement, life will go on. I don’t really trust the Blazers brass to make the right choice on his replacement, though, and I’m not a fan of the Bickerstaffs as assistant coaches.
I still believe that the worst-case scenario is Bernie Bickerstaff being hired in a dual ...
GM/assistant coach role — which’d mean that Nate McMillan will thereby receive more input in player personnel decisions — however, I think that’s rather unlikely at tihs point.
Oh, and much to the chagrin of some folks, I’d contend that Mark Warkentien is probably the best-case scenario, although in my dream world Dennis Lindsey is GM and Jeff Van Gundy is head coach.
Yeah, Ben is taking this as well as a 10-year-old kid whose parents are planning to divorce.

I've lately been checking out trade rumors from here, there, and everywhere, with the following being an ...
intriguing proposal: Minnesota trades Kevin Love to New Jersey for the 3rd pick (e.g., Derrick Favors) and salary filler (e.g., Keyon Dooling). How do y’all feel that’d stack up for either team? Frankly, I’m not quite sure myself. If nothing else, it’d be fun to see a frontline duo of Brook Lopez and Love together. The T’wolves, moreover, would likely need to include either one or both of its later first-round draft picks — which are located at 16 and 23 — so as to balance out the trade in light of Favors’ alleged upside.
No, I think that it has a lot more to do with the Minnesota T'wolves desperately wanting to trade up ...
for either Derrick Favors or Evan Turner — although acquiring Turner would likely mean swapping out Al Jefferson for Elton Brand’s burdensome contract — as well as the tension between Kevin Love and Kurt Rambis last season.
Then again, my bet would be that the New Jersey Nets stand pat and go with Derrick Favors. Admittedly, though, I wonder if Favoris is less Amar’e Stoudemire and more Stromile Swift, which is a valid concern.
Yeah, it'd be a cool tandem.
Oh, and on second thought, I doubt that Keyon Dooling would be included as salary filler in such a trade, since the New Jersey Nets would most likely rather hang onto his contract and keep the valuable savings from waiving him. Rather than include Dooling, Kris Humphries — who’d have to exercise his player option for next season, although he might do it for a chance to return home to Minnesota — would be the salary filler.

People are talking about the USA-Slovenia match as a must win, which is strange because if the US ties Slovenia and beats Algeria, they advance as long as the Slovenia-England game doesn’t end in a draw (and even if SLV-ENG is a draw and England beats Algeria, that scenario still gives a 3 way tie on 5 points and the USA could advance on goal diff— and WOULD if they beat Algeria by 2).
Since topping the group is desirable and to have an easier path to advance, the SLV game is a “would very much like to win” game but a tie isn’t a disaster. Only a loss would be that.
Those zazaviooozooas

This reminded me of something I forgot!
The last game 7 in the finals. I had just left Boston and a couple week course at MIT. Watched games 4, 5, and 6 in Cambridge. But I flew home and went right to Hornings Hideout for the String Cheese Fest that I was working at. I think it was a Thursday night also. I was security and information at the evening front door post that particular event. I looked everywhere for someone who knew about the game. Asked EVERY car that came in about it. Asked EVERY person I talked to if they knew about someone playing it or showing a recording of it. Finally someone drove down and told me that the Spurs were up. I watched some of the game later on a NBAtv replay. It wasn’t nearly as exciting as the interest I had in it at the time or of the games leading up to it.
heehee
I used to be a food vendor at the Rose Festival. Which means I listened to the playoffs on the radio for ten straight years. At least every half hour a customer would wanna sneak back and listen in with me.
yeah
as a HS/College kid it was fun. Especially with something nice in the cooler. It ended up being 14 days of 14 hours or more per day. So, it was decent pay. It inevitably rained for half of it, but outside of that it was a lot of fun.
Great people watching.
the most memorable
was probably this gigantic leather covered goth looking dude leading two equally goth, gigantic and leather covered ladies around by studded dog leashes and collars.
And ever year without fail there was a guy that would order a tray of sauteed onions. That is it, just a big tray of sauteed onions. He was always very excited to see us. I think we were the symbol of summer for him.
Early on my managers were pretty crazy. They used to hold up a sign that basically offered a free strawberry shortcake for any lady willing to flash.

After watching his new import drink enough liquor to knock out a horse, Manotoc followed Bates into the street and saw the American pick up the back end of a car by its bumper and do a set of curls with it. Derrick Favors isn't a center, though, and he's got Stromile Swift level bust potential.
Quite frankly, the Philadelphia 76ers should think long and hard about DeMarcus Cousins.
well
they compare favors often with his size to Dwight Howard. I know thats not accurate but thats what they do.

Hey, wanna take on our junk for your junk?
Though I like Dalembert much better than Hawes. Classy guy and not a bad center though he is indeed a bit overpaid on this contract.
That's a sweet deal
Dalembert ain’t great but he ain’t bad and he’s better than Hawes… and Nocioni is the biggest waste of life this side of Gordon Lameward.

drink a lot of water. then excuse yourself to go to the bathroom a lot and go to the tv! OR pretend you aren’t feeling well (stomach problems) try to fart if possible. look uncomfortable. then get up and quickly walk to the “bathroom”. the stomach thing is better cause you can stay away for a long time cause staying in the bathroom for an extended period of time is acceptable when a person has stomach issues.

To the JD topic: I really like Emirates (very good service, lounges with free food even for economy class in Dubai, etc) and Cathay
But there are other good ones with modern fleets like Thai Airways, Virgin America, … I often fly Star Alliance for business reasons (Lufthansa, Air Canada, …) which is also good but not extraordinary. Next one on Saturday.
BA has decent service but they once really screwed me with a rebooking and their counter personnel is often bad. Air France/KLM is good, but Charles De Gaulle isn’t a great airport for transfer: You all get squeezed through one tiny security check gate which takes ages. Sometimes easier to leave the airport, drive around and check back in depending on where you need to go. Amsterdam is pretty good but also huge distances.
I try to avoid flights via NY (and Philly, which has some of the worst security procedures ever).
JAL is nice
For flights and Narita is a great transit airport.
DeGualle is crap, that’s for sure though.

Eric Lindell • Big Sam’s Funky Nation • James Intveld
Igor Prado from Brazil with Lynwood Slim • 2,000 LBS of Blues
Bharath and his Rhythm Four (with Jr. Watson, Richard Innes & Fred Kaplan) – Lisa Haley and the Zydekats • Flat Top Tom and his Jump Cats • Tom Harkenrider (Breakfast Set)

A lot of players and goalies are complaining about it. Apparently Adidas designed a dud this time.
It really seems to gain speed quickly, making it hard to play tempo soccer with passes routinely getting to long – and it quickly gains height on long shots making a lot of them go far far over the goal. Though the teams with technically really well-trained players (Brazil, Germany, Argentina, etc.) seem to be able to handle it.
Nothing
Adidas designs a new ball especially for the world cup every time.

oh wow, I look forward to seeing this replay… oh, he’s offsides. barely, though. Even a loss here doesn’t eliminate France, but it would make things awfully tough. Mexico must hold this lead.
This is why you can't run the offside trap that close to your goal

It was also along the sideline that Bullard met his wife, Paula. While in the huddle during the second quarter of a January 1993 game, he locked eyes with an attractive blonde behind the bench. A smile led to a wave, then to sign language. “She flashed me her number with her hands,” recalls Bullard. “But right when she finished, Rudy put me in, so the whole quarter I was repeating the number over and over in my head. When the half ended, I sprinted into the locker room to write it down.” His memory didn’t fail him. Matt and Paula have two children, Sara, 4, and A.J., 2.
hahaha
that’s cool. i wonder what his stats were like that quarter.

"Bof teemz play hahd"
They were, but that was a very dubious penalty called on Onyewu that effectively ended things for the US.
True
USA didn’t look very good in 2006 though. Not like they do this year, at least.
"Bof teemz play hahd"
The US sucked against the Czechs but wasn’t terrible in its other two matches. BTW, this could be England’s year because in 2006, the champs tied the US 1-1 in group play with the US goal coming on a blunder.
yep, 2 on the US (Mastroeni and I think Pope, one of which was a highly questionable straight red). The one on Italy was a no brainer— an elbow that bloodied Brian McBride.

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
hahha
just like we should have gotten out of the first round because 83% of teams that win game 1 on the road advance? ;-)
"Bof teemz play hahd"
83% might be if the home team wins game 1— it was a much lower number (around 55% I think) when the lower seed wins game 1.
Ah, okay.
I might have gotten the percentages mixed up. Not that it’s really important, as those stats don’t mean much other than a bit of fun.
"Bof teemz play hahd"
the A1 spot is an excellent one. You’d have to give them a shot to go to the semis if they can top the group. Won’t be easy to beat an Uru squad that will likely play for the draw.

"Bof teemz play hahd"

I wonder how much Maradonna will rest some of his stars
He should of course.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
the fun part is that they are still not mathematically assured of advancing, let alone topping the group. of course, they’d have to lose by 3 to Greece to finish behind them, so not likely.
I don't think Greece could score 3 goals if they wanted to
They had no real threat to score before the red today.

In middle school, I lost a soccer match to a team from Woodburn 10-0. The one white kid was their worst player by far.
I had a similar experience in a Boys and Girls Club Rec hoops game in HS, but the score was 112-39 and all but one kid was black. The one white guy was again the worst player by far though.
I have a friend who was a youth soccer ref
He has some interesting stories of reffing matches in Hispanic neighborhoods. They always shouted abuse at him in Spanish. He loved shouting back at them in Spanish (he’s fluent and white) and seeing their reaction.

I love that people thing the team must be doing nothing...
After all, they have only invested millions of dollars in Oden.
I have no doubt they are looking at EVERYTHING to see if there is a common denominator, or if any treatment will address the various ailments he’s had. And it would be a violation of federal law to discuss his treatment in any way that goes beyond generalities.

Parking already horrible near Staples apparently with E3 and the Lakers tonight
This is why you need to have good public transit. Stupid LA.

I’m also laughing at them.
But I hate the whole “Its all about how you look” vibe that LA has.

Btw got $275k to spare?
That’s the new going rate for center court courtside tonight.

LA and Long Beach were actually 8-9 in Walkscore’s rankings (PDX is 10). Obviously that’s not everything, but I think they get an unfairly bad rap esp. from folks in the Bay Area and Northwest.
That's true.
It’s the same everywhere. People from down there (and everywhere) like to overemphasis how much rain we get. And I always play it up. Don’t want more of them up here.
E3 has been pretty exciting.
and I wonder if Staples Center will even sell out tonight…
"Bof teemz play hahd"
it has made me glad i've got all three systems
and I think i’ll finally update my DS lite to a 3DS. DSi wasn’t worth it, but 3DS is supposedly just as strong as the wii. I also kind of want one of the slim 360s…
"Bof teemz play hahd"
it does looks pretty funny
but it’s supposed to perform a lot better, and use less energy. With how often I have my 360 on, between netflix, streaming video and gaming, i’d love to use less energy…

Watching a great documentary about the current state of various countries and people in Africa
They just showed a local party member in Angola who was rewarded by the corrupt government with an LG plasma TV to watch soccer and educational television. Problem: There is no electricity in the village.
The capital of Angola is more expensive than Paris, Tokyo or NY to live in – if you want any kind of western comforts at least. A bottle of good cognac can cost $3000.
SoccerbyIves thinks the US will make just one change to the lineup from the England game, playing Jose Torres in midfield instead of Ricardo Clark. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Edson Buddle start in place of Findley. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Bob Bradley go with the same lineup as the last match.
Buddle probably should start
Like Findley but he’s less experienced.
Give Findley the start vs. Algeria if you win tomorrow.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
yeah, some people think Buddle should start in place of Altidore with Findley still in the lineup— Buddle is more of a big target striker like Altidore and while nowhere near as talented (and playing against inferior competition), Buddle has been scoring a lot more goals this year.
I think Altidore and Findley both start again with Buddle and Herculez Gomez as likely subs if the US needs a 2nd half goal.
he prob should have scored on that header in the first half, but that run in the 2nd half where he hit the post is something only he is capable of on the roster, for sure.
Altidore is an x-factor
He can wow at times but he’s still too inexperienced to be consistent.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
he did lead the team in goals during qualifying so he has been productive for the national team in important matches at times.
Yeah that's what I mean
He has the potential to be an excellent striker for sure.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I remember his hat trick vs. T&T in the third round of qualifiers this year
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
but he’s a guy that defenses ultimately have to respect, which theoretically opens the field up for everyone else.
You have to play him
He can score at any time, period.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
or just looking at his goal against spain in the confed. cup last year. is there anybody else on the roster able to score that goal?
Dempsey might have the creativity to pull it off
But I doubt he has the power.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Nope
Donovan couldn’t do it. Davies probably couldn’t either (if healthy).
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
It hurts the US a fair bit
He and Alitdore were a very potent 1-2 punch, no disrespect to Buddle or Findley but neither of them can be that consistently good.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Davies scroed the opening goal against Mexico in Mexico City
Now obviously that game didn’t end well but it was impressive.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

Yeah, but with Rudy expressing doubts about his future in Portland, you don’t say no to that deal just because you have to give him up.
You even only start thinking about saying no as soon as they ask for someone out of Nic/Greg/LaMarcus. And even then it might be discussable. Iggy has failed as the #1 on his team to advance far in the playoffs, but as the #2? Heck yes! Try to decide who out of Roy and Iggy will kill you with drives.

I'd like to get rid of both Martell Webster and Rudy Fernandez.
Also, run-and-gun basketball is sloppy crap. However, Nate McMillan’s use of the high-low zone offense is also simplistic junk.
If the Portland Trail Blazers do get Iguodala, the Trail Blazers need a pro-style pick-and-roll coach like Jeff Van Gundy — whose arrival would most benefit Greg Oden — or someone who’ll run a power-oriented scheme like the Hawk offense such as Mike Fratello, as he’d effectively employ a slashing/cutting 3 in the mold of “Iggy.”
Again, though, up-tempo basketball is a recipe for perpetual loserdom.

I would love that. Iggy is definitely in my top 5 of non-Blazers I would like to be Blazers.
People will say “yeah but he can’t shoot”. Yet he is just what we need to shore up the inside scoring, and the perimeter defense. If we don’t give up Nico, that would be a huge win. Iggy and Nico as the perimeter defenders with Greg behind that = awesome.
…on the other hand, I can’t really believe they would give up Iggy without us either taking on Brand’s deal (the just acquired Nocioni isn’t really bad enough) and for just something like Martell and Rudy coming back.
Maybe Doug Collins is that stupid

In all reality, Nicolas Batum becomes a 24 m.p.g. role player if Andre Iguodala is in the fold.
I know that some people don’t want to hear it, but Batum is Tayshaun Prince and not Scottie Pippen.
where’s Timmay?
I came to Pigeon Hole the Skeptics
by The Arkitect on Jun 17, 2010 5:09 PM PDT up reply actions
Nic's statistics are quite a bit better than Prince's, especially looking at similar ages.
His PER last season was greater than any PER Prince has had.
True, Nicolas Batum is a souped-up version of Tayshaun Prince.
Batum is no Scottie Pippen, though, which is my main point of contention.
If I recall correctly, Scottie Pippen was no Scottie Pippen at 21 years of age...
"Bof teemz play hahd"
the Scottie career path is very rare and unlikely to be matched just because you have a promising youngster with some stylistic similarities who is as good as the 21 year old Pip was.
I know, I'm not saying Batum is going to be the next Scottie Pippen
but I think the comparisons are somewhat valid. Pippen’s early career was too long ago for me to really know though. I mean, I was a year old when he joined the league…
"Bof teemz play hahd"
I just think it does a disservice to both to make that comparison. Nic doesn’t have anywhere near the point forward playmaking abilities Pip did. Not even in the same ballpark.
Yeah, I think a lot of the comparison comes from their defensive style
but I agree, few, if any, players can compare to Pippen’s point forward skillset.
"Bof teemz play hahd"
First off, I don't disagree with you.
But second, I think it’s too soon to say what Batum will be like at, say, 33. Pippen’s court knowledge continued to develop over many years.
of course.
However, we can say that the chances of Batum becoming the type of ball handler and passer Pip was are not good.
They're certainly far below 50% (I don't see a need to argue percentages beyond that)
But after Scottie’s soph season, he’d likely be ranked similar. If Batum turns out as good as Pippen, it’ll be a ton of hard work, and more than a bit of good luck. And it wouldn’t prove anyone right of course, since everyone is just guessing now.
True yet it's completely useless.
To use an average player arc for a young player who is used to less than their full potential.
Pip’s career path is an outlier, like AK says. There will probably be dozens more “next Pip”s before anyone gets close to the real thing.
I don't think it's any more logical.
To assume Nic has a normal player development as it would be to assume Pip is out of reach. That being said, I don’t think Nic will be the next Pip. But I just don’t see any evidence that makes it less likely than more from Nic. Comparing him to everyone who was not Pip doesn’t fit.
It'd be like comparing Kevin Durant to John Drew after his age ...
20 season. Even though I still wanted to hate on Durant after his first season with the Oklahoma City Thunder — in which he posted a 20.8 PER — it’d’ve been wrong to Durant to compare him to Drew.
Now, I still truly think Durant is the scond-coming of Geroge Gervin — epseiclly with regards to their similar inability to facilitate for teammates on offense — thus, I’ll strongly hold my stance that he’s not a high-scoring superstar rather than a championship caliber franchise cornerstone.
Ugh, that last sentence should instead read like this.

Ah. Makes more sense after the fix
I just don’t think we’ve begun to see Batum enough to know his career arc. Even remotely. I don’t think it’ll be Pippen or Prince, personally. I just think you (and jk) are as wrong for figuring he won’t be as those he figure he will be. You lack evidence for the inference you are making. And the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence.
I just don’t think we’ve begun to see Batum enough to know his career arc.
It’s funny. You could replace “Batum” with “Rudy”, and the sentence is still valid. But many people seem to want to dump him for a stick of gum.
It seems that expectations are always either through the roof, or in the toilet, and not in between.
I think the two clear differences there
are the ability to recognize weaknesses and improve upon them and age. Nic gets what he’s not good at, admits it, and works on it. Rudy’s ballhandling is still as bad as it was when he played for Joventut. Also, he’s 25, so he’ll be looked at as closer to his ceiling, fair or not.
We definitely do get too extreme with projecting players. But the odds are a lot better for Nic improving, and he’s a better player as of now.
Still applies to Rudy. We'll have a much better picture next season if he's healthy
He could light it up for Philly and show improvement for all we know.
Yeah, I haven't given up on Rudy either.
But like Cab says. It’s easier to believe Nic could look like a different player by the end of his career than Rudy. But I completely agree.
Yep, he could've been struggling with injury.
And I fully admit he may improve upon his poor season last year; but, if I’m laying odds, I say it’s more likely that the 21-year-old with a track record of development and hard work is the one to make a leap.
Well, I'm not really talking about Rudy making The Leap
I mean more of him getting back to, and possibly improving upon, his rookie season. But instead, the prevailing opinion seems to be “he sucks! Dump him for a second rounder!”.
In reality, it’s likely that Rudy will be better than people than people currently expect, and that Batum won’t be as good as people expect/hope.
This is more of a general Blazer fan thing of course. Not aimed at you, etc.
Nic won't be Pippen
but expecting a 18-19 PER player with good defense is reasonable.
It’s silly to say Rudy’s not an NBA player. He clearly was his rookie year, and he’ll have a chance to prove he’s that guy again. Writing him off is quite reactionary.
There's a huge age difference with Nicolas Batum ...
and Rudy Fernandez, though. Plus, the Spaniard’s two biggest flaws — which are weak handles and scrawny physique — will always stick with him.
Covered above in the response. I don't really disagree
But I’m not yet convinced he won’t bulk up by the time he’s 28 or 29 if he decides to dedicate himself to NBA success (less likely if he goes back overseas).
Well, “bulk up” is a relative term for a Euro, but you get what I mean.
in fact
the whole idea of a point-forward puts a huge burden on everybody it’s imposed on, because there are so few who can succeed in that role. Pippen did it. LeBron does it, but he might be the most talented basketball player ever. Grant Hill was pretty good at it for a while.
Besides that, the guys who get called “point forwards” usually end up more like Lamar Odom than Scottie Pippen.
Grant Hill is also a rare, unique player, but I think it's more intellectually ...
honest to compare Evan Turner to him than Nicolas Batum to Scottie Pippen.
Also, I agree with jksanke that it’s an insult to Pippen for him to be compared with a clearly inferior player in Batum. It’s a disservice to Batum, too, because it places unfair expectations on him, especially since he’s already on pace to be a better version of a top-notch role player like Tayshaun Prince.
It's probably too far to say it's an insult
I presume Pippen is probably proud that every young promising small forward gets compared to him. At one time, he was a semi-promising SF himself.

here are the rankings in defensive efficency:
06/07- 3rd
05/06-6th
04/05-4th
03/04-5th
Jeff Van Gundy's defense relies on his players playing very staunch ...
man-to-man defense, with periemter players fighting through picks like real men — which’d be the death knell for a wuss like Jerryd Bayless — and post players staying at home down low, so as to anchor the paint. Greg Oden would benefit from that, too, for it’d cut down on his high foul rate.
I think there is a better chance he would than Nate
And I’m not really all that down on Nate. JVG has two advantages – he can actually coach D and pick and roll bball.

Right now we have a deficiency in upper-echelon talent.
Get more talent if there’s a steal on the table.
Three wing rotation with Roy/Iggy/Nic.
Batum is awesome
But we all know Iggy is awesomer. Not getting him because of Batum would be silly.
And I LOVE Batum, but Iggy is a scoring playmaker slasher who plays incredible defense. And is young. If it’s because his quite-expensive contract is too much for Philly now and they know he’s not a #1 guy, that’s fine with me. He’s perfect PERFECT perfect as a co-star.
He is so much closer to Pippen than Batum is, though neither are really that close obviously… Iggy is a worse shooting, much better defending, less star-like version of Roy.
#52
Exactly, those of whom who only follow the Portland Trail Blazers need to both temper their ...
expectations regarding Nicolas Batum — who’s very, very good, but not great — and realize that the closest thing to a modern-day, poor man’s Scottie Pippen is unquestionably Andre Igudala.
I would be very happy with Iggy in a Blazers uniform
it’ll be sad to see some of our boys leave, but that’s the NBA.
"Bof teemz play hahd"
The only question is
would Iggy settle for being a second banana? Some have raised that issue, although I guess I’d say if we trade for him, he’ll play for us because we write the checks.
I'd hope so
I haven’t heard anything from him, like we hear with Bosh, that not being the #1 option will be a problem.
Even as the #1 option, he has #2 option type numbers. I’d hope he will accept being a very important key player who doesn’t have to have the burden of the entire offense on him like last year in Philly.
#52
Yes, Andre Iguodala should surely mesh well with Greg Oden and, of course, Andre Miller.
If anything, Brandon Roy — and, to a lesser extent, LaMarcus Aldridge — will need to adjust a bit.
Yet, I’m afraid Nate McMillan lacks the ingenuity to fully utilize a player of Iguodala’s caliber at the 3. It’s unfortunate that McMillan isn’t on the chopping block, because Mike Fratello — who coached Dominique Wilkins in the ’80s —would know how to use Iguodala to his fullest.
Any body know what the insurance deal is with Joel's contract?
by southern oregon on Jun 17, 2010 3:40 PM PDT reply actions
Nobody knows exactly, since as Storyteller has pointed out a few times the insurance company might have put Joel on the "to be excluded" list of 14 players each year
If he’s not on it, the insurance pays 80% of his salary if he is likely to miss a whole season
Here is what the Salary Cap FAQ says about insurance
60. Are player contracts insured?
There is a league-wide policy that insures the contracts of around 150 players each season. The five most expensive contracts for each team are included, and teams have the option of submitting additional names for coverage. The carrier has the right to exclude 14 contracts per season, such as when they consider a player with a very large remaining contract to be a medical risk. For example they excluded Luol Deng in 2008-09 because he had $71 million remaining and a history of back injuries. The list of excluded players changes each year, so a player who is not covered one season might be covered the following season.
If an insured player is disabled, then there is a 41 game waiting period, after which the insurance company will pay 80% of the guaranteed portion of the player’s base salary. Once a player is covered, the carrier can’t exclude the player for the remainder of his current contract.
If the player is traded, his new team receives the beneft — for example, even though Cuttino Mobley’s heart condition was discovered prior to his trade to the Knicks, the Knicks received the insurance payout.
Based on this, it seems that unless Joel was previously excluded (seems unlikely) then he is covered by insurance
Nobody knows for sure. We know Deng is on there because that came out when he wanted to play for England and the insurance provider said “then you have to fully insure him” to his national team. I would bet Yao is on it. In the future, maybe Greg and Bynum could be on it once they both have a big deal.
Joel could be on it with his injury problems despite his smallish contract, but yeah most likely the insurance first looks at who has the biggest deals and then goes down that list by looking at injury history.
are there 14 other guys around the league
who have larger contracts are injured? i doubt it.
OJ Mayo is the Blazers' PG of the Future
by GreatOden'sRaven on Jun 17, 2010 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions
based on the CBA FAQ it says that the insurance carrier can't just remove the insurance during the duration of the contract
when a player gets injured. The insurance carrier declined to cover Deng’s contract when his extension kicked in, not at some other point.
So unless the insurance decided not to cover his contract back in 2006-07 when it first started, he is covered. And judging by the amoung of press that his contract is insured, I think that it is pretty certain that it is covered.
ahh missed that part

players I think would be more likely to not be covered are
Bynum
Oden (on his next contract)
Gerald Wallace
Eddy Curry
If I recall correctly, according to Storyteller,
insurance kicks in after Joel misses 41 games. It covers 80% of his salary and doesn’t affect the cap numbers. Then there’s the scenario that Norsktroll mentions Storyteller had mentioned, that ‘excluded’ list.

I didn’t think Noah was worth a #1 pick in 2006 but he was always better than stupid Hawes.
#52
According to Tom Ziller, who confirmed that he had heard the story but never broke it before Sam Amick (I think) broke it today, the Bulls – and Kings – were worried about his character in his rookie season. He was not working hard, and got into shouting matches with coaches and teammates. Now of course they would do the deal. And since I never was a fan of Hawes and his knees, I would have done that deal also back then.
As a Washington Huskies fan, it was clear to even when Spencer Hawes was in college ...
that his upside was a soft, unathletic high-post center in the mold of Brad Miller. Even then, that was it. Also, a lot of Husky fans were pissed off when he left school after only one season.
Bad and soft rebounder in college = much worse in the NBA
He’s too frail and non-physical, body wise. Not that he’s always hurt, but he doesn’t have a body that can get strong enough to handle real men centers.
#52
If you recall, Andrea Bargnani went #1 in the 2006 NBA Draft.
Also, I recall Joakim Noah being #1 2006 mock drafts at points during his first NCAA Championship run.
people started to see more of the things that he wasn't good at
and more of the things that Al Horford was good at
His lack of offensive development, I remember
Seemed to hurt him.
Even if Noah shoulda’ gone higher than he did, Horford is still the better player.
#52
Sure, Noah was the "no brainer" #1 pick after he led his team to the championship in college
I didn’t think he was good enough to be a #1 pick, but I also then felt when the Bulls got him the next season at what— #9? I forget— it was a steal of a deal.
Of course, now, Noah is likely better for a good team than LMA is and is obviously better than Bargs. Noah and Oden might not be a great combo though, and I much prefer Oden to Noah, but Noah is very very good and I always liked him more than dumb Hawes… but I never liked Hawes so it ain’t saying much.
I remember when Noah was sorta out of shape and arguing with coaches, so I get why they thought he may be an attitude problem, but it’s just another reminder of how quickly things can change with that sort of thing.

Chip Kelly's reponse to the lack of an annual LA trip in the new Pac-12
With the Pac-10 now up to 12 teams, there’s the expectation the conference will split into divisions, potentially costing Oregon and others the chance to play in Los Angeles every year, depending on how the divisions are formulated.
Chip Kelly, as he is wont to do, expressed nary a concern today about potentially losing out on an annual regular-season trip to the recruiting hotbed of Southern California.
In fact, he’s come up with a work-around.
"We’ll make things easy—we’ll go to the Rose Bowl every year," Kelly said. "It’s our job to win enough games every year to the go to the Rose Bowl."
There you go.

Keyon Dooling is a better option at backup point guard that Jerryd Bayless if the Blazers want to compete next year
Not a better player mind, but a better fit for the 12-15 minutes that role would allow for.

How many minutes y’all think Bynum can play in the second? His giganticness was an underapreciated factor in LA getting all those boards.
Me neither...
they’ve been saying it’s just his pain tolerance for a long time, and now it’s worse? Weird.
It must really be bad
IF they’re limiting him in game 7 of the finals.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
It's weird
because both with him and Roy the docs were very clear it was just a matter of discomfort, and they could nothing to make it worse.
Bynum's knees get hit a lot more I'm sure
Since he’s done in the post so much.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

just seems like the limitation is new, whichb is why it’s weird.

Here's the excerpt.
Just when this draft couldn’t get any crazier, my beloved Celtics just bought the 21st pick from Phoenix to take Rajon Rondo, the Kentucky guard who Chad Ford touted all summer because he mistakenly thought Rondo was foreign. Unfortunately, Rondo can’t shoot. This is an understatement. As Bilas says, “Teams in the SEC didn’t even guard him.” Put it this way: The list of NBA teams that won an NBA title with a point guard who couldn’t shoot looks like this:
1. (empty)
2. (empty)
3. (empty)
Let’s all now laugh at Bill Simmons.

Refereeing fail.
Partially on the Celtics, but the Lakers weren’t forced to make shots.
If I hear the “Kobe is great” narrative after this I am going to freak out. His rebounds in a game with a billion rebounds available is fine, but it doesn’t cover up how bad he was.
Let me just say how much I loathe and despise the Kobe/Gasol calls in the fourth where they drew the defense in and heaved. Garnett didn’t get the And-1 on that in the third. Three point swing.

Oh wait, how many free throws did LA have in the first nine minutes of the quarter?
LA has gotten the benefit of the doubt a few times, but Boston has done nothing to earn any sort of calls.
so overall, i agree.
"My love winks, she does not bother / She knows too much to argue or to judge"
by DrivetheLane on Jun 17, 2010 8:51 PM PDT up reply actions
I hate the "earn any sort of calls" style argument.
A foul is a foul is a foul. LA has gotten the benefit of the doubt this quarter. 20+ FTs in a game where they couldn’t make a shot is a big deal.
That didn't lead to free throws in the first three quarters.
37 FTs to 17. Some intentional, but I hate that a great game for three quarters turned into a foul shooting clinic.
you watch the NBA way more than me. you know as well as i do how the officiating works. so while i agree with you in principle, that “foul is a foul is a foul” reasoning is an ideal. and never a reality.

god watching this game makes me disheartened with the NBA. It seems like small market teams like Portland aren't meant or allowed to win a championship.
Yes, every once in a while a fluke happens, but the biggest cities ( LA, NY, Chicago, Boston ) just dominate the rings. After all this blazer drama a parade in Portland seems further away than ever. funny, just a year ago I was still thinking about multiple rings.

Marcus Jordan on Twitter:
NO ONE…And I mean NO ONE should EVER com par kobe Bryant to my dad an say that he is anywhere near close to my dad He’s jagging this game
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I'd say Kobe Bryant is on the same tier as Jerry West and Oscar Robertson at this point.
Also, I still strongly argue that Bill Russell is the most overrated basketball player in NBA history based on his average statistical output on offense and collection of first-rate teammates — who did help him win all of those rings — during his career.
Had a feeling Bill would come up.
Since I don’t feel I’m educated about the draft process and the ability to build teams in the era, I can’t really comment either way.
I was waiting for a Bill, a Wilt, or someone off the wall like a Magic or Bird.
Everyone concedes Russell wasn’t that great on offense. How can we know whether he was properly rated given that there is no objective measure of defense at all from his era?
It's a double standard on my part, yes.
I do prefer two-way players, though, such as Hakeem Olajuwon.
The good news about this
Boston is probably now done as NBA title contenders.

That guy who's about to be executed in Utah via firing squad -- by his choice no less -- has huge cojones.
i don't see how it's any worse than the 'lectric chair or leathal injection
i’m mostly against the death penalty except for proven killers, rapists, jaywalkers etc.
People who get banned from Bedge you know
But seriously I’m against the DP in all cases pretty much.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Specifically
the firing squad is probably the most humane way to execute someone if you are going to do it. Lethal injection likely causes very intense pain in the moments before death, and the electric chair is prone to all manner of malfunctions.
I thought that all Lethal injection recipients were rendered unconcious before the lethal chems were introduced to their bloodstream?
"Seek the wisdom of the ages, but look at the world through the eyes of a child."
-Ron Wild
That’s the idea, but it’s impossible to know if the anasthetic is sufficient, or if the induced paralysis is simply masking evidence of severe pain.
I would rather take the firing squad because then you know all your senses are obliterated before you can feel anything at all.
AK, are libertarians still split on the death penalty?
Now you are being deliberately obtuse
by Mortimer on May 3, 2010 4:39 PM PDT
I'm not sure, but I feel it's justified in some circumstances, Yet, that's only if it's 100% proven that ...
the person sentenced to be executed irrefutably murdered somebody in a premeditated, cold-blooded manner. Plus, it’s best to err on the side of caution.
I just don't see
How a life in a crappy jail isn’t a lot worse than instant death.
Life in jail with no chance of parole, to me, would be worse. No easy outs with a quick death.
Emotionally I think some people should likely die (pedophiles, for one) but putting them out of their misery with an easy death doesn’t seem like a severe enough punishment for truly evil people.
In my opinion. I bet the only thing we’d love more than a Lakers title, is a death penalty debate tonight.
#52
Ooph, I'm spent after what I wrote
From research I did for a paper in college (where I started out as thinking death penalty seemed like a good idea), it just doesn’t seem to make sense to me financially (it’s way expensive; more-so than the cost of keeping someone in jail for the rest of their life), kinda messed up morally for society to murder people (even if they are awful people), and if we just wanna punish them in the worst way possible, I think a living hell in jail is worse than an easy death.
Of course, most would likely say jail on death row ain’t that bad. I dunno. I ain’t an expert and it’s been years since I read stuff about it.
I want severe punishments for peoples like pedos… but not easy severe punishments like death.
#52

On another topic, world cup mini-preview for friday
Points in parentheses.
Group D:
Germany (3) vs. Serbia (0)-4:30 AM-Serbia desperately needs this game if they are to have any chance of making it to the second round. Fat chance the Germans, who spanked the Socceroos 4-0 in their opening match will let that happen. Germany probably rolls.
Group C:
Slovenia (3) vs. USA (1)-7 AM-Hey Sasha Vujacic, I hope you enjoyed hitting those 2 FTs because its the last thing that you’ll enjoy in the next 24 hours. But seriously, the US would nearly lock up a second round birth with a win here but would still retain control of their destiny with a draw. The US is in the rare position of being favored in the World Cup and don’t expect them to waste it. They should win this but Slovenia’s D may make it difficult.
England (1) vs. Algeria (0)-11:30 AM-England were left Green in their last match as Green let in one of the softest goals you’ll see at any level. To make the manic depressive British press forget about this, England must win this convincingly and they should. Algeria is clearly the worst team in the group and the sort of team that, if England can’t beat, they don’t deserve to move on.

has Shaq become weirdly underrated?
I mean everyone’s talking about Kobe as an all-time great, best ever, discussion with Michael etc. etc., yet Shaq was more productive overall and was better at his peak. Where does Shaq rank among the all time greats? Top 5-10?
Shaq was so much more dominant than Kobe
People have short memories. Old Shaq is nothing compared to in-prime Shaq.
