Blog Batum - "McMillan wants me to be the best outside defender in the league"
Translated from this post.
After the playoffs I mentioned in my previous post, I had exit meetings with Nate McMillan and Kevin Pritchard, where they told me I could go to the World Championship. They also told me that Webster was very pumped up about next year. Nate McMillan told me : "I just saw Martell, he wants to take back his spot next year, now it's up to you to keep it." He told me that anyways I had exceeded his expectations again this year. He was "each time you did more than I hoped, so next year it's up to you to do even better." So he sets the bar high but that's how you progress !
This summer he wants me to work on my shoot and my post-up game. Actually, the star guards like Nash and Paul often defended on me because in their opinion I was not supposed to be an offensive player, and he told me "next year, we won't let the occasion pass. Everytime there's one on you, we will post him up straight away." He wants to transform me more and more like Tayshaun Prince, little by little. Besides, if you count out Greg Oden who didn't play many games, I'm the 4th best scorer in the team this year. So next year he said he would have some systems for me and as soon as there's a small guy on me we'll play him in post-up, because I'm going to work it this summer. And on the shoot, I'll have to work on shooting off the dribble and off the screen.
At the exit meeting, he said he also wanted me to be in the best defensive team next year, in the top 5 in the NBA. He wants me to be the best outside defender in the league, while being a dangerous player on offense. He told me there were not many who could be dangerous on both ends of the court, but I had to be. He was "Every team that's NBA champion has one, so if you become this player, we're champion." :)
After the exit meetings, I went straight away to Los Angeles to see my surgeon. I went with Pritchard, we had a lot of tests and they were good. In fact, they told me "you're resting the entire month of May, you don't do anything. You don't touch a ball, you don't run."
I've only stayed there for a small week-end. I've been to Disneyland and it was crap compared to France : Marne-la-Vallée is greater than Los Angeles ! Actually, it's not modern, they're the same attractions since the 90s and you can see it. Then I came back to France, I saw the French cup. It was really good for Orleans, eventually ! It's a good thing they got a title : if there's a team that deserves one over the last three years, it's them.
Then I went on vacation to Phuket in Thailand, it was sick. I went to the beach, I visited the temples among other things. I also rode a canoe in high water. Well, don't worry for my shoulder it was a vacation so I didn't row ! I've been to the beach where they shot Koh Lanta 1 [French Survivor]. I wonder how they managed to survive all alone on that island, it's a great performance because there's really nothing at all...
Then on the trip back, since there was a stop-over in Dubai, I've stayed there for three days, so why not visit. Frankly, Dubai, it's fresh ! They are 15 years ahead of everyone. I have been to Atlantis, that's insane ! It's a hotel with a waterpark with a sick waterslide. It's so steep that when you're on top you can't see what's below. You're on a large rubber ring in a waterslide-tunnel that goes through a basin with sharks. Insane ! I also could swim with dolphins. It was American style.
But the thing that impressed me most was the Burj Al Arab, the 7 star hotel. I haven't slept there, let's be very clear, because at least 3000 euros a night ... 3000 euros to sleep in a bed, that's crazy... However, it truly is super nice inside. I've just had lunch there, because you can't get inside if you don't do anything.
In the evening I ate with Makan Dioumassi [former French player]. I had met him at the airport in Paris since the outward trip also had a stopover in Dubai. He has a business there, he settled there two years ago. So the last evening I ate with him, it was nice, we've mostly talked about the France team and post-basketball. It was interesting because Makan is successful in his conversion. I'm only 21 but I still think about it, so it was nice to talk with him. We also talked about the France team. He explained how it happened in the 2000 Olympics, he also told me about the failure of 2003, of his experience. He explained that basically if there are internal problems, it can screw a team up. But I assure you, I don't think there will be problems with the team we have here.
Then I went back to France. I rested mainly. I did some shows, I also recorded a video for the campaign Born HIV Free from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, of which Carla Bruni is the ambassador. When my agents asked me if I would do it I obviously did not hesitate. I did it with Jean-Michel Mipoka who just signed in Roanne, we had a text to read, to raise awareness about the fact that you can prevent transmission of HIV from mother to child and for this treatment to be available to every mother by 2015.
So I'm counting on you to go to the campaign website, on the tab "act" and sign the petition.
Anyways, I've also been to Roland Garros where I was able to see the semi-finals. For Nadal's semi, I was beside Grand Corps Malade [French slam-singer]. I didn't know him, he's really super nice, he's a big basketball fan. He's played in N2 and N3 before his accident [4th and 5th division]. So we talked a lot, basketball and music. He explained how was touring, etc. I was happy to see Nadal win. Last year, I was rooting for Federer but now, since he was out, I was for Nadal, because what he does is still impressing !
On the weekend I went to Treviso for the Adidas Eurocamp, which I will discuss next time.

It sure is nice to read
Batum and not get the feeling his ego is bigger than his IQ. It’s not very often anymore that you have such humility is a person that is so talented these days. Another reason to love the guy, he doesn’t let anything go to his head and he’s so hungry to do more than he already has done.
Batum should end up a lifer with the Blazers. 21 and already shows a lot of maturity. Every time I read him, I think about Jordan’s quote of Batum being the next Scottie.
Get busy livin', or get busy dyin'. -the shawshank redemption.
Let's envision this for next season:
Nic Batum with the ability to post up, shoot off the dribble, and defend even better than he does now. Goodbye “Big Three.” We’re talking about the Blazers’ big FOUR!
That is, if Frenchie will let that shoulder of his heal properly!
I was born in '52, and I believe in #52. Hang in there, GO.
You too, Przy: everyone knows you're the heart & soul of the Blazers.

It's good to hear that Nate is telling Nic to work on his post-up play
The sight of #88 backing smaller players down from the wing (like T. Prince does) will be most welcome

We put a lot of expectations on this kid
But he’s the first one since Brandon who I think really has a shot at being truly special. I hope he achieves all of the potential we think he has — it sure would go a long way towards making this team a true contender.
Oh my goodness seeing Batum talk about learning to post up little guys makes me SO FRIGGIN HAPPY.
In several ways:
McMillan is expanding Batum’s role in the offense, definitely beyond ‘the Portland’ aka standing in the corner
Batum is ready to get better and jeez he’s just fantastic
and also I had a thought similar to this in the playoffs. Perimeter players with post games bring so much more especially in terms of mismatches (like Andre).
Cannot WAIT to see him back in uniform.
You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.
I promise the first play I see run for Batum
I will get up and dance around while chanting “BA-TUM, BA-TUM” until my roommates are ready to unplug the TV.
watching the finals
I was thinking there are worse models for Nic’s offensive game than Ray Allen. If he keeps shooting from the outside at his current efficiency, teams will close him out hard. If he can learn a little bit of Ray’s ability to shoot gaps where guys play him close and score or make the right pass, he’d be a great weapon.
Ray also has the ability to be effective when his shot isn't falling
Last night was incredible. He knew his shot wasn’t falling, so he got out in transition and caught passes from Rondo. Nic is already a good cutter, and he’s super fast. Picking up that transition offense would be huge.

How is he going to improve and be the “ONE”?
First:
“as soon as there’s a small guy on me we’ll play him in post-up”….then by “shooting off the dribble and off the screen”.
Second:
Make the list for the “best defensive team next year, in the top 5 in the NBA”
And I think he could become the “ONE” next year.
No plays mentioned to run for him here but
Batum can immediately take advantage of any size mismatch. That’s a green light of sorts.
That will force the guard back on Roy and prevent Roy from being smothered by their long-armed SF.
I don’t expect Nate has it in him to actually run plays for the SF position.
Maybe Nate has to be brought alone in yearly increments and that’s why he seems to be limiting Batum.
I’m hoping that he becomes more creative and open to Batum’s shooting efficiency by playoff time.

he is a good player, but I don't think he is Neo.
What do you mean “the ONE”? Like Lebron or something?
Hint
read the article above which I quoted from.

the other team has to make a choice
If Roy and Miller are healthy, they can post up smaller guards
Even before the Phoenix series (Indy, Earl Watson) we saw opposing coaches switching their small guard onto Nic, who was standing in the corner as per usual
No play needs to be run for Batum, the offense just needs to swing the ball to him and clear a side. (Call it a post-up, ISO, whatever you want.) If Nic can score over the top of the little guy, the other coach will have to 1) send help 2) switch the little guy off of Batum, or 3) make a substitution and take the little guy out of the game.
This is how the Blazers can best counteract small/quick PGs. It could be devastating if Frenchy gets his back-to-the-basket moves down pat, and if he can whip a passes to open cutters when the opposing team tries to double him

It's a shame that Nate
waited until the end of the season to give Batum the “green light”
to go offensive against the smaller opponent.
You said, “No play needs to be run for Batum, the offense just needs to swing the ball to him and clear a side.”
Nate generally uses the SF solely as a safety-valve-shooter. Batum is out of the play flow.
A play has to be run/called that involves distributing the ball TO Batum before he can take it to the guard.
My hope is the Roy and Batum work something out that Batum signals him and Roy distributes.
In other words, Roy calls a play for Batum.

in the Blazer's offense, the 2-3 are basically interchangeable
it’s just that up until Batum’s emergence , Nate hasn’t had a SF who could really go get his own
(unless you count what Travis was doing, in 2007-2009)
So instead of Roy catching the ball and breaking (or backing) his man down, it could just as easily be Nic

Great to hear what transpired in the exit interview
Both on Batum’s end and in regards to Martell….
But what’s the deal with trashing on Disneyland?

We probably spent more time in that park than in Mouseland when we were down there the last time
Of course, my kids are grown and we had passes

When I was a kid (around 7 I think) and we were landing in LA to go to Disneyland I had one thought:
This must be what hell looks like!
Disneyland sucks too, by the way.
In Bayless I trust.

He means that Euro Disneyland (near Paris) > US Disneyland
And he’s probably right. It’s much more modern.
"if there are internal problems, it can screw a team up"
just sayin.
Travis Outlaw fan from the beginning.
Nic is hoping
that team Espana has internal problems, this time around

This is good news.
I’m so glad to hear that Nate sees the same potential in Batum that we do. I was afraid that he would keep Nic as a spot up 3-point shooter, and maybe just try to get him more open looks. Nic with a post up game makes me so excited for next season. Its gonna be awsome!!
Still dreaming of the RAMBO line-up for next year...
I hope everyone considered signing the petition for Born HIV Free
you can sign with any name, say Go Blazers! or 88 Maestro.

im concerned about how this development can potentially be hindered without monty.
i don’t trust nate in player development as much as i do monty.
now back in sunny portland, oregon
Batum develops his techniques mainly in France
during the summer. He said as much last year.
At the beginning of last season he had already morphed.
Nate has sent him off, as he did last year, with the next set of learning tasks.
Watch the first few games closely this season and you will see what I mean.
Monty added some polish but I think you’ll be happy with his level of development… early.

batum has the chance
to be on a level similar to pippen. the thing i realise is that he is still young, and pippen really didnt get going till he was probably about 25 since he went to college for all 4 years. batum is 21 right?
the kids got some swagger,
for a young European player…Not intimidated much with the “big show”.
I hope Nate does not “confine” his play too much. He has some good tools and we have only witnessed a small portion of them…This kid should not be yielding to anyone on this team. Time has run past Nate a long time ago.Roy is our star, but he will not be our salvation…
I hope Nate’s review with Roy might go along these lines; "Brandon, next year it will be less of you and more of us. We are going to have a more team oriented offense that will help conserve your energy so you are not too tired to hurt us on defense. And this is no demotion. It’s called movin on, with what we’ve learned, so far. Brandon, I’m taking some pressure off of you, so you can be more effective within a “team atmosphere” and you can be physically ready when it’s crunch time when we need your one on one skills. It will also contribute to keeping you healthy and fresh. So go out this summer, take a breath of fresh air and enjoy. Next season is going to be a lot more fun, so bring this attitude into camp."
Wow Nic, so awesome, I get to quote myself!
When Dave posted up his question last week as to whether the Blazers had a “Big Four” with Nic Batum, I made the following comment:
I have to admit I’m dancing around the issue of "Big Four" or not… part of that is that I don’t think that’s up to us. It’s actually not up to Nic either. It’s up to the coaches and how their offense is designed. As has been pointed out in the last season, nobody is drawing up plays for Nic.
I went on to say that there was no need for Nic to have plays drawn up for him in order to be an essential part of our team’s success. Nevertheless, it was super exciting for me to read:
So next year he said he would have some systems for me and as soon as there’s a small guy on me we’ll play him in post-up,
I’m going to have to constantly remind myself to not get overly excited about the next season. Maybe it’s time for a “stay humble” post-it note on my monitor?
Like the Whos down in Whoville they did it without boxes or ribbons or bows, they did without centers or posting down low. They won without All-Stars and Spaniards and Frenchmen. They won with old geezers and sub-par defense-men. They won playing rookies from deep off the benches. They won with their grit and their guts in the trenches. And some who observed them have been known to say that their hearts grew three sizes (at least!) on the way. One hopes with their poise and their passion now proven that once they are healthy their game will be groovin'.
if batum gained
about 10-15 pounds of muscle, got a running hook shot or up and under, to go with his excellent defense and improving jumper, skys the limit
Does anyone notice that he slams Oden in this entry for missing time due to his injury?
Blazers win!
No, he didn't
He said GO “didn’t play many games.” That’s a statement of fact.

Free Batum!
Batum needs to be free and confident. He can slice to the basket and sky. He just seems tentative and needs to be encouraged to fly. The Blazers should play ’70s and ’80s style basketball, or at least Drexler era basketball. Batum could be Dr. J and Oden could be Moses Malone and Roy could be Andrew Toney and Miller could be Mo Cheeks. LaMarcus could be LaMarcus.
