That's the speculation according to this blog. Didn't see anything else up here mentioning it, so I thought I'd toss it in.

not really speculation

the columnist thought the Heat should see what the asking price for Oden is. That’s a long way from being any kind of rumor speculation.

"I want to be traded to a contender" is almost always code-speak for "I'm a loser."

I say we trade him for Jermaine O'neal

So we can watch Oden blossom on another team.

just kidding of course.

I love irony,

but not as much as I’ll love watching GO get young.
It’s a curious case.

by damonrayhymer on Jun 1, 2010 9:11 AM PDT up reply actions

Jerm is an UFA

I was thinking he might be a good 4-5 to pursue this summer, until the Camby trade/extension

It will be interesting to see if he can get an offer for more than the MLE

this isn't even really news-worthy

just some blogger saying that they should see what it would take to get him…

Honestly the Heat don’t have anyone on their roster I would want other than DWade

by rip_city_swagger on Jun 1, 2010 9:16 AM PDT reply actions

what could the heat offer that would be worth our best chance ( getting slimmer by the year I realize ) of a championship?

kind of a ridiculous thing to suggest. Is this just his opinion? Or does he know something? I just don’t see any way the Heat could swing a deal for Greg. Beasley maybe? Would they give him up for Greg? I know he’s been underwhelming, but he’s been healthy.

if Oden was traded, then the universe will certainly be traded from team to team eventually ending in a series of DNP-CD’s….AFTER it gets a hole punched in it.

If that happened, then clearly there already IS a hole in the universe

plays the position at which we have the least need. There is no conceivable package they could put together for us that would work.

Wade would have to play PG

and share ball handling duties with Roy.

Hey, now that I think about it, Wade really would be the ideal PG for this team: great size for the position; ball handling and playmaking are unquestionable; excellent, maybe elite defense; 3pt shot is only ok, but is getting better, slowly…

I think it could work out and help keep the miles low on both guys.

Not going to happen. GO is basically un-tradeable; what the Blazers would want for him no team would give up for him.

it doesnt matter that they play the same position

if you could get Wade to pair with Roy, you’re gonna find a way 2 make it work. Not that it matters cuz Wade is a free agent and they obviously wouldnt offer him for Oden anyways

I liked Fat

I was in Denver when he played there, he and Alex English were fun, so was Moe’s motion offense.

by DucRider on Jun 1, 2010 8:24 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it was Steve Duin, the old Oregonian columnist

who wrote an article that explored “what if the Blazers had drafted Jordan and not made the Vandeweghe deal?” He speculated that Moe wouldn’t have lasted in Denver (the 5-for-1 trade led to a 52 win season and saved his job with the Nuggets) and that Jordan/Drexler would’ve eventually driven Ramsay crazy and Portland would’ve replaced Jack with Doug.

Bucky eventually built a pretty-decent roster in the late-80s, but it would’ve been interesting to see if Moe had been able to get further with that hypothetical running Portland team than he did up in Denver’s altitude. I don’t agree with Mychal Thompson that Portland would’ve had enough size in the frontcourt (with Wayne Cooper and #43 at center and Kenny Carr at the 4) to compete for a championship, they still would’ve had to acquire players like Buck and Duck to make it that far, even with MJ and the Glide to go along with Fat and Natt

by two4larue on Jun 1, 2010 9:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I still think we need to extend Oden's contract 4-5 years at as low a price as we can negotiate.

We’ve been through too much with him, and been patient. No team deserves to come in and take him after all that time. Even if he never pans out, his potential is better than any current center other than Dwight Howard.

by BRoyInThe4th on Jun 1, 2010 2:23 PM PDT reply actions

I agree

One of these days, he’ll be healthy for the playoffs. He’s worth keeping for that, as we have seen the difference he can make when he’s on the floor. Is it worth paying max or near max money for the prospect of a good playoff run? Probably not, which is why I agree with you that he should be resigned at a discount until he starts putting together some complete seasons.

by HailOden! on Jun 1, 2010 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions

we talked about this a few months back

with the looming CBA and work stoppage (not to mention Greg’s injury status) there doesn’t seem to be a clear advantage for either Oden’s camp or the Blazers to pursue an extension this offseason

If he has a big year in 2010-2011 the Blazers will have the opportunity to match any offer that he receives, next summer. Of course, that offer could be extremely “toxic”

All the more reason for PA to stay at or near the luxury tax threshold, this offseason?

by two4larue on Jun 1, 2010 3:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Given Oden's injury history I think there is a clear reason/advantage for him to extend this summer.

If he comes back and moves poorly (as he did for a year after his MF surgery) his value will drop greatly this year, plus there is a chance (is that kind enough?) he could be re-injured next year and never get the big 5 year deal.

I don’t see much reason for the Blazers to extend him this summer though, unless he is willing to sign for a bargain (say $9M-$10M a year and perhaps a team option rather than a player option). I suppose he could get upset with Blazer management or fan’s expectations and use the qualifying offer mechanism to get out of town early (after his 5th year). But that seems very, very unlikely. Few players have done it, and in his case it would be taking further injury risk.

So bottom line, I would expect he either signs a relatively cheap deal (for the Blazers) or nothing gets done this summer.

We fans can hope for that relatively cheap deal

but I expect his agent will advise him to roll the dice. Greg is still one of the most valuable commodities in the NBA, even though he hasn’t stayed healthy enough (yet) to prove it

The scenario that concerns me is that the new CBA will contain a proviso that somehow screws Portland out of #52. It would be par for the course for Blazer history, to lose their best chance at another title, just as he’s coming into his prime years

When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

by two4larue on Jun 1, 2010 9:43 PM PDT up reply actions

But with the new CBA

isn’t there just as much risk in waiting? I’m not saying that his agent won’t tell him to wait, but it seems that he might even have a better chance of getting a larger deal this summer than next summer. I do believe both parties will wait, but I wish they wouldn’t, and don’t really consider it wise.

by HailOden! on Jun 2, 2010 9:25 AM PDT up reply actions

yes, no, maybe so

nobody knows. Cost-certainty is always a good thing, but if both sides think they might get a better resolution if they wait, then they’ll wait. One side probably won’t be happy that they waited, at the end of the process

There's talk of a hard salary cap that in theory could make it impossible to re-sign your own players.

But I don’t see that happening. The fan reaction to teams not being able to re-sign their own players would be immensely negative. I can see the new CBA doing lots of things like shortening contract lengths, reducing veteran maximum salary limits and eliminating the MLE trade exception, but I can’t see a hard cap without an exception to retain your own players.

not sure i agree with your logic...

“with the looming CBA and work stoppage (not to mention Greg’s injury status) there doesn’t seem to be a clear advantage for either Oden’s camp or the Blazers to pursue an extension this offseason”

i agree that the blazers have little reason to negotiate an extension this off season. unless it’s incentive laden I can’t see why they’d do it. it’s not a stretch to wonder if greg oden will ever be able to play a full season of basketball and even when he’s healthy he’s hardly been fantastic. his per minute numbers look great provided you ignore his historically unparalleled foul rate. when you factor that in i don’t see why people consider 9 or 10 million a bargain.

however greg’s camp has plenty of incentive to sign a guaranteed extension of 4 years if they have the opportunity. greg can’t stay healthy and can’t stay on the floor. there’s plenty of reason to believe he’ll never make any impact in the league. if he has the option to sign a 3 or 4 year extension at the 10M a year, he’d be crazy not to consider that.

assuming the best and he becomes healthy and productive he can simply sign another deal in 3 or 4 years. he’d be entering his prime at 26 or 27 years old.

by colinmarsh on Jun 1, 2010 8:18 PM PDT reply actions

I doubt Greg’s camp is looking at his NBA future from this perspective

by two4larue on Jun 1, 2010 9:45 PM PDT up reply actions

It's a gamble for him either way.

He absolutely won’t sign for less than $9M-$10M, minimum 4 year deal, because he could hobble ineffectively through next year and get nearly as much in free agency next summer. But that might be enough if his camp fears another major injury (with more surgery) this year. However, if he makes a big comeback this year he could get a max deal next summer.

It’s really hard to assess Greg’s value at this very moment in time. If he were somehow magically available in the draft this year, but at his current salary, and he would be a restricted free agent a year from now (his most likely Blazer scenario), where would he go in this draft? (assume his current injury status — whatever/whoever you believe about that — and his current NBA injury/playing history) Would he go #1 again?

Probably 2, no lower than 3

Wall is a pretty special player, complete PGs are highly prized, even more so than wings like Turner (or Durant)

There are a lot of PFs in this draft, but there are no Odens. Say what you will about Greg and his injuries, I’m just glad Portland’s future doesn’t depend on a player like DeMarcus Cousins. There’s never been any doubt that #52 is going to work hard and share the basketball with his teammates, when his body allows him to

by two4larue on Jun 3, 2010 12:26 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I expect he would go #2.

Now if he were coming straight out of college again (with no NBA history) he would go #1 because expected once-in-a-decade dominant centers must always go #1 (that’s how he got here instead of Durant). So I guess that says how much we now have devalued him based on his injuries and demonstrated NBA level abilities (both the good and bad). We hope he will still be very good, and we’d bet a #2 pick on him because we think he will be, but we don’t have confidence that he will be that once-in-a-decade dominant center anymore.
