Cinco de Junko

Welcome to the Cinco de Mayo Junko.

I'm your host, Senor Muy Stupido (AKA Y5k)

Being as it's Mexico's independence day, I've decide to break my BEdgecation with a Junk Drawer dedicated to random zach you have collected on vacation that you never use/look at/glad you bought.

Star-divide

I have in my possession loads of books I meant to read while on vacation but never did, a smattering of bookmarks from foreign ports, ungodly amounts of paper products (stationary and such) that i thought was so one-of-a-kind that it couldn't be left behind. I also have a chest of stupid T-shirts. Now these treasures are where they'll get you. I'm not talking about the "I'm with stoopid" kind, but the "St. Barth's" shirt that really should say "St. Barth's, where the meal you eat will cost more than the car you drive at home."

I used to have loads and loads of stupid bracelets woven by hungry kids scrounging to feed their father's drug habit, but most of those met the rubbish bin years ago.

Hmmmm, oh, I'm a sucker for a bit of lame jewelry, provide it costs less than US$10. Odd thing is, i don't wear jewelry at all. Almost never. And when I do it's for like 15 minutes and then I'm like, this ring/necklace is stupid.

What junk you foreign got in your drawers? (That's not meant ot sound dirty, but take it how you like.)

I would, but most are way way too dirty.

the Caribbean ones would make Lenny Bruce blush.

to call some one stupid in mainland China, you say: Er bai wu
which translates to 250, which is half of 500, meaning you aren’t quite all there.

To call someone a B, that is to say a female dog, you say: San Ba
Which translates to 38. I have no idea why this means what it does.

I can’t think of a way to tell the King-daddy Caribbean curse word without having Dave come to my door and personally chicken chop me in the neck. I will say, however, it is widely used. I was on an open-air taxi once with two great-grandmotherly women who were complaining about a relative who borrowed money regularly and never returned it. I think they thought I was just a mainlander and did not understand their lingo, so they let a couple of these babies fly. Woa daddy.
I spun around in my seat and gave them a surprised and somewhat indignant look. They were super embarrassed. i love making elderly people feel like the naughty children they are. Ha!

OK: It is this guy’s last name with the first word being a mutilation of the word “mother” in possessive form and the last word being, well, that word you’re not likely to hear anyone but Joe Biden drop in public.

Chinese in Hong Kong call white Gwailo, which means “white ghost” or “ghost man” and has a devil connotation.

Most Eastern Caribbean people are vaguely xenophobic about Dominicans and call them “Santos.” But that’s not much of a curse word.

Ah ... Garrote

A garrote, in Caribbean slang, is someone who borrows money and does not return it, or makes a pledge and does not follow through. Moreover, it often also is used to describe a thief or person of low moral fiber.

Lao Wai

In China, they use the term “lao wai,” or “Old Foreigner”..technically isn’t an insult, but kinda sounds like one when they use it.

I'm wearing two accessories these days.

I’m wearing a choker with a piece of rice in the bead. It has my wife’s name written on it. She got it at a mall (maybe it was at Stratosphere) in Vegas. I’m also wearing one of those woven friendship bracelets she made years ago.

This is bugging me: If you are cheating on your spouse, please do not let me in on the secret. I do not want to know.

Especially if i know the spouse. It’s just disgusting and a bad position to put another person in.
One guy kept bugging me once asking me to give him a moral judgment on whether his infidelity was wrong. i said it was between him and his wife, not me.
Had a friend here in HK accidentally text his wife thinking it was his girlfriend. Wife freaked. Then just 15 minutes ago, a mutual buddy eyed up a girl sitting at a cafe and said something crude to me about her. I know his wife very well. normally i wouldn’t care, but that’s just awful timing after this other dude’s txt gaff.
Ugh.
I’m not normally squeamish, but I just find the whole thing repugnant. Keep it to yourself.

I still remember the day…..
Our instructor would play some good charts for us to listen to, and then we’d play them after we listened. One song had a solo trumpet where the guy started off by screaming out a high E for a couple bars. I was always trying to increase my range while at home but never really belted out while at school.
Well, he handed out the sheet music and when the time came I belted the first note of the solo and the whole band turned around. hehehe.
Soon afterwards we had a few Maynard charts we’d play. Fun times.

the mystery of BTTJ's changeup:
There’s a little bit more detail there. Lincecum was a fastball/curveball guy without the best command, so you can understand where Law was coming from.

Then something happened. I’ve whittled down exactly what that was into two possible scenarios:

Scenario A:
One morning, Tim Lincecum woke up. He had a glass of orange juice, a banana, and two eggs over easy. He stretched, yawned, and learned a changeup. Now Tim Lincecum was the best pitcher on the planet. He was also full of energy from his nutritious breakfast.

Scenario B:
The full moon was silver, shimmering, making the lake seem as if it was fire. Tim Lincecum lay under the banyan tree, weary from his day’s journey. He dropped his gourd and closed his eyes for what seemed like the first time in months.

In his dream, Hecate came to him in a youthful form. She gripped a baseball between her pointer and middle fingers, and the ball howled in pain. Even Hecate could not put the ball at ease. She said to Tim, “A gift. But be warned the baseball is tormented by this painful grip, which presses on its very soul. The ball will dart from your hands as soon as you release it, but it will slowly fade into nothingness as it approaches its destination, dying before it reaches home plate.”

When Tim Lincecum woke up, he struck Zeus out on three straight changeups, then turned into a swan and slept with Zeus’s wife just because he could. Also, Tim Lincecum was now the best pitcher on the planet.

Probably Scenario B, but I want to hedge my bets. Also, I saw Scenario B open for Raekwon a few years back. His flows were sick.

by appel82 on May 5, 2010 9:05 AM PDT reply actions

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for “fifth of May”) is a voluntarily observed holiday that commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.23 It is celebrated primarily in the state of Puebla and in the United States.4567 While Cinco de Mayo has limited significance nationwide in Mexico, the date is observed in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.8 Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day,9 the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.10

One thing to love about UK Politics

Some of the joke parties, such as the Official Monster Raving Loony Party, whose proposals this year include:

Prison Food
The problems of prison overcrowding and increased crime will be solved easily by issuing a compulsory contract on McDonalds to do all prison catering. Convervative estimates suggest a 50% reduction in crime rates within 2 years with 0% re-offender figures.

Needles
Due to the increasing number of children afraid of needles, I propose the destruction of the tedious, scary and often painful process of school vaccinations.
Instead, I propose that highly trained nurses should be given free reign on the playground with specially modified tranquillizer rifles which apply vaccinations as well as a tranquillizer. This would have two main benefits: It would be less scary for the children as they will not know what hit them, also it will be more fun for the nurses.

Good Morning
It should be illegal to wake up prior to 9.00 A.M. Offenders will made to work on a treadmill for 25 hours, and then woken up after 30 mins heavy sleep with a large alarm clock. Thrown at them.
The exception to this rule will be Doctors who, will have to work longer hours due to the extra number of reported head injuries

Apple fanboys and fangirls may take offense to being called “geeks,” but a new dating website is about to be launched that will help said “Apple geeks” find more than just one another. Perhaps they will also find love. Stupid? Yes. But “Cupidtino” is the buzz of the blogosophere today, despite sounding like the premise of a bad Saturday Night Live skit.

In a nutshell, Cupidtino is a social network for Apple fanboys and fangirls to find romance beneath the rubric of a shared interest – all things Apple. Hoping to make hearts glow like our beloved LED-illuminated screens, Cupidtino is certainly poised to become an innovative online community when it officially launches next month.

It’s their name, no one translates their name into the equivalent in another language.

What does “Blazers” translate to? I think I even went “why not Los Sols?”, but only because everyone knows what sun is in Spanish… it doesn’t really make sense to translate the official brand name of a team.

it is actually two words…this was made very clear by the founder of the team……Trail Blazers…so it would then require that each word be translated separately….. which comes out as Camino Chaqueta de Sport…..which translates back as Highway of the Sports Jacket….which I kinda like

I would venture to say they often don’t really know precisely what their products are supposed to offer as benefits since they have to fulfill so many different needs and have so many features, so they do more general brand campaigns. MS’s brand awareness is extremely high, satisfaction with individual products not so much. Though I like the current Windows 7 campaign much better than their last few, especially the Seinfeld and Gates campaign that was way too esoteric and didn’t even explicitly mention any products.

it’s this newer brand that is being sold cheap to start with (it’s like 16 or 18 bucks a bottle), and it’s really good. Hard to know, but given the interest level he’s receiving, it certainly seems as though he’d be worth at least interviewing if he is still without a head coaching job when the Blazers and/or Nate move on.

It would really stink if we let Nate go in midseason next year, and our coach in waiting is gone too

We may be left with “Interim coach Dean Demopoulos”.

Not that Nate is destined to be gone in midseason, nor that Monty can stay forever in wait as an assistant when he’s in demand… instead, it’s simply that I don’t like not having a backup plan.

Be Kind Rewind wasn't as good.

It’s still fun and has that magical realism that Gondry excels at, but overall, it’s a lesser film. I fell in love with Science of Sleep the first time I saw it, and the more I watched it, it slowly blossomed into being my favorite. Again, though, it’s my favorite largely because I connect to it so well, so it may not be for everyone. Definitely check it out though.

It's a funny thing.

Because when I grabbed that movie, the nurse looked at it and said “you know, this is a really really strange movie. maybe you should grab a backup movie in case it loses your interest. im pretty sure no one who picks that movie finishes it”. I grabbed it because it looked unique and it certainly was! It was really weird.. and at times I was worried it would be all bizarre and never make any sense or be worth it as a story. But it really is an adorable premise, and I really like the characters (esp. the two of them).

I was pretty sure that no one here in the JD would have said that they had even heard about it, let alone that it was there all-time favorite film.

If they absolutely must make a sequel, they need to have some fun with it

Have them claim they’ve learned how to build the alien spacecraft, then have them go on the offensive, chasing after the aliens and having huge space battles.

People always pay money to see huge space battles.

by Timmay! on May 5, 2010 3:24 PM PDT up reply actions

I think you have got it all wrong

As I said the last time we had a JD discussion about the sequels to Independence Day:

But why do the aliens need to use all of the resources of the planets?
Is it because they are foolish and attack inhabited worlds instead of unhabited ones? Or is it something more sinister. Perhaps they are enslaved to an even meaner and nastier race of aliens (kind of like the Silver Surfer and Galactus) who use their resources to enslave the galaxy. And now since their race of slaves has been destoryed, they are angry.

The climax will involve a race through some old warehouse as they look for an old Powerbook
that has Mac OS9 loaded unto it so that they can upload a virus into the alien’s computer.

ID4-3 will reveal that the aliens that were in ID4-2 were also enslaved by another race of aliens, but this time the enslaving aliens are humans from the future. So Will Smith must save the human race from itself.

needs more explosions
instead of a warehouse, lets have the Powerbook from ID4-2 be located in the Smithsonian (which survived the White House blowing up in the ID4-1) and there is a giant plaque that reads "The computer that saved humanity" (this is shown in the first 5 minutes as Will Smith’s teenage son sees it as part of a school field trip, sort of a Chekov’s Gun if you will). However, the aliens also discover the location of the mythical Powerbook so Will Smith must break into the Smithsonian and remove the Powerbook just before the aliens can destroy it. Big explosion, end scene.

For you people who have organized your music collection

When you tag a song that you own on two different albums, a studio album and a greatest hits album, which album do you attach it to? I can’t decide what’s better: having a studio album with all tracks, or having an easy-to-add greatest hits album with most of their popular stuff.

You have probably forgotten me by now
meanwhile i will still be waiting for you
I didn’t want to leave so that if some day
you wanted to return, you’d find me still

That is why I am still in the same place
In the same town and with the same people
So that when you return you find nothing strange
And it will be like before and (we) never leave each other (again)

I am probably asking too much
I had forgotten we were finished
That you will never return, that you never loved me
I had forgotten again that only I loved you

A nice ballad by Los Lonely Boys

A poco no esta
duro pa ti
Pa que sigues asi
Si aqui esto yo

Nunca te hacer
sentido que ya
parece el final
Pues fijate en mí
Tu encontraras Contestacion

Fijate en ti
Muy dentro de ti
Tu vas a encontrarme a mi
Para darte amor

Que evita, que no sientes
Cuando te tengo cerca de mi
Yo quiero acerte bien
Quiero apretarte mas
Yo quiero que sepas tu

Que cuando estas cerca de mi
Ya no tienes que llorar
Porque yo estaré alli
Para darte en mi amor

Que evita, que no sientes
Cuando te tengo cerca de mi
Yo quiero acerte bien
Quiero apretarte mas
Yo quiero que sepas tu

Cuando estas cerca de mi
Ya no tienes que llorar

It looks so stupid. Especially when they are gigantic.

Team KP

by Roybot on May 5, 2010 4:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I believe that it is because they aren't comfortable running around without a t-shirt on

which doesn’t bode well for their NBA prospects as that is one of the basic job requirements of playing in the NBA

its common to wear something under the jersey to prevent chaffing

Should the Blazers trade up in the draft? Should they trade down? Should they package Rudy+Juwan+picks+filler for CP3? I don’t know and really as long as we don’t get somebody who wore a t-shirt under his jersey in college, I don’t care.

A good friend of mine who was in the film is Guatemalan, she thought he was a Mexican.
The film is about two brothers who set off in an old RV with a female photographer and a mexican guy (a character who i kept going back and forth on whether or not the portrayal was racist, but he was basically a prop) to find the sasquatch.

also, this doesn’t explain the phenomena of Kobe being a 13th pick with no hype, or the Pistons winning without a superstar.

Also, Tim Duncan isn’t the most marketable fellow around, and he’s won quite a few.

Donaghy = lame sauce

by prezofdeath on May 5, 2010 8:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Kobe developed his own hype

Yeah, ESPN marketed Oden a lot until the first season began (magazine cover, ESPYs appearance with Timberlake, …). Now it’s all Durant all the time and we have lost out in terms of ref/NBA favors.

by Norsktroll on May 5, 2010 9:35 PM PDT up reply actions

I remember Kobe was pretty hyped

Even watched that draft last year (or so) because it was on NBA TV, and he was VERY hyped during the broadcast… how he makes all his teammates better, Jordan’s name came up, etc.

I think Tim Donaghy is half right, kinda sorta, and also telling people exactly what they fear. Yes, we gotta be real good to win. We won’t likely be gifted big players like the Lakers or Celtics… of course until the KG trade the Celtics weren’t getting big steals of deals like the Lakers get, and the Lakers benefit a lot from being a place a young horny player wants to go to.

Much better practical special effects instead of bad CGI ones, better (anti-)hero in a better makeup, better direction (he actually understood child psychology from his education), etc. It still holds up as a good movie.

The Tories will have the prime minister

Brown will step down as party leader probably, but I’ve not followed the results closely if it will be really really bad for him or just a defeat. I don’t want too many anti-EU parties getting many seats, but a few protest voters will probably pick the right and left edges of the political spectrum. There was a Time preview of the election a few weeks ago, and some of those statements were pretty ridiculous in disillusioning about an open-minded society.

There is a rumor that the Nets will take control of a D-League team in the next few days likely the Springfield Armor (their current affiliate). Teams that are serious about developing young players go to that model more and more (Lakers, Rockets, Thunder, Spurs, Mavs). Blazers: Not especially interested. Sending Patty there was the first time they really used it in ages (unlike for Sergio or Jerryd).

I’m not entirely sold on it being a hugely profitable venture… owning the team is nice, but I don’t think it’s ultimately that meaningful.

by Cablinasian on May 5, 2010 10:45 PM PDT up reply actions

It means you can influence the style of play much more, and also develop your own coaches

You can outright own it, or own it in a hybrid model like the Rockets do (and the Nets might). It takes the other partner team also out of the equation. I’ve discussed it with Scott Schroeder a tiny bit, and I also said the Warriors did well plucking DL talent without owning a team. But he seems convinced it’s the new trend.

by Norsktroll on May 5, 2010 10:52 PM PDT up reply actions

We've also been usually using our first or 2nd year players

Aside from Patty of course. But maybe they felt using him as a body in practice was more important.

ESPN's Gottlieb is hating on a number of draft candidates, including Cabbie's main man Eric Bledsoe (insider, but RU has the goods)
Orton’s Kentucky teammate, Eric Bledsoe, is a Westbrook-type of athlete, but he is not close to the finished prospect that even Westbrook was after two years in college. Bledsoe has a very average handle, is a streaky (though improving) shooter and not only did he play very little at the point, but the team played very poorly with him leading the way instead of John Wall.

Harry: Shel? Sheldon? No, no, you did not have great sex with Sheldon.

Sally: I did too.

Harry: No you didn’t. A Sheldon can do your income taxes, if you need a root canal, Sheldon’s your man… but humpin’ and pumpin’ is not Sheldon’s strong suit. It’s the name. ‘Do it to me Sheldon, you’re an animal Sheldon, ride me big Sheldon.’ Doesn’t work.

Roybot, you wondered what I was doing in the Idol thread

I was going in order of the alphabet and doing an auto-filled title of a post that I had done before… for each letter. I’d type, say, “G”, and then scroll through the options. Then H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q. R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z, and before I did G, I had done A, B, C, D, E, and F.

You know, the alphybet!

I was using the "autofill" feature

So it could only autofill stuff I’ve written on this laptop, on this website… ya know what I mean?

I wasn’t searching old posts or anything… I would just type a letter, and then every post I’ve ever written (on this laptop, and maybe not every post ever but close) that started with that letter would pop up.

This laptop is super screwy

I did a “print screen” to show you what it looks like when I type something and the options autofill gives me, and I was gonna edit it in Paint and upload it, but my computer keeps crashing and not letting me.

I gotta get a new laptop. I can last a few months with this one and keep what I do to the bare minimum, but it’s annoying. Always crashing.

Also, the plug is loose, so I got a Government Handbook on Dealing with Terrorism propping the plug up, because it has to be at the right angle to work.

It’s so lame when the plug doesn’t work. I went through like 3 plugs with my old puter because they would stop working when they got bent too much and started to fall apart.
