"An agreement with Sandro Rosell, a candidate for the presidency of Barcelona, for 3 seasons at a rate of 2.5 million euros each (7.5 total) could be the deciding factor for Rudy to play for Barcelona next season ."

This is a new article although this speculation has been out there for awhile. Barcelona I believe will play in Euroleague next year so this new opening would likely place Rudy in a starting role of a Spanish powerhouse. What do you think?

He is under contract.

He cannot leave unless we allow him to. FIBA honors NBA contracts because if they didn’t the NBA would not honor theirs and start plucking their talent. If Rudy wants out he will probably have to force a trade to another NBA team.

True in theory but in practice they cannot use a disgruntled player

Juan Carlos Navarro played for Memphis I believe 1 year and broke his contract to return to Spain. The resolution, as noted in the article is a monetary settlement with the team by the new team.

If the Blazers refuse to release Rudy the chances of signing another Spanish future (Claver etc) will likely diminish as well. It more likely forces a trade for Rudy to a team needing a starter (Minnesota would be a natural with the rights to Ricky as well).

Rudy is in no position to hold the Blazers hostage

He’s under contract. The only way we let him go is if management simply wants him to go away. No way. He’s has worth on the trade block, if not the team.

Still on the Rex bandwagon.

I do see that side of things and yet the Navarro precedent and the Claver rights make it more complex as well

I don’t see Portland doing this for money alone. KP would have to have another chip to make it work but I don’t know what that might be.

by lee3022 on May 20, 2010 10:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Navarro

doesn’t apply to Rudy, because Memphis didn’t want him either, where as Portland still wants Rudy.

by usmcr3049 on May 21, 2010 8:10 AM PDT up reply actions

unless Rudy makes Portland not want him

by straying away from the game plan during playoff games?

It’s always difficult to prove, but at some point the coaching staff is going to throw up their hands. Back in March, Jason Filippi said that there was a trade for Rudy that was all ready to go but was nixed by Paul Allen. That tells me the front office won’t hesitate to try dealing *5, again

There’s no way they should let him out of his contract due to “disinterested behavior” That sets a bad precedent

in one of his latest blog entries

Rudy was talking wistfully about how Navarro was able to return to play in Spain

I’d rather just flip him and Claver’s rights at this point. Spanish players and Portland just haven’t been a good match. I’ll take one more Frenchy for the two Spaniards, and call it good

If only it were that easy

There is nothing about Portland that makes Spanish players mismatched

1. Sergio was drafted to be a future after several more years overseas. Sergio insisted on a contact and the Blazers were required to offer one or to release his rights. He was not ready but that is not on Portland.

2. Rudy had a great year as a rookie. Without Greg in the middle and losing games from injury Rudy did have a difficult year. But that does not mean he cannot play in Portland. The long-term issue is Rudy’s desire to play more minutes. He did that in his rookie year and when he is consistently hitting the three he might be returned to those minutes. Sophomore slumps are pretty common in the NBA.

3. Victor Claver is a different player than Sergio or Rudy. Being Spanish does not mean he will not flourish here when he comes over.

Sorry but this comes across as biased and short-sighted. I know that is not you and I appreciate your many comments and contributions around the site even when I disagree with some.

by lee3022 on May 20, 2010 10:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Come on, now

Sergio complained about his role and minutes, so has Rudy. Don’t sugarcoat what we all have heard and read about, for the past 2-3 years. Sophomore slumps happen to sophomores, not 24 year-olds with 7 years of professional experience

I realize Claver is a different player. But he’s surely aware of what’s happened with Rodriguez and Fernandez in Portland, how could he not be? Even if he’s willing to overlook the past, I’m not sold on Victor as the kind of player that the Blazers will need in the future. He’s a skinny forward who’s not a 3, like Batum, VC has a similar body style to Outlaw. I’d rather see a feisty Dante Cunningham develop into that 4-3 role, and adding Claver in a year or two would just create an unnecessary logjam.

If VC’s stock is rising in Europe, flip him. Unless you want to wait around for him to come over to the NBA (with a lot of Euro hype attached) and start complaining about how little he’s playing, or how the Blazer’s style doesn’t suit his game, etc.

Complaining about minutes is endemic to non-starting NBA players

Again, Sergio was not ready to come and never understood his development needs. That is not Spanish but an immature player.

Rudy was embarrassed about his drop in production and frustrated that there was going to be no opportunity to start on the team. This is also not unique to Spanish players.

Here is another whiner story
Any truth to the rumors that (Omri) Casspi wants to be traded? If so, what value would he have at this point? Voisin: Casspi was like a lot of rookies at the end of their first season. They all whine about their lack of minutes. I don’t disagree that he should have played more. Same for Donté Greene. I never understand the point in playing Nocioni and (Ime) Udoka so many minutes when the team was terrible. … I think Omri is fine. He is just very emotional and became discouraged. Hey, welcome to the NBA! But forget about a trade. The Kings have big plans for Casspi. Sacramento Bee

Nate asked all of the players to "buy in" to their roles, last fall

as far as I know, the only players who have make any noise about their PT during the past 2 years are…Sergio and Rudy. The local media has tried to sweep many of these incidents under the rug, but if you’ve followed their careers on BE, you already know that there’s been discontent.

Jarrett Jack also expressed concerns about his role and now he’s in Toronto. It’s not just about the Spanish guards, but the Blazers have had a deep roster for awhile and the players who aren’t willing to make “sacrifices” for the common goal have tended to be weeded out

Rudy’s got next

Bayless requested a trade earlier in the season, and Miller complained about not being used properly

The difference there was that the players, imho, were right. They could have been helping the team more than they were being allowed to. Once set free, they did what they said they could, and helped the team.

Sergio and Rudy were given opportunities to step up, but they didn’t.

I don’t think it needs to be an intolerant, xenophobic type of thing, as it seems some people are suggesting Larue’s comments are. Rather, we need to understand that these guys are heroes and All-Stars in their home countries. Then they see guys like Pau and Calderon who adapt relatively well, and think they can do the same thing. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. Is there something about Spaniards that makes them bad NBA players? No, but there is something about playing in Spanish leagues that sets up unrealistic expectations in the minds of players like Navarro, Sergio, and Rudy. They want to be big in the NBA the way they were in Spain, but they can’t be, so it affects them differently than perhaps other players of a similar caliber in different leagues.

Rudy also said he lost his confidence

and he passed up shots in the post season. For a starting shooting guard who’s supposedly world-renowned for his marksmanship, that’s unacceptable

You can hold out hope that “all will be well again with #5” next fall, but I’m moving on like he’s going to playing for a different team, next season. I think the writing’s been on the wall for awhile, and the ink is indelible

While I think this article my be stretching the truth.

Rudy can get out of his contract. He may pay a penalty or have to return all of the money he has been paid so far but he can get out of it. Maybe FIBA has a rule that won’t allow him to play if he breaks a contract but there is always a way out of a contract.

by Escrote on May 20, 2010 10:51 PM PDT up reply actions

there is no buyout clause in NBA contracts that I know if

like in Fiba contracts. Rudy is stuck with the Blazers unless the Blazers want to buy him out, which they won’t because he will still count toward the cap and they will have lost his services, and possibly an asset in trade talks. Rudy will be back with the Blazers next year, I am sure of it. If anything he will be traded to another NBA team, but there is 0 chance in my mind that he will be playing in Europe next season.

by usmcr3049 on May 21, 2010 8:14 AM PDT up reply actions

I dunno... I think any contract can be broken.

I mean Rudy can just refuse to come to work. You can’t physically make him come to the RG and play. Sure that would make everything ugly and I doubt Rudy would go that far but at that point the Blazers would probably be looking to recover the majority of the money they have paid out so far.

by Escrote on May 21, 2010 10:31 AM PDT up reply actions

FWIW...

I agree Rudy will not break the contract, my point is simply that were there is a will there is a way.

by Escrote on May 21, 2010 10:32 AM PDT up reply actions

If Rudy refused to come to work

the Blazer could fine him per day he doesn’t come to work under the terms of his contract. Those fines, if he sat out a whole year, would come close to covering his contract is my guess since it is so cheap.

But I don’t believe Rudy or his agent would go that far, because it would severly damage his reputation around the NBA, no other team would touch him if he was to do it, so he would bascially be resigning himself to never play in the NBA again.

I was waiting for this to be posted

Its a total fabrication, even the quotes are bad. What the Barcelona president said was, quite literally:

“We have talked with him” Rossell has said “And we told him what we would like to do. Its true that he said he liked our overall project, but we have not bought him. I suppose that he would be thrilled if he played for Barca”,

So, thats like if I said that I think Rudy would like to play in Africa because I showed him around and he said it was nice.

Thanks for the better translation than Google translate gives!

I saw this hours ago while I was at work but didn’t want to jump to any conclusions based on a computer generated translation. Everytime there’s something on Marca about Rudy everyone gets riled up but when there’s finally a better translation it’s not nearly as crazy as it initially seemed. Besides, he’s said a few times over the season he isn’t closing any doors but he prefers to stay in the NBA. They’ve all heard how he’s been unhappy this season so I’m not surprised he’s being approached to go back … but it’s not that simple with his contract here and even then, doesn’t mean he’s interested enough to actually do it.

by somanluna on May 20, 2010 10:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks for the update - but there is an attraction for Rudy?

Opportunity to start and to play with Ricky?

It makes it easier to trade Rudy if it is Minnesota to play together there with some pretty good bigs. Rudy’s presence will help get Ricky to come next year. All supposition of course.

Ah. . . love or money - the age old question

Most men pick money because with money it is easier to find love.

The real problem is that the money clouds the ability to see the difference

I have never had that problem (money) but some of my clients did and it is very hard to discern every relationship possibility as to the motives involved. It tends to harden one and that is sad.

Rudy Fernandez could be bought out for nothing by the Portland Trail Blazers, which is what happened to ...

foreign players who failed to succeed at the NBA level such as Arvydas Macijauskas, Vassilis Spanoulis, et al.

I wouldn't call Rudy a failure on their level.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Ash.

by Name's Ash on May 21, 2010 8:05 AM PDT up reply actions

this won't happen as he's under contract, but the prevailing truth here is real

Rudy can make just as much money, if not more, playing in his home country, at a level close to the NBA, while being a main cog and starter, with the admiration and fame of his countrymen

Why would he want to stay and re-sign with the Blazers to play behind BRoy? I’ve said it for some time, but since his contract is so affordable, we should use him as a sweetner with another player and trade him while we can still get value for him

by rip_city_swagger on May 21, 2010 9:44 AM PDT reply actions

Rudy can make just as much money, if not more, playing in his home country,

Reports were that he could’ve made 3 times more money if he had signed with CSKA back in ‘08, so who can blame him for having "buyer’s remorse" now? His dream to play in the NBA has turned into a slow burn, and his back injury (when his leg was numb) had to be scary. He may have realized that he might not have years and years to make money playing BB. Rudy says he just wants to be happy, and I feel bad for him, because he and his agent had to take the standard NBA rookie contract for the 24th pick and (as far as we know) there is no escape clause. But I don’t want Portland to buy him out and just let him walk away, a trade would be best for all parties concerned
