He’s also a good rebounder and passer. I could see him fit well into our rotation, he would make things easier e.g. in a second unit with Bayless. But he will likely command more than the MLE in this market with so many teams having cap space.

And a good defender; he can defend 2’s and 3’s.

So signing anyone to the MLE could put us over the cap, then we pay tax on that, plus the salary, plus

we don’t get that 3 million dollar rebate. The example he gave was Mike Miller putting us over by 4.8 million.

So his contract cost us 5.8 million, plus another 4.8 million, and we don’t get that 3 million for being under. Yeah, that’s nearly 14 million dollars on a role player. I don’t think Portland will use the MLE.

Over the luxury tax
Portland is already over the cap.

sounds like Mr. Kramer and I are on the same wavelength

but I already suspected that, based on some of his past responses

If Martell (and Rudy) were traded to move up in the draft, it would be a lot easier to use that MLE

No need to be formal

Just call me Kramer like so many of my friends do.

I’ve been “Kramer” for over 25 years, long before Seinfeld. In fact, when the show started to get popular, people would tell me that I finally had a television character named after me….

On the topic of MLE use by the Blazers, I would like to think that if the right player were available, the team would use the MLE to sign him. At the same time, if they choose not to use the MLE, I certainly understand why….

Technical problems

The streaming version Dave skips for me, and I have a very fast connection.

The “downloadable” version cannot be downloaded. I tried Foxfire and IE.

I guess not everybody is having problems, but … what the hey?

Mike Miller

because he can shoot, pass, and rebound. Aside from injuries, he’s a consistent shooter, something we don’t have in Rudy/Webster

The name's Ash...housewares.

by Tjdragt on May 20, 2010 3:46 PM PDT reply actions

I think having two Miller's on a team would just

not be good for our t.v. blazer commentators. Rice would make a comment about Miller. Barrett would be confused and correct or ask which Miller he’s talking about. Rice would give an unintelligible answer because would forgot which one he was talking about. For 82+ games! and radio time! Blazer’s Courtside too! I think the LaMarcus/Marcus thing is already crossing the line.

Okay, that was just a big JK. I love Mike Rice’s commentary! Mike Miller would be interesting. He MIGHT get us out of the first round based on the consistent shooting but beyond that, I don’t know.

...and that's the bottom line 'cause nicolas batum said so!

by Trunkpunch on May 20, 2010 4:04 PM PDT reply actions

correction:

*beyond that, he won’t get us far. Point is: I don’t think he would be a “missing” piece, though I don’t have any other suggestions.

that's a good point about rice.lol

I’m not saying Mike Miller is a missing piece, he’d just be a very nice piece compared to Rudy/Martell/Bayless

This is another reason I was suggesting that the Blazers sign Lamar "Odom" as a FA last July

ah,

I vaguely remember reading those. We might as well trade to get rudy gay. Imagine how confused rice would be when the crowd chants: Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!

Rice: The Rose Garden. What a great crowd. Rudy is on the bench doing nothing and their chanting his name anyways!

Barrett: Well, that’s because Fernandez is on the floor and just hit his 3rd three in a row.

Rice: But Rudy is on the bench?!

Barrett: No, Rudy Gay is on the bench. The crowd is cheering for Rudy Fernandez.

Rice: I’ve had one too many martini’s.

Barrett: Did you just say that on the air? Oh who am I kidding. I should have stopped being surprised at anything you say on the air a long time ago.

LOL, I can definitely imagine that conversation occurring on a blazer broadcast.

Kyle Korver

is another guy I’d like to see come in, he may not be as versatile as Miller, but he’s lights out and a decent help-defender. I don’t mean to grab a great player, but a proven, solid player

picking up a book that listed how much autographs of sports figures were worth. I noticed that an autograph by Terry Dischinger (former NBA player and now orthodontist) was worth $5. My first thought was, “Hey, I know him. I could get him to sign 100 autographs for me and make some money….” Of course, I never asked him once reality set it…..

Even though Mike Miller has cut his lucious locks, I still trump him as an offensively versatile backup ...

swingman who’d bring things to the table that are lacking with Martell Webster and Rudy Fernandez. Those things include consistent long-range shooting, smooth handles, and proficient rebounding for someone at his position.

One thing I didn't say on the podcast

in response to Dave’s question about taking advantage of this summer’s situation, yes, the Blazers could be on the other end of an uneven trade. For example, if some team under the cap watches as one free agent after another turns them down and decides that trading a 2nd round pick for Martell Webster would be a steal, then that would be something for the organization to consider. This is something that two4larue has been in favor of in order to create enough room below the luxury tax threshold to be able to make an MLE signing without necessarily going over the threshold.

Such a deal

could also open up another roster spot as well for a potential FA signing or to be able to sign a draft pick.

I imagine that Bedgers would be up in arms if this scenario played out

I mean think of it, trading the #6 pick in the ’05 drat for a 2nd rounder in 2010—unthinkable!

But like KP (and the others) were talking about during the Sloan conference, deals are about money just as much as talent, these days. And different teams have different windows. I like Martell, but I’m not sure he’s the ideal role player to come off the bench behind Nic and shoot the ball consistently well in limited minutes. If there’s a veteran swing man who the Blazers think could fill this role better (and who they feel that they hadve a reasonable shot at signing with the MLE) then perhaps dealing Marty on draft day to “carve out” another 5 mil under the LT threshold would make sense. (After all, there’s a big difference between paying a role player 5.8 mil and having to commit 11.6 mil to that same acquisition—even for Paul Allen.)

I hope it doesn’t come to this, and the front office will be free to exceed the LT threshold. But if the Vulcans say “no!” then KP may have to make some hard decisions on draft day, to hopefully upgrade Nate’s bench and build a roster that can potentially go deep in the playoffs, next spring.

by two4larue on May 20, 2010 9:59 PM PDT up reply actions

If Kevin Pritchard can sign Mike Miller to a multi-year contract worth the MLE, then I'm down with ...

moving Martell Webster in a straight salary dump — such as to a team that’ll be under the cap after the July moratorium (e.g., Los Angeles Clippers) for nothing but a future draft pick (e.g., 2011 second-round pick via Detroit through Los Angeles) — since that’d shore up the payroll.

Oh, and even if the Clippers do sign Rudy Gay, the team will still need to acquire a backup like Webster for him, as both starting small forward Rasual Butler and backup small forward Travis Outlaw are likely to bolt town.

by AK1984 on May 20, 2010 10:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Steal???

“a 2nd round pick for Martell Webster would be a steal” for any team.

That would be a slap to KP – never happen!

by spencerbutte on May 20, 2010 10:08 PM PDT up reply actions

remember

Marty wasn’t drafted by KP. Allen told Nash that Webster was the guy he wanted after Marty shot the lights out during his predraft workout. John had drafted Telfair the year before and didn’t want to select PGs in the lottery in back to back years, so he traded down and picked Marty and Jack (a combo guard who could hypothetically play alongside Bassy)

What an epic fail that ‘05 draft was for Portland! (KP was in favor of choosing CP3 at #3, but he wasn’t in charge of the war room, yet)

by appel82 on May 21, 2010 12:13 AM PDT reply actions

I've thought of a few players worth looking at if they moved up

In the interview, it was discussed the possibility of the teams picking in the 10-12 range wanting to move out of the pick, If the Blazers were to move around this area there are three players I wouldn’t mind looking at: Hassan Whiteside (someone to potentially groom in case Greg can’t stay healthy), Xavier Henry (from what I’ve read and some of what I’ve seen, kind of reminds me of a young Brandon) and possibly Ed Davis (a player who was projected to go in the top five earlier but may slip a bit).

By the way, nice job Kramer – enjoyed listening to the information you shared.
