It was poll=fail.
There was no option for yes.
"[S]ince men enjoyed very great leisure, they used it to pursue many kinds of commodities unknown to their fathers, and that was that first yoke they placed upon themselves without thinking about it, and the first source of evils the prepared for their descendants. For, besides continuing thus to soften body and mind, as these commodities had lost almost all their pleasantness through habit, and as they had at the same time degenerated into true needs, being deprived of them became much more cruel than possessing them was sweet; and people were unhappy to lose them without being happy to have them." -Jean-Jacques Rousseau
stop pandering to the masses
"I told somebody to stop crying," Pendergraph said after the game. "Actually, I told them all to stop crying."
But it says yes, as though I wanted it.
I was hoping for something that would include chunky, smooth and gross. The way you have it phrased is as though people eat the stuff instead of what it is really intended for.

Since I started using cards to pay for most stuff, I haven’t had this feeling for a long time. I miss it. I may just hide some cash in a winter coat so I can get that feeling again next December.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
So.....that being said
how long before they stop calling them “checking accounts” and start calling them “debit accounts”??

When people stop using checks at the grocery store.
I expect to see grandma’s using checks, but the other day I was at Costco, and a perfectly normal looking 40 year old guy was paying by check. It took forever, and I couldn’t believe someone under 70 was using a check.
People: stop with the checks already. Unless you are paying bills, but that is risky. I had my mail stolen, and someone copied my check to buy about $300 worth of stuff from Fred Meyer.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
i was suprised when my ma started using a debit card
she is a granny so that was suprising. she still writes the amount in her check book though. still faster than writing it all out.

i was just looking through all the movies i’ve rated on Netflix. the 3 star rating is tough. my range of “good movie” to “not good but not bad” is pretty wide in those 3 star ratings. the 1 and 2 star ratings are pretty straightforward.
...when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].
i’m just going to give this a three star rating and not actually either read it or have an opinion on it.
netflix’s opinion of me kind of freaks me out; especially the movies, that it’s like “most members think this is almost a 4 but you’ll probably think it’s a 2”

they’ve actually done a pretty good job with rating stuff for me so far. there are exceptions though, like Big Fan. they had it almost 4 stars for me and i rated it 2.
in instances where they think most members like it a lot but they don’t think i will i think, “they must know how good my taste in film is.”

That guy should study the Ladder Theory. From that point forward, he won't get stuck in the friend zone.
This is an issue that plagues both genders; yet, since I’m a guy, I feel more comfortable giving advice from a male perspective. So, with regards to any men out there who are friends with a woman and want more out of the relationship, you must be upfront with them immediately and don’t let things drag out over time.
Oh, and if she doesn’t want to take the relationship to a further level, then it’s up to you as the guy to cut ties with her altogether; otherwise, she’s just using you for friendship and, as a result, you’re wasting your time on a lost cause.
In essence, my advice to guys is only be friends with a woman to start with if that’s all you’ll ever want out of things between the two of you. If you want more from the get-go, though, then make your intentions clear as day. That way, there’ll be no confusion over a long period of time and, more importantly, things won’t end on an awkward note.
That was funny
and pretty true

Odd soccer injury story that could have some impact on the upcoming world cup
In the English FA Cup final, Chelsea’s Michael Ballack who is the team captain of the German national team got rudely fouled by Kevin-Prince Boateng, who is a national team player for Ghana. Now Ballack has a ligament damage in his ankle, and will miss the world championships severely reducing the chances of his team. While getting up there in age he’s still one of the most dangerous players and the team leader. Kind of like if the Blazers would miss Roy or maybe more aptly a team like the Spurs missing Duncan. Ghana is in Germany’s group, so Boateng also made life a bit easier for his team though it is debatable if it was a an intentional flagrant foul or just a very dumb/hard/unlucky one, and ensured a game that will likely be led very hard.
To make things even weirder, Kevin-Prince Boateng has two brothers, George and Jerome. Guess what Jerome is: Another national team player for Germany, since he has dual citizenship.
Chelsea is about as cursed as the Blazers are in terms of injuries
They had no healthy defensive subs by the end of the year.
But because there is no salary cap, they are so deep it didn’t matter.
BLUE IS THE COLOUR!
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I’m not a big Chelsea fan, but I’m sad for Ballack. He always has bad luck in the big tournaments getting to the finals and then being injured, being suspended (2002 took a yellow card to prevent South Korea from scoring that cost him the finals against Brazil), or just having a bad day and losing. He’s kind of like Karl Malone or other NBA players who everyone knows are good but never got it all together to win titles.
I know, I like him
I hope another Chelsea player, Essien, is fit for the cup for Ghana. If he isn’t, Ghana is in serious trouble.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I dunno, the Germans were pretty lucky to make it as far as they did in ’02 and ’06, and the final in Euro ’08. They were clearly in the weaker side of the bracket in ’02 and ’08, and were very lucky to get by Argentina on penalties after being largely outplayed in ’06 (awful coaching by Pekerman let them back into it).
So I’d say Ballack has been more lucky to get as far as he has than a guy who’s never gotten together. I’d also say his performances have been largely outstanding in those tournament runs, so he doesn’t deserve a Malone-like reputation for crapping the bed when it matters.
And an odd draft order by Doug Gottlieb: Luke Babbitt? Really?
Ridiculous Upside presents: Doug Gottlieb is Crazy (and So Can You)
Wow, Doug Gottlieb is out of his mind.
If anyone is Adam Morrison in the 2010 NBA Draft, it’s Luke Babbitt.
Furthermore, I see Gottlieb is another person who wrongly compares Gordon Hayward to Mike Miller. No, Gottlieb, Miller is actually athletic rather than just deceptively fluid, ultra-efficient from the field rather than a streak shooter, and uses his crafty handles to be a willing passer rather than a selfish ball hog. Hayward, however, is an exact carbon copy of Mike Dunleavy, Jr., with no M&M added in whatsoever.
Also, Gottlieb is a loon if he believes Greg Monroe — who’s just another power soft forward in the mold of LMA/David West — is a top-three talent; that’s preposterous! Evan Turner, DeMarcus Cousins, and Derrick Favors are all clearly ahead of Monroe — although I’m not sold on Favors as the next Amar’e Stoudemrie, but that’s not the point here — while there’s another 4 to 8 prospects (e.g., . Al-Farouq Aminu, Cole Aldrich, Patrick Patterson, et al.) who are arguably better than him, too.
every draft class
needs a white guy to talk about.
The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Ash.
Who's the third one?
Unless you mean Kyle Singler, who I agree is overhyped; he should’ve left Duke early to swindle some NBA team into picking him in the first round this year.

but he is by far the most accomplished player to come to the MLS, over the hill or not. He was a top-5 player from 2002-05, and might have been the best player in the world in 03/04.
Yeah, and when used right he might still be more productive than he was recently in Spain where they used him on the wing and made him fairly useless. He needs to play inside.
that is a myth

he didn’t mean to post it as a comment, and I think there’s enough substance in it to be worth a fanpost even if it’s a similar topic to the FP post.
I respectfully disagree
ULC does that almost every time there is a main page Bayless post. It’s no different than what Arron Sass used to do when Dave wrote a game recap and then Sass wrote his own.
by tominhawaii on May 17, 2010 10:25 AM PDT up reply actions
Nah, Aaron Sass was just writing altogether superfluous game recaps.
ULC, however, is writting a dissenting opinion to Dave’s Jerryd Bayless write-up.
So, even though I disagree with ULC’s opinions on Bayless, I don’t mind him voicing it.
isn’t that the purpose of the comment system though? to voice dissenting or agreeing opinions on a topic in the main post

Wow, ESPN Radio has some awesome announcing teams for the Conference Finals.
Eastern Conference Finals: Jim Durham & Dr. Jack Ramsay
Western Conference Finals: Kevin Calabro & Hubie Brown
It’s a sad state of affairs when both radio announcing crews are better than the three-man TV annoucing crew of Mike Breen, Mark Jackson, and Jeff Van Gundy — with Doris Burke roaming the sidelines, as well as Stuart Scott, Magic Johnson, Jon Barry, and Michael Wilbon spouting nonsense in studio — but that’s just the way the cookie crumbles.
That studio crew is unwatchable. I still think the Breen/Jackson/JVG booth is pretty good though, if annoying at times.
JVG can be annoying to be sure
He always KNOWS what is best.
Oh and for Jackson, Mama there goes that bad commentary.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I don't mind Mike Breen and do enjoy Jeff Van Gundy as an analyst, although I loathe Mark Jackson.
Regarding Breen, though, I’d much rather can him and bring Brad Nessler back from the college ranks, as well as tell Jackson to take a hike — or finally try his hand at coaching — and beg Doc Rivers to take another stab at color commentating. Yet, if Rivers stays on with the Boston Celtics, then bring back that goofball Tom Tolbert to use in that role.
Oh, now that I thought more about it, I’ve got a play-by-play man even better and more accomplished to replace Breen with than Nessler: Brent Musburger. The Portland native is still employed at ABC/ESPN and, moreover, he’s got a knack for basketball that dates back to the ’70s. If nothing else, Musburger, Tolbert, and Van Gundy would make for one interesting announcing crew.
Musberger and Herbstreit on College FB is an awesome duo
I always enjoy their broadcasts.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Tom Tolbert : Basketball :: Petros Papadakis : Football.
Unlike Tolbert, though, Papadakis’ shrill voice grates on my nevers.

he is retiring after the season from all sports.. maybe wrong but i think i heard that about Musburger

I'd rather see Mike Tirico instead of Stuart Scott, Tim Legler instead of Jon Barry, Mark Jones ...
instead of Michael Wilbon, and a reporter like Ric Bucher or Marc Stein instead of the unnecessary Magic Johnson. Wow, it shows how much I hate Barry when I stump for a subpar in-studio analyst like Legler.
Oh, and if ESPN wants a so-called ambassador to the game on its set, then bring back Bill ...
Walton over Magic Johnson. Walton may ramble a lot and go off on nonsensical tangents, but at least he isn’t a boring dullard ol’ Earvin.
I like Mike Breen
although it seemed odd to have JVG announcing an Orlando game. I guess the announcing teams stay together.

my thing is, why take this year and waste Cliff Lee on a pretty small chance at the playoffs? Trade off Lee and whoever else and bring in some real prospects to play with Ackley, Felix, Guti, and co. There’s no sense in wasting Lee and letting him leave for a few picks.

When you trade for prospects, its obviously hit or miss, but there are plenty of examples of a contender sending elite prospects for an aging star.
maybe sabean will trade him for buster posey, since the giants don’t need a hitter and they need a 5th starter!

The factors Hollinger included were usage rate (i.e., lower > higher), TS%, offensive rebound rate, turnover rate, and FG% on long 2s.

Kirk Hinrich would still be there, for it'd be Luol Deng, James Johnson, and Taj Gibson ...
leaving in a massive sign-and-trade deal. Well, it’d be those three along with a bunch of draft picks and some cash considerations.
So, yeah, the lineup would be Joakim Noah/Chris Bosh/LeBron James/Hinrich/Derrick Rose.
They would instantly become if not the favorites in the east
Certainly up there with Orlando.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Better
Rose despite his lack of outside shooting is already at least as dangerous as Mo Williams, Hinrich is as good as West or Parker, LeBron is LeBron, Bosh/Amare/Boozer would be better than Hickson or Varejao, and Noah would be better than the current iteration of Shaq and Z. And Calipari would be better than Mike Brown. And Paxson better than Danny Ferry.
I bet wherever LeBron + another top free agent or draft pick will go, other vet free agents will want to go too in order to win a title.

Brown had an unexpected breakout performance which took place in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Cleveland Cavaliers on May 18, 2008, when he scored 10 points and pulled down 6 rebounds, hitting all of his four shots and making key contributions in the 4th quarter. He hit a key shot with less than two minutes left in the game as the Celtics went on to win the game 97-92.12 After the game, he told reporters: “That shot, hey, probably I would say the biggest shot of my career”.13 He also had a strong performance in Game 1 of the 2008 NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers on June 5, 2008, playing increased minutes in the first Finals game of his 15-year career en route to a Celtics victory.14
Alonzo Mourning and Gary Payton worked fine together.

Do we think Hollinger created the rating first or decided that Bosh should top the rating, and then tweaked the numbers to make it so?
maybe
I really thing Stoudemire would be the best fit, at least on offense. Hits the long two, awesome off the ball movement that would really benefit from LeBron drawing attention and passing.
I wonder how different the series is if they have Amare instead of Jamison
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Oddly enough, I believe Dirk Nowitzki would theoretically be the best fit alongside LeBron James.
Nowitzki can stretch the floor further and more efficiently than Chris Bosh and Amar’e Stoudemire, as well as isn’t a complete sieve on defense with no handles like Antawn Jamison was next to him this season.
I, moreover, think that Devin Harris and Derrick Rose may cause more problems than Baron Davis. Both Harris and Rose are high-usage dribble-drive point guards — as well as youngsters looking to make their own mark in this league — while Davis, who’s undeniably an inefficient ball hog at times, might be more willing to take a backseat to James and could raise his efficiency from downtown via those open looks the “King” would afford him.

Protest outside Staples Center on Monday May17th, at 5pm to denounce Lakers Coach Phil Jackson for his support of Racist Arizona bill SB1070.
We all know that a great deal of our community members support the Lakers. This could potentially be a highly publicized event…since it is playoff game 1 against LOS SUNS.
We can announce The Great March in ARIZONA on May 29th and strengthen our momentum, as well as the boycott of Arizona Diamonbacks on May 31st.People want the LAKERS to take a stand or for Phil Jackson to clarify his position on the racist bill that criminalizes fans.

Yeah....a lot depends on your definition of Television
I found this quote in that same article
Philo Farnsworth gave the world’s first public demonstration of an all-electronic television system, using a live camera, at the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia on August 25, 1934, and for ten days afterwards.
But it had been in development for many, many years prior to that

In 1927, Philo Farnsworth made the world’s first working television system with electronic scanning of both the pickup and display devices,9 which he first demonstrated to the press on 1 September 1928

I forgot TV in its infancy had commercial appeal in the New York during the late-'30s/early-'40s.
You’d’ve had to been pretty wealthy to own a TV pre-WWII, though, as well as in the right part of the country.
Hey wait a second....what about this
From Wiki
The first practical use of television was in Germany. Regular television broadcasts began in Germany in 1929 and in 1936 the Olympic Games in Berlin were broadcast to television stations in Berlin and Leipzig where the public could view the games live.
1936 is way earlier than 1939

One of the great ironies of history, that a minority spoiled Hitler’s “whites are better” Olympics by winning.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
What's ironic is that nobody here mentioned a sprinter named Sam Stoller
a Jew who was kept off the American Olympic team to make the Nazi’s happy.
Nazism was more about scapegoating the Jews or Communists for Germany’s ills than it was ever about this silly white power ideology that most people think it’s about now.
Logical descriptions of complex worlds contain within themselves the seeds of their own limitation. A world that was simple enough to be fully known would be too simple to contain conscious observers who might know it.

Germany itself also kept some great Jewish athletes off the team, including the favorite for the women’s high jump. There was a sad documentary about her two years ago during the IAAF world championships in Berlin. They used all kinds of tricks, incl. a disguised man to beat her in an important track meet to later be able to claim she just wasn’t the best.

They started with broadcasts from the IFA (consumer electronics show that still exists) to test out the technology
Then later added sports. But broadcasts were mainly to cinemas and public viewing shops initially since the sets were still prohibitively expensive for one person. Even in 1954 the huge majority of people still only had radio and very few had private TVs.
In Germany maybe
In the US, 1954, we had a TV in every single house in America….and 75% of the cars….just sayin’

If it should run an Intel Atom processor, than no I don’t think so either. Though I find myself using my DVD drive very rarely these days even on a 13 inch machine. Some movies, but no software and backup also on other media.
Honeslty the only time I use my DVD drive
Is when I run NBA2k10 since 2ksports still puts games on DVDs that must remain in while the game is being played for whatever reason.

LeBron called Rose shortly after the elimination and told him that he likes his game, his team and would like a chance to play together.
Begin speculation if he made the same call to all other top destinations now ;-)
I also liked Windhorst on Simmons’ podcast (after game 5) saying that he has collected all the dumb rumors the media in NY has made up about LeBron in the last year, and that he would publish those of LeBron re-signs in Cleveland or burn them if he doesn’t. But all in all he seemed pretty dejected already then, with his biggest hope pretty much that LeBron knows he would let the whole city and state down if he left. If he had won a title, it would have made things certainly easier for LeBron to leave.
If he doesn’t re-sign, I’m also thinking about a post why they didn’t win with him in 7 years and what we could learn from it.
I really think he either stays in CLE or more likely goes to Chicago
If as we discussed earlier, they can somehow add Bosh to the mix, that is a team that would have not just title contender but possible dynasty written all over it.
Even without Bosh, they’d still be pretty good.

That rumor was debunked, but it was a funny one. Like the Calipari + James package rumor, those somewhat credible ones are the best. We should continue to work on our rumors about players doing coke or really really wanting to play for Portland due to some weird affiliations.

I'm just about to start my work day
which should give me time to watch about 5 episodes if it’s the only thing I watch. I’m planning on watching it though. I’m uber tired right now, so if I’m having trouble focusing on what’s happening in the show, I’ll watch something mindless. On Monday’s I volunteer at a local elementary school in a Japanese immersion program from 8-11, which means I gotta get up around 7(which is nothing to you normal folks, but since my usual bed time is around 3-4AM, it’s a tough adjustment), and then deal with screaming kids for 3 hours. It’s fun and a good experience, but it’s tough.
"Bof teemz play hahd"

they learned katakana “ho” today and “bo” and “po” and then did worksheets with those katakana and the older ones they’ve learned, then they made caterpillars with construction paper, pipe cleaners and straws for handles because the teacher read them “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” in Japanese, which was fun to watch.

The worst part is
I’ve been doing it since January with the same school, same teacher, but around March they swapped their classes around and my first group of kids were super awesome, super sweet kids who actually listened to me, and definitely listened to the main teacher. These ones barely even pay attention to the teacher so it makes it a lot harder and much more stressful.
"Bof teemz play hahd"
Learning Japanese in elementary school sounds even more like very eager parents than Chinese kids learning English in kindergarten.
I think the anime and manga thing
is more to do with high school kids and college freshman taking it. This is a full immersion school where children learn it for all 5 (or 6) of their k-5 education. It’s more to do with business and international travel and Portland’s pretty big connections with Japan.
"Bof teemz play hahd"
I'd bet a good number of the parents are anime and manga fans

More Nic: He confirmed that he will play for the French national team, and that he talked to Roddy Beaubois about it
He also gave this little info:
You have again experienced pain during the playoffs?
I had surgery early. It had to happen so I did it. Then, from January to April, I had zero problems. I re-injured it in the playoffs and I did tests in Los Angeles in the aftermath. We just said ‘zero contact, zero ball’ for a month. Then I return to Portland for my shoulder muscles. And in August, I’ll be on the (L’Equpie De) France team. The decision is final.
…
How do you explain that it is so difficult for teams to recover their national players playing in the NBA?
There is a lot of money in this business. The leaders (owners) of the franchises are afraid to release their players, they get injured. But with the philosophy of Portland I was surprised, and pleasantly surprised. After that it depends a lot on players and teams, according to their contracts and leaders.
It is hard for a team that features culture to say, “no, you can’t return to your home countries during the NBA off season” to their players. Plus, the players are young, and could probably use the work, look at the difference in Batum from last year to this year. His confidence soared after the good showing o’er there.
At some point, hopefully next year, the Blazers will start cutting back, as the need for health will start to outweigh the need for experience.

Yeah I'm not sure what to think about him goin'

back during their epic few years of identity crisis when they were ATT, Cingular, then ATT CINGULAR, then ATT, then Cingular, then ATT again. I’m exaggerating a bit but it was terrible and the service was so bad the whole time, both phone service and customer service. I’ll never go back either.

loveisrespect
by portlandgiirl91 on May 17, 2010 4:15 PM PDT up reply actions
DSL is the internet connection itself
It’s how you get Internet in your house, plugged into a wall (or you can use a cable provider).
Wifi is a method of getting that Internet. So you plug a DSL Internet connection into a wifi device, so you can reach it from a laptop.
Makes sense?

Apples contract expires this year. Many are guessing that ATT offering very low data plans for the iPad was a little quid pro quo to get apple to stay exclusively with them. However there have been 4g plans created by apple, whether there is a phone almost completed we have no idea, but its not out the realm of possibility

The duration of the exclusive Apple-ATTM agreement was not "secret" either. market share is
what percentage of the people that own a certain product, own a certain brand
shoes for example.. lets say 100 people own shoes
60 own nike
20 own reebok
15 own adidas
5 own puma
nike has the largest market share. they have the most products out there..
hence when we say windows (PC) has a larger market share it means more owners of computers have windows than apple

Active player with the most games without appearing in the playoffs. I’m happy for him that he’ll go to the playoffs this year. He’s useful as a reserve OF. Too bad the Giants gave him 8 zillion at bats last year when he was one of the 5 worst hitters in the NL.
ooh, i’m really excited about thomas neal. the odds are high that the giants will screw with him, but there is a small chance that sabean and bochy will be gone by the time he’s ready for the pros
Velez is a bum, but hopefully Sanchez is up soon and he’ll be gone again. I don’t see him playing over Torres. I can tolerate a Velez spot start or two.

I took a speech class as part of my transfer requirements
and got a bit better from that class, but i still get really nervous leading up the event.
"Bof teemz play hahd"
I got lucky
the teacher I had was a super cute lady from Georgia with an adorable accent who was very very caring and helpful. After the first two weeks or so I felt really comfortable in front of the whole class.

"Bof teemz play hahd"
i'm talking about school as well
but i study music, so there is actual performance involved, in addition to oral reports, and exams, which written exams i don’t really get nervous about usually, and do okay with
yeah i don't mind written exams so much, anymore.
I still had a lot of trouble doing them in Japanese, but basic exams don’t hurt me too much. Are you saying it’s harder for you to perform for academia than with your music? or harder to perform music in school than in a show?
"Bof teemz play hahd"
the second one
because despite past success, it’s harder to let go of the fact that all your peers and professors are out there, whereas if you are at a concert, or background music, the expectations aren’t the same.
Yeah I can see that happening.
speaking a foreign language is very different, but I can sort of relate. Talking to close friends in Japanese isn’t a problem, saying it in front of all my classmates and teachers makes me far far more nervous. Again, not really the same thing, but I think I know what you mean.

i've heard (maybe here)
that actually people do it in libraries more than you expect, like if you ask something like 1 in 5 girls in a library, they’ll say yes or something
but seriously, I think test taking is just a skill some people have and others don’t. You can sort of get better at it by taking a lot of tests and studying really hard so you know the material cold, but even then it can be hard.
well i'm talking about actual performance too
which is why i like composition, i write for other performers, but this week, i’m performing one of my pieces for my peers, and am pretty nervous.
i sometimes get performance anxiety, when i step up to the plate, hoping for a home run, but more often than not just getting pinch hit for.
standing in the batters box was always stressful for me
mainly because as a lefty i got beaned a lot.
by HD on May 17, 2010 5:52 PM PDT up reply actions
hahaha. actually i preferred hitting left handed, simply because the overwhelming majority of pitchers are right handed, and their breaking pitches curve into you. against lefties i would get nervous because their breaking pitches start out like they are going to peg you, and then they drop over the plate. extremely nervewracking experience, staying back on a left handed curveball.
it's amazing what being on the other side of the plate did to pitchers
when i was little i would put up crazy walk numbers every season. One year i had a BA of about .125 and an OBS of .500 (i knew all my stats growing up because my mother kept score and made stat sheets for the team. It was always fun knowing someones stats better than they did so i could call them out on over hyping themselves)
by HD on May 17, 2010 5:59 PM PDT up reply actions
i can switch hit but never did it in a game
i remember i went to stoudemire baseball camp in hell yakima one summer as a kid, they put me at shortstop, a position i never played because i’m left handed, i fielded a ground ball, didn’t spin clockwise before throwing to 2nd base and got my ass chewed. Ever since then i’ve thought baseball coaches were pricks.
most of them kinda are jerks
i was told at a very young age that my only options were 1st, pitching, or outfield because of i was left handed
by HD on May 17, 2010 6:05 PM PDT up reply actions
yeah i played 1st base, and i liked it
but over years, bad coaches, like bad teachers, can ruin the fun for the kiddies.
well none of the infield positions, except 1b, really work for a left hander.
the throw from a 2nd baseman’s position is remarkably more difficult (and slower) for a lefty than a righty.
a left handed shortstop would have to backhand everything up the middle, instead of being able to carry his momentum through the fielding of the ball and the throw.
a left handed 3rd baseman would be killed on any short ground ball that he’d have to charge, because he’d have to field the ball and change leg position in order to make a strong throw. whereas a righty can pick up the ball and throw it to first in one motion
why would the southpaw catcher be at a disadvantage?
not that i would ever want to squat without biological purpose.
i get why its that way
it’s just frustrating knowing that you don’t have many options

ok I’m gonna post something here because if I put it in the Bayless thread, it’s an ad hom, but I think it’s totally justified. Some guy used Sergio’s stats from his Sacto stint, but didn’t average with his NY stint. When I called him on it, he said “the whole post was cherry picked stats.”
Here’s my response (in the JD so I don’t get banned):
Look, it’s one thing to cherry-pick stats that support your argument and have potential relevance, then argue why they should be deployed. I fail to see how you could make any argument that using stats from 1/2 the year (from a team that traded the guy) but not stats from the other half of the year. The fact that you did it without a disclaimer means you’re not cherry-picking, you’re blatantly obfuscating and misleading.
speaking of cherry picking the KP post is pretty good.

there's nothing he could have said in the brief time he looked at the ref which
doesn’t fall under the guideline of letting players react to calls.
“Zach you, ref” perhaps….but c’mon, he was walking away from the play and had a minor reaction especially if you compare it to how much bull guys like Sheed pull.

the truth?
you don’t know what he said either
We have
A) refs who were heavy on the whistle (see: what appel said about Kobe’s tech)
B) Grant Hill, one of the classiest guys in the league
C) Limited to non existent non verbal reaction to the call
I’m going to side with Hill and say the ref was way quick with that technical

Hedge over on Pau, hope Kobe misses more shots than he did tonight. He won’t hit those midrange shots at that rate all series.
Also need to improve their offense. That’s probly the realistic adjustment to make.
I don’t think all the offense in the world stops LA, considering Phoenix’s individual defenders. The ragtag Blazers hung some pretty good offensive games on them; who besides Hill is an above average defender?
#52
screw it, run:
nash, dragic, richardson, dudley, hill
run a 1-2-1-1-1 full court press and give LA 48 minutes of hell
you have to have players who can press to press. Also, the Lakers would have an o-eff of about 200 with any of those guys guarding Hill.
A press with those defenders would be funny to watch.
#52
I think the only way they beat LA is if they somehow get unreasonably hot from three for a few games. LA will be unfocused, so they’ll drop two games maybe, but they’ll win the series if Phoenix can’t make and take a whole lotta threes.

well it depends on the layout of the library. example: some rolling archives you can actually get into if you go to the empty space and crawl into them. the problem w/ this is that if anyone tries to open the archives they’ll hit you. basically it has to be done near closing time, in a secure location. you can also, sometimes hide out until they close the library, but then there is a security breach as you exit through an emergency exit…. so as long as security isn’t around…

I actually am in favor of trading Miller. His value is higher than it’s ever been this past season. He’s not getting younger and I do think his shooting hurt us sometimes.
He’s still a baller and one of my favorites, just maybe not the best fit for this team.

I don’t really understand why his value would be any higher than when we acquired him and nobody wanted to pay more than the MLE for him.
Lopez looks sprightly. Hopefully he can get more like 30 mpg from here on out—they need him to rebound and d up Gasol.

charles bronson rides off into the sunset, but with a dead guy strapped to a horse vs the girl? definitely not the norm hahaha.
but it definitely is symbolism for the ‘end of the old west’, as the outlaw and the lone wanderer are forced to move on.
with the train rolling through the frame in the opposite way the old gunslingers are traveling. old west guys (a la Ethan Edwards) don’t get the girl. they’re supposed to be alone cause they can’t be civilized. so not too odd that Bronson doesn’t get the girl.

i haven’t seen too many westerns where the hero rides off with a dead body on his horse vs the girl…
i haven’t seen many modern westerns where he rides off with the girl. closest i can think of is Open Range. and even then he’s leaving Annette Bening at the homestead while he goes off with the livestock.

they are conventions of a genre. how else should i look at them? you make great movies one of two ways as far as i can see:
1 follow the conventions of the genre (think A Prophet, which is pure genre flick and executed perfectly)
2 follow the conventions so well that you can subvert them. (think QT movies, like Inglorious Basterds)

i was just saying it’s not normal in a western for the main character to ride off with a dead body strapped to his horse! more usually, it’s the female lead
and i’m saying i don’t recall a modern western where the hero rides off with the female lead.

is that a modern western?
most people claim The Searchers as the first modern western (i think Shane is in that conversation as well) and the character of Ethan Edwards as the birth of the western anti-hero. him being alone at the end of the film, shut out from society and civilization is where they got that convention for the modern western of’ the hero being alone.
i did think of another example though, if i’m remembering correctly, and that would be Outlaw Josey Wales, where they form a little society of their own.

yeah. i kept having to correct myself as i was typing. cause all the early westerns i think you are correct: the hero got the girl. i haven’t seen many of those early ones. interesting that not many of them (were there any?) on that top 25 list.
it is interesting that at the end of OUTW Jill is left as the overseer of all the men. perhaps Leone’s way of ending that particular convention as well (ie men being left alone), while still having his hero ride off with the dead remnant of the old days….

kobe just referencing the most valuable puppets, so simple, but i have to say, it promotes nike and digs at lebron at the sametime, which is a pretty good deal for kobe, that bastard.
The Suns won the biggest loser category of them all: non-paint twos 32pts to 28pts. I’m going to keep track of this and see how well winning this category correlates to losing games.
watching that double and triple OT boston-phoenix game 5 from '76 that AK posted today
long twos were the bread and butter, it was pretty cool; they were tired and in foul trouble so the teams were just trading buckets and sinking tough shot after tough shot, pretty sveet.
long twos are such a stupid shot. Per Hoopdata, the bottom teams in the league in 16-23 footers attempted are:
ORL
HOU
BOS
CHAR
LAL
CLE
PHO
That’s the five best teams in the league along with two of the smartest staffs (Larry Brown + Adelman/Morey). The Blazers are #5 in the league. We’re making our offense too darn hard.
it was kinda funny in simmons podcast today
while talking to jj reddick he asked if they had 3 pt lines when he was in high school and jj laughed and said “in 2000? ya they did” it made simmons seem really old.
btw while i’m talking about simmons what was up with talking to the czar and not talking about fresh meat? that is the only reason i still listen to the podcasts and they haven’t talked about it since the opening episode. poo

well, Andre usually only shoots those when forced to
and I don’t recall Roy shooting many 20 footers, he tends to shoot closer to the foul line after getting himself open.

i get your point though
roy is heady, is always probing and if he can get 15 instead of 20 he will, or if he get’s in a little further, instead of driving all the way and risk drawing a charge, he’s got that floater that’s like an alternate version of his jumper. i miss roy.
the big difference being
Roy shoots more at the small end (16 feet) of that range and after getting himself open off a good move

Brandon’s allowed to shoot them. They are similar shots to what Jerryd takes, Brandon’s just a lot more accurate.
#52
It’s different when it’s your star and he’s forcing his defenders to respect the mid-range game so the driving lanes will open up. The other guys are the concern.
Brandon’s offensive game is really complete. The only thing that he doesn’t do well at this point is leading the bigs inside, probably.
#52
I wouldn't mind a little better fast break ability
But I think the concerns about his inability to run the break are a bit overblown.
I'm not sure how to check his season stats for the first x games of the year
So we may have to wait until the fall.
It may have also been that he had good three point shooting during his crazy great stretch.
I calculated his percentage before Jan. 13, and its 34.8%. That’s slightly better than his season average of 33%, but still a drop off from the 37.7% of last season.
Yes, shooting 37.7% this season would’ve given him only 10 more threes. Still, if he shot 34.8% during his hot streak, and 28.2% the second half of the season, working on the three pointer wouldn’t hurt. Even though bottom line, I consider most of this season a fluke for stats.
that’s why I’m saying if during the Dec-Jan stretch when he was hot in general and scoring 23+/game, he only shot 34.8% from three, I’d like to see improvement.
a healthy Oden and Roy, a smarter Bayless
consistent 3s from Rudy will all help.
I think Aldridge should work on his range too. Might as well turn a few of those 22 footers into 3s

-Dave

we should never run a play for a long 2 though. The reason Bosh and Amar’e shoot those is because they are also a driving threat, so the shot sets up their drive. LaMarcus can’t do this.

he's got a great post up game
i think he’s really talented. Sometimes i think he should just play center because he can usually outrun other centers, and has pretty quick footwork in the post, and if the other C is small, he CAN overpower them.
Actually, Aldridge is pretty terrible at center
we don’t want to play small ball with him at center.
He’s got an okay post up game. He only uses one move consistently (the running hook). He’s shown he has other moves, but he rarely breaks them out. He needs to get a left hand hook and a spin move.
He also needs to learn how to take 1-2 dribbles (perhaps after a pump fake) and get to the rim with his length.
He also needs to work on passing out of the double team and not waiting to be double teamed (make the defense react to you not the other way around).
And a 35% 3 point shot (absolute max. 3 att. per game) would be fantastic.
"In fact you might say that Ugly is the Blazers' secret weapon this year."
-Dave
As for the Blazers...They are officially the NBA equivalent of a movie serial killer

I can give him a tip right now
just because you’re tall doesn’t mean you have to dribble the ball 5 feet in the air.
I think his mother forced him to have perfect posture so he can’t get low to the floor to limit exposure to his dribble.
"In fact you might say that Ugly is the Blazers' secret weapon this year."
-Dave
As for the Blazers...They are officially the NBA equivalent of a movie serial killer
-basketbawful
LaMarcus used to have better handles as a rookie/sophomore. I think he spent too much time lifting weights over the last two summers and not enough working on ball handing skills.
what I meant was
all those things help the team avoid shooting long 2s. Oden is in the post. Roy gets to the rim. Rudy hits 3s.
"In fact you might say that Ugly is the Blazers' secret weapon this year."
-Dave
As for the Blazers...They are officially the NBA equivalent of a movie serial killer

it’s not even the “offense” so much. We could keep all Nate’s principles and have guys spot up at the three point line instead.
the offense is intrinsically set up to create jump shots. We could definitely alter the pick and pop type plays to go for three instead of the long two.
But, there’s somewhat of a problem with an offense that yields jump shots.
#52
sure
although we’ve gone from 10th in the league in at-rim attempts to 28th, which goes to show that Brandon and Greg have a lot to do with it.
it changes based on healthy personnel
Oden getting put backs and dunks replaces less efficient shots
Roy at 100% doesn’t have to settle for jumpers and can attack better.
Rudy making his 3s means we don’t have to use the pick and pop as much.
Easy offense from other sources replaces some of the ugly shots.

the system definitely sucks
I’m just saying we get fewer long 2s when our guys are playing better. It applies to any team really, but moreso to us because of the system.

Hey Mike Woodson has won more games every year he's been here
So there’s nothing to complain about.
Wait a minute.
Do you think it’s a problem per se to shoot a lot of jumpers? It just seems like you should either be a three point shooting team or a get to the rim team. Both styles are represented in the last four. And Orlando’s show it’s a sustainable strategy, making the finals over CLE and BOS last year and making the ECF this year.

Yeah it wasn’t until my Junior year in my undergrad(I’m currently a fifth year senior, such is the outcome of working fulltime while trying to go to school and being forced to go parttime) that I got really good a balancing. Part of it also probably came from trending towards classes where I knew I’d have to read less.

Well you wanna read girl with the dragon tattoo first
cause it’s the first in a trilogy. You could skip it, but that one really gets you to know the characters. I really like them both, they’re long though(I only mention this cause you said you’re not really into reading). They’re also very very dark and a bit disturbing. Probably especially for women (there is a lot of horrible sexual abuse). But, overall, I would certainly recommend it.

Yeah, I’m a bit out of luck. Basketball-reference has missed games of course, but doesn’t seem to distinguish why. CBSSports has up to date info, but not aggregates. Another source I have has dates, but it’s hard to calculate how many games that cost in some instances. For one season I could add it all up, but I wanted to look at something more historic.
did you get the game though?

Splitter has won the MVP title for the 2009-10 season in Spain. A worthy finish to his ACB career ;-)
Could be. I have yet to see Splitter play against NBA talent to really know. He’s probably not the same kind of shot blocker as Lopez, but he plays inside and hustles. He’s not your typical Euro big who really plays out at the perimeter like Okur or Dirk or Bargnani. Or LaMarcus. He never shoots threes. He stays inside, grabs offensive boards, and puts them in. I’m not sure I would say he is very skilled, but he has a few go-to moves. And was as efficient as Scola when Scola left Spain (and he’s younger, and 6-11 to 7-0). Some mix of Lopez, Scola, Joel P, Horford, … But it’s impossible to know until he plays NBA players day in and day out.
either Splitter is real real good or they’re underrating Snow.

I always enjoy when they make fun of Matt.
Especially stuff about Evergreen State College. I wish they had clips for it online.

Evergreen Terrace is the name of the road where the Simpsons live, right?
So if the Nets win the lottery tonight, would you rather offer the “current Blazers starting point guard” (copyright TiH) or a package of Rudy/Bayless and Joel for Devin Harris? Would probably have to include Martell and picks/stashed Euro and cash too.
Alternatively, would the Nets offer the #1 pick to the Cavs to entice them to a S&T for LeBron?
what do you think they want to help fill out their roster?
They get Wall and a big name FA to go with Lopez
Do they just want a handful of cheap bench guys so they can go after a 2nd FA?
Do they want a starter because they are giving up Harris?

Maybe.
That’s still a fantastic roster with Lebron, especially if they can get another player like Bosh, Lee or anyone more useful than Yi. Even Haywood would be pretty neat.
by Nick Van Excellent on May 18, 2010 8:05 AM PDT up reply actions
Another maximum-level guy like Chris Bosh -- or at worst David Lee -- would be necessary for ...
LeBron James to join New Jersey. Dumping Yi Jianlian would be a boon, too, such as to the Golden State Warriors for oft-injured Brandan Wright.
I'm still hopeful that Wright becomes a decent rotation player.
David Lee would probably look better playing next to Harris, Lopez and Lebron. He’s a bad defender, but everyone else in that rotation would be good, so I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Plus a decent coach could make the team defense work, especially since stretch 4’s are in vogue.
by Nick Van Excellent on May 18, 2010 9:09 AM PDT up reply actions
i would think a package of
dre, rudy, euro and cash could get harris. He would lose a some value in the trade market with them having wall, and dre could be a nice stop gap until wall can really dominate. The problem seems to be they have a sg(terrance williams) and (in this scenario) 2 pgs so maybe that makes my deal impossible because of lack of interest. I would bet they would push for batum and maybe settle for marty, rudy, euro( most likely freeland) and cash.

I'm in the process of throwing out all old batteries in my house and replacing them with Sanyo Eneloops
Really nice advancement in battery technology (very low self-discharge, so you can let them sit around), and at about the same price as standard rechargeable batteries. I’ve already upgraded my keyboard, mouse, TV remotes, XBox controller, … Only in things like clocks the old ones will survive a while longer. Had some disappointing performance of other batteries recently, and one that corroded, so now I make the jump.
I'm doing a crazy, elaborate off season hypothetical that I'll post in the trade drawer sometime tomorrow
where we acquire Harris and Bosh while shipping out half the roster.
How do people feel about this lineup
Devin Harris
Roy
Batum
Bosh
Oden
with the main subs being
Mike Miller

I'm having trouble throwing the current Blazers starting point guard under the bus in Dave's Camby thread
I’ll come up with something.
You could go with the dramatic decrease in production that Camby had as a Blazer vs as a Clipper
7.7ppg, 12.1rpg, 3.0apg, 1.3 TOs, and 2.1 PFs >>>>Clipper
7.0ppg, 11.1rpg, 1.5apg, 1.2 TOs, and 2.4 PFs >>>>Blazer
That doesn’t happen by accident
