Tonigh's game is a perfect example why the Blazers should re-sign Blake

If Pritch stays, I think it's likely Blake is re-signed.

I don't see many opporturities for starting positions around the league for Blake. Miami and Indiana are teams that may be looking for a starter. Miami has been rumored to have wanted Blake for years. Blake is a native of Miami. But most of the other teams seem to be set at point guard.

With Blake's love for the Portland area and few starting options available, the Blazers may be able to get him at very reasonable price. And since Miller has cemented the starter role, there won't be the same '' who should start?'' issues that the team dealt with this season. Hopefully Bayless will continue to develop, but the team needs 3 point guards, so why not Blake regardless of whether he's second or third string?

we gotta go trade for someone

this is where you put all that vaunted depth to use. target a guy and go get him, even if you have to overpay. Harris, Collison, Conley are potential targets, but there are certainly others. Bayless, Rudy, Martell, Pendergraph, Eurostash, and draft picks should all be on the table. Tell some team to take their pick from that lot, and be ready to throw in cash.

Stockpiling backup 2s and 3s is a waste of assets. Their value can only degrade, and they are the most replaceable players in the league. We have 3 of them stashed on our bench.

Agreed

I like the idea of Blake as a backup PG, but Nate would overplay him like he has shown for the past 3 years. And there’s no way I’d use the full MLE on Steve. The BAE would be OK, but he’ll likely get a better offer

Bayless, Rudy, Martell, Pendergraph, Eurostash, and draft picks should all be on the table

Again, I agree. But Paul Allen likes Rudy and has already refused at least one deal involving Fernandez. Will Paul change his mind? Until that happens I think we have to take Rudy off the table. Based on how Sergio and Rudy have worked out, I’d deal Claver’s rights without hesitation, and Freeland is not worth the MLE so I’d move him, if there’s any interest.

Stockpiling backup 2s and 3s is a waste of assets. Their value can only degrade, and they are the most replaceable players in the league.

Agreed x 3. Portland needs “another Batum” but instead of a SF it needs to be someone who can really defend the 1 and 2 who has long arms, big hands and who can knock down an open shot and not turn the ball over. I have no idea who that player is, but it’s not Devin Harris and Collison/Conley are too small.

Actually a player as you describe might well be available in the draft this year

Rodrigue Beaubois was the 25th pick last year, George Hill was the 26th pick in 2008, Arron Afflalo was the 27th pick in 2007.

could be

but KP’s commenta about the team needing a player “in their sweet spot” argues for adding someone who’s between the ages of 28-32 and who has NBA playoff experience. I’d be looking for a player on a rebuilding team who is a model citizen but needs a fresh start. (Maybe the rebuilding team has a young player who they want to play more minutes at the expense of this “slightly older” player?)

A perfect example was Andre Miller in Philly, heading into last offseason. Their loss was Portland’s gain

Agree
Based on how Sergio and Rudy have worked out, I’d deal Claver’s rights without hesitation

It’s not that I dislike Rudy, that’s the opposite of the truth, and although sergio was my scapegoat while on the floor, I liked him as well. There were few more exciting players last year than the incescent lobs by the spanish armada (with the exception of Roy’s 3 FTW against Houston). However, unless Nate is not our coach, or unless we can put together that running second unit that Nate spoke of early in the season, I don’t think the european run and gun style of play fits on Portland’s squad.

by dirtboydave on Apr 8, 2010 9:12 PM PDT up reply actions

KP had this to say about Nate, during his interview with BT Smith
I think the thing that makes Nate special is, he has an amazing foundation. What he’s about, he doesn’t get out of that. That’s what he’s about; I don’t care what you say, that’s what we’re going to do. He’s unflappable that way. And, again, him and I would tell you, we don’t agree, and I love that.

Sergio, strike one
Rudy, strike two

I’m getting the feeling that the (alleged) disconnect between the scouting department and the coaching staff re: what style of play the team should be built around has been decided out on the floor. Was there really ever any doubt? The “Brandon Roy pace” won, and the “Sergio/Rudy free-flowing uptempo 2nd unit” may have looked good on paper, but it didn’t really pan out

Which is a good thing, to me. Because slow and steady (with an emphasis on defensive stops and rebounding) is what wins playoff series.

Patty Mills, strike three

I would take him tho

under the condition that he would not be the third best guard. I just hate to have him in the game for clutch situations… Between the playoffs last year and the three guard lineup this year i can’t handle any more andre – blake – roy -aldridge – y lineups. It just feels like Nate is forced to go with that combo since rudy/bayless/webster/batum all seem to be outperformed by Blake. Will one of those 4 solidify themselves as the second wing?
Batum makes and breaks his case for that spot every other game.
Rudy/Bayless/Webster could POTENTIALLY take that job.
I am pro Blake if 1 of those 4 steps up in the playoffs and hits big shots or another free agent is brought in.
Tonight Blake showed what he is good at, running the second unit, hitting outside shots and providing energy and hustle off the bench. As well as what he is not good at, closing games. If he is limited to the ladder I am all for him.

Why not?

Why not?

Because Steve Blake is not a good basketball player. Because we have assets to get a much better backup point guard. Because Nate would overplay him at the expense of this team. Because he can’t defend. Because he doesn’t generate true offense, he just makes basic entry passes. Because he’s older than our future point guard should be. Because he’s a detriment to improvement.

Liking Portland is not a good reason to have a player on this team. Being cheap is not a good reason to have him here.

2nd Team Guard

Re-signing Blake would give us a competent #2 PG for now, but like some have noted, it will not resolve the future. Miller will give us several years, but after that, we’ll need either Bayless to step up or another Miller. Right now, I don’t see anyone available that we can likely get. Teams do not generally take second team players for proven starters. We can talk about packaging Fernandez, Bayless, Martell etc., but I doubt that any of them would get us a proven PG. Fernandez and Martell have shown streaks – but lately, their production is down. It’s a tough spot to fill. Harris is a maybe, but will be expensive, and Felton will be available but I’m not sure that if you give Bayless another two years, that he won’t be almost as good as Felton is today – and a lot less expensive. Other than that, who is actually available? And keep in mind that Blake has always been inconsistent from game to game. He’s steady in terms of ball handling, but you cannot use last night’s game to project his over-all productivity, any more than you could use his previous games to do so. Last night was his highest scoring game, after all, since joining the Clippers. Using it as your benchmark would be a little like using Bayless’s 31 point game as his – and neither would be accurate.

Bayless is still very young for a point guard

Especially a PG learning to play the right way. He likely is not a natural point guard. Terry Porter was also not a point guard and he turned out pretty well for the Blazers. The hype was never from the coach. It was from the fans and media. The coach and GM have apparently decided that he is worthy of the investment for the future. His biggest asset is also a limiting factor: the intense desire to improve. It is what will drive him to become a really good to great player. It also means he thinks too much now as he develops.

I see Bayless as also one of only three players on the Blazers who are playmakers. Rudy is working to become a fourth. It is inconsistent now but it has won some games for us this year.

Agreed

Watching Blake last night, I remembered why I liked him so much. He’s a terrific back-up point guard. And I’ve seen him hit shots down the stretch before as well, despite what others are saying. My only worry is that after being traded by Portland twice, is he going to be very willing to sign with them a third time?

But I’ll take him over Bayless any day of the week and twice on Sunday—with each game, Bayless looks worse and worse to me. As someone else said, he is just not a point guard, plain and simple. I’m tired of feeling nervous every time he steps on the floor, I’m tired of his turnovers, I’m tired of his refusal to distribute the ball, and I’m tired of all the vacuous hype surrounding him. The guy had two great games, he got some attention, and he got scouted into non-factor-dom. End of story.

Did you see Quick’s blog entry about how Steve and Paul Allen shook hands and exchanged jokes before the game? I think Blake would be fine about another return to PDX, if the money was right. (Moving your family sucks, as we all know)

But I’ll take him over Bayless any day of the week and twice on Sunday—with each game, Bayless looks worse and worse to me

I certainly have felt the same sense of unease since the trade, whenever Jerryd or Rudy are on the floor without Roy/Miller. But in Bayless’ defense, I have noticed that during the last 2 games that he has penetrated and found LMA for lay-ins, so that’s progress in Rex’ development of court vision. Like I’ve said many times, Jerryd came along late in the Blazer’s process of building a championship roster, and he’s had less opportunities to make mistakes and learn from them, as compared to Jack and Sergio. (Life isn’t fair, sometimes) The Blazer “train” is moving at high speed now, and Bayless is still a very inexperienced conductor. He may “catch up” eventually, but can the team afford the growing pains along the way? There’s the rub.

I see your point

but I just don’t see the talent there with Bayless. Believe me, I was excited about him when he had those two games, but I just don’t see that “it.” While Blake doesn’t have it either, he is at least a solid role-player, who I think gets unfairly hated on for the whole team’s skittishness in the playoff’s last year, who provides a good foundation for the team. I hope you are right about Steve’s feelings towards the team, and that the Blazers will try to get him back and that he’ll be into it. For now, I think he’s our best bet, pros and cons considered.

I said I'd reserve judgment until after the playoffs

but now so many Bedgers are seeing the reality that I presented after the Camby trade…the Blazers don’t really have a reliable PG that can keep the team “together” and executing well when Roy/Miller aren’t on the court. I would hope that the Blazers can find a better “3rd guard” option than Blake, Rudy or Bayless during the offseason. But I’m not certain if that will even be the team’s #1 goal of the offseason, after resigning Camby.

Another unknown is Travis Diener

As he practices with the team more now and learns the offense he might be able to contribute in moments. He is a great scorer and a solid game manager from reports of previous teams.

But Bayless is likely better than anyone we could find to want a backup role here.

Yeah, I think you're in the minority, stavrogin.

“Talent” is the one thing almost everyone sees in Bayless. He has absolutely elite athleticism and has been a strong jump shooter in the past (rebuilding his stroke for the NBA has been a setback, but many still think he’ll overcome that. Me? I dunno.).

He isn’t a natural “true” PG, though. The question is whether or not that matters, since our SG handles the ball a lot and has the skills normally associated with a PG. Two very different combo guards in the backcourt? It’s been done successfully before…

I dunno...

I imagine he is somewhat bitter Portland has traded him twice now. I think the bridge has been burnt and I am not so sure he would come back any more. I am kind of surprised no one has brought up the Lakers as a good fit. He would be great alongside Kobe and an upgrade over Fish. Although at the end of the day I imagine he goes to the highest bidder. You only get so many years in the NBA and you got to get set for the future.

If steve was so bitter why would he joke around with Paul Allen on the floor before the game? I think you’re projecting what isn’t there. Blake knows the NBA is a business, and if the Blazers matched the best FA offer he receives this July, I wouldn’t be surprised if he resigned with Portland

Haters gotta hate

but Blake would be a fine backup PG, with the added benefit that he already knows the system and is already proven in it.

Ideally we’d have a younger up and coming backup who is not only projected to start someday, but also ready to take over now if needed. I want that to be Bayless, but he hasn’t proven that yet. Plan A is to find a player that fits the description, probably through trade. Guys already mentioned like Darren Collison. Who else might be available?

Plan B though should be to find an inexpensive vet who is ready, and Blake is fully ready. If plan A fails, do we want to go forward relying on Bayless as the primary backup? It’s a tough call, because Bayless does show promise, but isn’t quite there yet. But if the team does want a vet there, what other sub-MLE vets are available that are better than Blake?

Who else might be available?

Goran Dragic. He’s currently part of a three PG “rotation” in Phoenix with Nash and Barbosa and he’s got a similar salary to Rudy (1.9 mil versus 1.2 mil) Offering Fernandez+Pendergraph might be enough. Or perhaps the Suns would prefer one of the Euros that Portland has stashed overseas?

Dragic is 6’4 and could conceivably play alongside either Roy or Miller. Downside? Goran may not be “risk-averse enough” for Nate and Demo (his career A/TO ratio is less than 2:1)

Agreed,

for what he is, Blake is a good deal for right now, until either 1) Bayless develops into a consistent option and not a liability, or 2) someone else comes along. Blake’s far from perfect, as is constantly pointed out, but he’s a generally safe, solid bet for now. Sure, he had a rough year, but I think a lot of that had to do with all the issues with fitting Miller into the team. It seemed like all the guards—Miller, Blake, Roy, Rudy, Bayless—have been a little off-balance at times this year to differing degrees, and unsure of what their role is. MacMillan was a little slow to settle on a line-up. These days, Miller is established as the starter and is clearly deserving of that role, so Blake will know what he’s here to do and will still get plenty of playing time.
