It felt like we were discussing basketball with a distinguished gentleman with Pheonix Stan
Perhaps with a bit of greying at his temples, ala Reed Richards.
But this Seth dude… his hair is all greasy, his keyboard stained orange from cheeto fingers, and he keeps posting requests for someone to get him a fake ID so he can go to a bar that weekend. Not cool.

and win it in 6. Letting Portland hang around is a bad idea. The Blazers are like zombies that won’t die. You never want to get down to your last shotgun shell against a bunch of zombies.

Given the game 5 debacle, do you still feel game 6 was a “grow up moment,” or rather just a really cool win, especially with the emotional lift provided by Roy?
Game 4 you mean?
Yes…it was a grow up moment. They SO could have lost that game. Just because they don’t have the health and depth to win the series (provided they don’t win the series) doesn’t mean the Blazers didn’t make strides in finding out what the playoffs are about.
OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

No, I guess not. Just seems to me that if they’d really grown up, they wouldn’t have suffered another complete beatdown in the next game. I dunno.
They're grown up
but limping. To me it’s a like a guy with no legs climbing a mountain. He’s probably not going to make it this time. He’ll have a great stretch and then slip down. But he’s achieving something just being there. This team got its first road win, its first Game 1 win, its first completely under-manned save-from-disaster win…and it’s doing all of this on nothing but guts. Take those same guts and that same preparation, add in Portland’s normal talent, and I believe you have something. I would not have said the same had they gone down in 5 after winning Game 1 though.
by Dave on Apr 28, 2010 10:17 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
It will be seen as a major "grow up moment" AND a cool step to the Game 7 win...
I thought you meant it that way and I liked it better.
The game 6 gutty win will still be special, even after the fantabulous Game 7 win. [what/ that’s a word in spellcheck?]
Weren’t you looking into the future? I see a healed Roy playing ball.

Dave in your opinion is Nate Mcmillian the right coach to get the Blazers to the next level?
On game day, I leave the turkey alone because it is some chemicals in that thing. Nate Mcmillian 11/26/09
I think he can
There might be other people who could too. I think that next level success will depend more on health and commitment than coaching.
I don't have enough knowledge
to make an assessment. Maybe it’s bad training. Maybe it’s freaky luck. I wouldn’t feel qualified to make that call.
Thanks
My shoulders get tense every time I see one of those “fire the training staff” comments, mostly because we don’t have a clue about what’s REALLY going on.
i don’t think i’ve been in the same position for more than 12 months…either the company hates me or i hated my position enough to move horizontal or vertically.
fiftytwo
It seems like a good idea to rotate highly trained and specialized doctors and trainers every few weeks
One is as good as another. JUST NEEDS A FRESH PAIR OF EYES.
I don’t think all things are the same. Maybe we do need a fresh pair of eyes on the medical front, but none of us could possibly know… except maybe Lets Blaze.
#52
LetsBlaze said so himself.
i’m pretty sure they can get the best doctors on the phone for an opinion but it’s always good to have fresh eyes, routines, programs, etc
I’m just surprised that PA hasn’t bought us the best training staff. We didn’t see any awards at the PF for the training staff during our tour but we did see a ton of corporate awards for KP
fiftytwo
I'm not buying the "one is a s good as another" line
Time and experience is a big deal in a lot of professions. Fresh eyes are always a good idea, but tossing out experience just on principle doesn’t make much sense to me.
Research my past comments on this matter!
I don’t think removing guys with TONS of experience and knowledge helps anything.
Get other voices in, learn new crap— of course. But changing it out because it is done in other fields is silly to me.
#52
i didn’t say change the whole team.
so here is a true story: we tour the Practice Facility and Bobby Medina is showing us a dvd on what they do.
They guy next to us who was on the same tour for the last 3 years, said he’s shown the SAME DVD each time but with different players.
i was like, WUT?
SMH!!!!
fiftytwo
What, they gotta make and write and change a new DVD to show people getting a tour?
Why would they care about that?
#52
"Why would they care about that?"
Ding. Ding. Ding.
Stuff produced and presented and dumbed down to fans ain’t what’s really happenin’, bro. Don’t take it too seriously.
well, they care enough to update the players in the DVD and about everything else.
they don’t just show these to fans, they talk about it to their community.
it’s a highly polished piece of work. a lot of production value it seems.
didn’t seem very low budget for a silly tour. it’s stuff you see them take to that Nerd Conference Ben went to
fiftytwo
let me clarify…the content of the DVD which was about 60 minutes long, showed their workouts/practice, regimen, what they look at etc….the guy next to me basically reeled off exactly the contents in it.
so the content wasn’t fresh…well, you know what i mean. it’s just a bad sign
fiftytwo
I think they update the players to make it not look old
And to judge them based upon it seems silly… they really ain’t gonna put a lot of hard work into it. It’s just a puff piece for visitors.
#52
(not that I saw it of course)
But a video like that can’t be a good way to judge how effective they are at their jobs. That can only be judged by people who know that junk.
#52
i can judge them!
thats what i do!
but seriously, they were in to this video. it had the menu, it had the whole deal. i’m pretty sure it wasn’t just for a once a year tour deal
fiftytwo
They might show it and use it for several things
But it’s still just a video they made to be a puff piece.
Ya can’t judge their methods based on it.
#52
Even if they were, indeed, not the best at their job
It’s still just a video made for fans to see.
#52
The question I would rather ask is: Why did management and coaching staff change over and over again, but training staff did not? And do you think that is an advantage compared to other teams, or rather a disadvantage.
so they all do nothing and eat junk food during the summer?

I have a couple thoughts
but if I spill them now, what do we talk about after the WCF are done? Even playing until then the off-season is long.
How 'bout those refs?
LOL – no, no, I’m not going there, just amazed at all the talk this year, including DHoward getting fined. Been an NBA fan for many years, there have always been ref issues, I just think with all the instant playback, recording devices, the Internet, etc. that we have now that reviewing and analyzing has become a new art form, and a thorn for professional leagues. Hence all the instant replay now allowed by refs in major sports.
Brandon Roy, 'nuff said.
Dave:
Is the NBA ever going to pass and enforce a rule keeping the Alvin Gentrys of the league from complaining about every call? I know the refs can give techs, but there is nothing more annoying than seeing a coach yelling at the refs after EVERY SINGLE PLAY.
Probably why I’m such a Nate fan, but I digress.

When the Blazers are on the runway to take off for a championship run I hope the refs remember who’s been not yelling at them all these years.

How concerned are you, long term, about the poor play of LA (other than his outstanding game 4 of course) and the beyond terrible play of Rudy?
Not much about LA
He’ll look better with the normal guys around him. I’ve been willing to trade Bayless or Rudy all year for the right price. My concern is that his value may have gone down because of this. But really I’m OK keeping or moving either. They’re still young and have time to develop.
You?
Rudy
Is he gone this summer or is he gone?
They'd be selling very low on Rudy when he's had a tough year
He comes back in the fall on a rookie scale contract. If he doesn’t do well, oh well. If he does do well, they can trade him… or more likely, everyone will suddenly remember what he’s like when healthy, and will want to keep him again.
w0rd
Unless someone wants him bad right now for some reason, it is the worst possible time to trade him ever.
Wait and see if he can become Rudy again… a bad sophomore year or a year where a player was just hurt and depressed and useless and then recovers isn’t that rare.
#52
Yup.
I’d give him a benefit of doubt. I am also big on selling high, so unless we can get decent value for him, it’s probably better to give him another year.

Even if you feel that way, it's still better to sell high if possible.
No need to dump him after a tough luck year and watch him explode elsewhere next year. Let him blow up here instead, and if he does, combine him with Joel’s contract for a missing piece.
Or we just ride him until all value is lost
ala Sergio and all we can do is put him together with 3 million in cash so somebody will take him off of our hands. At least now you might get somebody thinking that there’s something there untapped.
by nikolokolus on Apr 28, 2010 10:25 PM PDT up reply actions
All value is already lost at this point
There’s no reason to believe he’s taking the same career path as Sergio. Sergio didn’t have an off year with multiple injuries.
Sergio wasn't very good for, now, multiple teams and coaches
(well, 3).
Rudy was pretty good his rookie year, and bad in a year where he was constantly hurt and apparently lost his flow and confidence— which can be easily explained by the injuries. Even if it is all mental, it is still just one season that followed a good season.
#52
Really?
Sergio posted a PER or 14+ and despite his poor shooting mechanics and struggles on defense, it sure seemed like a lot of people were pretty jazzed about Chacho.
by nikolokolus on Apr 28, 2010 10:32 PM PDT up reply actions
Sure, a lot of people like Sergio
I think Sergio is and was mostly fools gold. A ball dominating PG who got assists and didn’t do a lot else. His PER was good this year.
But he doesn’t really help a team that much… he isn’t good at playing unless he is dominating the ball all possession.
#52
And if ya wait
It ain’t like his value will get lower.
He is super duper cheap, and was pretty good just last season. He ain’t at an age where he should get worse. Just ain’t no reason to sell him now, unless he was a team cancer.
#52
Exactly
But, the funny thing is he’s do a lot better with the Knicks or even, cough, the Suns … which is ironic because of who we’re playing in the playoffs and they bought his draft rights from the Suns. I watched the Eurobasket over the summer and he was a rock star with that team … I’m not saying Nate is a bad coach but just not the right coach for Rudy. Although, I’m sure the injuries not only to himself but the rest of the team, Nate having to adjust the rotations have had a lot to do with it too. I so remember when Miller was signed thinking he and Rudy were going to be doing a lot of alley-oops and that’s just never happened. I was just surprised that Nate hasn’t integrated a lot of what Rudy could already do and tried to add to that … just seems like more of a lost year for him alhough I wouldn’t argue he does need to try a bit harder.

He said to AS he would stay
On the other hand, Real, Barcelona and Caja Laboral said they would take him. Of course they would.
But we already picked up his option for 2010-11, and have another option for 2011-12. Unless Allen suddenly goes into money saving mode and agrees to a buyout, Rudy has at least one more year in the NBA. Or Rudy flees and gets suspended for a year ;)
Add 20 pounds of muscle and he might survive.
He has literally been beaten up the last two years and he needs a tougher body to take the hits. He needs to go to bodybuilding summer camp, not run a kids basketball clinic.
Better get to work or he will be gone. And I really like RUDY!!!

if greg was healthy and the blazers still picked up the cambyman because they felt a need to add more upper lip hair, where would you rank the blazers in the west this postseason?
Above Phoenix
They could probably handle Dallas too. L.A. is still a problem. If you assume a healthy Blazers squad you’d have to assume a healthy Denver group too. They’d still be a problem.

hurt locker was a fine film, but it got hyped up too much. Up in the air had a great script and a couple great performances. I would even say inglorious b’s was better than hurt locker.
My problem is more with Up in the Air, and not whether Hurt Locker was as great as claimed or better than Basterds or whatever

Yeah. Or as in “ever becoming Blazers”. They are old unsigned second round picks. The only use is maybe as a throw in because sometimes you have to give up something to get a pick or similar asset. The Knicks and Rockets last year traded the rights to the French center who got dunked on by Vince Carter for the son of Patrick Ewing. Neither plays in the NBA as of now.

About Oden...
I read the transcript from his radio appearance and two things stood out:
1- that he watched the game from his home
2- that when asked about how the team’s spirit was after the game 5 loss that he claimed he had not talked to any of the players.
Is distancing himself from the team a normal thing for a player out for 1/2 a season to do, or is this something to worry about? I get that his focus should be on his health #1, but it would be nice if he were more involved, even though he is out.
Oden is
his own guy. One of the things we’re all going to have to live with regarding Greg is that he’s never going to seem as attached, enthusiastic, or emotionally invested as fans would like to see. Personally I couldn’t care less as long as he watches the paint like he did early this season.
Dave, why is Rice so obsessed over lawns in AZ?
"I think he’s been doing some good things. I think he’s been doing some good things. He’s had to play a lot of minutes lately with Blake being out. I think he’s been doing some good things." -Nate McMillan
There are no lawns in Arizona
There are rocks. There is green paint. Rich people have green-painted rocks. That is all.
My hunch is that he's talking about a different kind of "lawn"
if you get my drift. If you interpret his comments in that light they’ll make a lot more sense. Also you will be laughing when nobody else in the room is.

There has been a lot of second guessing on the decision to allow Roy to play (mostly by the National media Barkley, Mark Stein, Bill Simmons etc..). What are your thoughts on Roy’s return and the possible risk to his long term health?

I would assume
that the Blazers and Roy have carefully thought this through and decided there is zero risk. But in general I was against bringing back Roy unless 100%. Not only is there a risk of compensatory injury but there’s a false reliance there.

Jennings is cool and all
But Tyreke is a flat out beast. He deserved ROY and was heads and shoulders above the other rooks.
Not that Curry or Jennings are bad or anything. Reke was just awesome, for a rookie at his age.
#52
I'm not saying Reke didn't deserve it more than Jennings
I just thought he should have gotten a little more love from the voters.
to be fair, he’s been very inconsistent but he is on a winning team, so it’s harder for him to be a chucker like Stephen Curry
fiftytwo
Yeah, he is playing for something
Which would indeed inherently limit his raw stats. Curry and Reke didn’t have that situation.

Jennings has won
at every level he’s played (trip to Europe aside) for the last 7 years. He won 4 national championships in High School. For a PG, that is the only stat that matters.

Oak Hills Academy is a ridiculous boarding school that basically only gets incredible basketball prospects.
Jennings should not get the credit for being part of a superteam like that.
You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.
yes, very true, Oak Hill is usually loaded...
however, they also play the #1 toughest schedule in all of high school basketball because they don’t play in a local division. They’re like the Notre Dame of hs basketball and play the best teams from all over the country. I remember reading that when Jennings was a senior they beat 15 teams who went on to win their state championships. The most talent does not mean the most Ws and it takes a great floor leader to win 70+ games in a row against the best of the best.
yes
but findlay prep school is 4 years old… and isn’t even a high school. They take classes at a totally different school all together in Henderson, NV. Oak Hill, on the other hand, is a boarding school that focuses on college prep… not that Mr. “failed my SAT” Jennings got much of that while he was there
Fair enough.
Still, I’m much less impressed by that than winning at the college or high school levels, just because the team is likely more balanced (plus he probably wasn’t the primary floor leader for all 4 years).
I did see him at the Les Schwab once years ago. I always root for the local teams again Oak Hill, so I’m biased.

he only played 2 years at Oak Hill. Before that he was leading Compton Dominguez to the LA city championships as a freshman/sophomore and playing with arguably the greatest AAU team of all time with Kevin Love and Michael Beasley.
Haha, okay, okay, he was a great HS player, I concede.
Still, I don’t really factor in HS play once at the NBA level.
I think he’s a good NBA player, hopefully he can become a more efficient scorer then. But the Bucks’ success has most to do with Andrew Bogut, imo.

the really sad thing
is that the only reason that I know a bit about Jennings is because I’m a lifetime University of Arizona fan. I’m with you, HS records mean nothing and I am VERY bitter that he did not come to Tucson to prove that he could have had the same success in college.
Either way, what I really like about his game is that he is completely unselfish and a team-first player. He takes and makes big shots, but he’d rather dish out 15 assists than score 50. It’s rare to see that in a 20 year old these days.
You're crazy!!

So wishing I had wagered on Milwaukee to win that series...it was like +800
Instead of stupid Miami….I mean, if gambling was legal.

I will ask the mods’ opinions on stuff, yeah. But mostly I let them handle the modding. It’s a HUGE relief to have them. I get to spend a lot more time writing and thinking now.

Draft Coverage, Summer League, we’ll be doing more video analysis, we’ll have trade discussions…it’s actually going to be a more interesting summer than it would have been if the team was more settled. Rudy, Bayless, Webster are all going to be hot topics.

But the rest seems okay. You are allowed to like her.
The sad Hedo sideways eyes though… I see it in her.

Lol, Norsk! Actually Windows 7 could not have been the idea of any single person. It might have been designed by a committee!
Hey .. as I write this my computer is starting to freeze up!
Windows 7 is way too good to have been designed by a committee.

Travis could help a bit with our scoring right now. He might be a target for the MLE. Blake can play up-tempo in NY next season as he always wanted to. Or in Miami.
Eggzactalee!
Inconsistent offense and consistent not good defense and passing. It’s just not the direction we wanna go in.

I would prefer Childress. Or maybe Mike Miller. But I suppose one signs for more than the MLE and the other stays in Greece for one more year.
Ya think Mike Miller stays with the Wizards?
I don’t see any teams with cap space using it on Miller… for more than the MLE, anywho.

I miss Steve's ability to hit a shot when Roy or Bayless kick it out to him
I miss Outlaw’s personality
I’m glad their gone though. They got blamed for everything.
by tominhawaii on Apr 28, 2010 11:44 PM PDT up reply actions
I personally would really like to see Outlaw back.
Blake, not so much. Some better offensive planning could probably ensure that Roy stops kicking it out to Miller.
Dave
Who would like us to get in the draft? As in guys who would be reasonably available, that is, since we’re all hoping John Wall drops to the 20-something’th pick
Pon!
Pondexter would look awfully good out there with his ability to create for himself a little bit and his defense is pretty solid.
Dave
If you had the choice of this season with Hedo with his stats from this year, and no injuries, or Miller and the season we’ve had, what would you choose?
Hedo and no injuries
You’re basically asking if I’d take Hedo and Greg Oden, Joel Przybilla, half of Nicolas Batum, half of Rudy Fernandez, and a third of Brandon Roy for Andre Miller.
Exactly
That’s how I’ve felt all season

Dave, what do you think of Jerryd's game?
I think Bayless has improved quite a bit from last year and has shown signs of toughness/effort in the playoffs. His attitude seems like a good piece to help build a strong team.

Yes on all of that
Still question if he’s a fit, if he wants to be a fit, and whether we couldn’t get more long-term out of a purer PG plus a taller scoring guard off the bench. I love what J-Bay has done in this series though.
meh.

Of course, Phoenix is a team almost designed for him to do well against.
Not much interior D/shotblocking, Steve Nash defending him because ’Dre gets Dudley or Hill, lots of offense, etc.
I haven’t noticed much from him on D.
Still, I like JBay’s play this series as well.

Dave, roughly where would you rank our Broy/Miller backcourt with both at full health?
Among other backcourts in the league, of course.
I need to see them together for a few more months
Love the smarts. Love the offense in general plus the penetration and passing. Worried about defense, lack of outside shooting, ball control. I think in name value and general quality though you’d have to rank them quite high.
Agreed
If Andre comes back in shape early next year, we could start kicking some butt earlier. And maybe get blown by on defense earlier too, but that’s a work in progress.
That "if" is bigger than the meteor crater.

Well, it's more so whatever keeps Andre healthy for the entire season
Iron man > kicking but early, when we’re going to kick but later on either way anyway.

Dave, there are already rumors of sign/trade Bosh for Bynum plus filler
Pretend it goes down. Does Portland have to make adjustments, or stick with the plan?
Portland doesn't adjust to the L*kers
Portland makes L.A. adjust to them. Stick with it. In fact you have less resistance to Oden then.
If Oden can (Lord willing) be healthy
That means they have no one who can guard him. I would welcome that trade.
Would it leave no one in the West with Oden’s size? Suh-weet!

Would rather have Oden defend Bynum than Gasol though...
Would be alot of work further out than he likes to go
Nicolas Batum AKA Mr. Third Quarter
On Josh Smith "He's strong as a 2nd curtain"
On Lebron "...it's hype, he's not a defender"
On Aaron Brooks "He's tiny, he has a small body but he's super fast and has a real gesture"
On Steve Nash "First we'll have to try and stop this Canadian guard, a young kid with a bright future!"
On Defense "They all piss me off with Dwight Howard...Guys like Bruce Bowen or Ron Artest were legit defensive men of the year. For me that's the profile of a denfender.
On The Playoffs "I don't want Dallas to win because I don't want Rodrigue to be NBA champion, I would be pissed. I don't want him to be NBA champion in his 1st year, this bastard....I put myself in mode asshole!"
Meh. I wouldn't be impressed on the L@kers' part.
They already have a fantastic PF and plenty of offense.
Plus, yeah, adjust?

The most important for the triangle at least, definitely.

Gasol is of course good enough to play 5.
But it would be rather like Horford playing 5 in Atlanta, or Bropez in NJ.
