Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Brace yourself for this one... and remember the refs did not make the blazers play as crappy as they did last night (I don't blame them). However, this was Camby's 4th foul in the 3rd and had to be pulled right after... and we all know what happened from there.

The amazing Marcus Camby has the ability to foul without even being near Steve Nash.

I HAD to look at this again and it was worse than what I remember. This is definitely the worst foul called all year... because there literally was none. You can see Camby, Roy and Hill all confused on what was called.

Initially going to Roy, then changed to Camby... then Joey Crawford decides he fouled Nash and does some neck hand gesture.

HD is still be processed, so give it a minute.

I hope the league reviews that “foul” and reprimands Crawford somehow. Nothing has gone our way this year. So is the life of a Blazer.

Officially, there is no recourse (contractually) for the NBA to punish refs under any circumstances, other than firing...

It’s one of the reasons no one is allowed to talk about refs… what is the NBA supposed to do? They can’t fine refs for things.

by JordanLeDoux on Apr 27, 2010 6:26 AM PDT up reply actions

blah it the post too soon.

Crawford was suspended after his fight with Duncan a few years back if you remember. They can remove him from the ref playoff pool, and not allow him to ref any more playoff games, which would be like a fine, since he would not earn the extra money for those games.

exactly

It was a no call. If they felt like they had to make a call, it would clearly have to be a moving screen on Hill. First he pushes Roy out of the way, then he steps sideways into camby, it was two moving screens in one play. Unbelievable.

Geez

at some point you just have to wonder if Stern and crew are actually reviewing refs, and if so should that information be made more public (transparent officiating as Henry Abbott refers to). I would really, really like to get a response from the NBA on this one. But no, they will just sweep it under the rug. It didn’t lose us the game, but crap like this sure doesn’t help.

I think it may well have cost us this game

We can all pretend that the officiating in this game did not matter. Sure the team should not have collapsed with Camby out. But look at the video and look at the numbers through 3 qtrs of this game:

Camby out (2nd foul) 23-11 4:55 1st
Camby back 34-34 9:21 in second
Camby leaves 47-52 0:52 in second
Camby back 47-57 start of 3rd
Camby Out (4th foul) 58-65 5:20 3rd
Camby back in start of 4th 66-84

In other words, with Camby in, Portland was up 10 (47 – 37)points in the first 3 qtrs (and portland had just cut a 14 point lead to 7 when the 4th call was made), while, with Camby on the bench Portland was down 29 (19-47).
Joey Crawford should face severe consequences for his incompetence.

Good recap. This is at least half of the reason we lost. This isn’t L*kers-Kings game 6 bad, but it’s worth the Blazer organization making a stink over.

Despite what the NBA and Stern want you to believe, officials have emotions and agenda’s just like every other human being on the planet. When they let it interfere with fair competition and there are no repercussions, it just makes the whole association look bad.

Mess with the game, it'll mess with you.

It’s about putting Camby on the bench with 4 fouls, in a 7 pt game. There was absolutely no foul on anyone. Crawford tells Nate that he grabbed his neck. What the hell was he looking at, nobody made any sort of contact whatsoever with anybody’s neck.

but it was incidental contact and definitely a questionable foul, especially for the significance in the playoffs. and of course, nash was nowhere near it.

Look, I'm a homer

I feel like my dog died last night. I’m clearly not impartial. And I was confined to enjoy the game via Wheels and Ton last night, so my homerism was def. magnified.

I haven’t said this before but I’m saying now that the refs were absolutely influencing the game. Oh, sure, we probably could have found a way to win in spite of the refs (although no way to prove that). We can definitely question some coaching decisions, play making, etc.

But it remains the case that fouls matter. This one was the most egregious. But you also apparently had guys called for blocking fouls because they were inside the key, when they were not in the key. You had Dre called for a couple travels early. Two illegal defenses early, in a playoff game?

The fact that they tend to even out is moot. For one, it seemed like they made a bad call on guys like Roy and Camby, then “paid us back” with a bad call on Collins. Second you need to look at timing. Roy is coming back from an injury. Hey, maybe he’s late on defense and really did bump a guy, but he is our All Star right? Where’s that special treatment? How about just a little freaking courtesy!

Blah, Thats all i’ve got.

Watched that video several times.

No Blazer defender was even within arm’s length of Nash, let alone near enough to grab his neck.

Crawford clearly said – while Nate was standing there silent about the situation as usual – “Hey! Steve Nash: (pointing to the foul line) One plus one.” Then to McMillan as an explanation, “Grabbed his neck.” While he gestured what he says happened.

There can’t be any explanation for this call, or the lack of a correction by the other officials who actually had a good angle to see what was going on (Crawford was on the baseline with about five guys between him and Nash so he couldn’t have seen anything that happened to Nash).

There is no excuse. What ticks me off most about this though is McMillan’s response, virtually nothing. No sticking up for Camby, just standing there mouth moving like a fish out of water. Where’s the passion you want your players to exhibit coach?

Surreal. Finally I'm starting to suspect something fishy.

I haven’t blamed the refs for costing us; I believe that, on average, it evens out. But this was weird and makes me wonder that if they’re that willing to call a blatantly non foul, were they doing anything else that was harder to catch?

Maybe they really want to make this go seven games. That’d be good news for us, but why would the NBA care about extending a series that has very low nation-wide appeal? PDX is too small, the Suns have no hip stars, and it’s an all-PDT affair. Hmmmm

After watching it several times,

it looks like he hits Hill in the neck slightly. It’s a ticky tack call. The real issue is how Crawford mistakes Steve Nash for Grant Hill. With three refs out there, you’d think one of them would have seen that Nash wasn’t the one fouled.

it’s true that Camby hits hill in the neck, but Hill is coming to set a screen on Camby for Amare (not cutting to get open) and he’s moving. That’s an illegal screen.

The Suns got away with moving screens and picks the entire game. Bayless also got called for a foul for running into a moving pick set by the Suns (Frye or Collins).

Frye was running into defenders all games. It made him especially tough to track on rebounds and I think accounts for some of the offensive boards they got. Frustrating in any case

I caught this during the game

thanks to the DVR. On the TNT feed it looked like Crawford eventually apologizes to Nate or one of the other officials after realizing that Nash should not be shooting the FT. Then, the following possession (for the Blazers) Crawford calls two touch fouls on the Suns. Make-up calls. At that point, the game lost some credibility to me.

by PoliSam on Apr 27, 2010 10:43 AM PDT reply actions

I actually reviewed the calls on the Blazers with the DVR too

There was contact on both plays, but similar contact at other points in the game was not called. In addition, in neither case did the contact give the Suns a significant advantage. Very strange.

At first I thought Nash pulled a quick one...

as PGs are known to do in FT situations. But after seeing Crawford blow a whistle while staring directly at Camby/Hill it is clear that Crawford is senile and should be fired. He has made so many absurd calls in the playoffs over the years and the Tim Duncan “Do you want to fight me?” incident would have got anybody else fired in a job situation.

Games 4 and 5 had way too many BS whistles. Let them play in game 6 six and ship Crawford to another series.

Thank you so much for posting this.

This should bar Crawford from anymore playoff officiating. I was so disgusted with this I turned off the game and I’m just not going to bother watching any games Crawford has his hands in. I thought calling a T on Duncan while he was on the bench was bad, but he has outdone himself this time. That’s just blowing a whistle for the sake of blowing a whistle.

Life is hilarious.

by SolGoode on Apr 27, 2010 1:48 PM PDT reply actions

wowie zowie!

I think Joey anticipated a foul by Roy on Hill and then realizing Roy is our superstar in foul trouble switched it to the next closest Blazer which was Camby.

(which then he realized was also in foul trouble and important in the game)

So he then just said a blazer fouled Nash beacuse Nash usally gets bumped all the time although this time no one was near him. He was probably going to later “correct” the call by taking it from Camby and giving it to was ever closests to Nash.

Then his brain overheated by the complexity of such a thing so he just made a couple of make up calls.

Eeewww. Now I have to go take a shower.

by meatwad3 on Apr 27, 2010 2:12 PM PDT reply actions

This situation

It happened very shortly before the whistle sounds, 1:20 into the video. If it was ruled as an off the ball foul, and the Blazers were in the penalty, Nash could go to the line. The confusion probably gets created by Crawford yelling Nash’s name to Nate or wherever. There is no way he could have though the foul was directly on Nash.

by Norsktroll on Apr 27, 2010 4:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Why would Nash be allowed to shoot the freethrows if the foul wasn't against him?

If indeed Camby did foul Grant Hill, shouldn’t it have been Hill at the line regardless of who had the ball?

Star treatment?

As I watched this last night, this was what I thought must have happened.

1. Crawford whistles Roy for impeding.

2. Nate questions the call, Crawford realizes he whistled the Blazer’s star player for his fourth foul. He quickly changes the foul to Camby, the next closest player to the play, thus protecting Roy.

3. This is where it gets weird. As some sort of cosmic payback for protecting Roy, Crawford quickly decides to send Nash, the Suns best free throw shooter, to the line.

4. Because refs are never supposed to appear to have missed a call or make a mistake, which might cost them their authority, he confidently sends Nash to the line. Much to the wonderment of Steve Nash and everyone else in the universe.

Now, we see this all the time in the NBA. How many times in this series have we seen a Blazer guard get leveled by Amare, only to have the foul called on the trailing defender (if the whistle blows at all)?

I know it’s not a popular view, but I want EVERY ref to call EVERY foul they see, and call it on THE PERSON WHO COMMITTED THE FOUL. It would be ugly for about a half season, but the players would adapt. And we’d have a much more fluid game.
