Where is Gregory?
Mom's couch in Indiana slurping down Spagheti watching on TNT?(thank goodness too because League Pass is apparently too much moola for Mr. Oden.)
Or was he actually back in Portland for this CRUCIAL game?
I mean Roy coming back early makes Oden look like a punk to be quite honest.
I know it sucks Greg you can't jump in and help, but it's called MORAL Support for a team that made you it's number 1 pick, has stayed with you through all your TERRIBLE injuries, and yet you apparently aren't even sitting courtside? I know sitting on some of those chairs can get painfull for your bum leg, but at least come out here and there, go get a stretch, grab some food in the locker room...PLEASE.
I'm seriously considering trading you in my 2k10 Gregory(*gasp), please man...I honestly love your GLOWING personality(on the GO with G.O. is great) and potential, but where is your HEART right now?
Please someone tell me he was at the game...was he hiding behind Sagger's suit?

They're two entirely different knee issues.
To say this makes Oden look like a “punk” is just ridiculous. If anything, I’m thinking Oden isn’t going to games to avoid taking any time or attention away from what the TEAM is doing. He doesn’t want to be a distraction.
"Ain't nothin' in this world for free."
I'm not asking for him to suit up I know Greg's was WAAAY more serious.
But still, BRoy risks his health and shows effort, and all we want from Greg is to show up.
If you were chums/teammates with someone and they weren’t there supporing you wouldn’t you feel a little odd?
Not like he’s a rah rah guy to begin with but I just don’t understand the dynamics of Greg not showing up or even watching games(had Direct TV yet no League Pass in Indiana so didn’t watch games…weeks ago confirmed.).
It’s just one more thing in a series of events that makes me wonder where his desire and heart is for the future.
I really hope I am wrong.

How do you know this? I havn’t heard ANYTHING about Greg since he said he’s going back to his moms and NOT watching his teamates play. I’ve been trying not to get too down on Greg, but he’s not really giving anything positive since his injury.

This is the same silliness we heard when he said he was going to take classes at OSU last summer.
All of a sudden he didn’t care about basketball, had no drive and all that. Get a grip.
Yeah
He did a Radio Interview before the post season, and said he would be here for the entire post season.
We went like this, he went like that. I say to Hollywood: Where'd he go? Hollywood says: where'd who go?
Really? I swear I heard them say he was back in Indiana.
Anyone have 100% confirmation he was here?
What about today’s game?

Didn't he also say he was going to be traveling with the team, during the playoffs?
Now he can’t even watch from the bench?
I too am aggravated that he isn’t even watching the games.
Witty Unpredictable Talent and Natural Game
he was in Indiana for the end of the regular season.
He was seen, briefly, at the practice facility the other day, right after we got back from game 2. But no one in the media saw him do any training. Of course, no one in the media knew that BRoy did a full court, full-contact two on two practice yesterday either. He could be dunking on Pendy in secret, underground practice sessions for all we know. Or he could be sitting in a whirlpool.

He was in Indiana, but he said he would be coming back to Portland for the playoffs and would be traveling with the team to Phoenix and would be in the training room watching the games.

I’ll bet seeing Roy come back so easily from a knee injury and turn the tide of game four gives Greg pause. I’ll bet it even leads him to place a phone call. A phone call which ends very differently from Brandon’s.
When he wakes up in bed tomorrow I'll be right there next to him saying "Brandon I like you just the way you are". - Mike Rice
Roy didn't risk his health. There's no risk of long-term damage.
If there were, the trainer would NEVER have let him play. And I know this for a fact—I had the same meniscus surgery.
I think it would be cool to see him at the games.
It’s moral support btw, unless you were trying to be cute with words.
it hurts his knee
to sit on or behind the bench with it bent like that and him being 7 freaking feet tall and all that.
So when he is at the garden, he often watches from in the back.
Personally, I’d rather have him rehabbing or something, getting closer to being on the floor rather than sitting in a suit wishing he was playing.
Come on you gotta listen unto me,
lay off that whiskey and let that cocaine be. ~Johnny Cash
Yeah I hear ya. Maybe show up for pregame something, wish team well, then go rehab/watch game.
But he’s not doing that is he? And for the last part of the season I don’t believe he has done much of that besides maybe a few times showing up then watching in the back reclined.
I wonder if he is just completly demoralized about having 2 terrible knee injuries in 3 years and might just be burned out on rehab and not playing.
Like it’s rubbing salt in the wound per se by just being there.
Is he mentally tough enough to overcome this and bounce back? I hope so.

I think, he'll be OK
He just needs to start playing again. As long as he stays healthy it won’t take him long to start enjoying next season with this team

How do you know he's not showing up and wishing the team well? Are you in the locker room?
I think you want him to come out and give YOU moral support—he can definitely do that for his teammates without doing it in front of 30,000 fans.
TyboOSU
Aren’t you assuming a lot?
Maybe show up for pregame something, wish team well, then go rehab/watch game. But he’s not doing that is he?
He’s said he’s doing exactly that. Just because he’s not doing it in public doesn’t mean he’s not there.
Do you remember that Greg was hoping to come back and play at the end of the season? In the interviews I’ve heard him give, he’s been saying that the team trainers have had him shut it down for the season. He didn’t just decide to go on vacation because he missed his mommy. You really think that he makes those sorts of decisions without some input from the team? From all that I’ve heard about how hard Greg works out, they probably had to really force the guy to give up on playing this season before he would shut it down. He’s never talked about being shut down for the season in a way that would make anyone think he’s happy about it.
Can we all stop assuming and extrapolating “truths” about one player from the totally different circumstances of another player please?

Can we all stop assuming and extrapolating "truths"
Sorry, but I had to point out what I feel is a significant inconsistency. What is good for the goose is good for the gander???
I guess I have never really believed all the hype about Greg’s workout prowess—to me his workouts, as reflected by his weight and body fat levels, need to take another step forward. In fact, that is the biggest question I have about him—I don’t think he has ever really been in shape for the Blazers. (Push away from the table young man!) He was in much better shape in college, something that should not be. And yes, I know about his injuries.
Taking this reality into consideration, a lot of people are questioning (with good cause) his desire to be great, his conditioning, and his desire to be a good team mate.
As a fan of his, I can tell you that I have him rated as a much better player than what he has shown himself to be thus far. It makes me sick when people criticize him in terms of his potential or natural ability—on the other hand, when they question his effort up to this point, I have to admit that the injuries are only a small part of what may be a larger problem. I really want to see him grow up and take his job seriously. I am rooting for him, but I am not blind.
21+52=
Is there any rational basis for this?
Taking this reality into consideration, a lot of people are questioning (with good cause) his desire to be great, his conditioning, and his desire to be a good team mate.
Greg’s rookie year obviously had mixed results. However, I think this can be attributed to:
(1) Microfracture recovery and accompanying return to full physical fitness, from which it takes two years to regain full explosiveness. Of course he didn’t look as good as he did in college—he was still recovering from the MF!
(2) Adjusting to the speed of the game, something that can take several years particularly for a big man. Simply put, in the first year, the speed of the game left him behind and caused him to foul, limiting his minutes.
Despite looking really awkward, Greg posted phenomenal per-minute stats, and remained a promising rookie. Over the summer, he got in better shape (so he wasn’t huffing and puffing up and down the court so bad) and worked very hard on post moves and counters. In the 20 games he played this fall, he looked much smoother, and had developed a rudimentary but effective post game. He was also in better shape. His numbers showed he was one of the five most effective centers in the league before he got hurt.
But you know all this. So what’s the rationale basis for saying he doesn’t take conditioning seriously? He was very obviously lighter in weight and on his feet when he came into camp last year than his rookie year. Was that an accident?
Yes there is a rational basis for questioning his conditioning, attitude, etc..
He has consistently been 20-30+ pounds over Nate’s publicly stated goal weight for him—and the question of how much he actually weighs, at any given time, is consistently avoided. When asked about his weight the other day, he just said it is difficult to keep your weight down when you are rehabbing. I call BS on that one. Camby, for example, has been hurt a number of times—I don’t ever recall hearing about any weight issues.
I have been a huge fan of Greg’s from the time he was at OSU and have probably been more focused on him (for a longer period of time) than what many fans may have been. I can say without hesitation that he has gone for months at a time, during the season—out of shape! He runs up and down the court a couple of times and is breathing too heavily. He appears to be almost gasping for air.
I wish it wasn’t so, but conditioning has been the biggest limiting factor on his game thus far in the pros. Have the injuries played a part? Yes! But there is clearly more to it than that. Attitude? Maturity? Team orientation? Experience? Overall health? Weak bones?
I hope he is able to prove all of the doubters, who are rightfully questioning him at this point, wrong. Like all true fans, I want to see him do it. But he is going to have to prove it! This non-sense has gone on long enough. No more pictures on the internet. No more sitting separately on the team plane. No more being over weight. No more avoiding the media’s post game questions. No more awe shucks attitude.
Comparing him to KD is ridiculous, but a little more of the professionalism that KD naturally exudes would be in order at this point. I would love to be able to say, with conviction, when all is said and done, that we made the right pick. I did not even think it was all that close at draft time—GO was the pick—now I just wish he would get serious about demonstrating it!

Greg is still in Indiana
because he thinks that watching his teammates fight for their lives at the RG up close will make him sad.

week before the end of the regular season, Greg Oden told the media he would be traveling with the Blazers during the playoffs, and was looking forward to the experience.
So where has the 7-footer been? In his hometown of Indianapolis, rehabbing.
Oden is gone with Blazer management’s blessing. The thinking was, when he is around his teammates and not playing, Oden takes it hard. He is better off being at a distance from all the action.
The Blazer center is almost six months out from December knee surgery. All indications are rehab is going well and he will be ready to go for October training camp.
"I don’t think there’s a doubt," Pritchard said. "He’s going to be fine."

Thanks for the post.
That’s the first mention of where he is since his interview saying he’d be traveling with the team apparently.
Great news that he’s rehabbing the knee still and not losing ground on that by resting it too much.
"She turned me into a newt!
A newt?
...I got better."
Oh sure, he's at the games.
You just can’t see him because it hurts his knee or his feelings. It’s magic.
Like Roy, he’s going to do what he can to support the team and get out there as soon as he can. He’s just like b-roy.
Hah!
He’s not back in Indiana eating spaghetti. It’s spaghetti-o’s.
What is best from Greg in the long run is what he should be doing right now.
If that means sitting in the training room watching the game, let him sit there.
If the docs told him to suit up because he is 100%, then suit up.
Greg is doing what the docs are saying and what his body is saying. Everyone needs to lay off the big guy UNTIL he gets back to game shape. All of this anger towards him is ridiclous and is getting old quickly.
Get well when you can Greg.
/////
((o))
/////
I don't get this.
You heard how much it was killing Roy not being out there to the point that he pestered his way back into the lineup, even though he’s not 100% Do you think Greg’s heart is aching any less? He’s not 100% yet. Going out on the floor would be really bad for him. But he has that same heart, that same desire to go out and give it all for his team that Roy does, maybe even moreso. He’s been rehabbing his knees for two of his three years in order to give all he has for this team.
With that kind of dedication, with that kind of spirit, I think it would be more harmful than helpful to have him here. He’s been here during the regular season, in the back, but towards the end of the season, during crunch time, he wasn’t. Because he has no heart? Not a chance. It hurts less to get away from it. It’s better for him if he’s not here, anxious to do something stupid in an effort to help. I think the team knows this. I don’t think they’re worried about Greg not being there for them. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a teammate’s idea to get him home, where he could be distracted more easily and not worry as much.
So the only reason to have Greg here in Portland on the end of the bench is so that fans can play pretend-papparazzi and look at him. He’s not in a zoo. He’s a human being just like the rest of us. And from everything I’ve seen over the last three years from the big guy, his heart is the last thing I’ll ever question, even if I don’t get to ogle his big mug for half a second when the camera pans to the bench.
"[S]ince men enjoyed very great leisure, they used it to pursue many kinds of commodities unknown to their fathers, and that was that first yoke they placed upon themselves without thinking about it, and the first source of evils the prepared for their descendants. For, besides continuing thus to soften body and mind, as these commodities had lost almost all their pleasantness through habit, and as they had at the same time degenerated into true needs, being deprived of them became much more cruel than possessing them was sweet; and people were unhappy to lose them without being happy to have them." -Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Maybe, just maybe
this whole Greg resting his knee business came about as a result of Joel re-injuring his knee? I’m not exactly sure of the time-frame in which he started laying off the intense rehab in favor of rest, but it seems that it may have been an influencing factor. Knees are fragile, scary things and any injury to them has to be handled with care. More so for somebody of his size. Back before the before time, in my playing days of yore, I was told that when I was making a spinning post move I was placing over 800lbs of force on my pivot knee (I stand at 6’11" and at the time weighed about 280 or so.)

Maybe he IS doing his best to support the team
Perhaps they don’t want him hanging around courtside. Maybe he wants to be there but out of respect for his teammates’ wishes is staying away. It could be that they find it distracting/depressing. It’s not like he’s as much a part of this team as Roy, for he really hasn’t had much of a chance to participate. He could feel embarrassed (and make the others uncomfortable) with his #1 status and salary.
Probably not, but there is another angle/story/excuse.
I, too, love Oden’s ads. I really hope he can come back at whatever level he can play next year.

Management's Choice
The Blazers are paying Greg. Wherever he is, it’s because Blazer management decided he should be there. That said, what are they thinking? Remove a seat, give him a decent chair and have him present for the home games. He’s Portland’s title hope.
He can film “Greg does Portland” and be on the billboards and marketing swag. All that work, they should have him in the arena and waving a towel. That’s basic marketing.
The guy is everywhere. How can it be that no one seems to definitively know why he’s not in the arena?
