Textual Junk Drawer 4-24-2010
the other night i had to breakup with a mistress....she was a crazy ginger...stalkerish. i feared for my life after i came back from breakfast. she had photoshopped pictures of us in a fake wedding and left all the pictures in frames all around the hotel. she also got a crib and put a cabbage patch doll in it with the name "baby freckles"
she left a note saying, "you haven't called or text today, i miss you." it was only 9 am. the note was written in ginger blood.
so i checked out of the hotel, text her "i don't want to see you anymore, i want to break up. forever" and threw away my 2nd phone.
the next thing i know, my friend called me and he's been held ransomed by some big bone bald guy that carries a shaving cream bag demanding my friend give up my name and location. the guy kept yelling, "i will murder you if if you don't tell me his name...NO ONE breaks up by text" my friend left after the db went to watch some sports game and had to go to the hospital because his chipotle was too spicy.
gingers are crazy. texting FTW!
If you don't text GO BLAZERS to 10 people today before the game, we will lose.
peace. stay cool. forever.

I think it’s just a strange coincidence.

Face-to-face is the only way to breakup.
You can’t have breakup sex if you do it any other way. Of course, it might not be worth it with a crazy psycho ginger lady. Then again, ginger ladies are 77times better than the best ginger guy. So many variables.

"[S]ince men enjoyed very great leisure, they used it to pursue many kinds of commodities unknown to their fathers, and that was that first yoke they placed upon themselves without thinking about it, and the first source of evils the prepared for their descendants. For, besides continuing thus to soften body and mind, as these commodities had lost almost all their pleasantness through habit, and as they had at the same time degenerated into true needs, being deprived of them became much more cruel than possessing them was sweet; and people were unhappy to lose them without being happy to have them." -Jean-Jacques Rousseau

I don’t know a ton about college bb, but this seems like a weird choice. Creighton was one of the best non-BCS teams around 2000-05, but they’ve been the 3rd best team in their own league for the past 4-5 years (behind NIU and Wichita State). So arguably you’re picking up a guy who’s not looking for a step up, but is no longer as successful as he wants to be at a mid-major and trying for a change of scenery. And Altman has been there 16 years, so he’s not super young, and I wonder how he’ll handle transitioning to a major conference. It’s also a bit of a red flag that he’s still at Creighton after all these years.
Other Altman proteges include NBA luminaries Rodney Buford and Anthony Tolliver.
some creighton fans are glad he’s gone b/c of lack of improvement over the last couple years…

They went for broke and it didn’t work. Its a solid fallback. I don’t think its nearly as strange a hire as Craig Robinson was.
totally different situations, though, right? OSU was one of the worst basketball programs in the country for nearly a decade and didn’t have any reason to expect a good hire. UO expected the cream of the coaching crop.

it comes down to the fact that the fanbase and media expected UO to leap into the upper echelon of basketball programs. I don’t think this hire accomplished that.

Not necessary in the NFL
Since you can just cut someone and you don’t have to pay them anymore.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Thurmond could be very good for SEA btw
Would have been probably second round if not for injuries.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
so basically Tennessee is saying LenDale White is worth less than a seven slots in the 4th round and 19 slots in the sixth round? I guess they have Chris Johnson, but that’s not very much.
Given how easily RBs get hurt in the NFL yeah
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Chris Johnson has about two more good years before he gets run down the way they are using him. Sad, really. Enjoy him while you can.

yeah, but safeties aren’t as important. The closer to the line of scrimmage, the more important the player. Just like basketball—the closer to the hoop.
when the player’s talent level is clearly above those being drafted around him, and you’re as bad at safety as Seattle was, it’s a fine pick. It’s like Schatz from FO said… sure, picking a safety in the first isn’t the best value. But, if Ed Reed were in the draft, he’d be the first pick. If you’re confident he’s a better player than what’s around him, you take him regardless of position.

everything i’ve read about him is that he’s undersized and relatively inexperienced. also teams weren’t sure if he’d be able to stick at safety in the nfl, or if he’d have to move to corner.
i’d say it was a solid pick, but i wouldn’t say it was ‘great value’ at 14.
I’m not an NFL expert by any means; but I hear every analyst saying it was a great pick by Seattle, so I’m leaning toward believing that. Also, not sure how he can be inexperienced… all college players play 3 or 4 years right?

Clearly a far better college coach than pro coach
But then again that’s like saying Phil Jackson would be a far better pro coach than college coach, Caroll is simply one of the best in College FB in a long time.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
being a college coach is just easier once you get your program going. All the institutional advantages go toward winning programs. It’s the opposite in the NFL where all the rules force you to constantly rethink your strategy and priorities, b/c the cap is tight and even your best players might be overpaid.
But it doesn't work both directions
See Weis, Charlie.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
that’s true. I don’t know if he was ever a head coach though. Just never seemed to take motivation seriously—always talking about “schematic advantages” and other BS.
Also, you can’t succeed if you don’t take your competition seriously. I don’t think Weis thought college FB coaches could seriously challenge him because of his pro chops.
Yeah...I was looking at his wiki page
it is about like I remembered…ok but sorta Meh…plus his New England record should looked at in the prism of being sandwiched between two hall of fame coaches …Parcells and Belicheat

I wanted to do a scenarios player movement post, but that could become boring
I’m about 80% certain that LeBron, Wade and Amare will just re-sign where they are (in that order of likelihood). Only Bosh will change teams. And maybe Johnson. NY is screwed.
Meant to post this in the JD, but Miami is considering dumping Beasley
Tried to trade him at the deadline.
Why
we need Cool Bease because he would be the only guy on the team with cornrows. Remember back in the day when every player on the Blazers had cornrows.good old days
/cambyfive
Nice to see that Joel F has become the best player on his team against tough competition
Not enough to take over the game, but he has made a lot of progress. No space for him with Camby + Greg + Joel P + Jeff though. Would have to move 1 or 2 of those.

I think they can wait for him, Luis Scola-style
Reportedly KP tried to bring him over last summer, but he preferred the deal Malaga gave him to continue his development in Spain. He might not be quite as eager as Rudy to take less salary just to play in the NBA since the ACB is already a big thing for him. And for sure he wouldn’t want to be the #5 big man. Since he’s also able to play 4 (probably more natural for him in the NBA) and 5, down the line when Joel and Camby are gone seems most likely.
Report: #Blazers’ Roy went hard and looked good during shootaround. Might try and go for Game 5 vs. #Suns.

simply taking Dante’s spot. I highly doubt he plays. Maybe for 1 final play or something. Makes it more likely he’ll play in game 5 though.
Either way, I'll give Nate credit
Just having Roy in his playing uniform will throw Phoenix for a loop
I mean, him being ready for game 5 (if he is) is great. Him dressing but not playing for game 4 is totally irrelevant.
it is basically proof that he’s going to try and go in game 5, which is great news for portland’s chances this series

"[S]ince men enjoyed very great leisure, they used it to pursue many kinds of commodities unknown to their fathers, and that was that first yoke they placed upon themselves without thinking about it, and the first source of evils the prepared for their descendants. For, besides continuing thus to soften body and mind, as these commodities had lost almost all their pleasantness through habit, and as they had at the same time degenerated into true needs, being deprived of them became much more cruel than possessing them was sweet; and people were unhappy to lose them without being happy to have them." -Jean-Jacques Rousseau

halladay vs lincecum for the cy young should be an epic race this year.
too bad all of you hate baseball
I heard the Giants had a very solid pitching rotation this year and would only miss another strong batter to make some noise in the West
Maybe I adopt that team for the summer. The Red Sox are boring to watch, the Yankees are so-so, and I don’t care for baseball ;)
also, giants games usually only take abut 2.5 hours because none of their players are patient at the plate!
they have arguably the best rotation in the majors, except their 5th starter has been terrible to start the year. but lincecum and their best hitter (pablo sandoval) are about as entertaining as players in the majors get
I dislike Sandoval. Fat athletes frustrate me.

shocking result. Didn’t think Roy would play until at least game 6, didn’t think LA had a game like that in him, didn’t think Howard had that game in him (worried this will encourage Nate though), and didn’t expect Nash to be that bad today. Series just got very interesting.
Suns take the series in 7 if Roy continues to be this limited. Blazers will need more from him to win on the road since the emotional lift will wear off.
and we don’t have to rely on Rudy. Good bench player at minimum, but I still think we’ll need star Roy to win the series.

Where Brandon Roy sets 20000+ fans into a complete frenzy. Being there today was one of the best things I’ve seen in my life. The crowd was insane, the team played great, LMA was incredible today, and I’m completely elated right now. I bet the GDT was pretty wild today.

Hehe, I love how Suns fans are whistling in the forrest again, as if this game means nothing
You have in this series two teams that rely on jump shots. Tonight, they (mostly LA) made theirs and the Suns didn’t.
It’s going to happen. On balance, the Suns have better shooters but it is crazy to think they will make their three’s in every game.
Both of these teams are flawed but Suns less so. Best of 3 series now w/ home court. I’m good. All gooooood.
No whining about the refs either. Very little patience for that.
They killed us on the offensive glass in the first quarter but as a result we ran the ball. They adjusted and stopped crashing the glass and we did better on the 2nd chance points but couldn’t run.
LA hit turn around fadeaways like he was Dirk but he’s not Dirk and won’t do that consistently. They also were much better prepared for double teams on LA and their OGs hit some shots. Roy in the 4th especially b/c he’s Brandon Freakin Roy and that’s what he does.
This game didn’t change ANYTHING

Oh and we actually made fewer 3s than the Suns, they just shot wayyyy more bricks.

And L-Train just covered one of my other favorites.
But this has me chuckling.

I don't think the Bobcats want to undraft Felton. Rather Augustin.
And the Lakers would love to “draft” Felton this summer to replace the Man Gone Fishin’.

He basically said the Thunder are the next great team
and are taking over LA’s spot as the top team.
Team KP
I'll be honest
I’d much rather see the Thunder somehow upset the Fakers then see the Fakers advance to the 2nd round against Utah/Den who are both weakened right now.
I’m just so sick of the Fakers. I haven’t gotten to that level with OKC. It could get that way soon, but not yet.

yeah, Snapper kept him in check.
I can’t believe Seattle got to have Calabro and Snapper as their local team for a year or two. That’s a dream team for a local broadcast, though the Nets get Marv/Czar sometimes which is unreal also.
yeah. i think because so many commentators are mediocre, when one comes along that is great (explains the game, maintains excitement, is fairly unbiased) they really really stand out.
that’s why i’ve always liked Rick Rizzs. he did all of those things pretty well.

Well I can understand that allegations your team is playing dirty is not what you want to hear after a win and a loss two nights in a row. And it’s hard to prove intent. On the other hand, no matter what really happened I like that they claim “nothing happened” and don’t act like that. It’s like Phil Jackson getting into Durant’s head for game 1.
Blazers fans are kind of annoying.

I said it would be a 6 game series. Still think so. OKC ties it up today, then the Lakers get serious.
I had this series even going into the playoffs
The Lakers aren’t threatening at all considering their bench and Kobe’s injuries. Durant has a favorable matchup against Artest because he can’t keep up with him. I’m surprised he has struggled this much so far.

Some proactive adjustments for game 5. Try to get the Suns on their heels, just a bit. Maybe the occasional full court press, deny Nash the ball like they denied Miller the ball.

i liked when they had LA guarding Nash and switched Batum on to Amare. that seemed to be pretty effective.
i think if Roy plays again and is even more effective, that might be a good adjustment right there cause it opens up the offense so much. have to focus on 3 people instead of just two.

that is a legitimately tough question. I think Zito will have the better ERA and WHIP (ERA around 3.5 or so?), but Porcello will have more wins. I might make the move actually. Depends on your team and your league.

And I will also put in feedback to our corporate team to get this released to the public since I wouldn’t mind having a pair or two. And if you have any other questions for me. See, Stern threatened Brandon before the last few games of the season
He told Brandon if he didn’t fake an injury and sit out so the Blunder could get a higher seed, he would eat Broy’s dog. Apparently stern was really pissed about the Blazers beating the blunder anyways and Roy finally decided that he didn’t like that dog too much anyways as it was always jumping at his crotch and poopin on the bed, so he finally said screw it and decided to play today. So now Stern wants to act like there never was a Brandon Roy and he’s trying to pull him out of the records.

Despite the outcome, the Blazers were savaged by critics on national TV for putting Roy’s long-term health at risk
The key determinant, according to a Blazers insider, was that trainers and medical staff determined Roy could do no further damage to the knee by playing. He actually had considered postponing surgery and playing with the torn meniscus — again, doctors had determined it couldn’t get any worse — but the discomfort finally prompted him to go under the knife on April 16.
national tv = idiots

Worst off-season move by a contender?
Ariza for Artest.
"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith
Who did they lose to sign Sheed?
Leon Powe was injured. Lakers decided against signing Ariza when they had the first chance.
"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith
Nobody, but he makes 18 million over 3 seasons. For that kind of money, they could have tried to make a run at Lee. Or Ariza. Anybody worth the MLE who doesn't stink.
I still think the Artest signing is much worse.
They replaced one of their most important playoff players with a guy who doesn’t fit.
"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith
Boston was already deteriorating. I don't think Rasheed is as big a factor in their decline as Artest is.
Does anyone think it would be a good idea for LMA to expand his game by working on his 3's this summer?
/cambyfive
being able to take those pick and pops from 3 instead of from 20 feet would be a very nice addition to his game.
I read an interview where a coach talked about this one time.
He had a bunch of reasons why it’s not always a good idea. The value can’t just be measured in the extra points that come from three pointers. There are some pluses that come from shooting long twos rather than three’s.
I don’t really want to do anything that takes LMA farther away from the basket.
by Nick Van Excellent on Apr 24, 2010 8:35 PM PDT up reply actions
I don't have the interview on me, I'll look for it.
I can’t really remember, but I know rebounding for one. Better position to cut towards the basket. The mental aspect of making long two’s at a greater rate than three’s might actually help to space the defense better. Long rebounds can lead to fast breaks so you may be increasing the speed of the game by shooting three’s. Better passing options such as hitting other people rolling towards the basket. Better ball movement overall. You have a better option of dribbling into the lane depending on traffic, something a big man like LMA couldn’t do on the perimeter.
I’m not saying him shooting three’s is a bad idea, it’s just not as simple as a three being worth more than a two.

I think it would be a good idea to work out against more bruising big men (maybe in the LA camp), and not just against Durant. Also maybe his invitation to the Team USA camp finally helps him, though the chance he actually makes the team is like 5%.

it was like he was trying to twist the story about how important Dre's play had been down the stretch
He also talked about how brilliant Nate was for publicly taking responsibility for the argument they had early in the season that led to Miller getting his proper role as a starter. He was acting like Nate didn’t have it coming and was completely being magnanimous in the whole affair. Revisionist column writing, it’s pretty typical for him.

The athleticism of this Thunder team is absolutely unreal.
Makes the blazers look like a bunch of stiffs.
No definitely not
they have amazing chemistry, effort and relentlessly attack the basket.
Serious aligning of the stars.
you mean a lineup of
Miller
Roy (60%)
Batum (shoulder)
Howard
Camby
isn’t athletic?
"In fact you might say that Ugly is the Blazers' secret weapon this year."
-Dave
Last year's Blazers were not allowed to go to the hoop until the coach told them what play to run from the sidelines.
Really put a damper on their athletic abilities.
You're right
The personnel for the thunder are perfect to maximize their athleticism
Me too
And for what? Protecting him from some pounding against SF? It’s one of the most confusing misplacements of a player away from his natural position I’ve seen in the NBA. Durant is tall even for a SF. There was no way he would ever be a SG.
I remember all the talk about how far PJ had come on SA's bench.
And that he was ready for the next coaching job.
Of course, I also remember how unhappy I was when Portland hired him.
I removed that forum from my links a while back. HCP was the main reason to read.
It’s a tough forum to read, thanks to a small number of posters.
I remember when I did that once in a HS game
except somehow I came up with the ball. Everyone stopped because they thought I was dead. I slowly got up, the ref didn’t call traveling, and nothing was actually whistled, so I ran down and shot a 3 :-)
and missed it!...I was there

Jerryd is spending too much time listening to Nate
“Rudy is a great player,” Bayless said “He obviously didn’t start tonight, but Rudy can do a lot of things for us. Obviously, he spaces the court very well and can do some things off the dribble.”
Jerryd is perfect vs. PHX
Because he goes straight at them.

Hello ladies. Look at your man. Now look at Brandon Roy. Now back at your man. Now back to Brandon Roy. Sadly, he is not Brandon Roy.
Nope. Although he claimed before the draft he was a mix of Nowitzki, Amare and KG
Petrie believed him and traded Beaubois and a 2010 second round pick to Dallas for him
I want some photographer at that game to get me a picture of Mullens and Morrison standing next to each other
That will never happen again.

For those who aren't reading the Media Row comments
A doctor who’s also a Blazer fan came by to post his entry about Brandon Roy on his medical blog.
Wooooooooo just finished the game
I was smart today and ignored all texts. I had about 8 from before and during the game. So annoying. Everyone in my life should know without me telling them to never text me crap about games during games because I DVR so much. WHATEVER.
Everyone texted me about Roy, which was a huge surprise, and then after we win. And Tom sent me a fake text about a huge brawl and Nash died or something. I didn’t see it till just now, because I ain’t no dummy.
Fun game. Roy totally Willis Reed’d us. LMA had a game we know he can have, and I hope he can at least play NORMAL the rest of the way. We got at least 1 more at home. Play smart, play our game, hit shots we can hit, and see what happens.

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
No, Batum was right to retaliate
It’s lame he got the T, but it didn’t really hurt us and he can’t let that go. Amare is a studio gangster, a suburban poseur.
#52
Yup, Amare should have gotten a T any one of a number of points
During the game. The refs gave him a lot of slack.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
He had to be restrained by the refs several times
Including after Roy forced the jump ball.
Every call in the 4th against PHX was a cause for Amare to talk trash with our guys.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Credit to the refs though
This game could have easily gotten out of hand if they hadn’t done as good a job controlling it.

Junior guard Brandon Roy surprised both fans and the 12th-ranked North Carolina State men’s basketball team with his early return to action tonight, following a meniscus tear in his right knee that was surgically repaired on November 30. Projected to sit out 4-6 weeks, Roy came back after only 19 days on the sideline.
“The whole time I was anticipating coming back from this game, we just didn’t want to let the secret out too early,” Roy said with a smile. “I just practiced two days this week, but I was feeling good and Coach Romar told me that it was my call.”
Coach Romar echoed Roy’s feelings, saying “He was cleared to play and he felt confident in trying it out, and he played well. We didn’t know if we wanted to put him in there, but we tried it out and it worked out.”
Roy started slowly in the first half, only playing five minutes and logging one rebound.
“I was nervous before going in, and then the coaches talked me into going in. I love our fans and there is no better feeling that walking on the floor and hearing those fans cheering for you. They let me know they loved me as much as I love them.”
The slow start was over as quickly as it started, as Roy lit up the court on both sides of the ball in the second half. Shooting a perfect five-for-five from the field, Roy’s 10 points each came at clutch moments in the game. With less than three minutes remaining in the game and the Huskies holding a close 61-58 lead, Roy came out of nowhere to return a miss from Tre Simmons with a dominating dunk. His two dunks and strong inside game in the second half were key to the Huskies’ success.
“I feel great. I just want to go home and lay back and enjoy this one.”

Today, we got at least another home game, and Roy is back.
Maybe the hammy feels better now, who knows. I didn’t see it mentioned. He needs to get his conditioning back, but he got to the rim a few times and he hasn’t been doing that for a while. If he is even 85% they can’t really guard him.
I won’t expect it though… I hope we at least give ourselves a shot on Monday, and take game 6.

Only one injury allowed at a time!
It was smart to replace the hammy injury with the meniscus injury, since he knows he can recover from this surgery easily since this latest meniscus surgery makes it a baker’s dozen.
Ya push the hammy out, put in a new easier to deal with injury, and it’s KP’s best move yet.

I know others who would disagree
And that there’s difference between carrying the show, and simply being in every sketch.
I enjoy some of her stuff, and then there are skits where I wish she wasn’t there.
She was great in Ghost Town.
I really like her performance style and her herself
I greatly dislike some of the characters, or the execution of them.
The one kid character with the curly round hair who does bad things in class could be funny, and I like how the character looks, but each sketch is the same for it and it isn’t very good. GILLY, I think it is.
Plus I am so sick of the sketch where she tries to one-up everyone. I liked it the first time but I hate when they just do the same sketch but slightly different.
#52
I also loved Maya Rudolph, but not every character she plays
Will Ferrell had some reoccurring characters that weren’t great either. Everyone do.
I think she’s a real good performer on the show though.

I was tired of it for years. I enjoy it for the throwaway comedy it is again.
It’s just like how every generation thinks their SNL is the best.
They don't know what they're missing usually.
Unless they’re shown in syndication (or on hulu) and these days, only recent episodes are shown.

Yeah, I think people are usually nostalgic for the good ol' days of SNL
With everyone’s definition of good ol’ days being different.
The only firm truth is, anyone who thinks it was good in the 70s is wrong. It was awful.
And most of the 80s were awful too.
I think the two best eras are the Carvey-Hartman-Etc era in the late 80s/early 90s, and the Will Ferrell era in the late 90s and early 00s. The recent years have good moments too, but not as consistently good I’d say.
Most of the 80s and the inbetween stage of the 90s are awwwwwful.
#52
You're probably not being fair to the 70's SNL
It looks dated now, but was very, very cutting edge at the time, and spawned a number of superstars. And while there were a lot of slower segment, it was a slower period for TV shows in general, compared to the ADD formats used now.
And yeah, its a fair argument that SNL’s peak was 87-93, then the prime era of Will Farrell around 2000.
I get it was new and fresh for the time
And I respect it for that.
But watching the seasons now, it is 95% awful filler with a few classics mixed in. Very lazy and boring writing, not much laughter from the studio audience, and not much life to it.
Same as watching NBA basketball from another era, it was a different time and what was good then isn’t necessarily good now. But I think people overrate— heavily overrate— the 70s era as the good days of SNL without actually watching them since then.

The first episode I remember seeing

"We have nothing to lose." - Martell
by Cablinasian on Apr 25, 2010 12:44 AM PDT up reply actions
Just got done reading it...
Dave’s point is valid. His point is that every team has to grow, and this was the kind of game that pays long-term dividends in terms of their understanding of what’s required to succeed in the playoffs.
Right— Its one game. LA has still been horrendous in 3 of 4 games. He had a couple good games in the Houston series also. Are we to believe he all of a sudden “figured it out.” I’ll wait until he does it 2 more times, thanks.
I also think its lazy to keep talking about us like we’re super young. Our effective age is about average.
While the younger guys are getting on the job training with them.
Bayless was out there, Batum, Martell, even Roy and LMA still get more seasoning.
I think Dave’s point is that these younger (some more than others) are getting a taste of what they need to do to win in the playoffs, and that’s a good long term lesson.
Dave is bullish on our future hopes. I can’t blame him – like he’s said, if Oden just stays healthy for a year, we’re a tough team to beat.

by Cablinasian on Apr 25, 2010 12:55 AM PDT up reply actions
right, but if Oden just stays healthy, we’re a freaking awesome team. All the stuff about “the day we grew up” is winner’s history, written by the best team that year trying to make their triumph more than just being superior.
I guess what I’m saying is that the NBA champion is likely to be a team that was really good the year before. Is that because of experience? I don’t know, because there is no way to disaggregate playoff experience from talent (which is admittedly the primary reason you make it in the first place). But the Pistons won it all in ‘04, and most of them really had no substantial playoff experience. Then they were never as good again… There’s just no way to decide…
I think experience matters to a degree. Look at our performances on the road this year as opposed to last season; Andre knew that he had to be aggressive early in games, and that was a key.
#52

HIGHLY overrated
esp experience losing.. for every player you can find that seems to benefit from the experience of losing in the playoffs you can find another who is just a loser in the playoffs..

Yeah, it matters
But being good matters more.
Good players still need that experience of the playoffs though.
10 years of playoffs for a dude won’t magically make him just better than someone who is normally good. It still boils down to being gooder overall.
#52
Rasheed had tons of substantial playoff experience
There were a number of analysts who said his arrival made a huge difference to that team, because he knew what it takes to win, and how you can lose, in the playoffs.
He was also crucial to their frenetic style of trapping defense, and added skilled length…
You could never disaggregate Rasheed’s skill contributions from his experience contributions. And a lot of those same analysts would have said he’s not a “winner” in 2002—he “didn’t have what it takes.” Well, that was a bunch of hooey until he quit trying and became a garbage player last year for DET and this year for BOS.
Oh I know.
But we can’t ignore that the Detroit championship team had players with significant playoff experience.
sure, sheed did
but the other key contributors were Billups, Hamilton, Prince and B. Wallace. That championship didn’t have any sort of galvanizing effect on those guys—Billups is now considered an awesome leader and point guard while the others have sort of gone on to have mediocre careers.
I guess the DET example is interesting because it’s a rare case where a team very suddenly won the championship, then didn’t do it again (although they were excellent and made the finals)..
Yeah but I don't hold it against them to not win a second one
Winning one championship is a rarity that many towns wait decades for. Detroit made multiple ECF’s and multiple Finals, winning one. That’s pretty much the definition of NBA success. It could be argued that all those future appearances were the fruit born of the championship victory, which could have been due to the arrival of a player with playoff experience.
Or it was all random, and they were simply good during a down period in the East. Which is a very reasonable explanation.
no neither do i
It’s just they are sort of one of a kind. The other champions in the last 10 years have been dynasties (Spurs/Lakers) or played unmentionably bad ball (Heat) or have purchased experience (Celts). So the Pistons are just a way to reflect on theories about how teams can win without a ton of experience going deep in the playoffs.
We have the most interesting conversations in the JD
Even when a dedicated thread about the topic is next door. It’s so easy to fall into patterns.
I guess. I just think its ridiculous to circle this one game as the day “we grew up.” Makes no sense. How is this win appreciably different from game 2 or 5 last year?
I would like to see you and Dave go back and forth on this; bring it up in the chat that is hopefully coming tomorrow night.

Its a big win
But I agree he’s going a bit over the top.
This becomes a HUGE win if/when we win this series.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I agree.
It takes a lot of these kind of wins to “grow up”. It’s a bit much to say that one game would change this team.
Straight Independent.
I would like to see us at least force a game where PHX is at risk of elimination
Games where your opponent has a chance to have their season ended are something different entirely in a series that goes this long.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
it needs to be said that a lot of teams in that position quit and start planning vacations. Getting blown out twice, and then responding with a knock-down drag out fight was a very good sign. A sign that we’ve arrived? No. But a sign that we’re getting tougher mentally, yeah.
I liked Dave’s post, and told him so. We saw a lot of good for LMA tonight. Am I worried about him long term? Heck yeah. But I’m more hopeful about him not choking as a third option going forward. He is so awful as a first option.

we very likely lose this game without the emotional boost from Roy. If we win game 5 after that emotional boost is gone, I’ll be a lot more impressed.
that's a bingo
taking this to 7 games would be huge for the future. Not as huge as winning game 7 and not as huge as winning game 5 and game 6, but huge nonetheless.
"In fact you might say that Ugly is the Blazers' secret weapon this year."

another win on the road
yes, that would be very impressive no matter what state the team is in.

I’d be very surprised if we go into Phoenix and beat them with mediocre Brandon. I’m still impressed by today and the resolve they showed. It was a fun day.

But then again
This team has surprised us all year.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
it’s gotten to the point where I expect wins where we should lose and expect losses when we should win. This team is nuts.

I'd be worried in any case
But I’m not that worried, after today I’m okay with whatever happens.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I was okay with anything last season ... this year I want us to win that home game even though it will be tough.
Straight Independent.
I think we will of course
The team knows that if they bring it, we’re there 100%.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Yeah it was big day in Blazerland.
I’m not worried about the less happy topics today. They’ll still be here after the season.
i have only seen a couple sketches
but it seems precious the actress based off the book push by Sapphire is kinda crummy at this. Very little comedic range or any range it seems
I seemed to be the only one not enjoying this week's episode
I figured I was just in a bad mood and didn’t realize it. I got a couple good chuckles during the news and that covered it, though I missed the first 10 minutes.
SNL is not consistently good any more
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
That's another thing that gets misremembered
It is practically never consistently good, which I say is because of the style and format of the show. There will always be duds that we forget and just remember the good stuff.

Watching “The Empire Strikes Back.” Han Solo just said “Never tell me the odds!” Makes me think of the Blazers.

fantastic
the team always gives me heart attacks with those extended stretches of bad offense and end game strategy, but it was very satisfying

Cool. How does Brandon look?

He's enough of a threat to distract the Suns defenders
which is about 10 times what Rudy was giving us

But not much really and he really did a good job of not doing anything he couldn’t do.

The three he hit to put us up 6 in the fourth
Was classic Brandon, as was the cross-over jumper he hit later.
But the 3 was pure Brandon Roy “Stone Cold Killer” style.

Mmmmmmmmm. Been missin that. I hear that LMA was also kinda clutch.

well, he did shoot 12 free throws. Other than that, they were mostly jumpers, with a few nice lobs from Dre. The key to his game was drawing contact and making long 2s. He made quite a few down the stretch of hte game.

Sheeminey
In the first half, OKC generated 0.51 free-throw attempts for every field-goal attempt. In the third quarter that number spiked to 0.71, which is utterly ridiculous. Yes, the Thunder were aggressive, and no, the Lakers weren’t paragons of positional defensive technique. Events on the court, however, in no way justified a second straight game of gargantuan free-throw disparities. This was the work of a heroic OKC crowd and officials who allowed themselves to be swayed by them.

Nope.
“The fans were so loud that the referees just ceded to their might!” is an insane conclusion to a foul call disparity.
What was the FT disparity about anyways?

Didn't see the game.
I presume it was partially laziness on Lakers D, and partially the fact that OKC notoriously gets lots of FT’s.
I watched the first half
And that was it. Durant and Westbrook were just destroying a lazy LA D.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
the Laker fans should realize that OKC hasn’t even played their best ball in this series. LA has been absolutely awful for stretches. They can’t make a shot.

i mean, come on!!!
this excuse is so weak. your teammates are battling tooth and nail, and this is the best you come up with?!
Oden is gone with Blazer management’s blessing. The thinking was, when he is around his teammates and not playing, Oden takes it hard. He is better off being at a distance from all the action.
I have a lot of grace for Greg, seeing as he was the only Blazer that gave a crap for the first quarter of the year. I’m not worried about his mental state.

whatever the guy has to do to get right is fine with me. If it causes him to miss his timeline or play poorly or get hurt again, let me know.
It's all about the playoffs.
The Spurs like to coast during the regular season and it’s worked out OK for them.

ok, everyone go watch this video. HD quality of the run and then Roy entering the game. Wow.
I love our chants. We may not be the loudest crowd, but the coordination is incredible.
Also, the KGW broadcast has the crowd super loud and it’s fun to hear the Mikes get so excited.

And when Bayless hit the three, I didn't even realize it.
I was busy watching Roy, and had to ask who made the shot.
Team KP
it was much louder in there than it seemed in the video. that crowd had a huuuuuuge pop.

It depends on Roy.
He really changes the matchup situation. Everyone is a little more free (especially Aldridge) since they can’t double off Rudy.
I could see us losing or taking the next two with relative ease. Who knows.
by Nick Van Excellent on Apr 25, 2010 1:47 AM PDT up reply actions
Yea ... even him just being on the court increases our odds due to the attention that he demands.
It’s pretty shocking how we can go from hoping for a game 6 to hoping for a series win.
by iHATEcommies on Apr 25, 2010 1:51 AM PDT up reply actions
They would be stupid to leave him open.
The Suns can live with Bayless shooting jumpers and Rudy is barely even trying, so Roy really does change everything.
A three guard lineup of Miller, Bayless, Roy is really going to be a handful next year. We will march our way to the freethrow line all game long.

Awe, I'm at work
A company just called in to say that someone deleted the PVC from the virtual circuit and I can’t find their information in BAIS. It’s lame. I’m sure it’s going to get escalated and we have an ASAM out.
it was so amazing.....ahhhhh
I can’t believe he could play after such a short recovery time!!!!
what bout you?
I was happy
I don’t know if I’ve ever had chills from watching sports. I was happy to see a leader on the floor again. I just can’t help but feel that all Roy did was postpone the inevitable.
As much as I want the Blazers to be in the Finals, I have absolutely zero faith in the Blazers starting point guard helping to get the Blazers out of the first round. I actually feel he is a detriment to the team still expect him to cause the Blazers to lose. He kind of ruins everything for me.
