Hollinger on Rudy
As if we need more analysis and discussion of Rudy Fernandez's woes, John Hollinger devotes his entire Per Diem to Rudy.
It's on "insider", but this will give you the gist of it:
That talent has been apparent at times during the past two seasons, but not lately. Tuesday night's five-point, two-assist performance didn't include a field goal in Fernandez's 28 minutes, and that's par for the course since Roy went out. Fernandez played 37 minutes against the Lakers and scored just nine points in that April 11 game. In the four games since, he's yet to reach double figures in points despite being the Blazers' primary shooting guard and playing 157 of a possible 240 minutes.
Fernandez has been the Invisible Man, and the totals are train-wreck bad: 36 points, 10-of-30 shooting and -- get this -- just six 2-point field goal attempts in five games. He's been strictly a spot-up shooter, and not an accurate or threatening one.

where in the world is rudy fernandez?
I’m hoping for a big game 3 from rudy. I can’t see nate changing his lineup now, but we will see. it seems like rudy isn’t even on the court at times.

I would be fine with this
marty has been intense, he is not really a 2 though

except he was drafted to be a 2

he was drafted when he was a high-schooler
since then, Martell has put on weight and muscle. He plays like a forward and he defends the perimeter…like a forward. He rebounds like a forward and he’s scrappy like a forward
shooting guards need to have better court vision than Marty has shown. Yes, he can dribble twice and finish. But he can’t bring the ball upcourt against pressure. He doesn’t look for his teammates in any creative kind of way off the dribble. He’s not a backup 2
Batum is a much better candidate to play backup SG than Webster. They could both play alongside Miller and get by. But if you put Bayless-Batum-Webster out there at the 1-2-3 you’ll have troubles against a decent defense

marty would do a better job on jefferson than either rudy ( too weak) or bayless ( too short)

Jefferson?
I think you meant Richardson

Assuming Batum can go...
Putting Martell at SG and on J-Rich makes WAY more sense than keeping Rudy out there. At this point Martell has proven to be more aggressive on both the offensive and defensive ends than Rudy. Having Fernandez play w/ the second unit alongside Bayless makes much more sense to me…but who am I?

This has not been a particularly productive guard combo, since the Camby trade

rudy has not a particularly product guard

Rudy will want to go the way of his buddy Sergio, to New York or go back home.
Rudy doesn’t particularly like playing half-court offense or getting to the rim unless it’s a fast break situation so NY is perfect for him.
He’s still an asset so we should be able to get a nice draft pick for him at the very least.
I love Rudy. I really thought he was going to come here and be another Manu but his knack for avoiding physical play has made him into a bit of a one-trick pony.

this is true, but he and Jerryd were inconsistent at best during the regular season
without Roy, I’d rather they each play with Miller and not together
If Batum’s healthy, I’d take my chances with Bayless-Batum-Webster at the 1-2-3 when Andre needs a blow. Leave Rudy on the bench to ponder his future plans

What a difference a year makes
I remember people clammering for Rudy to start in the Houston series last year, now everyone wants to see less of him.
I don’t know why he can’t seem to step up – maybe it is a system thing. I like his game but it is not suited for PTB ball.
Hopefully he hasn’t completely ruined his trade value and he can be shipped to a team that is a better fit and we will get something of value in return.
"What we have here, is a failure to communicate."
Perhaps ...
… Nate is starting him in hopes he breaks out of it, builds his trade value, then gives us options this summer?
thank you, Paul Allen
KP had a deal for Rudy all set up, but the owner let his personal feelings for #5 get in the way of impartial roster management

we probably don't want to know
Jason Filippi was the source, the Marca article was in March, so I assume the offer was put together last February and presented to Allen, and he gave it a thumb’s down because of his man-love for #5

it is not just that
his contract is small as well, most deals would not work with his contract…
"Oh Yeah!" ~ Kool Aid Man
it could've been combined with another salary
there’s no way we’ll ever learn the details, other than there was a deal in place and Paul said no. Filippi said the owner considered Fernadez to be “untradeable…like Brandon Roy”

I think we need to remember
That Rudy had back surgery early in the season. I would guess that he still isn’t ready to fully trust it, and that has to be affecting his play. I really hope he can get himself out of this for next season.

come on...
he had back surgery in december.
stop trying to make excuses for why he is terrible

He hasn't been terrible
He’s been terribly inconsistent. He had one stretch that was possibly the best of his career. He’s hit a stretch that is arguably the worst. That could go back to the surgery, or there might be a different reason. Whatever it is, I really hope he finds his way out of it.

I think you're right, but thae back is just small part of Rudy's situation in Portland.
These things are obvious:
He misses home.
He doesn’t particularly like the current system.
He’s not big on Portland weather.
Feels he deserves to start for whichever team he plays on.
Now I can’t fault him for thinking any of those things – but as long as he stays in Portland, non of these issues will be rectified – thus, no change in his overall situation.

He's stated repeatedly that his back is fine

I had the same surgery in February
While I say my back is “fine”, I’m still far from back to pre injury mobility or strength. I’m back to playing ball now, but I’m not confident.
Then again, my job doesn’t revolve around my physical conditioning. I’m sure his recovery isn’t helping him any.

He just hasn't played like the same person as this time last year
He has been INVISIBLE since Roy went down, which is when you’d expect him to take hold of the opportunity at SG.
Holding out for Hedo

I rec this

I think Roy should start.
He makes the most sense.
Slim chance having Roy, slim chance of Round 2. And that makes my heart ache.
Well, Rudy has no reason to talk for saying he deserves more minutes if he's going to play like he has.
Put up or shut up.
"Ain't nothin' in this world for free."
I don't have insider...
Did Hollinger provide any suggestions? What should Rudy and, more importantly, the Blazers do?
He recommends that Rudy attack more
“he has to be more aggressive in getting to the basket.” And he thinks Rudy can do it against Nash and Barbosa.
He doesn’t offer many suggestions for the Blazers/Nate… mostly the message seems to be: “Carpe Diem, Rudy.”
Yup.
And he should stop shooting those weak runners.
Keep your expectations low and you won't be disappointed.
ack, "reads Bedge"
I also figure he’s a jersey contest junky.

What do you think the odds are
That Rudy is traded for a draft pick(s) this summer and the Blazers resign Blake. This playoff series aside, Rudy has not looked good for a while and would likely do better on another team that suited his style better. Think if we were starting Blake right now in Roy’s absence as opposed to Rudy…

Blake would help the team right now by being the backup PG, IMO.
Although you may be right. we’ll never know :(

Steve was the difference in the win at Phoenix, right before the all-star break
24 points, shot the lights out. I think that was his last game before the trade

I'm hoping the Blazers can do better with their MLE than Steve
Like…Ray Allen? Now we’re talking!
