Steve Blake Triple Double!

Congrats to steve blake on his first (?) career triple double, wish him the best even though he no longer plays for the blazers. Although its against the L*kers who didnt have anything to play for, still a nice job to finish the season for him.Travis and Blake got the start in the last regular season game for the Clippers and L*kers.

Still miss his 3s in blazers uniform :(

Yeah, me too!

Especially is BRoy really can’t play in the Playoffs … let Bayless back up Rudy for a short a time as possible and Blake would’ve kept things under control so Miller could have a proper rest. Miller’s gonna be sitting for 10 minutes if he’s very lucky.

Watching Patty turn the ball over was not pleasant either.

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

It's impossible to judge Mills yet.

He’ll definitely need more time to adjust to the NBA level of play, but I think based on his dominance in the D-League that he’s worthy of some minutes and hopefully he develops. Loved watching him shred the ducks in college—now only if he can do that against the lakers…

by ArbyOSU on Apr 15, 2010 11:34 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't know that D-League performance is all that good of an indicator.

Look at Tolliver.

Sure he has NBA level talent. But he also has significant non-NBA holes in his game. He can score and is a decent rebounder, but who is he going to stop.

No knock on Mills. But the fact he may be all world D-League doesn’t mean he is a good bet to crack a regular rotation, let alone be a starter.

What does Steve playing well in an otherwise meaningless game have to do with Jerryd?

I am glad Steve played well, but Jerryd is playing within the parameters that he is given by the coaching staff. It is a team game. The Blazers play a winning style as compared to the Clippers or the Warriors for that matter. Just maybe, less is more in Jerryd’s case?

Steve Blake played well here too

I agree with one interpretation of your point – Jerryd Bayless is not a good fit for what he is being asked to do.

He is being asked to do what the coaching staff thinks the team needs from him.

Ergo, Jerryd Bayless is not a good fit for what the coaching staff thinks the team needs.

This should be addressed in the off-season. For now, I’ll just cross my fingers whenever he has the ball and hope for the best. The coaching staff obviously has more confidence in his decision-making and execution than I do, or he would get even fewer minutes. The playoffs has no back to back games, so I expect his minutes to drop significantly.

by baduk on Apr 15, 2010 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Jerryd's fit factor is in question...

Yet is was Steve who was shipped out, and it is quite likely that he is not coming back.

One of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to the evaluation of any player on our team is who is he playing with primarily and what role is he being asked to play in that group. I don’t care for stats taken out of context. Apples and oranges comparisons don’t hold a lot of water with me. Steve played most of his minutes here with Roy and Aldridge on the floor—Bayless not so much. Jerryd mostly gets Juwan and Rudy—a much different proposition!

It's like Jermaine O'Neal all over again!

"[S]ince men enjoyed very great leisure, they used it to pursue many kinds of commodities unknown to their fathers, and that was that first yoke they placed upon themselves without thinking about it, and the first source of evils the prepared for their descendants. For, besides continuing thus to soften body and mind, as these commodities had lost almost all their pleasantness through habit, and as they had at the same time degenerated into true needs, being deprived of them became much more cruel than possessing them was sweet; and people were unhappy to lose them without being happy to have them." -Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Every time people start talking about Steve Blake ....

… we get an excellent example of how little folks know about basketball and players.

Steve Blake is not some slow, unathletic whit guy who can’t jump, can’t defend opposing guards and whose only talent is occassionally hitting an outside shot.

At 6-3 he has good size for a PG. He has pretty decent quickness and strength. MOre importantly, Blake has intelligence and discipline. It is those latter two that account for some of the things you didn’t often see out of him.

Steve Blake fully understood what his coach wanted. Both from his team and his PG. And that is exactly what Blake tried to give him. Yes, Blake’s strength is not driving to the rim. That doesn’t mean he can’t. It means he understands that the percentages favor Brandon Roy doing that and Blake being an outlet to spread the court.

The truth is that Blake is a fine PG and NBA player. Good enough to start on at least a third of the teams in the league. Portland is less without him. That said, the Blazers need Marcus Camby far more than Steve Blake right now. That’s no knock on Blake. Only a reflection of POrtland’s loss of big men.

Clarence, It's better to have a gun and not need it, then need a gun and not have it.

by timg56 on Apr 15, 2010 7:41 AM PDT reply actions

This statement explains both sides of this conversation.
Good enough to start on at least a third of the teams in the league.

And this reality check comes from an obvious Steve Blake backer. Steve is who he is. Bayless is who he is. They are no longer teammates. They each must rise or fall based on their own merits. It would be nice if people would stop comparing them—Bayless is the Blazer, like him or not.

by KINGofMACct on Apr 15, 2010 8:32 AM PDT up reply actions

You will note I didn't make any comparison?

I agree that liking one player and thinking he should be on the team does not require trashing another and arguing he should be traded.

Clarence, It's better to have a gun and not need it, then need a gun and not have it.

by timg56 on Apr 15, 2010 3:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, I saw that and appreciated it

I will root for Steve wherever he plays. I was one of those guys who wanted Portland to sign him after his stint in Denver.

But, with that being said, it is time for Bayless to step up or step out. We, the Blazers, need to see what we have while relying on Bayless for wins and losses—sink or swim. Blake had his day here, now it is time to see what we still have or what we still need.

I don’t see all of the Blake comparisons as being anything more than a subset of fans expressing their need to be, “smart guys.”

Steve is not good enough to start for 10 teams, not even close

Paul/Collison
Nash
D. Williams
Rondo
Billups/Lawson
Rose
Evans
Miller
Westbrook
Jennings/Ridnour
Baron
Kidd
Calderon
Lou Williams
Parker
Curry
Harris
Brooks
Mo Williams
Nelson
Stuckey
Felton
Conley
Bibby

All those guys are better than Blake and I easily could have included 5-10 more names.

by jksnake99 on Apr 15, 2010 10:28 AM PDT up reply actions

Some of those guys are not better.

Ridnour
Calderon
Williams, L.
Nelson
Stuckey
Felton

Some of them are not PG’s (and or are only “better” if all you are looking for is scoring)
Evans
Williams, M.

And some of the young guys on the list may end up as better players, but it certaintly isn’t true that they can run a team any better than Blake.
Collison
Lawson
Conley

And if you want Baron Davis as your PG ahead of Steve Blake, you are more than welcome to him.

The rest – how many of them are not just lottery picks, but high lottery?
Paul
Williams, D.
Rose
Evans
Westbrook
Jennings
Kidd
Curry
Harris

One would expect them to be better than a late second round pick.

Clarence, It's better to have a gun and not need it, then need a gun and not have it.

I also miss Channing Frye. He was a fun guy, and I liked listening to his radio show. It will be interesting to see how he reacts to facing the Blazers in the playoffs.

by Cepstrum on Apr 15, 2010 10:32 AM PDT reply actions

can we try to sign Blake?

To me #1 off-season priority is to try to keep Camby.

Could the Blazers also go after Blake or does the cap limit preclude that? Maybe we could get him on a mid-level exception.

I would then trade Bayless for whatever we can get for him and try to see if Mills can be developed into an NBA player in summer league and preseason assuming Blazers can keep him on the roster. (is he a free agent this summer? If so I would bet there are a few teams out there that would love to snap him up and try to develop him as a PG.)

by lsjogren on Apr 15, 2010 1:12 PM PDT reply actions

it could be done

although I’d argue that it shouldn’t be a priority

The mid-level exception is 5.8 mil. Is that too much for a backup PG of Blake’s talent? I’d say probably so, he’s worth more in the 3-3.5 mil/year range

If Steve was back on the roster would Nate be tempted to play #2 more than he should? Probably so

If Camby is signed for 7 mil (and the draft choices are also signed) Portland will be up against the luxury tax threshold. That means the MLE will cost double against the cap.

Is adding Blake (or any potential FA) to the roster worth 10+ mil to Paul Allen and the Vulcans?

(Answer: I don’t know, but the team’s success in the post seaason could factor in, increased revenue from 2nd round home playoff games and Blazer merchandise sales could lead to increased summer spending)

Would Steve accept the BAE (2.08 mil) to return to PDX? Dude just put up a triple-double, he’s gotta be worth more to somebody than the lousy BAE…right?

Blake would be a great guy to have right now. Next fall? That depends. I’m not sold on Bayless as the PGOTF but I aso think that if Allen is willing to allow Rudy to be dealt away this summer, then there could be a place for Steve as a swing guard who could play alongside Roy or Miller, with Bayless perhaps also picking up some combo guard minutes.

Do I think that this will happen? Not really, but it could be done
