Here's what I'm rooting for ...
1. Roy's knee is OK.
2. We win out, earning the 6 seed.
3. Dallas wins out, earning the 2 seed.
4. Phoenix wins out, earning the 3 seed (they play Den, @Utah to finish).
5. We play and beat Phoenix in the first round.
6. We play and beat the winner of Dallas-OKC/SA in the second round.
7. LA, Denver, Utah, and OKC/SA beat each other up in the other series.
8. We play the last team standing for the WCFinals. Sick.
Of course, now that I've imagined/written it, there's no way it's going to happen.

Wait a sec ...
Do the matchups reshuffle after the first round based on record? So we would need to hope for a lower seed to advance in round 1?
"These are dreams that we have." --Rudolfo Fernandez
no
matchups never reshuffle in the NBA. winner of 1/8 plays winner of 4/5 and winner of 2/7 plays winner of 3/6

If Dallas and Phoenix get the 2 and 3 seeds,
it would be possible for us to reach the WCF. Still highly unlikely, but it’d be possible. We wouldn’t have homecourt, but we’re 3-1 in Dallas and Phoenix this year, with the one loss being that game in Phoenix a few weeks ago I felt we should have and could have won.
Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!
Yes, we had a chance in that one.
Would have been nice to punctuate our season series against Dallas the other night.

not
division winners are guaranteed homecourt, but can be 4th if another team has a better record. They can’t lose a tie breaker except to another division winner
"Oh Yeah!" ~ Kool Aid Man
Division winners are only guaranteed a top 4 seed.
If Phoenix wins out, they’ll have a better record than both Denver and Utah, because they play Denver and Utah in their last 2 games. So they will get the 3 seed, and whoever wins the NW will get the 4 seed.
"These are dreams that we have." --Rudolfo Fernandez
seriously?
I didn’t think winning the division guaranteed you anything but a tie-breaker. I mean, I know for a fact that division-winner is the first tie breaker for seeding, and I’m pretty sure (but may very well be wrong) that they changed the rules for seeding so that it is strictly based on win-loss record (except for ties). So you could conceivably have a 1-4 seeding of L*L, Denver, Utah, and Phoenix with the SW winner in the bottom four. Or maybe I’m misunderstanding you and that’s exactly what you’re saying. I’m confused…
not quite
the top 4 seeds must represent the 3 division winners and the team with the best record of those remaining. so in the situation you just described. the 5th best team would jump the 4th best team. i don’t believe this has ever actually happened.
the rule which made it so the top 3 seeds weren’t division winners went into effect in 2007 i believe.
I might be silly here, but I think Utah lacks the talent to get past PDX
When Portland comes to play, well, ask LA.
Utah has the size to give Portland fits
in the playoffs, size (and feistiness) trumps talent, if all else is equal
and don’t underestimate Sloan>McMillian
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
I like your prediction
And I saw a slap-chop commercial for the first time in months right when I read this, and to me, that is one incredible omen.
The best possible outcome for Portland...
Round 1: LA/ SA… DEN/ OKC… DAL/ POR… PHO/ UTA… LA wins in seven long and brutal games, Oklahoma City upsets a woeful Denver team, Portland upsets Dallas, and Phoenix takes care of Utah.
Round 2: LA/ PHO… OKC/ POR… LA gets upset by Phoenix, Portland beats Oklahoma City…
Round 3: PHO / POR… Portland beats Phoenix.
I honestly think that the best thing for Portland would be to avoid Denver and Utah. And, I think that Oklahoma could upset Denver and Phoenix could take down Utah and LA…

ya know
when you guys lay these out like this it really gets me to start believing that there’s a chance that we could get there…..LETS DO THIS!!…..Vulcan’s or no Vulcan’s
if you imagine or write something it cant happen?
then why not do the opposite? write something like la will win 82 games and they win 0. your going to get every number wrong in the next powerball drawing, etc..

This is the dream scenario
One thing is for sure, the blazers need to stay out of the 1/8, 4/5 side of the bracket to have any sort of chance to make a run. Gotta beat OKC tonight.
Where's Rudolfo?
I'm hoping we lose tonight.
I’d like to see a Blazers/Lakers series. Although the Laker’s late season swoon is probably going to reverse itself in the playoffs, I think it’s about as winnable as any other series, and I’d rather maneuver to avoid Utah (who could be anywhere from 2 to 5 depending mostly on their final game against Phoenix) than maneuver to avoid LA. The one spot we know we definitely won’t draw Utah is in the 8 seed. Money.

Plus, how much sweeter would a 8 versus 1
upset of the Lakers be than a 6 or 7 versus 2 or 3 upset of Dallas or Phoenix or whoever. They’d still have 2000, but we could point at 2010 forever.

and as a fan of good basketball even without considering my rooting interests,
I can’t imagine anything that could be more fun than a first round that includes: LA v. PDX, UT v. OKC, and PHX v. DAL. Would be the capper on a great great regular season that featured some of the best games I’ve seen in years between exactly those pairings.

Agreed.
If Portland can’t pull Phoenix or Dallas in the first round, I’d much rather see them play the L@kers than Denver or Utah.
Of your picks I’d rather see Utah play Denver, not OKC. I think that would be a better series.
