Not in a heartbeat

Roy’s personality and ability as a leader is much more difficult to find than rookie sensation numbers. Remember, Roy was Rookie of the Year as well, and his rookie season we had no idea of the possible future injury problems. Could be the same for Evans.

by GiantBlazer on Mar 9, 2010 6:37 PM PST up reply actions

yeah but roy didnt average what evans has in his rookie season, tyreke's is equal or better

to roy right now except scoring a 1.5 points less or so and a worse 3 point percentage but he will improve that in the summer. tyreke has much less miles than brandon roy and may coincide better with the development of greg. I really dont know about tyreke’s personality but as we all know personalities is not what bring championships. As long as a player isnt a punk that is fine by me.

by tevisthe4th on Mar 9, 2010 6:44 PM PST up reply actions

While I agree personalities don't bring championships,

Leadership does. If Tyreke shows the ability to lead in the next year or two, then I’ll jump on the Evans is better than Roy table. However, Brandon Roy brings a hugely needed ability to lead this team, both on and off the court. Every championship team has had both a great coach, and at least one great player leading their team. Speaking primarily of this decade, San Antonio has had Duncan, Boston has Garnett, LA has Kobe, Chicago had Jordan. Not only were these players often the best player skill-wise on their teams, they had the necessary ability to keep their teammates’ heads in the game. It’s clear Roy has a special ability to lead his teammates, and down the line, this is going to be key to any championship the Blazers hope for.
Of course this is just my two cents.

Cake or Death?

by GiantBlazer on Mar 9, 2010 6:51 PM PST up reply actions

and roy also was injured his rookie season, only played 57 games

I dunno roy is great but dont get me wrong but im sure evans can be as good of a leader as roy. Once roy leads this team to a championship (like all the other players you mention) in the next year or two, then ill jump on the roy is better than Evans table.
I think the exceeding of expectations for the kings this season can speak to the leading potential tyreke has shown as a rookie.
But yeah right now Ill take roy, but since we are not winning a ship this season, i would look at reke for the future if it was a possibility.

by tevisthe4th on Mar 9, 2010 6:58 PM PST up reply actions

is that a serious question?

by Ottergoat on Mar 9, 2010 6:14 PM PST via mobile reply actions

I’d rather trade Bayless/Rudy for Tyreke, and trade Martel for a Big Mac.

by Ottergoat on Mar 9, 2010 6:22 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Reke has similar numbers to Roy but he is only a rookie younger and probably less injury prone

Landry I would say has a lower ceiling than aldridge but he has shown he can get it done in the 4th quarter and is not soft. Lma has better averages but plays more mins as well.

by tevisthe4th on Mar 9, 2010 6:25 PM PST up reply actions

It wouldn't be a good trade.

No. It doesn’t make sense to trade a star for a potential star. Even if Tyreke ends up being as good as Roy, you still have team chemistry issues. I’d only trade Roy if he was at the end of a contract and wanted out – just to salvage trade value. I might consider trades for LeBron or someone at that level, but Tyreke?

by Y5k on Mar 9, 2010 6:54 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Roy isn't selfish

he is following Nate’s game plan. I agree that Nate’s game plan includes too many isolation plays for Roy and doesn’t take advantage of a really talented roster. If Nate opened up the game even Roy would get better shots, but that’s Nate’s game.

by Tim Tim on Mar 9, 2010 7:01 PM PST up reply actions

I’d hoped that was a tounge-in-cheek comment. If the pressure is off Roy to be the primary scorer in a desperate situation, he is an excellent and prolific passer. When his team’s back is against the wall, it drops off, naturally, because he’s pushing too hard.

Side convo

If we’re in need of a C next year, would Ronny Turiaf be a good target? I can see GS drafting big with their ‘10 lottery pick and wanting to shed him, so we probably wouldn’t have to give up much. He’d give us solid post defense at a reasonable price.

by ucla139 on Mar 9, 2010 7:06 PM PST reply actions

I think much of the BE community would love to get Turiaf

The question is how? He’s fairly in demand, so we’d have to give to get.

Still on the Rex bandwagon.

by dan_the_man on Mar 9, 2010 7:09 PM PST up reply actions

I'm new here so I'm unsure of the commonly accepted opinions

But the NBA Trade Machine has a Martell-for-Turiaf swap being of equal value for both sides with the money lining up as well. Then we can either shift Dante to the 3 or use our draft pick on one of the many swingmen that would be available at #18/19 (James Anderson, Paul George, others)

It's amazing how important our bench has been the last few games.

Even the loss at Denver would have been much worse if it weren’t for the bench. Maybe we’re seeing that “overly deep” bench we were so worried about in the beginning of this season.

Yeah, but we’d be better off if we could cash in some of that overly deep bench to make it so our starters could keep up with Denver (not that this is possible, but the fact that they were able to drill us with Johan Petro and Anthony Carter playing big minutes shows that it really is your top 4 guys who are the key).

but Carmelo was getting calls for Batum breathing in his direction

hard to argue

It’s just Melo was obviously being mollycoddled by the refs… and when he didn’t get a call he moaned about it just like Briant does… makes me mad…

"In order to keep a true perspective of one's importance, everyone should have a dog that will worship him and a cat that will ignore him."

by bow4meow on Mar 9, 2010 8:20 PM PST up reply actions

That is an incredibly misleading stat.

KD averages a total of 0.1 FT attempts more than Carmelo. at 9.9 and 9.8 they are 3rd and 4th behind Lebron and Howard. That is attempts. KD is a better FT shooter, but they get the same number of calls.

by jnewhouse on Mar 9, 2010 8:20 PM PST up reply actions

the point still being

these prima donnas have the refs in their back pockets

"In order to keep a true perspective of one's importance, everyone should have a dog that will worship him and a cat that will ignore him."

by bow4meow on Mar 9, 2010 8:22 PM PST up reply actions

Even as attempts, Carmelo has 124 more attempts.

Does that simply mean that he gets more of his calls when they’re in the penalty?

That doesn’t make it any better.

by Timmay! on Mar 9, 2010 8:22 PM PST up reply actions

Wait, you were talking about attempts, not fouls, my bad.

How does 124 FTA difference add up to such a small difference in attempts per game? I haven’t run the numbers yet.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
