Brandon talks about his desire to play for Team USA if the opportunity presents itself...I've thought for a long time he would be great on our national team so this is welcomed news!

For those without Insider, quick snippet:

"I still hope so," Roy told FanHouse about playing in the London Olympics. " ... If there's a chance, I'm healthy and playing well and somebody can't play that year, you never know what happens. I would love to try to play. If they are looking for a reserve, I would raise my hand and say, 'Here I am.' I would love to try then if the opportunity presents itself."

I, for one, would rather he didn’t. I picture a season where he’s never really healthy and battling nagging injuries from over-exertion….. oh wait…..

Yeah, Roy is the last guy who should consider this

To his credit, he reportedly focused on low-impact exercise this past off season. And he STILL has had overuse injury issues. Playing year-round? That’s not in the cards for Brandon.

I was born in '52, and I believe in #52. Hang in there, GO.
You too, Przy: everyone knows you're the heart & soul of the Blazers.

Agreed

I’m a greedy Portland fan, I want Roy fully healthy for Portland’s championship seasons. Team USA can win gold without him

It was great rooting for Clyde in ‘92, and if LMA or Greg get the chance then by all means let them play (a little leery re: Oden, but I expect his injury troubles will “go away” with time, like Bowie’s did) But Roy can’t keep his legs injury-free as it is. He should stay home and off the BB court during the summer

I think he should go for it

If I were an NBA star, I’d want to play for Team USA. Winning a gold medal would mean as much, if not more, as a Championship ring to me.
I think if you are an athelete in a sport that is part of the Olympic games, you’d be a fool not wanting to be a part of it.

I agree.

If I was Brandon, there would be no way I could NOT go for it.

Does nobody here care about international play?

I keep reading comments from “greedy” Portland fans who don’t want him to over-exert himself. Don’t you want Roy to add a gold medal to his resume before his career is over? Who knows if he’ll ever get a championship for Portland?

Go for it.

A summer off is overrated. Roy started slow because he didn’t play any basketball over the summer. Most guys play basketball one way or the other between seasons, it might as well be with team U.S.A. It’s not like Roy has had no problems because of the summer off.

I would support and be excited to see Brandon join the team.

Maybe i'm being selfish

But i’d love to watch BRoy play basketball year round.

by moflow on Mar 8, 2010 5:21 PM PST reply actions

yeah....

but if tried to play year round, he might break down and only play for less than half a year…..

...and that's the bottom line 'cause nicolas batum said so!

Ironic

last month, Bedgers were crawling all over the Blazers for playing Roy when his hammy was tweaked, now they’re giving the thumb’s up for Brandon to hypothetically play during the summer for team USA? You can’t have it both ways

If anyone thinks that team USA will just let Roy drop in for a few months and play for a gold medal, that’s uninformed. Nowadays they want a long-term commitment from the players so they can develop chemistry and not get beat by Espana, etc. Are you all willing to watch Roy play for team USA during a non-Olympic summer, then agonize as he sits out a month during the season (again) because his knee or hamstring is sore? Not me. Discretion is the better part of valor. I want a championship (or two) in the bag for Portland before I put the possibility of ever winning one at risk by overextending Brandon. He might think he’ll be “alright” playing competitive BB during the offseason, but his recent medical history paints the opposite picture

I'm all for him joining the Olympic team

I didn’t want him playing on a bad hammy because it was bad for his health and the future of his career and beyond. I want him on the Olympic team because its an amazing opportunity that should not be spoiled by my possessiveness for a player who for the time being plays on the team that plays in the city I live in.

Brandon is a good guy and we shouldn’t stand in the way of his opportunities. Yeah, I want a ring, but if I were him I’d want a gold medal just as much.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
