Tough break for Joel.

Przybilla has player option next year he can pick up this summer. Could easily miss 41 games, triggering insurance coverage a la Raef.

That potential savings would make it even easier for KP to justify “overpaying” for Camby in July, not that he’s going to need that much incentive to persuade Paul Allen to resign Marcus

We could be talking about the "JPEC" next February

but I hope not, I’d like to eventually see Przy back in a Blazer uniform if his knee will allow it. Joel gave his heart and soul to some bad Blazer teams and he deserves to be around when they reach the finals, if at all possible

unfortunately, business is business

You don’t keep a guy around for what he HAS done, instead, you keep him around for what he IS doing and what he WILL do. For this reason, I think an aging injured center will not be tops on our list of players to keep around.

that decision won't be made until July, 2011

and a lot of things could happen in the next 16+ months

like for starters

Pryzbilla will be 16 months older, and who knows what kind of condition he’ll be in or if he’ll be able to work himself back to his pre-injury form.

by adaoh on Mar 7, 2010 3:08 PM PST up reply actions

16+ months?

Won’t be an expiring deal next year? If insurance coverage kicks in, I wouldn’t be shocked to see him get shipped to a team in need of financial relief during the season.

Right

Just like the decision on Travis and Steve was made before July, this decision could be made earlier.

Much depends on what Joel decides. If he decides he wants to put in the work, he’ll come back and be an effective player again. You can’t teach size and heart, and he has both.

But Joel strikes me as the kind of guy whose life doesn’t entirely revolve around basketball, and he and his wife may decide it isn’t worth it. We’ll see.

well the jpec wont be as valuable as rlec (obviously)

cuz its only 7.sumthin mill, instead of 11, and it doesnt have insurance covering most of it. also it wont be nearly as valuable as this season cuz this is the big free agent year, unless a couple teams wanna clear cap space for carmelo, but that would be false hope on their part, cuz hes stayin in denver.

it could still be valuable to get, say, a Devin Harris. if camby wanted to re-up with PDX to back Oden

by 64-18 on Mar 7, 2010 3:16 PM PST up reply actions

we didn't start the fire

I started hearing “let’s trade Joel” suggestions crank up the week after Portland signed Millsap to that toxic offer

between June and next February, KP will have Przy’s expiring contract (as well as Miller’s) if he wants to use them in a deal. Do I think he will? Probably not, but much will depend on how the Blazers do in the playoffs and how much heat the front office starts getting from the owner to rachet up the timetable. The time for patience and “let the cake bake” passed back on the day when the Camby trade went down.

KP’s still not likely to deal youngsters like Batum/Bayless/Rudy “straight-up” but if he thinks he can combine one of them with an EC like Joel/Andre and acquire a young veteran player who would improve the ballclub, then that’s when we could see some action.

But I agree it’s lame to talk about Przy as an asset right after he’s reinjured his knee. We should at least light a candle and have a moment of silence. Like I wrote above ^ I’m hopeful that we haven’t seen the last of #10 in a Blazer uniform

you probably were saying the same thing about Przy

when Joel was a FA back in ’06 and was getting offers from San Antonio and Detroit

when Allen and KP target a player, they have a tendency to close the deal. Fortunately, Hedo was an exception to this rule, but Turk hadn’t already been a Blazer during those negotiations

by two4larue on Mar 7, 2010 7:43 PM PST up reply actions

i don't see how the situations are at all similar

przybilla was resigning to be a starter at age 27 or so. camby is playing no more than 2 more years in the league and will have played about 25 games total for Portland.

he’s going to explore his options and i can’t imagine he won’t find something more attractive.

by colinmarsh on Mar 7, 2010 7:55 PM PST up reply actions

Portland probably offers a 3 year deal

for substantively more than MLE. We also offer a chance to play on a real contender.

I’m not sure who can offer better than that. The teams with cap space are going to be bidding for James, Wade, Bosh, Joe Johnson, Amare, Boozer, and Lee before they bid for Marcus. And some of those guys will take their time to explore options, I’m guessing, so teams won’t want to pull their offers in order to sign Camby. Few teams are going to offer him big bucks until other options have disappeared, and by then, he may have decided to take a sure thing from Portland.

I’m not sure any teams that can offer him more than MLE can also give him a chance to play on a contender and perhaps win a championship. Maybe Chicago — add Camby to that team and it would strengthen them. Maybe Miami. But those teams are looking for someone better than Marcus.

Two factors, money and a contender. I’m not sure anyone can provide both at the same level we can. That means there’s a decent chance he stays. There will certainly be other factors in his decision which could cause him to go elsewhere, but we should be able to make him a more attractive offer than at least 25 teams.

If they offer 3 years...

I sure hope they structure it like Andre’s deal or Damp’s deal so they can make him a highly trade-able asset in year 2, regardless of how he’s playing.

The Trail Blazers winning a championship must be a sign of the Apocalypse

And the injury angels are doing their best to insure that neither will happen, for if the Blazers do win another championship then surely we’re all doomed.

Must be why the centers keep getting injured. No other reason for a “curse.” Simply that humanity is loved from above.

bangers don't have to jump, so much

Joel might lose a lot of his shot-blocking ability, but if recovers enough leg stretngth to hold his position he could still be very effective as a rebounder, as well as draw charges. His latteral quickness might be affected, but that’s not as critical for a post defender as it is for a perimeter player

the chances of Joel playing NBA ball again will be dependent on how much he wants to put in the time and effort to rehab his knee. I’m sure Pryz will have the best medical advice and treatments that are available, but the final choice to retry or retire will be up to him and his doctors

You've nailed it

It’s up to him. If he decides to come back, he’ll come back and be effective. He may never be as good, but a knee doesn’t have any impact on size, anticipation, and positioning. He can still be a good backup center.

Poor Decision

Not to have immediately replaced Oden with another big when he first went down. As a result, there was too much reliance on Pryzbilla and his body was overly stressed. Unfortunately, the Blazers lost a very valuable asset. But, even worse is the fact that Pryzbilla, a true warrior, will probably have to endure a permanently debilitating injury.

dang.

Having ruptured and dislocated both of my patella’s, all I can do is pray that he is ok. I hate to say it, but if he comes back from this it’s a friggin miracle. I watched both Oden and Joel go down after I had ruptured my knee in November and I remember Joel trying to walk off the court and you could see his patella moving into his upper thigh. I can’t imagine why it would have happened again unless he didn’t give it enough rest before he started PT.

After what I’ve been through, I just don’t see how he would come back at his age and size. I really hoped he’d be OK, but this is career ending type of stuff. I really hope he gives it more time and worries more about not having to use a wheelchair at 50 yrs old. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that there is life after basketball. (I know, blasphemy)….

If you haven’t been through this, (I hope most people haven’t), this is an extremely painful injury. 5 months after surgery and 3 months of PT and I still only have 1/2 my leg strength and still have to use a cane most of the time. The last time it took @ 2 yrs to fully heal 100%. I’m not sure people understand how bad this is.

Joel was the backbone of this team for the last several years and no one will be able to replace what he brought to the game every night.

I hope for a speedy 2nd recovery and Dr’s that will not push him too fast this time.

I’m more worried about the Joel the person/father/husband than Joel the basketball player/backbone of our team.

silver lining

Let’s say Portland resigns Camby in July

Greg-Marcus-LMA stay healthy and lead the team to the top 4 of the WC

about this time next year, Joel is rehabbedn and fully ready to return for the playoffs

it would be like getting a FA big man, for nothing, right when you need him most

I’m gonna keep hoping this scenario plays out, rather than the “let’s dump Przy’s EC at the trading deadline” fallback option

When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

by two4larue on Mar 8, 2010 2:15 PM PST up reply actions

That'd be nice, but..

The realist in me says that most likely scenario is JPEC. He’ll be especially attractive since insurance will most likely cover his contract.

With a re-signed Camby, I’d expect some sort of Przy + Webster and/or Bayless/Rudy package trade to happen as early as this offseason. That could be enough chips for a CP3 trade, who could be available with Collison looking great as of late. Or, perhaps Harris if they manage to land Wall. We could probably toss in Miller with Przy if we are trading for a PG.

Realistically, even if Joel does manage to comeback like you suggested, he won’t be nearly the same guy as we know it. It’d be best for the team to look to trade him. Yes, I know it sounds heartless, but this is a business and Joel is getting a nice severance next year in the form of his $7+ million option.

if KP does deal Joel at the deadline next Feb (which I doubt, but it could happen)

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Przy resign with Portland in July 2011

but this all depends on his rehab, of course. If he’s healthy, he’s going to want a new contract before the potential work-stoppage in the fall on ’11…no NBA player wants to be left without a source of income when/if the music stops

That’s why Greg oden was drafted… Joel will be better one day. The Blazers won’t tank whether Joel ever plays again or not.

right because with przybilla hurt we can rely on oden

lord knows he’s shown himself to be a real iron man. you argue that no one should rely on joel given his inability to stay healthy except for the last two years. by the logic why is it you think the blazers are ok since they have oden?

call it pessimism if you like but i think the Blazers have a legitimate hole in the middle of their line-up. i would be stunned if greg can play more than 40 healthy games next year.

Not a franchise player

but a favorite of a lot of Blazer fans, and it hurts to think he might be done, or even that he’s going to be out a long time.

Side question

Does this effect KP and Nate’s potential decision on whether to allow Oden to rush back to the court for the playoffs, knowing Joel is a question mark for next year

I suspect the two decisions (Oden vs Przy) will be made independently

from the beginning the Blazer’s staff has said that they’re are going to treat Greg’s injury conservatively. But if the doctors clear Oden for full basketball activity around the middle of April, then the front office and coaching staff will have to make tough choice, and I suspect the future status of Joel will have little impact on it

No chance

You think they would do ANYTHING that they were convinced was not absolutely the best for Greg just because they had Joel to fall back on?

The Greg decision was entirely about Greg Oden. The kid is still a franchise player if he can stay healthy. Joel is a borderline starter. You don’t risk a franchise player because you have a borderline starter behind him, and then not risk him if you lose the guy behind him.

Greg plays this year in one circumstance only — they are convinced he is ready, and that it will be best for him and the team in the long run if he plays.

The value of playoff experience will be factored into the decision about how much Greg plays

but his long term health will continue to be the first priority. From my understanding, while the knee should be fully healed, the initial questions will revolve around his muscle strength and conditioning. In addition, the overall bone density of the leg that has been out of commission for all these months will also be a concern. I believe muscle recovers more quickly than ligaments and tendons, and ligaments and tendons recover more quickly than the skeletal system itself. This is partly why recovery happens in, “steps,” in order to avoid re-injury.

If he gets back on the court at all, it should be for short minutes at first, i.e. in baby steps.

This is unfreakingbelievable.

I’m so blown away.

Joel, so sorry that this had to happen to you. You’re an awesome player and a great guy, and I hope you can make a full recovery, regardless of basketball status. Damn.

You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.

i thought it was a career ender...

before this happened now i think there is little doubt. i really wish the pritchard had tried to package rudy with the expirings to go after a reliable big man signed past next year like okafar. maybe if NO bottoms out he’ll be available for joel’s expiring deal.

on the plus side at least joel can exercise his player option and get one more nice pay day before he calls it quits. really crumby way to see his career end like this.

When we rise from this nightmarish bubbling caldron boiling with bent twisted designs seeming to give credence to all who naysay everything that is Black and Red,

we will resurrect unstoppable, viciously immoveable, feared by mere mortals who once laid claim to glory, or so thought they might. For dread, horror, and terror, will fill the souls of those who war with us…yes us, the mighty Trail Blazers, the ones who crush the rock.
When mug and chalice in victory clang, 3 cheers for Przybilla will be the ring. And if in battle he also fought, then all the sweeter the conquest sought.

Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."

Has anyone considered that we might just have a horrible training staff?

by douis on Mar 7, 2010 7:48 PM PST reply actions

yeah, a real training staff would have made sure that Joel would take baths!

He's talking about our players' tendency to get hurt ON the court.

Bad training staff = more likely to get injuries on the court.

Though the Joel thing was off the court. And regardless, the Oden and Przy things were sort of freak accidents. But all of the other things, like stress fractures and pulled hamstrings, could point to a bad training crew.

Heartbroken for Joel. That sucks bad. He is a warrior that I will always remember as a Blazer...

but I am just not surprised at this. I’m not even bummed out about it. After this season, NOTHING would surprise me. I hope Joel gets back on the right track soon.

Yes, I subscribe to Joel’s justin.tv channel and in this one shot you can see him topple out of the shower in the background.

I'm numb at this point

and frankly… i still question whether it was a career ending or just season ending injury. Reinjurying it just leaves me to lean more towards career ending.

If he can’t get a ring as a player, is there a way to get him on the staff? I know business is business but he made sacrifices to play for this team and believed it was destined for greatness. I’d like to see him earn that ring some way and some how because he’s been a part of the foundation.

Nothing may happen, but it’s what I’d personally like to see.

I think he'd be a welcome part of the organization

but I’m not sure Joel has coaching aspirations. (He stays in Wisconsin until the day he’s required to report each fall, for example)

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
