Isola: Marcus Camby in Knicks Plans?
Frank Isola of the New York Daily News writes that a return to the New York Knicks could be in Marcus Camby's future.
------------------
The Knicks, according to sources, will make a strong push for Marcus Camby, who 11 years ago played a significant role in helping the Knicks reach the NBA Finals. Walsh has tried for two years to acquire the 7-foot Camby and last month lost out again when the Clippers traded him to Portland.
Although Camby turns 36 in two weeks, he still moves well and doesn't need the ball to make an impact. Instead, he is the shot-blocking, rebounding type of center Walsh and Mike D'Antoni covet.
"He only has great memories of New York," Camby's agent, Rick Kaplan, said on Friday in Toronto. "But he's having a great time in Portland. He really enjoys that team."

Programming note: This weekend's Sloan Sports Analytics Conference exceeded my (sky high) expectations. I tweeted some of the most interesting quotes yesterday, which you can read here. A full feature from the conference coming early this week. Thanks for your patience. In the meantime, both TrueHoop and OCD Chick have recaps that are worth your time.

If przy is anywhere close to last year.
then idc camby can go. for now atleast. maybe i will start liking camby more but who knows.
"shaq and zach randolph have the same trainer... "
best one liner i ever heard.
personally
I hope Camby finishes out his career with the Blazers. I think that even at his age he is still a better all-around player than Pryzbilla. It sounds like the Knicks want him as a starter though, so I think he’ll have to choose between money and playing time, or the chance to win….I seriously doubt that LeBron will go to NY, so I don’t think they’ll be a contender in the coming years.
Przy is better than Camby when healthy
Camby can’t truly defend true centers. He is tall but lacks the weight and strength. Joel can actually body up on the likes of Howard, Duncan, and Lopez while Camby gets pushed around. Taking age into account, and it makes sense to let thank Camby for his services and let him walk.
Przybilla was able to body up before his patella tendon RUPTURED.
The Blazers don’t know when or if Joel will be back to playing form. I’m in the “you never can have enough big men” camp. And I like Camby.
I don't see Pryz as the defensive presence you do!
I’d rather have Camby who is a better rebounder and shot blocker, and who MIGHT be able to score a few points now and again. On offense, Joel is only good for setting a pick or possibly getting an offensive board, which Camby is even better at! Age aside, Marcus is the better player.
Camby is better at getting stats.
Przybilla is better at defending the interior.
Wearing the black band for Jarrett Jack, Ime Udoka, Fred Jones, Sergio Rodriguez, Channing Frye, Luke Schenscher, Shavlik Randolph, James Jones, Josh McRoberts, Steven Hill, Jarron Collins, Michael Ruffin, Steve Blake and Travis Outlaw. Sacrificed to the unmerciful god of progress.

Camby would be a great back-up
to LMA.
Dave says he won’t stay because of money AND minutes; I’m still hoping he can live with the uncertain minutes and I’m not sure if the money thing is a personnel money preference and not a salary cap restriction. Maybe we can do a sign and trade but I think we lose some of our salary bank if he just leaves unsigned. Can somebody point me to the post (there must be one, right?) that goes through the Camby salary cap / resigning / sign and trade fine points? thanks
Marcus can back up LMA and Greg
As good as Przybilla is, Joel and Greg can’t play together. Camby can play the high post and he’s a good passer, so he could come in the game to replace either LMA or GO and get as much PT as he can handle in a 3 big man rotation
Portland has MC’s Bird rights. KP said they would try to keep him even before Joel reinjured his knee. I think Portland will pull out all the stops to resign Marcus (and Juwan) this summer
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
I believe Camby will get the $ and the minutes with the Joel re-injury. YAY!!!! (not about the injury)
but that the Blazers will be able to afford Camby and he will get playing time. If he has any doubts all he needs to do is ask Juwann…
man, just saw that about Joel.
Thought he might miss part of the season anyway, but that just sucks.
Joel, we’re with you, get well soon.
Now, Camby signing makes even more sense.
I actually like Camby to start next year.
Ahead of Greg. Bring Greg along slowly. I like that Camby os actually a threat to score when he sets screens. Priz doesn’t even look at the basket

who do we want off the knicks roster?
oh yeah- david lee is over there- and sergio currently (sorry i won’t bring that up again). i’d also love to take a first round pick off them a la the jazz.
i like camby as well, especially his rebounding and tip outs. never liked his shot though… i’d be willing to say thanks and let him move on at this point, but let’s see how this stretch run goes.
Playoff run.
If the Blazers make a good run in the playoffs and show promise for next season, Camby might be tempted to stay. Otherwise, I can imagine him choosing the bigger market. If he stays, I don’t think he should have to take a back seat to Oden, who may or may not manage to play a whole season.
The future
can be a long time coming if you don’t manage to make the most of the present. Do all the planning you like and you will still be subject to the vagaries of fate. The playoffs are what it’s all about and until the Blazers are once again shoe-ins for the playoffs you can forget about ever attracting any great free agents.
Well now with Joel getting hurt again
Looks like we basically NEED to make a play for Camby.
Interesting
We might be seeing the evolution of the SSOL style, and history repeating. The Colangelo version,in Phoenix then Toronto, seems almost exclusively focused on offense. This is a move to get a primarily defensive player, but whose defensive skills complement a fast pace, unlike Ainge’s Shaq experiment. Kinda like Boston getting Russell (in type, not level of greatness, obviously). As a fan of the game (putting aside my Blazers fandom for a moment), I’d like to see Phoenix try something like this, to see what this SSOL tweak might result in at it’s best.

I don't like it...
Haven’t been able to see Camby as a Blazer enough to evaluate his contribution. But overall I just don’t like the way it’s all shaping up from a negotiation standpoint. Sure his agent is doing his job, Camby has great memories of New York BUT he’s having a great time in Portland and really enjoys the team. “RIIIGHT”, I’m sure battling those naging injuries have been a blast for Camby.
36 years old and Camby has skills. I wouldn’t mind keeping him around. BUT I don’t want The Blazers to get played like a violin. Paul Allen has wrote enough big checks. I’m really afraid The Blazers could become the pot sweetners for Camby. I’d set a price I’d pay and then if The Knicks want to exceed that price, then I guess you let Camby walk. But I don’t want to see a bidding war that ends up with the Blazers giving too much money to a guy closer to 40 than 30.
