PRS on McMillan and Pace
Interesting statistical points made showing why a McMillan run team will probably never be a fast paced team, and why that might not be a bad thing.

Some good stuff in that article
Thanks for posting
The NBA- so easy a Kaman can do it
I still would love to see how we could do under a differant coach
if our guys have learned to be efficient through McMillan, what if we got either a hard core offensive or hard core defensive coach after him, imagine what they could do then, I just think Nate is going to keep pushing the same thing and our guys have learned all they are going to from him. Give us someone with some creativity next and see what our guys can do.

hm
why do you think this:
I just think Nate is going to keep pushing the same thing and our guys have learned all they are going to from him.
?
So many of our players are very young, and even the old guys seem able to learn Nate’s style (witness Miller’s dramatic drop in turnovers). I’m not saying Nate’s system is the best (or even the best for the Blazers), but a “hunch” without evidence or even reasoning isn’t particularly convincing.
nellie and d'antoni both run fast paced systems.
they definitely are basking in a lot of success and have won numerous titles.
"There are a few teams you have to watch out for in the fourth quarter."
"Yeah, but Portland definitely is not one of them."
-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters at the end of the third quarter with the Hornets leading 74-59. Portland later ends up winning 97-89.
"They don't mind him shooting that shot at all. Rudy Fernandez is not that great of a 3pt shooter."
-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters right after a Rudy Fernandez missed 3pter. Rudy Fernandez finished the game with three 3pters on six attempts.
I agree
Its not that they don’t get out and run fast-breaks often. Its the fact that when we do get down the court, one person dribbles the ball for 12 seconds, while a bunch of people stand around and then most likely an iso is played. No off-the-ball movement or assists from off-the-ball movement whatsoever.
I didn't mean to turn you on
I blame the players.
Unless Nate has been telling them to stand around and not play basketball while the clock runs.
Wearing the black band for Jarrett Jack, Ime Udoka, Fred Jones, Sergio Rodriguez, Channing Frye, Luke Schenscher, Shavlik Randolph, James Jones, Josh McRoberts, Steven Hill, Jarron Collins, Michael Ruffin, Steve Blake and Travis Outlaw. Sacrificed to the unmerciful god of progress.
when you clear out half the court to allow roy to operate there tends to be
precious little room for off ball movement. this team has so much potential to use screen/roll yet you seldom ever seen it. aldridge/roy or aldridge/miller shoud be able to do this all nite long, and if you have cutters moving it would see a lot of layups or backdoor passes
Nate is an absolutely unimaginative offense coach...
I have a problem that Nate tells the team to push, but evidently he hasn’t shown them how to… I have a problem with an NBA offense that revolves around ONE player moving around picks. I have a problem with our signature play being a 1:5 drive whose most frequent outcome is a miss and a yell… hoping for the refs to bail us out, which won’t happen in the playoffs…
Nate has to go, the sooner, the better…
I'd like to see more cuts to the hoop myself
If Portland could manage to hold down the turnovers and still make some nice interior passes, this would be very good.
Honestly, I say roll more on the pick and roll and get off ball players making cuts to the basket (like we started to see when Oden was in the post) and I don’t care too much about pace. Not all turnovers are created equal, of someone loses the ball out of bounds, so be it. I can live with that. It’s the turnovers that end up in the hands of an opposing player that kill a team.
If we keep the live ball turnovers down and Oden is back soaking up rebounds, then opposing teams will most always be attacking a set defense. Then, even an OK half court defense will look pretty decent.
