To Paul Allen: Invest in LBJ

Paul Allen has a lot of money.  According to http://www.lipstickalley.com/f19/nba-listing-net-worth-nbas-owners-122150/ which is a little old, Paul Allen has more money than anyone else owning an NBA team.

Obviously owning a team is for fun but also for an investment.  The players, the staff, the facilities represent the assets.  Obviously, the return on those assets represent how smart of an investment you made.  So, far an investment decision, you might want to acquire the players with the biggest and most efficient return on your investment.  Superstars, by and large, represent the biggest return, although some are more efficient than others.

The luxury tax is there to dissuade an owner with big pockets from gathering all the quality players, by charging a premium for those high-yield investment.  But what if there was one investment, which the yield was so good, even the luxury tax doesn't diminish the return?

I'm talking about the money-making, attention-getting Goliath of LeBron James.  The guy has hype oozing from him throughout the media network.  All we see on ESPN is "LeBron James changing numbers" (read: cha-ching!) and other such drivel.

If I was as rich as Paul Allen, and I'm not, but I would take a hard look at this formula:

Added Playoff games, merchandise, TV sales, etc - (LBJ Salary + added Luxury tax) = ?

What if some smart guys with spreadsheets figured, he'd be worth 4X millions and we could sign for 1X?  Why not that a 400% return on your investment.  Which is much better than the stock market.  Nike sure wouldn't mind.

Are you aware of how the salary cap works?

the most we can offer LeBron this summer is about 5.5 million.

Rec. Let's get LBJ

He may not have been the best at his position but look at what he accomplished in a pretty short time span. On the one hand, he’s looked at as someone who compromised his values, on the other hand he always kicked butt in order to get the job done. I’m just not sure how you go about “investing” in a dead president.

This was my take also

Lyndon Baines Johnson wasn’t noted for his athleticism, but he could move left or right pretty adeptly, and he was a legendary arm-twister. Imagine the calls he’d get from the refs! I’m thinking he’d be another Bill Laimbeer on the court. Er, if LBJ weren’t dead, that is.

Leave a small market team to come to an even smaller market team? Would love to see it but one of us have a better chance of winning power ball then the blazers do of ever landing LBJ. We need to try and counter the power play and get another superstar to play with Roy and compete with the monsters that will be build this off season

Nah.

I have complete faith in LeBron’s ability to fail miserably when it counts. The only question is, after the Cavs lose with LeBron, Shaq and Jamison, what 20 million dollar player will the Cavs sign next year to once again attempt to give LeBron the pieces he needs to win a Championship.

by Sean M on Mar 4, 2010 3:21 PM PST up reply actions

When has he failed?

He dragged one bad team to the Finals on his own, almost did it again last season. He’s an extremely good player.

Let's get it over with this year

The league will guarantee he wins one. And THEY would like it to be in Cleveland so all the best players and championships don’t go to the big markets so THEY can claim it is all fair.

So let’s get his championship over with while we probably won’t be in the Finals anyway.

LeBron is an amazing player.

And he is also living proof that 1 amazing player can’t carry a team to a Championship victory. Actually, that is old news as Kobe demonstrated that for years until Pau joined the L@kers.

I’m not sure I can agree with the statement that the Cavs were a bad team last year. I just watched the Pacers play live and in person. That’s a bad team. The Cavs do have a lot of role players, but I don’t see how the team would work otherwise. Is there room for two stars on the Cavs? Even Shaq, who may be the biggest egomaniac ever, only plays a 23 minutes a night and has taken a supporting role.

Bottom line: Arguably the best player in the NBA got swept in the ‘07 Finals and failed to make it to the Finals in ’08 and ’09. I can’t imagine a city throwing more support around a single player. The Cavs are 27 million over the cap and made two huge moves this season to improve the team. Maybe it will work and maybe the Cavs will win the Championship. I chose to think they won’t.

In the grand scheme of the game where a Championship is the one and only measure of success, LeBron has failed. Has there ever been so much Hoopla over a player who has never won the ultimate prize?

LeBron’s talent can’t really be questioned. His ability to win when it counts can be challenged. But, yes, he will likely win a title sooner or later.

by Sean M on Mar 4, 2010 4:44 PM PST up reply actions

He hasn't won it

But, he’s only been in the league 6 years. To blast him for not winning a title yet seems odd to me.

His more recent Cavs teams have been better than the one he led to the Finals, I agree with that.

by Mortimer on Mar 4, 2010 5:42 PM PST up reply actions

I was responding to 64-18 who asserted the Cavs would win the title for sure this year.

I think it’s valid to point out that LeBron has been close but hasn’t been able to win at the highest level yet. Should LeBron win a title after only 6 years in the league? No, not necessarily. Will he someday? I have no doubt. Does he have what it takes to win it all this year as 64-18 stated? History shows that when he has had an opportunity to carry this team to an NBA Championship, he has failed. I think he will again this year.

As a basketball fan, I’m force fed LeBron James hype constantly. Am I really so evil because I judge him by the highest standard of achievement the sport offers?

by Sean M on Mar 4, 2010 6:37 PM PST up reply actions

Dude has won player of the month EVERY MONTH this year.

He’s already in the whispered contention for Greatest Of All Time, and has a lot of miles left on his (tree-trunk-like) legs.

PG skills in the body of Karl Malone (with the ups of Kenny Walker, even).

LBJ will win titles. He’ll need more than he had in Cleveland last year to do so, but he’ll do it. The only question is what jersey he’ll be wearing—but the Portland Pinwheel is not an answer to that question.

Book it.

Ahaha

The quote that comes from that is one of my favorites :)

In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

If we had LBJ

Batum would never get his chance with us, I would rather have Batum, honestly. LBJ is a beast, but I think the possible development of a star like Batum is more exciting than watching me play kickball against 3rd graders, which is what it’s like when you watch LeBron play. It actually gets boring.

by GMan83201 on Mar 4, 2010 2:16 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

I would rather have Batum than LeBron because I love me the Nic

He’ll stop James in the finals and all will be well. Portland in seven over the Brooklyn Nets for the title.

But what I would like even more than that would be both the English King James and the French Prince Nicolas. But can such long time enemies play on the same team?

Seriously, everyone is always talking about minute crunches for the team and I never pay attention but with those two how would you… wait, James brings up the ball on anybody so we can have Roy and Nic and LMA and Oden in at the same time.

yeah, I’m in. Paul, open the purse strings and get us some James.

I don’t think Batum will ever be as good as LeBron, he is unreal. But I have watched plenty of Cavs games and they actually get boring, plus LBJ is arrogant and that kind of person isn’t fun to cheer for. I would rather watch the excitiment of a developing player/team than a dominate one centered on LBJ.
Just my opinion.

by PTBinMadrid on Mar 5, 2010 5:11 AM PST up reply actions

You get bored?

Is it because he is just too good? Trust me, if we had Lebron you would not be bored watching him.

Of course this is all a pipe dream, but I HATE the reasoning being “because Batum wouldn’t develop.” That’s like the Bulls passing on Bosh so that Hakim Warrick can develop.

by GMan83201 on Mar 5, 2010 9:46 AM PST up reply actions

seriously, wheres the logic in that?

even if batum realized his full potential, he would be 1/10th the player of LeBron

by 64-18 on Mar 4, 2010 3:12 PM PST up reply actions

Sorry

But, Nic is already better than 1/10th LeBron now. Since his full potential is something that is an unknown he has a very high ceiling, he may actually be a true star in this league in the future. That, and LeBron would never play here.

by Blaze of Glory on Mar 4, 2010 3:23 PM PST up reply actions

i never said lebron will play here

i simply said that if given a straight up choice between batum and lebron, it would be stupid 2 choose batum as some1 above did. and i used the 1/10th thing as an obvious exaggeration to make a point. surely some1 with 1/10th of reasonable knowledge would know that

by 64-18 on Mar 4, 2010 6:16 PM PST up reply actions

Hm...

This would of course mean that we lose Roy and/or several other key pieces. And you would have to so exceed in payment (larry bird? sign one year so we can resign? no idea there..) that coming to a smaller team would be worth it. Oh and keep enough of our pieces that we can convince him we are a better fit than Cleveland where he grew up, on a team that has already won the most games this year… Perhaps if Cleveland lost in the first round?

Honestly don’t see it working out… Nice fantasy though, would put Blazers on the map instantly and the equation would probably be positive (so go for it!)… Finally do you talk Blazers when you drink, cuz i heard this same rant last weekend at a party

I would lose Roy for James

I’ll look into the future

Oden, Priz or Camby
LMA, DC, Beast
Batum, Webs
James, Rudy
Dre, Bayless, Sergio

This team would make me the happiest man on Earth. Wait, to be happier still we would trade Dre to Minni for Rubio.

Did I mention we got Sergio back? After Nate was let go it was the prudent move. It made Rudy, LMA, Dante and Oden especially happy. Batum showed no reaction.

Never say never. Anything is possible.

Andre Miller attempted a dunk last night and made a “nothing but net” 3 point shot.

No way

I would stop watching the Blazers for the time the Lebron was a blazer. That is how deep my dislike for the d bag goes.

by troutfan on Mar 4, 2010 3:22 PM PST reply actions

why whouldn't you hate him

sooo arrogant. remember the time he confiscated the video of the rookie dunking on him? what a pampas _. can’t really express what I feel about him on here.

by vullkem116 on Mar 4, 2010 3:43 PM PST up reply actions

That guy didn't dunk on LeBron.

It wasn’t even his man. LeBron came over at the last 2nd after the original defender got blown by. and LeBron was on the side when he dunked. if you get dunked on then you’re in front of the guy dunking.

that video was way overhyped, and for what? lebron didnt even get dunked on. and if he did, who cares?

by 64-18 on Mar 4, 2010 6:24 PM PST up reply actions

So why confiscate it?

I’ve seen the video… he gets dunked on. He was just the help defender – not a big deal, but again…. why confiscate it?

nothing I can prove

Just anecdotal evidence. But I see him and I want to puke. Plus ESPN announcers practically giving him h anytime he’s around.

Where is the beating of the dead horse

animation when we need it?

Hell will freeze over before Lebron signs with Portland.

thats why we overpaid for LMA, free-agents arent kicking down the doors of the Rose Garden to come play in Portland. I love my city, but it isnt exactly a hot spot.

Rich people do not buy sports teams to make money

a lot of sport team owners end up losing money and sport teams are not a better investment than the stock market :)

I'm going on a Dave boycott until AK1984 is brought back.

The fact that I hate Lebron isn't really important here.

The fact that this isn’t baseball, is.

In Bayless I trust.

I love it when a team comes together...

PG – Lt. Templeton “Faceman” Peck (Methodical player, very heady, not much D)
SG – Captain H.M. “Howling Mad” Murdock (3 point bomber, in your face defender)
SF – Col. John “Hannibal” Smith (Crafty vet, works the official constantly, great head fake)
PF – Sgt. Bosco “B.A.” Baracus (Ferocious rebounder, enforcer)
C – General Hunt Stockwell [season 5] (Veteran presence, gets a few calls here and there)

Conclusion: They won’t out atheletic you, but their team work and cohesion is off the charts. A threat in a short series.

Vietnam

I bet he signs for the Ho Chi Minh City Phighting Phos. It is abundantly clear that he wants to be right in the heart of Nike country, and that’s where they are made.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
