Feelin' the love for Joel

So everybody is back that is comin' back for this season.  The team we had last year won 54 games and basically we traded (in effect) a healthy, more experienced Batum for Travis and a savvy Miller for Blake. So why are we in the 8th spot? It makes me appreciate the toughness and grit Joel brought every night. Camby is great, Greg will come back and dominate next year, but Joel was a big part of what made Portland special last year. A clink & a tip of the glass to Joel!

Ok, let me get my O.C.D. out the way......

Its camby, not canby………..second, we are in the spot we are in because as you point out, we are FINALLY relatively healthy, game 64 of 82. This is why we wont sniff 54, but we are still gonna be the team no one wants in round 1.

and this year there is no yao.

"There are a few teams you have to watch out for in the fourth quarter."
"Yeah, but Portland definitely is not one of them."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters at the end of the third quarter with the Hornets leading 74-59. Portland later ends up winning 97-89.

"They don't mind him shooting that shot at all. Rudy Fernandez is not that great of a 3pt shooter."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters right after a Rudy Fernandez missed 3pter. Rudy Fernandez finished the game with three 3pters on six attempts.

Nope. No Yao this year. This year we get Kobe, Pau, Ron-Ron, and Lamar, or Dallas.

I hope it’s Dallas.

Ron-Ron

has to be the worst nickname in the NBA right now. I think I’d rather be called “Big Baby”

by Billy Hoyle on Mar 4, 2010 10:58 AM PST up reply actions

I hope it is Dallas

but I will take the Fakers over Denver or Utah, although, with Camby being fully integrated by playoff time Utah may not be as much a matchup nightmare for us by then

I Love Me A Whole Lot of The Thrilla, and I miss him playing goalie for us, but he was just part of the reason for 54 wins.

Camby

Maybe i tipped a glass too soon…..
We are on the upswing and CaMby is getting more comfortable. Plus Rudy seems to have his shot back, Brandon’s legs are stronger, LA has been rock solid steady.
Maybe 50 wins is not out of the question. Can we go 13-5?

Injuries

When you consider how many injuries this team has had this year, and how tough the Western Conference is, I’m VERY happy with where we are right now. We aren’t as good as last year, but things could have easily been MUCH worse.

Going with the local municipality theme...

I think his name should be changed to Camus rather than Canby. Marcus Camus just sounds more regal.

Big ups to Joel.

L’Étranger

If that happens, you’ll see Marcus wearing a beret and smoking French cigarettes with Batum and discussing existentialism.

next year's bigs

who will they be? of course G.O. but what about Joel or Camby? both? don’t think that is financially feasible. be curious to see how it pans out. Camby has been a nice stopgap but I love Joel’s toughness.

by crazybee on Mar 4, 2010 11:18 AM PST reply actions

I think Joel exercises his player option

and we resign Camby. I do not want Joel to go at all, AT ALL, but I do think he can start on another team for at least 2 more seasons and I would not begrudge him that if he leaves. If he stays it will be Oden/Pryz, if he goes, this is sort of the genius of Pritchard’s move signing Camby, Camby will be around and available to make it Oden/Camby…Just my hunch…

Keep Martell trade Rudy

I fell off the Rudy bandwagon just a couple days ago. I’m thinking Marty has more value to us as he can swing 2 or 3 (even small 4) more easily, but Rudy’s pretty much stuck as Brandon’s backup (at best). On the other hand, Rudy probably looks more attractive for GM’s around the league because he brings the international appeal, he’s younger, plus he’s missed less games due to injury (technically not even an injury).

Giving Martell time at SG frees up more time at SF for Dante. This makes us a bigger and tougher team, which I think this team still needs. Plus, talking about bigger and tougher means this post is not off-topic.

by jiminut on Mar 4, 2010 12:38 PM PST up reply actions

Martell can't play SG

at least not until he can learn to dribble without looking at the ball.

by atomiccafe on Mar 4, 2010 12:45 PM PST up reply actions

I keep hoping

that Rudy is watching ‘dre and taking notes. I say this because, with Roy taking the ball up the court some of the time, Rudy could play the 1 after ’dre is done. You’ve seen this lineup in games already, and (from what I remember) it’s been quite effective at times. Rudy/Roy/Batum/LA/Camby (Oden when he’s back) could be a deadly unit. If Rudy’s willing to put in the time to work on his defense and ball handling, I think he could stay with the team long term.

by beeroy on Mar 4, 2010 7:52 PM PST up reply actions

the international appeal is precisely why Rudy ain't gonna nowhere

I see your point

but not every team wins a title every season, nor is every player we can replace fernandez with an allstar. So until we get that deep into the playoffs, or find that overseas allstar, Fernandez is pretty secure as long as he brings something we can use to the table…

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
