Blazers: Travis Diener Signing Official

via www.nba.com

Travis Diener cleared waivers and the Blazers were able to formally announce his signing this afternoon.  Here's the press release.

TRAIL BLAZERS SIGN TRAVIS DIENER

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Trail Blazers have signed free agent guard Travis Diener, it was announced today by General Manager Kevin Pritchard.

"We're very happy to have Travis on our roster," said Pritchard. "He is a veteran point guard who will be a good complement to our existing backcourt."

Diener (6-1, 175) holds career averages of 4.9 points, 1.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 15.1 minutes in 174 games (21 starts) during his five NBA seasons with Orlando and Indiana.

The 28-year-old Diener played in four games for Indiana during the 2009-10 season, averaging 0.8 points, 0.5 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 6.3 minutes. He underwent surgery to repair an injury to his left big toe on Nov. 20.

After playing his first two NBA seasons in Orlando, Diener posted career highs of 6.9 points, 1.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 20.5 minutes in 2007-08, his first of three seasons with Indiana.

A three-time All-Conference USA selection at Marquette University, Diener was selected by the Orlando Magic with the 38th overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft.

Diener becomes the 15th player on Portland's roster and will wear No. 27.

Check back this afternoon for a lengthy analysis of everyone's favorite lightning rod: Jerryd Bayless.

Your numerology is kinda suspect, I'm afraid.

The good news: 27 = 3 × 3 × 3; e.g., he’ll hit 3 3-pointers 3 times.

No, your numbers are incorrect also

2+7=9

9= the minimum number of playoff games we will win this year.

he will NOT be eligible for the playoffs, correct?

ah, I thought they had to be signed by March 1st

thanks for clearing that up.

what about Ilgauskis? Does this mean he will be playoff eligible after he resigns with Cleveland?

As long as his former team requested waivers

on or before March 1st, he will be playoff eligible.

No doubt. We have been lucky enough this year, but no more 15 man rotations!!!

The short one says to the tall one, "If I were you, I'd be tall."
The tall one replies, "No, if you were me, I'd be short."

by prajna on Mar 3, 2010 1:18 PM PST up reply actions

Yes.

But I want our twelfth man to play 20 minutes a night, because we’re so far ahead each game.

Wearing the black band for Jarrett Jack, Ime Udoka, Fred Jones, Sergio Rodriguez, Channing Frye, Luke Schenscher, Shavlik Randolph, James Jones, Josh McRoberts, Steven Hill, Jarron Collins, Michael Ruffin, Steve Blake and Travis Outlaw. Sacrificed to the unmerciful god of progress.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

shorter Blake with Travis’ name.
At least with 6 more fouls, maybe the perimeter d can keep opposing pg’s out of the paint.

15th guy

I doubt Diener is it, practically speaking. Mills is #15 now.

Practically speaking

Mills is #13, with Greg and Joel at 14 & 15.

At least, that’s what I think, but we’ll find out which third string PG is activated.

I'm using the system in which injuries don't affect numbering.

Otherwise, you could never say any of your top guys can’t play.

Nate could have used him to wipe the perspiration from his brow. I hope he doesn’t use Diener for anything more than practice cannon-fodder.

by upper left corner on Mar 3, 2010 1:50 PM PST reply actions

Really? Travis Diener?

I hope as much as anyone else here that our 15th guy never sees the floor, but could someone smarter than me please explain why we shouldn’t have made a run at Michael Finley, who was just cut? 15th guy, veteran, playoff experience, can hit a big shot if needed (although, see sentence #1 again—I hope he’d never see the floor either, but then again, who knows this season?)

I’m not looking to hit a home run with a 15th spot, but in what hell-freezing-over scenario are we in when the following players can’t play PG for a stretch, however short: Miller, Bayless, Roy, Fernandez, Mills?

(Yes, I realize I’m making a big deal out of the signing of a 15th man—-it’s been a long day and I need tonight’s game to start so I can regain my sanity)

A poor man's Blake. Fine choice as a 15th man.

If Nate starts using him as much as he used Blake, or even close, I will laugh and/or throw things.

Firmly in favor of making a coaching change at the end of the season.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
