Scoreboard Watching
‘Twas (almost) a fortnight before the end of the season…
Talk of playoff seedings was in the air, so I sprang over to ESPN to see what was the matter,
And what to my wondering eyes should appear, but 4 neatly packaged gifts for any scoreboard watcher”
(Ok, I realize I took some horrible liberties in botching The Night Before Christmas, but in a stunningly chic move to save myself from looking ridiculous, I will call it a “postmodern” re-writing—thus freeing myself from criticism, because nobody really knows what “postmodern” means... The word itself has become, ironically, a floating signifier. But I digress.)
Now, let me digress again (this is known as “double digressing,” though, it is nothing at all like putting your whole mouth into the dip.) I believe the Blazers should simply be focused on “taking care of business.” I am excited to see where they end up simply playing their best, and would rather focus on the great things going on with our team than get caught up in dreadful scoreboard watching….
But… I am hooked. And tonight was one of the most glorious nights in recent memory. The aforementioned 4 gifts are as follows.
First and foremost, the Spurs lost to the Nets. After simply refusing to lose the past few games, they managed to drop one in the most unexpected way. I almost didn’t even look at the score—but, I did, and lo and behold, they lost, along with Denver, and meanwhile Dallas and Utah both won.
It’s like after spending the last few weeks blowing my bankroll at the craps table, I took the 100 I was left with, stopped by the roulette table on my way out, and plopped it down on 00, just for the heck of it. And BAM! Jackpot. Then I bet it 3 more times, and 3 more times it hit.
To break it down a bit more, in my mind the best matchup is Dallas. And I am convinced the best chance for this to happen is for Dallas to end up 3rd, Portland to end up 6th. That means we need to finish above San Antonio and OKC.
Therefore, any Spurs or Thunder loss is GOOD, particularly if it is a game they “should” win.
Next, we need Dallas to stay at third, which means either Utah or Denver needs to win, while the other needs to lose. As Utah has a favorable schedule and has been looking good lately, that means the most likely way for Dallas to end up third is for Utah to be 2nd, Dallas 3rd, Denver 4th (or below). For this to happen,
Utah winning is GOOD.
Denver losing is GOOD.
Dallas winning, (except against us) is GOOD.
All four happened tonight. Which leaves the West looking like this:
- L@kers
- Dallas
- Utah
- Phoenix
- Denver
- OKC
- Portland
- San Antonio
With Utah and Dallas’ remaining schedules, I think it is very possible Utah passes them eventually, especially if we can beat Dallas. Same goes for OKC—if we beat them, we have a great chance of finishing ahead of them. Which would leave us having Dallas in the first round, setting us up nicely.
Now, lest this post be merely a jinx, it remains to be pointed out that the Blazers still have to play very well, and win the games they “should” win, esp. Dallas and OKC. But our chief obstacle in the way of this particular matchup has nearly dissolved. Fate has set things up nicely for it to happen. If it doesn’t materialize, it will more likely than not be because the Blazers didn’t take care of business. For the Blazers, the challenge, therefore, is not in their stars, it is in their hearts—at least after tonight.
Also, the L@kers lost, again, which is the sweetest cherry on top. I gotta say it was a good day.
Ite Blazeres!

I am still gunning for the 4 seed
I know it is improbable, but we get Denver Thursday, beating them puts only 1 game back on them. We need Phoenix to lose a bit though. They are on an east coast swing now followed by finishing up with a tough WC schedule. If we take care of business and win out or maybe take one loss to the Lakers we have a shot at the 4.

If we get the 4th or 5th seed
and win in the first round, we’d play the l*kers in the 2nd round. I’d rather beat them in the WCF than 2nd round — much more dramatic, bigger stage, more national attention, etc.

TBH, i rather not see L*kers in the 2nd round either
I think we could make the WCF if we face two of the following: Denver, Dallas, Utah, or Phoenix.

If we get the 5 seed with Dallas as 4...
And the Spurs beat the Lakers in round 1, then we can destroy the Spurs in round 2 and make it to the WCF.

that's quite a lot to assume
thinking SA beats the L*kers, since they just lost to the Nets and Ginobili is hurt, not to mention Parker is out for a while.

Utah's got a tough slate the rest of the way.
I think it goes Dallas 2, Utah 3 … the rest is up for grabs. With how Denver is playing and looking at their schedule, Phoenix 4, Portland 5, Denver 6, San Antonio 7, OKC 8 is not out of the question.

I disagree
We lost the season series to Utah, and swept Dallas. Utah has a better margin than the Lakers at +5.8, Dallas has a +2.1, lower than our +3.3. Dallas is as talented as any team in the top 4, but for whatever reason, our appear so much better against them then Utah.
Utah wasn't that much better than us
Boozer hit that last shot in regulation by luck. Utah doesn’t have our number in a 7 game series necessarily.

Trying to remember our last win in Utah?
But Utah has not played our present team so we can hope.

Boozer hit that last shot in regulation by luck.
Boozer got the rebound by pushing Camby in the back so hard Marcus was doubled over. No home-town cooking from the refs on that play
Sloan > McMillian, and Utah is a tough place to get a W, that’s why the Jazz would have to be favored
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
Jerry made a good in-game adjustment to come back from 25 in that game
he played Fesenko and Boozer together and they owned the offensive boards. We saw against OKC that Portland will struggle against good rebounding teams. Camby can’t get them all. LMA has improved but he’s not like Greg or Joel in that department. Howard is good for a few hard fouls but Juwan will get beat to the loose balls as well. Cunningham or Pendergraph won’t play enough to factor
So yeah, I’d be concerned about the Jazz out-muscling the Blazers. Portland would have to pass well and hit their shots to win 4 games. And keep D-Will under control, it’s a lot to ask

tend to a agree
the jazz have several strengths led by coach sloan, and their point guard williams. miller is plenty physical enough to play williams and the rest of the blazers and jazz starters actually match up reasonably well, but the jazz bench looks much much stronger.
as to making midgame adjustments and coaching end games hard to go away from sloan.
I have no idea if the Blazers would beat Dallas....
but I did enjoy your post. Very well written!
I think how well the Blazers play out the string, so goes how well they’ll do in the playoffs. By that I mean, if they stay focused and play hard and smart, they’ll probably end up at least 6th. Those same qualities should serve them well in the playoffs. They’re getting hot at the right time, and we all know what a hot team can do in the playoffs.
i have been saying we win out for a few weeks now
and have been right except for that phoenix game

My crystal ball says...
We are going to end up playing Denver, unless we beat them in Denver on Thursday.
We will be the sixth seed, they will be the third, behind Dallas. Utah and Phoenix and Denver are all likely to finish with 53 wins, Dallas with 54-55, and Denver wins the tiebreaker over Utah by virtue of going 3-1 head to head, and then gets the third seed as the division winner. This is predicated on Utah losing on the road to New Orleans and Houston and LA and winning all their remaining home games.
If Portland goes 6-2, we finish 51-31. The Blunder are unlikely to end up with more than 50 wins. The Spurs with tonight’s loss are probably at 48. This scenario is tough, as we would need to win in Denver to advance, but we’d probably get Dallas in the second round if we managed to do so.
On the other hand, unlikely stuff can happen – who really thought the Nets would pick tonight to get their 10th win?
I've been reading so much of this stuff
My conclusion: I don’t care who we play.
Lakers: Playing the best is never a bad experience
Dallas: Possibly beatable but everyone is overplaying our chances (don’t believe in regular season head-to-heads as reliable indicator of playoff success)
Utah: Would be another good experience, perhaps allowing us to see how more motion and ball movement can make the sum greater than the parts (We are at least as good as the Jazz on paper)
Denver: Losing Martin makes them vunerable, would be a fun series with lots of trash talking between BE and Denver Stiffs if history is any indicator
Suns: Our best chance to actually win a series. If we can control the tempo, we win. Visa versa too though.
I’m actually relaxed now, we are in the playoffs barring a miracle and whoever we play I think we can compete well against but probably not beat.
I would say we are in the playoffs barring a tragic meltdown
but I tend to agree with you on the other stuff
