Poll - Confidence in Ownership
via www.vulcan.com
In light (or lack thereof) recent happenings, how confident are you that a Vulcan, Inc. ownership will ultimately do what's best for your beloved Portland Trail Blazers franchise? Financial resources don't seem to be an issue. Paul Allen's passion for his team certainly cannot be questioned. But what about the stability and motives of the influential hierarchy that surrounds him? Or his ability to make thoughtful, unhurried decisions based on facts and not raw emotion?

It's not confidence in the ownership that's even the problem
When the media (AKA Awoj) has an axe to grind, it’s hard not to be cynical about everything.
"B-Roy is the best shooting guard I have played against"

undecided
but that is because I am not sure the relevance.
We don’t have this team without them. At the same time we do not have the Witsitt era without them either.
So long as the core of the team is maintained over the next several seasons, I am fine with any moves they make in management…
"Oh Yeah!" ~ Kool Aid Man
Being a Seahawks fan...
It is hard to make sense of what is going on. The Seahawks are owned by Paul Allen as well…The Seahawks traded away a decent backup quarterback for chump change. They traded away one of their best defensive ends (a potential starter) for chump change. They cut their starting safety for no compensation. They overpaid to acquire a third string unproven quarterback. Their moves have been headscratchers so far. Not as much of a head scratcher as much as what is going on in Blazerland right now.
Can I buy you a fish sandwich?
perhaps
somebody should check on what meds Allen is taking. I get the feeling that sound judgement is on a vacation somewhere in the Bahamas.
Get busy livin', or get busy dyin'. -the shawshank redemption.
Maybe not the best comment...
considering his condition. Maybe I am being overly sensitive…?

I have tons of confidence in Paul Allen
He love his team, he loves basketball, and he wants to win. He makes some decisions that aren’t the best, but that’s okay with me as long as he cares.
What worries me right now, is that I’m not sure if he’s making the decisions right now or not. I do not trust Vulcan’s management at all. They’re in it for the money, trying to make the team profitable rather than successful. I’m not sure that they’re willing to take the risk of paying for a championship caliber team for the small chance of winning one. Additionally, I’m not all the confident with their business moves in general, which doesn’t give me much hope for the Blazers.
It's the Vultures...oops I mean Vulcans that I don't trust!

"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.
But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

I have been won back over the past few years but there have been some rocky times with ownership even in the past 2 years for me.
Confident because he loves the team.
Not confident because he is a Seattle guy and no matter how long the lease is at the Rose Garden I can’t help but wonder if he wants to move the team to his hometown.
Confident because they implemented a long term plan to get the team back on track instead of continuing deeper into the era of Trader Bob. The plan seems to be working.
Not confident because this is still the guy that stepped in and signed Zach Randolph and Darius Miles to huge contracts when conventional wisdom seemed to say wait a year and see if anyone else makes a better offer.
Like I said, undecided.

Which owners would you want?
Take away the champions of the past few years (Spurs, Miami, Boston, and Lakers)….which owners would you want? The list is fairly small…
Cleveland’s owner has gotten praise as being a solid owner. They have done their best to surrounding Lebron with guys who can help him win a ring, but in the end Gilbert has not thrown the type of money around that PA has. I’m not all too impressed with having Mike Brown as your coach when your star player is Lebron.
The only owner I’d want that hasn’t won a ring is Cuban…and really that is in part bc of his antics. He and PA are both passionate about their team and both seem to be willing to throw money around…the only difference is that Cuban is more outspoken than Paul it seems.

Okay, you win, I looked up the names finally.
I would rather have:
Wyc Grousbeck
Dan Gilbert
Stan Kroenke
Leslie Alexander
Jerry Buss
Herb Kohl
Clayton Bennet*
Richard Devos*
Peter Holt
The estates of Larry Miller* and Abe Pollin
*Private philosophies of the individuals are not being judged in this case.

3 names.
I forgot that I don’t like Micky Arison.
Or Mark Cuban for that matter, so the list is getting pretty long when you start adding both our lists together.

what exactly makes these guys better?
bc they have a better team currently?
keep in mind that PA’s Blazers have gone as far…if not farther than quite a few on your list. A couple finals appearances and a long string of playoff experiences.

I'm not judging by team success or current strength
I’m judging by what the owners do for the fans. These other owners have put out the same sort of investment as Allen, lost the same investments, and had different success. Pollin tried to build a winner but it was a flawed base, starting with Jordan, and ending with Zero. Kohl has had many opportunities to leave Milwaukee but doesn’t. Kroenke and Alexander have spared no expense at building their front office the right way. Devos has spent way more than Allen to pursue wins if that’s your criteria. Bennet is slimy, but he leveraged everything to get a team to his fan base, and he treats them well.
Obviously I could be way off base on some of these other owners since I don’t follow their teams as closely as the Blazers, but I just don’t believe in a blanket statement that Paul Allen is the best owner no questions asked.

The Jumptown shenanigans are not fan friendly.
This Pritchard/Penn business is not fan friendly.
Large group ticket sales are not fan friendly.
Season ticket increases in this economy/current team success are not fan friendly.

that you wouldn’t consider our neighbors to the south east what hey think of Mr Bennet.

well
by that same token then we shouldnt be mad if PA decides to move the Blazers to Seattle then.

Bennet didn't care about Seattle he cared about Oklahoma
I don’t like him, and I think the other owners should have vetoed the move in their best interests due to local market sizes, loss of Seattle as international city, and added travel costs.
I don’t really want the Blazers to move, but I’m sure Seattle would enjoy a new team.

Speaking as someone who would know
Seattle would not appreciate having a team that was stolen from a very close neighbor.
I have none
1.) That botched media announcement was horrible and showed an image of KP under siege.
2.) Paul Allen has the ego that can come with too much power.
3.) This story has been played out before with the Vulcans.
4.) Dysfunction/disorganization are both rampant in PA companies which leads me to believe that this is not a fluke but how things really work minus someone like KP filtering it out.
A number of people here poo poo’d culture. Blows my mind, but they do and it makes me wonder if they’ve ever worked somewhere that you were energized and excited to go in to work for. If the current culture changes I see that trickling down to players.

I hope I never go to a jury trial with you "NONE" folks...
Circumstantial evidence and you’re willing to hang “the ownership”.
I am embarrassed to be a Blazer fan not because of the ownership but because of our reactionary, volatile fans and members of the media that have a National Enquirer like need to sensationalize.
Next thing you know BEdge will be in an uproar because one of the Blazer Dancers was texting Tiger Woods… I DON’T CARE!!!… We are in the middle of a stretch run, with a tough set of games ahead, and you people are wrapped up in melodrama about off court events. Do you think that none of this filters down to the players and becomes a distraction?
I support the PLAYERS, COACHES, MANAGEMENT and OWNER of this team and refuse to turn on them like a wounded Puma just because they make human mistakes.
GO BLAZERS!!!
Well Said emall...
People do not remember what it was like before Paul Allen.
Blazers did not go after any players that were high priced.
Blazers did not spend to keep their own star players.
We did not get even a sniff of the second round of the playoffs.
Blazers Played their games in a D-League arena.
Paul Allen has spoiled the whinny, ungrateful, knee-jerk-reacting sports fans in this town that cannot make up their minds, and know very little about what it takes to own and field a competitive NBA Team. I would not blame him if he packed up the Blazers, and took them to a more deserving city. He has spent more time and money trying to keep a winning team on the floor than most of the lame posters on this site deserve.
Try giving some support and appreciation to the man that has given a little league town, a big league team.
